BARNESS
IRMA SUZANNE BARNESS, a noted local artist, died on January 11, 2013. She was 86.
IRMA was a woman of many talents and
gifts. She was admitted to the distinguished
High School of Music and Art in New York
City, where she played the piano and flute.
She then went to Bucknell University, where
she took her first art course. It was at Bucknell where she fell in love with art and also
with HERBERT BARNESS.
After graduation from Bucknell, IRMA married HERBERT BARNESS, who became a real
estate developer in the region, and moved to
Bucks County and then Montgomery County.
She took art classes, painted, and did sculpture while raising a family of two daughters,
LYNDA BARNESS and NANCY BARNESS,
with her husband. She loved painting people,
flowers, and creations from her own imagination. Many of her paintings feature her travel
experiences and family gatherings. Art was
IRMA'S very personal endeavor. After their
children became adults, IRMA and HERB
BARNESS returned to Bucks County, and
IRMA painted full-time. Her interest in art
was enhanced by some special teachers over
the years: JACQUES FABERT, RICHARD LIBERMAN, SELMA BURKE, MR. GOTTLIEB,
PAUL GORKA, and recently GWEN KOTHS.
She attended Cheltenham and Abington Art
Centers, Allens Lane Art Center, The Museum
School, and The Barnes Foundation.
Her work has been exhibited at the New Hope
Golden Door Gallery, Carol Schwartz Gallery,
Doylestown Library, and have been featured
in many area art shows, as well as winning a
number of prizes. She gave a retrospective
of her work in the summer of 2012 and exhibited over 100 works of art at that time.
She is survived by her two daughters LYNDA
and NANCY, grandchildren JENNIFER (and
DANIEL), MELISSA (and CHARLES), JULIE
(and DAVID), and ELIZABETH, along with
four great-grandchildren who always brought
a big smile to her face. She leaves behind

her husband of 65 years, HENRY GELLER,
D.D.S., a Major in the Army Air Force. They
married on June 1, 1947, making their home
in Mt. Airy, and summered in Atlantic
City. EADIE was active as an officer for both
her synagogue sisterhood and for the
women’s auxiliary of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children; alongside her Commodore
husband, she was very active at the Margate
City Yacht Club in New Jersey. Ever the businesswoman, after their children were in
school, Eadie worked part time at her friend’s
boutique; she enjoyed this so much that she
decided to buy the business, The Little
Shoppe, located in Jenkintown, PA. Her business enterprise expanded to two boutiques
and a gift store, Cache-Cache, also in Jenkintown. Eadie and Henry relocated to Boynton
Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida in 1996.
She continued her love of writing and fashion
as she penned the column, Garb Gab, for her
community in Florida. She is survived by her
sister, IRENE GUTNICK, husband HENRY,
children, SCOTT GELLER, KIM (MARK)
DAVIDSON, SHIRA GELLER, and her grandchildren, BRANDON GELLER, JACK DAVIDSON and LAUREN DAVIDSON. Please direct

LEVINTHAL
KATHE TESCHNER (SOLIS-COHEN) JACOBY,
86, of Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, one of
the first computer programmers, died on December 16, 2012 of pneumonia at Abington
Hospital. She was the daughter of MYER SOLIS-COHEN (1877-1960) and ROSEBUD
(TESCHNER) SOLIS COHEN (1903-1990),
and was proud to continue the work of a
prominent Philadelphia medical family that
traces its lineage to the American Revolution.
She was born July 15, 1926 in Philadelphia
and received her BA in mathematics from
Swarthmore College in 1946 and her MS in
mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1948. At the University of Pennsylvania she programmed Eniac (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer), the first
electronic general-purpose computer, and
Edvac, one of its early successors. She continued working as a programmer and engineering supervisor for Philco (later
Philco-Ford) and was a part-time lecturer at
the Graduate School of Engineering at Drexel
Institute of Technology. She moved to the
Franklin Institute Research Laboratories in
1964 where she worked as a senior research
engineer, but two years later her family relocated to London, England, where she worked
for EMI (Electrical and Musical Industries) as
a senior systems analyst. In 1968 she returned to Philadelphia and her previous position at the Franklin Institute. In 1969 she
started work for First Pennsylvania Bank as a
systems consultant until she retired in 1990.
While at First Pennsylvania she served for
one year on a Governor's State Commission
to improve the efficiencies of state government. In addition to her programming and
management talents, she was especially interested in human-machine interfaces and
design automation.
She was a member of the Valley Forge Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as Regent of the Germantown Chapter from 1992 to 1995 and from
2001 to 2006. KATHE worked tirelessly to facilitate the merger of the Germantown Chapter with the Valley Forge Chapter, preserving
the work of Germantown Chapter and insuring its continuance into a new century of
service. In the Valley Forge Chapter, KATHE
served on the Audit & Bylaw Committee and
was chairman of Commemorative Events and
Constitution Week Committees. She also
held numerous chairmanships in the Germantown Chapter. KATHE will be honored at
the DAR State Memorial Service in April

KARET
SYLVIA M. KARET (nee MANDEL) passed
away from complications of a fall on January
20, 2013 at the venerable age of 99 and half.
She was born on August 9, 1913. She was a
lady before her time. Most girls of her generation, born to immigrants as first generation Americans, were not sent for higher education. Although she only spoke Yiddish until
she entered grade school, she was academically talented. She graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls and went on to
college at the University of Pennsylvania,
where she received a B.A., and an M.S. in social work. She was married to EDWARD
KARET, ESQ. for 62 years before he died in
2001. After having two children, TOBY
(EISENSTEIN) and JULIA, she returned to
school to earn an M.S. in Library Science
from Drexel. She began a full-time career as
a high school librarian in the Philadelphia
school system. Her first position was at Thomas Edison High School, followed by a transfer to the Philadelphia High School for Girls.
When the new Northeast High School
opened, she became the Head Librarian, and
worked there until she retired in 1979 .
SYLVIA was an independent, intelligent
woman, who was interested in art, the theater, classical music, politics and parades. She
loved travel, and with ED went to Japan,
Hong Kong, Africa and Russia before most
Americans were venturing that far. She was
an avid reader. After moving from Northeast
Philadelphia to center city, she frequented the
Rittenhouse Square library on a weekly basis.
Until a year ago she regularly attended
classes at Temple Association for Retired
People (now OLLI). In middle age, she and
ED took up swimming for health and exercise. At the age of 97, she was still swimming
half a mile, 5 days a week. Until Thanksgiving
of this year she was living independently in
an apartment in center city. She is survived
by her daughters and her sons-in-law
(BRUCE EISENSTEIN and DAN WARD), by 6
grandchildren (ERIC EISENSTEIN, ANDREW
EISENSTEIN, ILANA EISENSTEIN, DYLAN
WARD-KARET, JESSE WARD-KARET and
MAYA WARD KARET) and by 10 great-grandchildren. Contributions may be made to a

ROBINSON
STEPHEN LANE PASTNER of Ann Arbor, MI,
passed away Saturday, December 29 at the
University of Michigan Hospital, surrounded
by his loving family. He was 69. Born May
19, 1943 in Brooklyn, NY, STEVE was a 1964
graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.
He received his PhD in anthropology from
Brandeis University in 1971, with a focus on
Baluchi people in Pakistan. Joining the faculty at the University of Vermont in 1970,
STEVE subsequently received tenure and
taught in the anthropology department for
many years, retiring in 2002. He went on to
serve as an adjunct faculty member at the
University of Michigan after his wife JUDITH
IRVINE'S appointment as professor there.
In every way a true Renaissance man, STEVE
was a self-taught and accomplished musician
(on instruments such as the banjo, guitar,
lute and orpharion). He was also a skilled
sculptor, and his subjects reflect his love of
history and music. STEVE'S bronze pieces
depict many themes, from great classical
composers to Saxon warriors. More of his
work and music can be accessed at http://tinyurl.com/b8rqf66. STEVE loved hiking and
canoeing, and enjoyed spending time rowing
on the Huron River. He also had an enduring
interest in many environmental and political
causes, and was never shy in voicing his
opinion or in volunteering time for these
causes. STEVE'S greatest passion was his
family. A devoted father and husband, he had
been looking forward to spending more time
with his grandchildren, including new grandson MICAH. Steve is survived by his wife JUDITH IRVINE; daughters DEBORAH PASTNER
(INGRID YOUNG) and REBECCA PASTNER

honor to Texas Freedom Network (Austin,
TX) or the Humane Society of Huron Valley
(Ann Arbor, MI)

Dearest Daddy,
We think of you every day and smile as we
remember and discuss some of your funny
sayings. Time has softened somewhat your
leaving us, but we miss you every day. We
still listen for your special whistle in a crowd
and are disappointed when we do not hear it.
It’s lonely when we get together, especially
at holidays and you and Mother are not there
in person, We drink a toast to both of you
and remember how fortunate we are to have
had you as our daddy. We have our wonderful memories to sustain us and speak about
you to the new generation that didn’t know
you. You still have our love and devotion.

JEWISH EXPONENT

Judaism isn’t just what we believe, or the prayers we recite or the laws we observe. It’s
also about the way we live. How we interact with others. The values we practice. The
customs and traditions we embrace and pass down, from one generation to the next.
“My father has taught me – as his father taught
him – that providing meticulous service and
personal attention is not a matter of choice. It
is an obligation that I have to our community.
Life isn’t about living for yourself. It’s about
helping the less fortunate, contributing to the
quality of life enjoyed by the entire community
and demonstrating a commitment to tzedakah.
As did each member of the Levine family
before me, I measure success by the feeling
that comes with doing something to help
comfort others. A simple thank you is the
ultimate reward.
L’dor, V’dor. It’s who we are. It’s what I am.
Now in its fifth generation of family ownership, Joseph Levine & Sons continues to
ensure that the memories of our loved ones live on in our hearts.”
