Dear Parent or Guardian:
Your child is currently learning to write a friendly letter that
includes the address, date, greeting, body, closing, and signature.
Here is your chance to help your child practice this important skill.
In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your
child to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening.
Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your child return it
tomorrow.
Remember, parents are a child’s first teacher. Thank you for your
time and energy in making learning fun and exciting for your child.

FRIENDLY LETTER
Parent Pointer —
Few people write letters anymore. With telephones and e-mail, the art
of writing letters is almost dead. But you need to remember that
everyone enjoys receiving friendly mail. They especially like it when
mail is addressed directly to them. A friendly letter from someone you
know or a close friend can make your day. Letters from friends can
make a friendship stronger. Letters from relatives make them feel
closer. The best way to make sure you receive a friendly letter is to
send one. Friendly letters are a great way to keep in touch and send
thank-you notes.
Reading in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It —
DIRECTIONS: Read the Parts of a Friendly Letter reference sheet to
your parent or guardian. Discuss the parts of a friendly letter. Do
this to make sure you both understand them. Then give your parent or
guardian the Adult’s Copy: Writing a Letter page. Tell him or her to
write a friendly letter to you. Remind him or her to include all the
parts of a friendly letter. You write a friendly letter to your parent or
guardian on the Child’s Copy: Writing a Letter page. Trade letters
with each other and read them aloud. After reading them, make sure
each one has all the parts of a friendly letter.

After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to show
what you know.

Parts of a Friendly Letter
Greeting
The greeting of the letter
begins with the word Dear
and ends with a comma.
Heading
The heading includes the address
and the date; write it in the upper
right-hand corner.
