INTRODUCTION
Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education and Santiago Canyon College Continuing
Education are committed to the continued development of well-trained instructors to
deliver quality instruction to their students in Santa Ana, Orange and surrounding areas.
The joint faculty development committee has developed this booklet in order to guide
instructors to activities that can provide training. Completing flex responsibilities is a faculty
obligation for all* instructors employed by the district who are not already working when
flex week begins.
GUIDELINES AND INSTRUCTOR OBLIGATIONS
Instructors of Rancho Santiago Community College District are required to participate in
faculty development activities. The types of activities and the number of hours required
depend on the individual instructor’s assignment. Instructors should complete a Faculty
Development Agreement Form and turn it into the faculty development office or register
online. Any activities not listed in this booklet or online must be approved by the
instructor’s administrative dean.
The workshops and other activities listed in the booklet are subject to change. Instructors
will receive periodic updates. If an activity is cancelled or a workshop is filled, it is the
responsibility of the instructor to choose other appropriate activities and receive
administrator approval if necessary. The faculty development office will do its best to
provide flex activities during the semester for those who do not complete flex during flex
week; however, most of these activities will be online or on Friday afternoons.
It is also the instructors’ obligation to complete an evaluation of each workshop and any
other paperwork specified by their department.
Calculating Your Flex Assignment: For Fall Flex, faculty are to complete 1.5 hours times their
fall weekly assignment. Therefore if an instructor has a 12-hour assignment, he or she must do
18 hours of flex. Flex must be completed no later than December 1 of any given fall semester.
*Exemption: A few teachers are exempt from doing flex. Since flex is calculated as “in lieu of”
instruction for the first week of the semester, instructors who are already teaching during flex
week, do not do flex unless they are released per their administrator. Also, instructors who
receive their assignments after the first week of flex do not have an obligation because they did
not have an assignment during the week for which the state reimburses teachers.
For questions related to your contract, see your department chairs/coordinators or e-mail Rob
Jenkins ([email protected]) or Maureen Saunders ([email protected]).

THE CONTINUING EDUCATION FLEX
ONLINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CEFOMS)
CEFOMS is a new online system designed for our program that allows faculty to propose workshops,
register for workshops and other faculty development activities, and monitor their personal flex
obligations. The program exists within the DATATEL management system and is accessible through the
faculty tab of WebAdvisor. Participants who wish to attend RSCCD workshops but are not RSCCD noncredit faculty may contact the faculty development office for information and register for activities.
RSCCD non-credit instructors will receive an agreement form to submit every semester after teaching
assignments have been posted.
PERSONAL FLEX ACTIVITIES
Faculty may request personal flex activities. These activities should not be things you do in preparation
for your class like lesson planning. They must be professional development focused as interpreted by
your dean or coordinator. You must request these activities through CEFOMS and where the dean
approves or denies. After you have completed the activity, the dean or coordinator verifies it and
CEFOMS is automatically updated.
***IMPORANT NEW POLICY
Because of the nature of the online program, faculty will no longer be able to attend workshops for
partial credit meaning leaving early or coming late. They will not be able to take workshops that are at
the same time or where times overlap. As in previous semesters, all attendees must sign in to get credit
for all activities.

CEFOMS #542
We all deserve an opportunity to better
ourselves whether it is the first or tenth
attempt. As we grapple with addressing
diversity and equity in education we must
understand our students’ cultures and their
sociocultural experiences. Given the
implications associated with education, it is
critical that as educators we are aware of
how our cultural values, attitudes and beliefs
impact the learning environment. Engaging in
respectful and caring dialogues about cultural
issues allows us to foster an environment
that is responsive to the needs of our
multi-ethnic student population.
Dr. Susana Salgado is a full-time tenured
faculty at Santa Ana College in Psychological
Services. As a licensed psychologist she
provides direct clinical services to SAC’s
student body in English and Spanish. She is
also involved in training and supervision of
doctoral interns completing their clinical
internship at SAC’s Psychological Services.
Susana earned her doctorate in Counseling
Psychology from the University of
Oregon. Her professional, clinical and
scholarly interests lie within an array of social
justice, multicultural and gender related
areas. She is committed to supporting
historically underserved students'
educational goals. She also engages in
regular community outreach and education
to destigmatize mental health concerns and
access to mental health services within
Latina/o communities.

WHAT I LEARNED IN MY CLASS
Students will use MS PowerPoint 2013 to

This workshop provides instructors with a
method of assessing what students learned
from the class. Instructors can propose that
students create a group or individual
