---------------------------------------SPECIAL EVENTS--------------------------------------------Mindfulness Meditation -6 week program- Beginning Monday April 28 10-11 am
This class is open to people who have been diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers
This 6 session weekly program, Mondays from 10-11am, is open to people who have been diagnosed with
cancer and their caregivers. The program instructor, Liz Maillett, is a retired attorney who received her
training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction at the University Of Mass Medical School.
Mindfulness can be cultivated through mindfulness meditation, a systematic method of focusing your
attention. Above all, mindfulness practice involves accepting whatever arises in your awareness at each
moment. It involves being kind and forgiving toward yourself.
For many people, such as people impacted by cancer, the practice of mindfulness meditation
(mindfulness based stress-reduction) can be a useful tool in improving one’s quality of life - both during
the cancer experience and in their lives after cancer. Pre-register
Surviving Cancer after Surviving Cancer - Wednesday April 30 6-7 pm
We are pleased to have Kevin L. Murphy author of Surviving Cancer after Surviving Cancer with us for this
evening presentation. Kevin will talk about his experience, as a husband/caregiver, moving through
diagnosis, treatment and post-cancer treatment life with his wife. He will present his unique perspective
on the emotional impact of cancer coming into the life of an individual and couple.
He is a former truck driver, teacher and firefighter, who, since 1981, has been a courtroom lawyer. He
now resides in Kentucky and is the founder of The Phyllis Foundation, a non-profit focusing on getting
the word out about the emotional impact of cancer on the lives of individuals and couples. Pre-Register
Restorative Yoga – Saturday April 13 1-2:30 pm
What is Restorative Yoga?
The antidote to stress is relaxation. To relax is to rest deeply. Relaxation is a state in which there is no
movement, no effort and the brain is quiet. Restorative yoga is an active relaxation. By supporting the
body with props, we alternately stimulate and relax the body to move towards balance. Restorative yoga
can calm the nervous system and improve the quality of sleep. Pre-register.
No experience necessary - Wear comfortable clothes - Bring mat if you have one, we will have
extra mats.
------------------------------------ONGOING PROGRAMS----------------------------------------------
STRESS MANAGEMENT- Try Yoga or Tai Chi - to increase strength, flexibility and calm the mind. These programs
are drop-ins.
SUPPORT GROUPS- Participant Support Groups offer people living with cancer a safe place to connect, share and
learn from one another. Open to people at any point in their cancer experience and facilitated by a
professional/licensed therapist. Intake/screening is required.
There is also a bi-weekly Men’s Support Group and Caregiver’s Support Group and a monthly Melanoma
Support Group. These groups are drop in. Please call for more information (781) 610-1490.
NEWCOMERS - If you are new to The Cancer Support Community, we recommend that you attend a Newcomers
Orientation Meeting. Individuals with cancer, family members and friends are invited to join us for a one-hour
informational meeting to learn more about our services and the variety of programs offered free of charge. A
cancer survivor typically leads these meetings. Drop in or call ahead (781) 610-1490.
PREPARE FOR SURGERY, CHEMO OR RADIATION - Available to those people who will be starting treatment or
having surgery. Based on Peggy Huddleston’s program: “Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster,” this program
provides physical and emotional preparation for surgery, chemo or radiation. Peggy’s program gives patients tools
to use in the days before surgery that empower them to go from feeling very afraid to profoundly peaceful, a state
of being medically proven to help people heal faster and move through their treatment in a more relaxed fashion.
Individual sessions are offered by CSC-MSS staff members Ann Allegrini, RN and Gail Mitton, WHE.
