Good bye and Good luck to the Class of 2016
Today (Friday 27 May) we said goodbye and good luck to our Year 11 students. We held a special
Leaver’s afternoon to wish them well. Students were presented with their Leavers’ hoodies and
speeches were made. In a few weeks’ time we will be holding their final Agape event.
A new Headboy and Headgirl for Saint John Houghton
Congratulations to Adam Kavanagh and Anna Pancisi who were elected Headboy and Headgirl two
weeks ago. Adam and Anna are former students of English Martyrs Primary School and are looking
forward to getting into their roles in new term. We wish them every success.
Confirmation
Congratulations to students from Saint John Houghton who were confirmed by Bishop Patrick last
Thursday night at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church Eastwood.
Year 8 Briars Residential
'No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar, or puts it under a bed, they put it on a lampstand so
that those who enter may see the light' Luke 8:16.
Our theme for this weekend retreat was 'Step Up and Step Out' and The Briars Team 2016 led this
brilliantly. The first thing we had to do was Step Out of daily life and retreat from this busy world and
the Briars setting was a perfect location. We would like to thank: Angela, Father Dave, Pete, Eleanor,
Naomi, Bea, Jason, Hannah, Jack, Ruth, Shauna, Lewis, Theo, Sophie and Paige for their love and
support. The team work incredibly hard and we do appreciate it! More thanks to our Head Teacher,
Mrs McCarthy and Mr Jorgenson for giving up their free time and weekend to make this retreat
possible. More thanks for the parents and guardians for their support and for seeing the value in this
retreat for our young people. Thank you Mrs Folan, Mr Weightman, Mrs Emery and the parents who
joined us for Mass, it was lovely to see you! And of course to the Year 8 Pilgrims had outstanding
behaviour all weekend, the young people made it as easy for us as they followed instructions, had
wonderful manners and took part fully in all activities. We were very proud of your behaviour at Mass
and several visitors commented positively about your respectfulness and the joy you brought to this
celebration. Well done and thank you.
During the retreat we joined in with community living, enjoyed Morning Prayer of the Church and
Worship Songs, we walked and talked, playing games along the way, we participated in a CAFOD
reflection game and learnt about injustice in our world, we had Mass and night prayer, the young
people had an opportunity to walk on the 'red carpet' and sing loud and proud during singing practice.
We had a SJH Talent Show and a disco and ha special time for Affirmations and a final liturgy. This
really was a time to find a relationship with God. The retreat ended by walking through the Holy Door
of Mercy and I would encourage all Year 8 to follow this up with a visit to our own Door of Mercy in
school. You are welcome to Mass on Saturday evening at 7.00pm at The Briars, please see Rachel
for more information.

SPECIAL SIXES
Friends
Thank you for my friends next door, and my friend across the street, and please help me to be a friend
To each and every one I meet. Amen
Rachel would like to thank the year 6 pupils at Saint Thomas for making her so welcome. Footprints
are being given out to the young people joining Saint John Houghton in September as a sign of the
exciting journey they are making, they are asked to write one thing they are good at and one thing
they are worried about and a current Year 7 pupil will respond. If you would like to volunteer to Buddy
a Year 6, perhaps a brother, sister or friend from your old primary school then please see Rachel.
Year 11
Thank you for being in our Saint John Houghton Family, it would not have been the same without you
and I will miss you all.
This is what the Lord asks of you - to act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with your God.
Love, Rachel
Rachel would like to thank Canon John Berry and Nula for their company and lunch on Thursday.
Door of Mercy
Canon John Berry will be joining us for lunch in school on Wednesday 15 June 2016 and will be
available to hear Reconciliation between 1-2pm Please make an appointment to see Canon John at
Reception or contact Rachel.
Rachel would like to thank Mrs Julia Palmer for her support to the Chaplaincy Department this week
and Liam Knighton, Ellis Reeve, Lyka Lorenzo, Bradley Miller, Lucy Hulse-Russell, Miss Spencer, Miss
Stirland, Scarlett-Iris Mitchell, the ladies in the kitchen.
Here at Saint John Houghton we experience prayer in many ways.
Staff homework for half term.
Christians have always believed that God is a ‘rock like presence and a refuge, a very present help in
times of trouble.’ Adding a stone to make a cairn can be a sign of: A prayer, Remembrance of those
who had shared our journey, a sign of enduring love for those we have lost.
Staff, your homework is to look and find a small stone over the holiday and we shall have a small
display and make a cairn in our staff room. We shall be learning more about cairns during Act of
Worship time next term. Thank you.
Rachel would like to thank and congratulate the parents and Parishioners of: Nathaniel Bradford, Alex
Cullingworth, Marie Estrada, Tara Hall, Alex Leatherland, Zuzanna Leliwa, Cianan O' Kane, Sofia
Burns, Caolan Dobney, Alex Hall, Nathan Hu not, Mia Marquis, Martyna Popek and Anny Riley who
were Confirmed into the Catholic faith last night. This was a beautiful occasion and how lovely to see
and hear Bishop Patrick, Father Andrew and Canon John.
All our young people were active in the service and it is exciting to think of this calibre of young person
in Saint John Houghton and I know the Holy Spirit will lead us forward to serve others before ourselves
in our home community.
Thank you to all our past pupils there last night for 'Guarding your Faith' and teaching our younger
generation how to love. It was great to see you looking so well.
Bishop Patrick asked us all to welcome the Holy Spirit into our hearts and to pray to the Holy Spirit
and ask for wisdom, and ask the Holy Spirit to bring the wisdom of God in so many gentle ways to help
us. He thanked our young people for
wanting to become full members of the
Catholic Church and advised their
parents and teachers to pray for
patience and encouraged us to keep
living out this wonderful witness in our
daily lives.
More thanks to Mrs McCarthy for
joining family and friends for the
Sacrament of Confirmation at Our Lady
of Good Counsel Church, Eastwood and
to the parish choir who were
outstanding and surrounded our young
people with love and prayers.
Parents and parishioners provided a warm welcome and splendid refreshments afterwards. This really
was a great evening for a great generation.
Thank you to Mr Ged Lovelock for DT and Team Chaplaincy working together
Humanities would like to recognise the excellent attitude to
learning of the following Year 9 students;
Amelia Dawes, Jude Cobb, Tamzin Evens, Josh Forbes, Steven
Mitchell, Sarah Storer and Sarah Wolverson.
All students have been excellent role models for others in the
group, in both their attitude and effort.
Computer Scientist of the Month
Our Computer Scientist of the month award goes to two students this
time. Excellent progress and attitude to learning have been
demonstrated by Jessica Szenaiwski and Zac Meadowcroft. Well done!
