Upon completion of this symposium, participants should
be better able to:
Friday, June 22
I Describe the basic principles of how biomedical ethics are
applied to deployments of health information technologies.
I Identify the particular challenges and opportunities of
advanced information technologies in primary care settings.
I Compare the various therapies advocated for men
diagnosed with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain
syndromes (CP/CPPS), including investigative approaches
to managing individual patient symptoms.
I Recognize the pathophysiology of various syndromes,
such as nonbacterial prostatitis, and explain how their
management differs from conventional treatment.
I Explain and identify various causes of knee pain, correctly
utilize diagnostic testing and determine when to appropriately refer for physical therapy or specialist care.
I Examine personal growth and development from a religious
and spiritual perspective, and explore ethical concerns related
to religious and spiritual interventions in clinical practice.
I Identify etiologic factors in the development of head and
neck cancer, including prior exposure to papilloma virus.
I Effectively explain the multidisciplinary approach generally
required for treatment planning and managing patients
with head and neck cancers.
Saturday, June 23
I Recognize the benefits and limitations of acupuncture and
its appropriate application in clinical practice for patients
with chronic back pain and headache.
I Describe the normal cycle and patterns of growth hormone, recognize primary and secondary growth hormone
deficiency and examine the current use of growth hormone
supplementation by some practitioners as an anti-aging
drug.
I Recognize the signs and symptoms of primary and secondary testosterone deficiency, and formulate an appropriate
treatment plan for the individual patient.
I Examine the use of testosterone replacement as an anti-aging
medication in healthy males.
I Examine innovations in medical and surgical approaches to
the management of advanced heart failure.
Sunday, June 24
I Identify the patient with abnormal liver enzymes through
appropriate use of diagnostic testing.
I Effectively explain causes of abnormal liver function tests,
treatable causes of liver disease and optimal approaches to
treatment.
I Explain the various etiologies of abnormal uterine bleeding
in the perimenopausal woman, and initiate an appropriate
workup.
I Examine the role of hormone replacement therapy,
including the risks associated with unopposed estrogen
therapy, and recognize the danger signs of early carcinoma.
I Evaluate the various medical and surgical options for
managing abnormal uterine bleeding, and determine when
to refer to a specialist.
I Implement the most recent U.S. Preventive Task Force
recommendations on PSA screening in asymptomatic males.
I Differentiate between prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
screening and PSA testing, and identify the nuance of
current PSA evaluation and treatment of prostate cancer
across various age groups.
