WE ARE A CLUB DEVOTED TO PHYSICAL FITNESS, ATHLETIC COMPETITION,
HEALTH, AND FELLOWSHIP.
FROM THE PRESIDENT
- Polly Corvaia, President
Thanks a million for showing up in force at several pacer events last month.
First the trail maintenance days at Nolde Forest where 30 of us worked to
clean the park of winter debris, then the Mt. Penn Mudfest as well as the
weekly training runs and the general meeting.
Thanks a million for showing up in force
at several pacer events last month. First
the trail maintenance days at Nolde
Forest where 30 of us worked to clean
the park of winter debris, then the Mt.
Penn Mudfest as well as the weekly
training runs and the general meeting.
Mudfest morning was sunny and brisk
and everyone anxiously and happily
awaited the firing of the stuffed pig to
start the race. The new course was
definitely tougher trail than in the past,
but then again, trail runners are tough
people. Everyone enjoyed themselves,
or at least has a good story to tell. We
hosted 750 runners on the mountain
and it took much effort by many volunteers, headed by Ron Horn who does a
great job in every aspect of organizing
that race. There were dozens of other
pacers who prepped the course, set up
Rotary Park and cleaned the site
afterwards. The mountain was cleaner
after the race, than it was before.
Remember to come out and run or help
with the Charlie Horse Half Marathon
Trail Race on Sunday, May 27th. A
beautiful course and through this race,
our club is able to donate thousands of
dollars to the Special Olympics, and
that money stays here in Berks County.
I hope you can help this great cause.
Contact RD Brett Lynch and let him
know that you can be there.
Weekly trail maintenance has begun at
French Creek every Tuesday at 6:00
p.m. The meeting location is directly
across the road from the park office on
Park Road. If you have any questions,
call Charlie Crowell, 610-856-7372.
June 6th the pacers will have a booth at
Blue Marsh Lake’s “Get Outdoors Day”.
Beth Auman is heading up this new
event for the club. Thanks in advance,
for helping any way that you can. Volunteer apparel is going quick but more is
on order. If you are helping at any of
these events, contact me for apparel
and I will make sure you get it.
The Wine and Cheese party in the
Pagoda is not yet scheduled, but we’ll
let you know when we get a date. Also
this summer we plan to schedule a day
of kayaking on Blue Marsh Lake and an
evening
at
the
Lehigh
Valley
Velodrome. The BIG date to remember
is August 26th. The Lehigh Valley
Running Club has challenged us a
friendly XC style competition at Bear
Creek Resort. Winners get bragging
rights, free beer and a traveling trophy.
What could be better than that!

LOCATION: Sokol Club - April 12, 2012
Kim Rivera was this month’s guest speaker. Kim is starting a Girl’s
on the Run Berks County council. Girl’s on the Run is open to third
through eighth grade girls. The 12 week curriculum addresses all
aspects of girls’ development - their physical, emotional, mental,
social, and spiritual well being.
Treasurer’s Report:
The treasurer reported the club is in good financial standing.
Race Director’s Reports:
Sue Jackson reported on the Shiver by the River races. The race
directors wanted to give a huge thank you to all the people that
volunteered.
There were about 670 runners at this years Mt. Penn Mudfest. Ron
did a great job of coming up the new 15K course. Although this new
course was crowded, there are ideas to improve the race so it is not
as crowded next year.
Brett Lynch reported on the Charlie Horse half marathon. Saturday,
April 28 is a clean up day on the Horse Shoe Trail with the focus
around Charlie Crowell’s property.
Ted Andrus reported on Run for the Ages. The race will be held on
Sunday, June 24. Due to parts of route 625 being closed, directional
signs will need to be made and posted prior to the race. As of today,
there are 25 entries. Nolde has approved the course which will
include Middle Road.
Grings Mill Run will be held on Sunday August 5.
Barry Goodhart reported on the Oley Valley Country Classic. A
major sponsor from prior years can no longer participate. Barry is
seeking new sponsors. Please contact Barry if you have suggestions for new sponsors.
Tom Chobot reported on the Junior High Cross Country Race. After
having this race for three years, Tom is considering expanding the
race. Tom would like to add a race which would be open to
non-BCIAA schools.
The Pagoda Pacer Lehigh Valley Road Runners race will be held on
Sunday August 26 at Bear Creek.
Vice President’s Report:
Members have signed up to host runs and then a gathering at their
house starting with the last Wednesday in May through the first half
of October. The charity runs are going well, with the last one
supporting the Opportunity House. Next month’s charity run will
benefit the Animal Rescue League.
Social Events:
Members at the meeting expressed an interest in kayaking and a
night at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome. The annual wine and cheese
event is tentatively postponed. Shaun and Dave’s excellent adventure will be held on May 5. The Barn Yard Challenge will be held in
June at Mike Yoder’s house.
Old Business:
March 17 was a clean up day at Nolde Forest. April 21 is the next
clean up day at Nolde Forest. There is a clean up day scheduled at
Blue Marsh Lake on April 21 at 9am. Blue Marsh Lake’s get
outdoors day will be on Saturday June 9.
New Business:
As many of you may have read in The Reading Eagle, the Berks
running community has lost another friend, Bob Focht. Bob
collapsed during the Fools' Run on Saturday, March 30. Bob participated in many local runs at many different distances. He was a
positive spirit who always challenged himself to do more and
achieve personal bests. Those that ran with him will miss his everpresent smile. Bob passed doing what he loved. He will be greatly
missed.
As a lifelong runner and more recently an assistant high
school cross country coach, I frequently ramble to whomever
will listen about the qualities of the running community. I'm a
true believer that running brings out the best in people on
multiple levels. Perhaps it's because it's our human nature
that we come together best during any kind of adversity, and
the struggle and discomfort of our sport, though self inflicted,
is no different.
In September of last year, our youngest child, Michael, 25,
was diagnosed with AML, a rapidly progressing form of
Leukemia. Literally within days Michael went from preparing
to run the Blues Cruise 50k to being admitted into the Dana
Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and receiving the first of
many blood transfusions and chemo treatments. Our lives
changed direction overnight and would stay that course for
the next five months. In January, he had a bone marrow
transplant and is doing much better now and will continue to
recover over the next year. He has insisted that we reduce
our traveling and return to our normal lives which we are
doing. However, we constantly look back on the whole experience and reflect on the many things that we have to be
thankful for. Between family, friends, neighbors, and the
Pacers, Gwyn and I had been blessed with an outpouring
of love, support, and generosity ranging from household
chores, transportation, gift cards, emails, phone calls, to a
simple hug at a moment when we needed it most. I don't
mind admitting that this has brought us both to tears on more
than one occasion. We thought that the best way to express
our sincere and most heartfelt thanks to all of you is to do so
here, publicly, because the list of names is simply too long to
mention. Runners are good people. To us, you are a blessing
we didn't know we had until we needed it.
CHARLIE HORSE
HALF MARATHON

9:00 am
Volunteers Needed
The Charlie Horse Half Marathon will be held on Sunday
May 27, Memorial Day Weekend. Please email Brett Lynch
at [email protected] if
you are interested in volunteering.
The race will be starting one
hour earlier this year at 9 am.
With the bus ride at the start
we will need people at Sleepy
Hollow at 7 am to open registration.
April 28, we will holding a trail cleanup on April 28. The portion is
yet to be determined. The most likely place will be prepping Charlie's property for the race. Any help is appreciated for both the
cleanup and race.

The recipients of this year’s Cross Country Scholarships
are Jordan Holder who attends Muhlenberg High School
and Emma Doughman who attends Conrad Weiser. We
received four very good candidate applications. Listed
below is a small bio on each winner.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR SPONSORS FOR THE
18th Annual Oley Valley Country Classic
Emma who attends Conrad Weiser ranks in the top 20% of
her class and has participated in cross country, winter and
spring track from 9th - 12th grades. She is also involved in
Yearbook, FFA, NHS, Choraleers and chorus 9th – 12th
grades. Emma also qualified in district and state’s for cross
country. Emma wrote in her essay about the health
obstacles she had to overcome to continue the sport she
loves – running - and how she accomplished that. Emma
will be attending Marywood University in the fall.
The Pagoda Pacers are looking for sponsors to support the
18th Annual Oley Valley Country Classic. This 10 mile and 5K
run, taking place this year on November 4 2012 has been a
favorite race of many in the area and we want this race to
continue. If you know of a company or organization interested
in supporting this event please contact:
Jordon who attends Muhlenberg has a 3.9 grade point
average. His cross country running has earned him a twotime county medalist, All Division, All Berks and Track &
Field county medalist. Jordan is also involved in Academic
Challenge and Model UN Club and outside school Boy
Scouts, and active in his church. Jordan wrote in his essay
about the mental aspect of running and how both the physical and mental part of running earned him All Berks honors
in running. He now can apply this discipline into his schoolwork and every day events. Jordan will be attending Penn
State University Main Campus in the fall.
This race is always well attended and has one of the most
beautiful scenic courses in the area. Lets continue to support
another great Berks County run!
The Pagoda Pacers wish both of these individuals much
success in their future all with the other applicants.
Len Burton ([email protected]) or
Barry Goodhart ([email protected]) for details.
TRAIL CREW MAINTENANCE
FRENCH CREEK STATE PARK
We meet every Tuesday evening at 6:00 P.M. The meeting
location is directly across the road from the park office on
Park Road. If you have any questions, call Charlie Crowell,
610-856-7372 or e-mail [email protected].
Thank you to our committee – Sue Jackson, Alicia Bradley, Cliff LePage and Kathy Unruh for their continued help.
Tom Chobot is also on the committee but since one of his
high school runners was an applicant, Tom could not
participate this time.
Applications will open May 1 for the Pacer Members Only
Scholarship.
Entries will close June 30, 2012.

THANK YOU for the following donated door prizes:
By: Sue Jackson
The 22nd Shiver by the River
was one of our most successful
series. In March, we had 304 5K
runners and 165 10K runners.
On average, we have about 280
runners complete the series; this
year, 329 runners completed the
series, with a total of
916
individual registrations.
Our fastest runners were:
Pretzel City Sports
Susan Dunlop – Massage Therapist
Alecia Bradley for various gift baskets

10K Female – Laura Kline 38:36 in Mar
As always, THANK YOU to all the Pacers who participated either
by running, volunteering or both! We sincerely appreciate all of our
volunteers, whether you help us at one race or every race. But
most of all, thanks to all of you who were willing to do whatever was
needed to make this series another success!
The awards ceremony was again held at the Temple Fire Company,
on Madison Ave in Muhlenberg. Thanks to Deb Schlegel for sitting
at the door and enforcing our policy of charging a nominal fee for
the party; to Pres. Polly for helping with the set-up of the trophies
and overseeing the activities of the award’s ceremony and to Ron
Horn for starting each race and announcing the awards.
If anyone has any comments, concerns, or questions concerning
the series, please feel to contact one of the race directors. We do
value your input and we do read the surveys; making modifications when possible. For instance, we added the cones and the
one lane on the bridge after several of our volunteers told us how
congested and dangerous the one intersection had become. In a
future newsletter, we will address some of the specific comments
we received this year.

Any award winners, who were unable to attend the awards
ceremony, can retrieve their award by contacting Sue Jackson.
Once again, thanks for all of the Pacer support, both runners and
volunteers! We hope to see all of you next year.
