PORTLAND — An ironworker injured
when he fell from a ladder at a southern
Oregon dam has sued PacifiCorp and several contractors, seeking more than $25
million.
The Oregonian reports that the lawsuit
says Joshua J. Lang suffered a broken back
and other injuries on May 18, 2012, when he
was working at the Soda Springs Dam. His
lawyer says he fell an estimated 25 feet and
now uses a wheelchair, although he can

The suit filed last week in Multnomah
County Circuit Court says the dam was operated by PacifiCorp.
The suit alleges the ladder lacked nonslip rungs and was placed at too steep an

north coast of Oregon.
In a statement Monday, the police said
the investigation began in December and
led investigators to recover more than 150
crab pots this month, many with rotting
crabs or crab parts.
The police identified the owner of the
fishing vessel Valkyrie as 34-year-old Aron
Steinbach of Bay City and said he was accused of several violations, including not
having tags for buoys and pots, setting crab
pots for more than 14 days without taking
them in, and wasting the crab.
Police say a man who had once been
captain of the Valkyrie, 30-year-old
Thomas White of Nehalem, was cited for
not having a commercial fishing license.

EUGENE (AP) — Oregon
state traffic planners are
working on long-term plans
to speed traffic along the 50year-old Randy Pape Beltline
in north Eugene, but it’s a job
that might be a quarter of a
billion dollars and at least a
decade away.
The highway wasn’t designed to handle the 90,000
vehicles in a typical day that
now drive over spans crossing the Willamette River between River Road and the
Delta Highway, the Eugene
Register-Guard reports.
The stretch has closely
spaced interchanges and
short ramps that were suitable when the freeway ran
through mostly rural territory, but urban development
now surrounds it, making for
stop-and-go traffic and a
place on the state’s list of
roads most prone to collisions.
It averages 60 crashes a
year, most of them rear-enders resulting from sudden
stops or merging. Five have
been fatal.
“It’s kind of become more
of a bumper-car alley than
anything,” said Deb Elder,
who tries to avoid the highway between 3 and 7 p.m.
The state Department of
Transportation has some
short-term steps in mind,
such as extending some onramps.
It will present a draft plan
for the long-term improvement of the segment at an
open house today. Among its
features: options for a new
river bridge, roads parallel to
the Beltline for merging and
exiting traffic, and more interchange adjustments.

She was born to Fred and
Millie Naught on the family
farm in
Thornton,
Washington.
She attended
school in Pine
City. After
graduating
from high

beautician’s
license from the Spokane
School of Beauty.
She married Eugene
Hockema in 1954. They
started their married life in
the Alsea area, moving to
Corvallis and then settling
in Philomath.
Donna worked for many
years in the insurance field,
retiring from State Farm.
Donna enjoyed fishing
and camping with her husband, and spending time
with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her
husband, Eugene Hockema;
her sons, Don Hockema and
Fred Hockema (Sally Hockema); daughter Sandy
(Hockema) Hilborn (Steve
Hilborn); grandchildren,
Amanda Hilborn, Jennifer
Grimm (Chris Grimm),
Joseph Hockema (Jasmine
Hockema) and Nathan
Hilborn; great-grandchildren, Laighla, Lilly, Conner
and Tucker; her sister, Patty
Harvey; and brothers, Gerald and Gary Naught.
A graveside service will
take place at 11 a.m.
