Celebrating Our Learning
By the time you read this newsletter, you may have already seen your child’s report
card and had your parent-teacher conferences. Hopefully, you had a chance to have
conversations with your child about their learning and behaving. Undoubtedly, you have
celebrated their many strengths, and you have had an honest dialogue about their challenges. What might their next steps be toward improvement? Teachers polled their
students and here are some of their responses:

Music Notes
Voluntary Christmas Choir for Grades 4 & 5 will be performing at The
Forks Market on December 8 at 2:00. Members are to meet in the Center
Court at the opposite end of the Tower Elevator at 1:40. Remember to wear
your JT shirt and a festive hat!
Christmas Concerts – save the date!!
Kindergarten, Grades 1 & 2:
Tuesday, December 17th - 2:00 pm & 6:30 pm
COSTUME: All K-2 students need to wear a WHITE SHIRT
Grade 2 cast members will be given specific wardrobe instructions
Grades 3, 4 & 5
Wednesday, December 18th - 2:00 pm & 6:30 pm
COSTUME: All 3-5 students need to wear a GREEN SHIRT
Grade 5 cast members will be given specific wardrobe instructions
For the evening performance, students are asked to be in their classrooms by
6:10 p.m.
Doors will be open for the evening performances at 6:00 p.m.

Bullying has been in the news a lot lately. The Manitoba Government has a 17 page document that covers
their position on bullying in Manitoba schools. It is an interesting read for parents as it simply and clearly
outlines what bullying looks like and sounds like. It offers clear information and strategies for parents and
caregivers.

As the temperature dips down and December looms, thoughts turn to Santa Claus. Canada Post has a long
tradition of helping Santa by answering letters sent to him. It takes over 9000 volunteers to answer the
over one million letters that they get each year. You can write your letter to Santa in any language, including
Braille, and he will write back to you. They must be mailed no later than December 17 in order to get a reply
and do not require a stamp. Santa's mailing address is:

Santa has gone digital! This free, fun, interactive form letter to Santa will suit young and old. Make sure
your speakers are on, because once you fill in the blanks, and send your letter, you will hear prompts from
the elves to put stamps on a digital envelope. Watch as your child’s letter is magically transported directly
to Santa, and see him “in person” as he receives it and sends you one back! The banner advertising is annoying but not totally distracting, and the sound levels necessary to hear the Elves and the music may need
some attention to volume control. The right side menu offers a variety of ways to interact with Santa. Who
knew that Elves could Tweet?

SKYPE in the Library!
On Monday, October 28, some students gathered in the Library over their lunch time to talk to some new
friends…in Aliso Viejo, California. Mrs. Paul joined the ISLM Skype Project and was matched with St. Mary’s
school http://www.smaa.org/st-marys-story in Aliso Viejo, California.
Ms Code joined Mrs. Paul and the students in the Library to record the student responses. Student representatives came from grades:
1 Ava, Joseph
2 Ella, Julia
3 Catherine
4 Halle, Matthew
5 Rece, Riley, Thomas
Students came prepared with answers to mutual questions about favourite authors and what the Library of
the future will contain. After the formal discussion, with each grade responding to the other was over, the
students just relaxed and the real dialogue began. It was breath taking!
Our students answered questions about winter (Do you have to make a tunnel through the snow to get to
school?) and asked questions about southern California’s winter (What do you need to wear to go to school?).

They talked about sports, school hours, uniforms versus regular clothes, and snow/forest fire smoke and smog
days when school may be closed among many things. Teachers were misty eyed just watching the unbridled
curiosity of children unfold as the two groups of students exchanged information. There were also big smiles
as our younger students told of having 12 feet of snow last year! We will be SKYPEing again in Janu ary from
outside JT, sharing what we do and what it looks like in winter in Winnipeg to students in California, who might
just have to wear a jacket to school that day, if it’s chilly!
Mrs. Phillips’ Class can Power Point!
Mrs. Phillips’ class recently completed an inquiry unit with Mrs. Paul. They began by researching an animal that
they wanted to know more about using non-fiction books in the Library. They began their research with questions about their animal's habitat, food, appearance and things they do. Then they used the laptops in the
computer lab to find additional information and searched and saved Creative Commons, copy-right free shared
images to match their animal. The students put their facts and pictures into a six slide Power Point presentation. Mrs. Hildebrand and two visiting grandparents, were surprised at how confidently each student located
and narrated their own presentation in the Library. Mrs. Phillips’ grade 2’s worked hard over several weeks and
were very proud to share their new learning.

Ms Sakundiak would like to improve on managing her time so she has time for painting and drawing.
Mrs. Paul will work on getting better at remembering people's names.
Mrs Hepworth said, “I wish I was a graceful ballroom dancer.”
Mrs. Wilson would like to find more time to spend with her family.
Mrs. Niblett would like to do more one on one writing with her students.
Ms Code would like to read more books.
Mrs. Aquin would like to get better at remembering her students’ names by January (I confuse them by
talking crooked, to the wrong person all the time).
Mrs. Phillips will be working towards her goal of organizing her time.
Mr. Windsor would like to remember to submit his classroom attendance without being reminded.
Ms Sandulak would like to work on making better meals for her kids and keeping her school office organized.
Mrs. Nightingale would like to get better at keeping her closet organized.
Ms. Irwin would like to get better at some of the dance moves Mrs. Brandt-Douglas is teaching her.
Mrs Martino would like to get better at keeping her desk clean.
Mr. Kroetsch would like to take all of his paper work and store it on a flash drive.
Mrs. Klassen needs to work on remembering all the words to all the Christmas songs! And she also mixes
up kids’ names a lot.
Mrs. Kreigl needs to get to bed before midnight and need to not snack after 8.
Mrs. Doell would like to get better at baking.
Ms Mitzok would like to get better at writing by taking time to write in a journal every day.
Mrs. Irvine would like to be more committed to exercising.
Mrs. Hildebrand wants to get better at responding to emails on time (she snuck her response in after the
deadline!)

KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION EVENING
If your child was born in 2009, he or she is eligible to start Kindergarten in September,
2014 in River East Transcona School Division.
Please plan to join us for River East Transcona School Division’s Kindergarten Information
Evening coming to a school near you in January. Please watch for more information in the
next few weeks. During this session, parents will learn more about our kindergarten program language choices that are available in the school division and information on bussing.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION AT JOSEPH TERES SCHOOL
Registration for Kindergarten for the school year 2014/2015 will take place Monday,
March 3, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the meeting area, and Tuesday to Friday, March 4-7, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the school office. Kindergarten registration is open to all children born in 2009. This means that your child must have
their fifth birthday on or before December 31, 2014. In order to register your child, you
must bring two pieces of identification that provide proof of address such as your Driver’s License and your Manitoba Health Card PLUS one piece of identification that provides
proof of age of your child such as their Birth Certificate or Baptismal Certificate. This
information is very important and must be presented at the time of registration.

Joseph Teres is pleased to announce that we raised $363.21 for UNICEF for National Unicef Day. The students and staff at our school enjoyed wearing their Winnipeg Jets, JT Jets jerseys on October 24th and participated in “wacky hair” day on October 31st.

Message from the chair…
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing Chairperson Ron Seniuk, Vice Chair Person
Jennifer Downey, Secretary Jodi Smith, Fundraising Rep Tabitha Bear, JT lunch specials Rebecca Ray
and Jennifer Downey for all our their hard work over the past few years. You all have been wonderful
leaders in your roles and you will be missed.
The JTPTC has had some changes this year to the council which include myself as becoming Chair. I
would like to welcome Rebbeccah Shupenia as our new Treasurer, Debra Takeuchi as our new secretary, Christine Robertson as our new fundraising Rep, and Rebbeccah Shupenia, Nicole MacDonald,
Shannon Spicer and Tiffany Schellenberg as our new coordinators for the JT Lunch Specials.
I would like to thank Michelle Hammerberg, Shelley Sitka, Kim Offenlach, Jodi Smith, Lynne Tanner,
Rebbeccah Shupenia and all the other volunteers for putting on a wonderful Halloween Soc-Hop for
our school. A special thanks goes to Papa Murphy’s as well for donating over 50 gift cards that we used
for numerous prizes. A great time was had by parents and children alike.
As your parent council, our jobs are to help provide a better environment for our kids to learn and
grow through their education, by working with the school and community to accomplish this. We are
always looking for input from parents to help us achieve our goals for our children’s school. We are always in need of new faces with fresh ideas. Our meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every
month at 6 pm in the staff room. Everyone is invited to come and participate. Babysitting services are
also available. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday December 3rd, 2013.

Fundraising….
This year the JTPTC decided to commit to one fundraiser, Nestle Chocolates, which will be in the
spring. We have been very successful with Nestle in the past. They will be distributed after spring
break. More information will be sent out in March, 2014.If you have any questions about this fundraiser, or ideas for other fundraisers, please feel free to email Christine at

Christmas Hamper:
With the colder weather here and the holidays approaching, it is time for us to think of those in
need.
Joseph Teres School will be collecting non-perishable food items for their annual Christmas Hamper.
Collection will take place from Monday December 2nd, to Friday December 13th. There will be
boxes set up in the meeting area. The boxes will be delivered to the Transcona Food Bank to help
families right in our area! In the past Winnipeg Harvest has matched our donations so it is a great
opportunity to really help in our community.
Koats for Kids
On behalf of the United Way Koats for Kids program, Joseph Teres School is accepting gently used
winter clothing. Items needed are Jackets, snow pants, hats, mittens, scarves and boots.
Donations can be dropped off at school between 8:00a.m.and 4:00p.m.as well as at any Winnipeg Fire
Paramedic station, Perth’s location, or AMJ Campbell Van Lines at 12-1333 Niakwa Road.
