With several fresh new faces on
both sides of the line and a renewed
excitement, Atlanta Falcons players
and fans have already got their eyes
on winning their division, the playoffs
and a possible Superbowl bid as the
2006 NFL season commences.
The Falcons
garnered some
great new talent
from the 2006
NFL Draft,
including
Virginia
Tech DB
Jimmy
Williams,
Mississippi
State RB
Jerious
Norwood,
Syracuse
OT Quinn
Ojinnaka,
and Fresno
State WR
Adam
Jennings.
On a local
note of interest,
University of
Georgia fans
will be hoping
to see former
UGA QB D.J.
Shockley get
in the game.
And the
off-season
acquisitions
of offensive
tackle Wayne
Gandy and
defensive
specialists Chris Crocker and Lawyer
Milloy will help shore the team up
in areas that were lacking last year.
In his third year at the helm,
QB Michael Vick has become
more comfortable running the West
Coast offense and has gelled with
the Falcons’ talented receivers. But
don’t expect this comfort zone to be
completely relaxed — Vick should
continue to wow the crowds with his
sometimes controversial, but always
exciting and explosive style of play.
This month, the Falcons’ season
opens with an away game September
10 at 1 p.m. against the Carolina
Panthers. The Falcons will host the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their first
home game at the Georgia Dome on
September 17 at 1 p.m. (Both games
will be televised on FOX-TV.) On
September 25, the Falcons and New
Orleans Saints will be featured on
ESPN’s Monday Night Football at
8:30 p.m. in the Louisiana Superdome.
In addition to Tampa Bay, the Falcons
face key division opponents at home,
including Carolina, New Orleans,
Dallas, New York Giants, Cleveland,

Georgia Quilts on Display
Designs of the Times: Twentieth-Century
Georgia Quilts, an exhibition drawn from
the statewide survey of more than 9,000
quilts documented by the Georgia Quilt
Project, opens September 9 at the Atlanta
History Center. This unique exhibition,
which runs through April 22, 2007,
explores the vibrancy and relevance of
quilt making in Georgia — as labors of
love and aesthetic achievements. Designs
of the Times features 70 quilts, each with
a unique history for visitors to discover.
The exhibition presents these quilts in categories of fabrics, colors, pieced shapes,
appliqué, technology, and use/purpose,
which will help visitors to better “see”
quilts by showing the many decisions a
quilter makes when creating a piece.
The Atlanta History Center is located at
130 West Paces Ferry Rd., NW. For
more information, call 404-814-4000
or log on to www.atlhist.org.
Yellow Daisy Festival
More than 500 artists and crafters from
38 states and two countries will display
their works at the 38th Annual Yellow
Daisy Festival, September 7-10, at Stone
Mountain Park. In addition to arts and
6
Page 6
crafts, there will be daily live entertainment, children’s activities, clogging, crafts
demonstrations, festival foods and the
Yellow Daisy Flower Show, which takes
place Sept. 8-10 at the Marina Building.
Vehicle entry to Stone Mountain Park is
$8 (cash only) for a one-day permit or
$35 for an annual parking pass. No
coolers or pets can be brought inside
the festival. For details, visit online at
www.stonemountainpark.com.

Fishy Fun
Grab your goggles and dive right in!
The Center for Puppetry Arts welcomes
back Emmy-nominee Lee Bryan, a.k.a.
“That Puppet Guy,” and his one-man
water wonderland, Circus of the Sea,
presented Fridays through Sundays,
through September 24. This wacky
ocean odyssey is filled with fishy facts
and fun that’s perfect for all ages. Bryan’s
brightly colored rod puppets are made
almost entirely of recycled detergent and
cleanser bottles making this show a great
opportunity to learn about recycling and
marine conservation studies. After the
show, Bryan will demonstrate the process
of making and operating all of his crafty
creatures. The Center for Puppetry Arts is

p.m. explores the lives and accomplishments of 19th and early 20th century
African Americans in Atlanta during
slavery, the Civil War, reconstruction,
