WORLD CUP
The heavens opened when the first members of the seventy-four
strong Australian team arrived in Sydney for the World Cup in
late March. There had already been several days of torrential
rain before our arrival. Consequently, quagmire conditions prevailed a t the Sydney International Shooting Complex and a t least
one truck was bogged, providing everyone with some entertainment while they watched the poor driver try to dig i t out.
O U R OLYMPIC TEAM
Congratulations must go to our selected Olympic Team of
Deserie, Michael, Russell, Lisa, David, Clive, Natasha and
Anne Maree. With them and the team officials go our very
best wishes on a successful event.
RANGE APPROVALS
With the establishment of the National Firearms Laws one
would have thought that the guidelines for range approvals
around Australia would have been identical. Information is
that safety margins and distances are varying from State to
State and all the blame apparently cannot be directed to
police departments or bureaucrats.
It appears that in some States bodies calling themselves the
"peak body" for shooting have had significant input into
range guidelines for all disciplines and these "bodies" do
not, or have not, a representative of our State Clay Target
Associations. Surely in each State it would be reasonable
to expect the State Clay Target Association would be the
only body consulted in ACTA disciplines. I hope that we can
address and resolve this issue to the satisfaction of all very
NATIONAL OFFICE OFFICIAL OPENING
The official opening of the National Office during our
Nationals was very well attended and went off without a
hitch. Those who did attend enjoyed the BBQ and musical
entertainment afterwards and many have requested that each
year during the Nationals the ACTA should conduct such an
evening for the benefit of shooters and their families. This is
certainly a possibility and will be discussed at our next Exec-
After the first few days the weather became progressively better
and eventually became quite hot. So much so, that a red bellied
black snake decided to come out and sun itself dailv on the rock
wall on the Clay Target Range. This entertainment lasted for
several davs while volunteers and ~ o l i c edecided how to deal with
the reptile". Eventually, a t great k s k to life and limb, someone
managed to get i t into a box and it was re-located.
Unlike the Oceal>ins wh~.t.c fu<,d .iuppl~t-iwere limirrd, ar the
\Vul.ld Cup. ti dlnlng rc:nr for reams was provided with 3 cuntir~unus supply of hot meals, drinks and other goodies. A coffee van on
the Clay Target Range was also very well patronised.
The team was accommodated a t the Country Comfort RSL Resort
a t Rooty Hill. There was universal approval of this venue, not
least because the meals were so good and so cheap a t the adjacent
RSL Club. Especially happy with the accommodation was team
Masseur, Darien Roach who, on the first night found himself in a
four-poster double bed with a spa hath in the bathroom. When he
was moved on the second night, he thought he was coming down
out of the clouds to he with the rest of us peasants. Lo and behold,
he got what we called the "penthouse suite" because the room was
not only larger and equally luxurious, hut this room had the spa
bath in the corner of the bedroom! The good Doctor and I, when
we inspected his palatial suite, decided that i t was really a more
suitable abode for a Manager and a Doctor, hut relented when
Darien begged and pleaded to stay there (only joking, Darien).
Because the Country Comfort was a n official hotel, buses ran regularly between there and the Range and I heard few if any complaints about this system.

delight to watch, giving a fine demonstration of her skills and
walking away with the gold medal and a Finals World Record 95 in
this event.
Deserie made the Final in the Womens Double Trap as well but
regrettably slipped from fourth to sixth, while Annemaree Roberts
just missed out an the Final in a shootoff, finishing seventh.
The greatest excitement was i n the Mens Double Trap where
Russell Mark made his "mark" by winning the gold medal i n fine
style. He went in with a margin of three targets up his sleeve and
knew by the time the last few targets were i n the air that he could
not be beaten. Just to give the crowd a thrill, he caused a huge
gasp when he missed hy a country mile both targets in his second
to last pair. To prove he could still hit them, he then smoked the
last pair! Michael Diamond shot 138 i n the same event but was,
regrettably, penalised three targets far missing a squad - a hard
lesson to learn as Michael himselfsaid. Stephen Haberman is also
to be congratulated for his MQS shoot of 138, which was up to
Finals standard.
Deserie Wakefield-Baynes, third in women's trap.
The shooting was extremely interesting with a very high standard
evident from the 85 countries present and Australian team
members, for the most part, did themselves proud.
There was some drama on the official training day for Mens Trap
when the bolts let go and one of the t r a m fell off the wall. fcrtunstily without injuring auyone. 'I'hl.~ t l l ~ layout

Several team members were not only coping with the pressure of
the competition but also with the pressure of personal traumas
with ill family members or, in the case of Tom l r n e l ; a car accident an the way to the Range on the day of his second round of
Trap. This would have seriously shaken him and explains why his
second round did not match his first day's result when he shot a
fine 74. Michael Diamond made the Final in this event but found
the going tough finishing sixth. Michael was quoted in the media
as saying that he was feeling the pressure of a hometown event.
All other Australians interviewed echoed this feeling. Clearly
there is a need for more training in this area.
A media centre was on site where journalists, mostly from the
print media, were based. The interest in the Australian team was
high with many media representatives, including those not on site,
wanting to interview the hetter known team members almost on a
daily basis. I personally fielded about a dozen calls i n the first few
days and other team members received calls as well. I t was difficult for Michael and Russell in particular to move more that 20
metres without being stopped by media or well wishers from volunteers and spectators. This a result of the way the Range is
designed, as it is necessary for shooters to move through the public
area to reach the layouts.
As far as possible, rve tried to protect team mebers from excessive
media interest by asking journalists to approach coaches first and
certainly not to approach shooters until the competition and Final
had concluded. For the most part this request was respected.
Media were also advised that once the Olympic team is selected
the" would be able to come to the final trainine

Coaches, Greg Chan and Luca Scribani Rossi were ever-present

the team. As always, Darien Roach worked hard for the shooters
who called on his massage skills both a t the Range and in the
evening a t the hotel.

In excess of 40 shooters. alone with familv members. made this
years Australian representation the largest for many ;ears.
Our current World Championship team of Phil Headon, Bill Iles,
David Fox. Steve Haberman and Arthur Turner were also the
team to contest the Glenn Cup event.
With the exception of 1 day, the weather was not what we have
came to expect on visits to New Zealand in that sun shone brightly
throughout the championships. The grounds were excellently presented, the hospitality was even better and I was not aware of one
genuine complaint about anything from anyone. What more could
you want a t such an event.
We were away to a brilliant start with Queenslander Dave
Dundon winning the first National event - the skeet with a score
of 1501150. Other Australians to show out were Ma1 Briggs (1st
AA), Jon Whittakers (the old fox 2 n d in A), Glen Castelaro (1st in
C...samehow I am of the opinion that with a 100+ break, he will
not be in C grade should he return to NZ) and Toni Dierke being
victorious in the ladies section Australia also were the winners of
the 5 person team event. Max Barton, Guy Beddington, Arthur
Dierke, Toby Witt and Dave Dundon.
Queensland were to keep the pressure on again in the next championship with veteran shooter Bill Stevens carding the only possible 50150 in the Ball Trao - the onlv wav to win a National title.
Steven Parks started hi; carnoair; in <he Junior section with a
fine win and our only other placegetter was Bryan (Cats) Rafferty
with 3rd in AA.
Page 4
On to the Double Rise Chanlpionship and champion Bill Iles was
to add the first of two 2000 kiwi titles to his impressive trophy
'cupboard'. Bill shot a score of 38140 to take the HOA honours. I
never believed it possible, but Bill seems to be
shooting as well now as he ever has. Our other
winners were Steve (Corvette) Atkins and David
Fox, 1st and 2nd respectively and Tim Catling
being the best veteran
With 3 titles gone and still no home country
winner, host club member and tireless worker,
Gavin Searle said enough is enough. We have to
do something - and something he did do.
Winning the minis championship with a score of
27/27. Our only competitor to grace the winners
dais was David Fox with 2nd in AA.
Bill Iles second HOA was ta be the Triples
Championship recording 1001100. In AA Sam
Forsyth took out 2nd with Arthur Turner 3rd,
Tim Catling was 2nd in A and 1st in Veterans
and Steven Parks was the best Junior.
Gavin Searle again looked a t the way things
were going in relation to kiwi pride and said if
Bill can do it, so can I. Gavin was also to add a
second HOA in the week to his bag by winning
the Single Rise shooting 3001300. Our tap shooters were Terry
(Barzurk) Boucher and Arthur Turner 2nd and 3rd AA and again
Steven Parks showed that he is a junior with a future by winning
the junior section.
The Single Barrel was the next title contested and again New
Zealand came out on top with Keith Livingstone with the only
50150. Jon Whittakers and Tony Sehaefer were to Finish 1st and
2nd in AA and Tim Catling continued his good form winning 2nd
place in A grade
The last title up for grabs was the Pointscore and Steve Haberman
recorded the only 1501150 to give him the top spat. Our only other
prize winner was Sam Forsyth taking 2nd placing in AA
The Glenn Cup Team event was conducted in excellent atmosphere in front of a large crowd and our team demonstrated why it
is the current best in the world by not dropping a target. A great
exhibition of shooting appreciated by all watching. Well done Austr2lis
We were also to take our fair share of the High Guns with Bill Iles
AA Tim Catling both A grade and Veterans and Steven Parks
winning the Junior title.
Toni Dierke, winner of the Ladies
N.Z. Skeet Championship.

Sydney International Shooting Centre, Liverpool, the
Olympic and Paralympic Games shooting venue was host
to approximately 700 shooters from 85 Member Federations
who took part in the March Wodd Cup. The shooting centre
which was officially opened in September 1999 in time for the
Oceania Championships, was well received by athletes and
officials who collectively described it, as did the International Shooting Sport Federation, a s the best shooting range
With the Olympic Games following only months after the
World Cup, the Sydney Organising Committee for the
Olympic Games (SOCOG) took the decision to install many of
the additional facilities which will be used a t Games time
earlier than what had initially been planned. This enabled
shooters to experience some of the facilities which will be in
use in September.
Officially opened by ISSF President Olegario Vasquez Rana,
the World Cup, the largest ISSF competition ever conducted
in Australia, was conducted in typical autumn conditions
which ranged from heavy rain in the early days of competition
which made conditions difficult for the clay target shooters, to
the heat of the summer sun.
The 33 ISSF appointed Jury Members who will also be officiating a t Games time were full of praise for the level of
competency shown by the competition officials, a number of
whom had officiated a t the 1996 Atlanta Games, and gained
the confidence of shooters from day one.
Under the direction of Technical Delegates Gary Anderson and
Jesus Elizondo, the World Cup was also used by SOCOG
as a Test Event for the September Olympi Games. This provided SOCOG with the opportunity to test the shooting
centre under exacting competition conditions, as well as the
various functional areas and hundreds of volunteers involved
with the Olympic Games. As a result SOCOG, with the
support of ISSF officials, has identified a number of areas
which will be addressed prior to the Olympic Games to ensure
that shooters receive the best possible conditions to compete
for Olympic medals in September SOCOG appreciates the
support received from ISSF President Olegario Vasquez
Rana, Secretary General Horst Schreiber and ISSF officials, which greatly assisted the Organising Committee with
its planning and conduct for what the ISSF has described as
the most successful Test Event that shooting has experienced and an excellent rehearsal for the XVII Olympic Games

I would like to dedicate this copy of the MTB to the "Non Shooting
Workers", who do so much a t our Cluh. They are a t every Cluh.
They come in the form of Secretary, Treasurer, Kitchen Ladies,
some help mow the complex and many otherjohs. So thanks to our
hand or workers who never shoot a possihle but are always ready
to helo. Thanks to all!
28-3-00 Bible Day
Thc day the blble came, I rook my iwfo to Blngo aud went on to
Harry's plaec. hc was uut side readlng the paper.
He said "did you get the hihle yet?". I said no it was too early for
my postman yet and I asked could I have a look a t his. He said no,
I am locked out, I pulled the door and i t locked and I haven't got a
key. He had rang the locksmith, hut while waiting we started to
demolish the house to get in when the locksmith arrived. I t wasn't
long before I was glancing through the Bible. So leaving Harry to
restore his house I was off to read the hihle.
I didn't know "Col Burt", hut after reading CTSN for many years
I know the contribution Col has put into Clay Targets. To Col's
loved ones & dear friends I send my deepest sympathy.
Last copy I welcomed new staff to ACTA and again welcome
Rehecca & Daniel. You are getting out numbered down there
Andrew. I t was great to see our new National Office on the cover,
also good to see so many shooters express themselves in 'Your
say". For and against, different opinions, it all makes good reading
& shows interest in the direction of our sport. Keep \vriting.
There was an old duck shooter because of rules and age had to give
up duck shouting. So when his wifc was about to cook his rump he
would put a tow nicks in the rump and put in a few pcllcts. \Vhile
hc was catlnr his rump he would spit out the pallets and say to hls
wife, i t is spitting out the pellets when eating ducks that I miss the
most. Talking about ducks there was this fellow who had this pet
duck and tooi it everywhere. So this night he w;~.; buying a ticket
to go in to the movies, when the lady who sells the tickets snid
'what is that". The bloke smd 'It's a duck", so thc lady said "no
ducks in our picture show". The fellow went outside and dropped
the duck dawn his Dants then came back in. hroueht a ticket and
into the pict&es and sat down next td two gdies. As it was

of it. The first lady said - I eanr help it, the dam thlng is eating my
popcorn.
When I write up our own shoot I try to write i t up as soon a s possible as I have to get it away early Monday to make the deadline.
So I leave some news till the next copy. I think we have the fairest
Cluh in Australia. Like if you go up a grade we let them win the
rafle: Ken Vicary went back to A Grade and we let him win the 112
case Ammo Rafle, and Vince Dollisson went to A Grade and we let
him win the Fruit Raffle. Believe i t or not. I was in the carpark
when chis lmprussive mini bus camc up the track I thought thcrc
would be 20 snoorers, bur it was the Rirzini bus with Roben (C. Hill
Nion and shuotinrr mate Bill McKcchnlr. Welcome and thanks for
coming and I thiik Robert will be hack it if hadn't been for Emma
in thc Cont. Roben would hnvc t;rkan the lot. I think w c will see
more of the Rizzim bus if Robert has his way. Welcome anytime.
A call from Irvine Wynyard who I asked to let me know how he
went in NZ. It seems the weather was the winner a s i t heat a lot
of shooters. The only plus Irvine had was that he made the NZ
Team. He shot 50150 DIB, 43/50 SB & 1491150Pts, hut didn't carry
on with any. Irvine enjoyed his trip and like Peter came home with
a cold. He also shot 981100 in the Macintosh. thanks for the news
Irvine. Good shooting.

This is how i t happened. Vic bought his own seafood sandwiches
out for lunch and put them i n the Club fridge. Someone thought
they were in the fridge for sale and they were sold to the shooters.
So Vic took his revenge out on the targets and took out High Gun.
Good shooting VIC.

Harry told me he spends most of the shoot explaining my progress

Dear Sir,
I wish to respond to several letters in the April issue of the shooters journal, which were in my opinion partly playing the man but
not the ball.
I respect rhc right of any individual to have n different ap~munro
mine and to dcbntc it, but 1 au expcc: thnL indlwdunl to respect mv
right to express that view
I believe that as we live in a democratic and free enterprise system
which allows every individual freedom of choice to purchase any
brand of product which in their opinion is most suitable to their
requirements. In other words, we all make these choices when
buying items from supermarket shelves and every other purchase
we make in our daily lives both personally and in business.
In my article in the February issue, I outlined part of the criteria
that I apply when considering buying a clay target trap to be used
for competition.
That criteria is well known by members of my club and other
shooters that I have worked with and have been involved with in
the selection process of purchasing traps and I can assure readers
I have held that view for at least 12 years and I will not in the foreseeable future deviate from that position.
In closing please ask anyone who knows me well and I am sure
that they will tell you I will never be led anywhere by anyone to
swallow anybody's propaganda.
With respect

Last Sunday, the 16thApri1, the Sunshine Coast Clay Target Club
(SCCTC) held their monthly shoot. 26 Keen shooters participated
in very good shooting conditions with no wind to speak of and
cloud cover was generally not a problem, The number of shoot offs
required to decide positions in all events highlights this. We had
shooters travelling to the shoot from as far away as Gympie and
Dalby.

The main event for the day was event 4, 20 Pair Double Rise

the event outright even though he missed his last pair clean. A

event. Phil Grove and Pygmy McAndrew had to shoot another 10
pair before Pygmy picked up the AA Grade result.
To complete the day, a shoot off was required to decide the Overall

I t is with deep regret that the Tamworth Clay Target Club advises of

Although Bev was not a clay target shooter, she will be remembered by

I t was a very rare occasion t h a t Bev missed a club shoot and never
missed an open shoot to eater for the shooters.
It was timely t h a t she was awarded the club member of the year for
1999 along with husband Rod for their service to the Tamworth Club.
As a mark of respect, Tamworth club member formed a Guard of

Our deepest sympathy is extended to husband Rod and chlldren Craig

This was great company for Neville, who followed the men on their
rounds. This was the first experience of firearms and rabbit traps. His
father bought him a .22 pea riffle, and from this he learnt the correct
handling and safety of firearms, which he followed through his life and
the correct handling of rabbit traps as well. He wore out the barrel of
his first rifle, but with the packet money h e earned from rabbit skins
and carcasses, which h e sold at the freezing warks, h e bought another
barrel far his rifle.
The freezing works a t the time were situated on the bank of the Mole
River crossing. Neville's next purchase was a pushbike, which meant
he could deliver his carcasses and pelts himself.

In 1989 i t was time to retire, Neville would have preferred Darwin to
retire, because i t was never cold, but h e could n i t leave lbntertield
because of all his close friends and relatives. Retirement i s difficult for
a man from the land but Neville found a place for gathering more
knowledge or should we say passing advice on. As he strolled the
street, a seat in town became known to u s a s A Seat of knowledge,
where h e s a t and enioved his retirement.
At the local Rifle Club he introduced bench shooting, and this practice

He served the community as Justice of the Peace, and a s New South

He was a remarkable man, and sadly to say a lot of history h a s gone
with Neville, a s he could tell you who bought the first car, tractor,
washing machine and many more things that the young generation
take for granted in our fast living world today.
Poetry was a natural gift. He wrote many short poems for many occasions as same of u s will recall. The local paper, politics, shooting,
animals including his favorite pet Heidi, family weddings and many
more.
Neville leaves us with memories. Even when h e was so ill h e could
make the doctor and hospital staff smile.
Neville leaves his wife Joan, his children M m a y and Pam, 6 grand
children and 6 great grand children, who called him Trig.
There's a road I call remembrance,
Where I walk each day with you,
It's apleasnnt happy road.
All filled with memories true.
There are hills and fields and budding trees,
And stillness that's so sweet,
That it seems that this must be theplace,
Where Gad and humans meet.

Roma Clay Tav~etClub
At ihe recent Australia Day Awards, Rumn Clay Target Club was
nominated in both the Bungil Shire and thc Roma Town Council
for the "Community Event of the Year" Award.
This award was for the 1999 National Down the Line Championships held in March.
In the nominations it was stated Over 500 shooters and their families attended, with visitors from
all over Australia, and also two from England to compete.
This was the first time that a National competition was held i n a
rural area.
Shooters were amazed a t the high standard of facilities available,
with many remarking that these Nationals were the best they had
ever attended, and some have attended more than 20 Nationals.
With the Grounds in immaculate uondicion, 13 ident~calmachines
d three extra

craps for practice. Visitors came tu a n sir-conditioned clubhouse, a
large scaled car park, exuullcnt catering facilities supplying all
mcals and then to bc entertained a t n ~ g h tmany
,
shooters did nor
leave the b~oundsuntil aftrr 11 pm. With a separate administmtion area, also air-conditioned, a large well-equipped workshop for
the trap mechanics and a gunsmith as well.
Camping facilities were available a t a minimal cost, and those
requiring other accommodation, the club arranged that also.
Wich the benefit* to Roma, the event really put Roma and District
into National focus. Roma iscertainly known for it hospitality. Visitors were cen3inlv im~rcsscdwith the friendliness of business
people and the aveiage Eitizen. It was certainly a team effort, with
both councils providing invaluable assistance in setting up the
facilities, with local business houses as sponsors, many members
over the years working to get their club house and grounds ta a
vew hieh standard. With all the hard work done durine the championships, many took annual leave to do so, che cleaning and the
cooking starting or 4 am. All this work done on a voluntary b3sis.
In the planning stages, some critics felc chat a small rural town
like Roma would be unable to host such a 13rge national event.
Hawcvcr, rhc community really supported Romn Clay Target Club
and the event ufthu ycnr ran exvcptionally well in all arm.<,as the

CUZZO'S RAMBLiNGS JUNE 2000
The 2000 Trap Nationals. Not only the first Nationals of the new millennium, but also the first Trap Nationals conducted a t the new
National Shooting Ground. Personally, I thought i t was a great shoot.
The success of the Nationals is often gauged by the number of competitors and the yardstick is usually the Double Barrel. This year that
prestigious event had 527 entrants and even though shooting is under
attack from all quarters a t the moment, t h a t is still about 30 more
than the average aver the past 25 years since I started attending the
Nationals.
Also the weather was very kind to us. The first day of the Pre-Natianale was a little windy and an the last day of the Nationals, we got a few
light showers late in the afternoon. I n between we gat seven consecutive days of glorious autumn weather. I think that this run of good
weather is a reflection of two things. The first is the wisdom of staging
the event in autumn, which is probably the most stable time of the year
a s far as weather is concerned. And the second is the wisdom of selecting a site for the National Shooting Ground that is well inland and far
removed from the influence t h a t nearby weans can have an the
weather of coastal areas.
The only venue now used for the World Skeet Shooting Championships
is San Antonio, which is situated in south central Tkxas, well away
from any weather effects generated by the Gulf of Mexico. I have shot
the nine days of the World Shoot there on eight separate occasians, and
can count on the fingers of one hand the number af days t h a t were cold
or rainy or even had strong wind. My memories of San Antonio in
October, which is the middle of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.
are of calm warm sunny days going on seemingly forever.
However, prior to anchoring the World Shoot a t the National Gun Club
in San Antonio, the event used to circulate around the North American
continent on a rotational basis, in much the same way as our Nationals used to. By the time I started attending, the number of entrants
had become so large t h a t the only other venue capable of hosting the
Shoot was Savannah in Georgia. Unfortunately Savannah is situated
on the coast and bears the full effect of the unstable weather influenced by the proximity of the North Atlantic ocean.
I only shut the \Varld Shoot ~n Savannah threc times, but I still have
viwd mcrnoncs ofevery conceivable weather condition from oppressive
heat 2nd humidltr which brousht uut the and flcas in droves. t o
windv rainv days so cold the
referees swore they would never
return. I reinenyber lightning storms so severe they stopped the Shoot
on several occasions. And I remember sheltering in a vendors building
one afternoon, watching people shoot in rain t h a t was not only coming
down almost horizontally, due to the strength of the wind behind it, but
was also so heavy that you could barely see 100 yards in it. I was very
grateful to have shot a t 9.00am t h a t morning, before the h n t came
through. Although I won the first of my World Skeet Championships in
Savannah, my fondest World Shoot memories are definitely of San
Antonio.
Back to the Trap Nationals! I guess every Nationals has a t least one

weeks before. Now Billy and I are actually a lot closer than most people
realise. We often room together on trips away and whenever there is a
big shoot a t Metro, I always enjoy Bill and Michele's hospitality. I'm
also very proud to have Bill's name alongside mine a couple of times on
the National Two-man Team Trophy I've shot with some great partners over the "ears. but pound for pound. vau'd be hard pressed to find
a better team:shooting partner than ill..
Still somewhat puzzled, I questioned Bill a t length about his decision,
because i t certainly seemed a little premature. His shooting performances do not seem to have waned recently and I think it would be fair
to say that he is probably a t the peak of his career. I n his usual
straightforward manner, Bill gave me a couple of goad reasons t h a t I
could not argue with. Actually, upon reflection, I was able to relate to
them so closely that it has set me thinking about how far off my own
retirement should be. Anyway, every dark cloud has a silver lining. Bill
has assured me that although you probably won't see him a t any of the
larger Trapshoats from now on, he still intends to support his local
dub, do some mare coaching, and to shoat some Sporting and maybe
even a little more Skeet.
Another very newsworthy item was not just the fact that Glenn Castal~

laro wan the National High Gun, but the magnificence of the score he
shot to win it. Seven points down out of 475 over six events is a great
effort and I was t d y impressed. In fact it ties the highest score ever
shot over the current format. And when was that record of 4681415 set?
Back in 1984by none other than W J Iles. So what happened to the big
feller with the pictures an him this year? Well you don't have to look
back very far to find him. After six days of shooting, Glenn only
managed to beat Billy by a single solitary paint. And to further emphasise the magnitude of the performance put up by bath Glenn and Billy,
you have to count back a further six points before you come to Arthur
Turner on 461 in third place. Bill, are you absolutely sure you're not
quitting too soon?
Clay targets and the machines t h a t throw them have been a t the forefmnt of most shooting discussions for the past couple of years and this
Nationals was no exception. At various times I heard all sorts of
reports, bath good and bad, on each of those items. This year we used
Gemini machines throwing orange Corsivia targets, and to be perfectly
honest, I thought they both did quite a serviceable job. By now I think
everyone involved knows my thoughts on clay targets. I firmly believe
that Trench targets should be used for shooting Trench and that a
much softer, purpose-built, American style target should be used for
l t a p and Skeet. However, if you must try and use one target for both
applications, then the orange Corsivias seem to be a s good as any. It's
just a pity t h a t a fair percentage of the batch supplied for the Natiooals were badly buckled, which caused a fair bit of heartache for all eaneerned and developed into a n ongoing difference of opinion as to just
exactly how, when and where they got buckled. I'll be interested in the
outcome of that one!
As for target throwing machines, there has probably never been more
debate on this subject than a t the present. And i t seems t h a t a lot of
my recent editorial comment on the subject has been misunderstood. A
lot ofpeople have asked me what have I got against Ludwig Kohler and
his machines and why have I been giving him such a bagging. The
plain truth is absolutely nothing. In fact just the opposite. I have
simply been trying to bring to the surface a lot of undercurrent t h a t
has existed and get some constructive debate going in order to examine
and clarify the situation. In the April issue I netually pulled the rug out
from under a couple of the nagging doubts I had personally had about
the machines, and tried to debunk several other derogatory theories
while I was a t it.
To bring the matter intocrystal clear perspective, I am happy to admit
to being one of Ludwig's customers. Last year my Gun Club authorised
me to select and purchase a new DTL trap. After careful consideration,
I decided t h a t the Gemini was not only of excellent design and quality,
but also offered the widest available array of features, making it
arguably the best value far money on the market. With that in mind,
we purchased and installed one in our main layout. We have been so
happy with i t that we have another one on order and intend to take
delivery of i t a s soon as our finances allow.
This year's AGM was a fairly tame and Friendly affair, especially when
compared to some ofthe more turbulent ones of recent years. The mast
reassuring thing to come out of i t was the fact that mast people have
come to accept that the National Ground a t Wagga was not only
inevitable. but also a ~ a s i t i v se t e for
~ the future of our svort. However.
what surprised me th'e most was'when the maiority of people who had
previously been against the Wagga complex, "oted ov&helmingly to
overturn the current proposal of staging the Nationals elsewhere every
third year. Almost everyone in attendance a t the AGM voted to keep
the Nationals there for a t least the next five years, in order to allow the
e o m ~ l e xto develoo. and I would now be surorised if this .oravosal
. is not
ratiked shortly b i the full executive.
I thought the trade displays this year were great, even in temporary
marquis. However, another of the great advantages of having a
National Shooting Ground is the commercial viability of permanent
vendors buildings, just like they have a t the Grand American Trapshoot and the World Skeetshoat. Wait till you see those - rainproof,
windproof, dustproof and even carpeted floors - ton good. And speaking
of the trade people, I thaught Kevin Wright and Ian McGeoch did their
usual super job this year. It's great not only to have instant on-site
repairs in case you have a problem, but also to get those other routine
iabs done without the hassle and time loss of ahipdns.

Vale: The only dark cloud during a n otherwise bright week a t the

attended from all over the State and those who tried ISSF far the
first time went home happy with trophies i n hand. Congratulations to our novice "Trenehies and Skeeties".
This year though, the Carnival took on some new events, which
weren't "true" ISSF authorised events, being a Double Barrel
Points and Handicap. These new events were the ideas of two Club
Members - John Bigg and Alan Sexton and having heen already
tested and tried, were put into the Carnival far variation. The
Double Barrel Points operated exactly the same scaring system a s
the DTL Discipline, where else the Handicap operated on your
average scares of the first event shot (for novices only) or using the
chance of taking out the higher placed trophies a s a person would
need to shoot perfect scores to win. This event leveled out all ofthe
competitors, with novices having the opportunity to win "first
place".

The following competitors Brett Hall, Craig Bentley and Ross
Walsh in double trap. Nathan Cassells, Dexter Barnes and
Nathan McDonnell i n trap ventured to the Sub continent to
compete i n the first World Cup of the New Millieum.
Nathan McDonnell drew squad 1 no1 position so he feels he is

We arrived i n New Delhi via various destinations i.e. Brett Hall

Singapore, the remainder via Sri Lanka. This was not without
hiccups due to our Team Manager having a hetter offer and pulling

What i s diabetes?
Diabetes presents in two forms. Type 1diabetes is genetic and
may occur at any age, although i t usually develops in childhood or adolescence and is the most common form of diabetes
diagnosed before the age of 30. Factors in the person's environment triggsr off the genes which cause the body to stop
making insulin, and daily injections are essential to stay alive.
Type 2 diabetes (also known as adult onset diabetes) represents 85 to 90 per cent of all diabetes cases. The symptoms are
not always obvious and often go unrecognised for long periods.
I t mostly affects people over the age of 50. Being overweight
often triggers diabetes in this age group.
Type 2 diabetes is caused when the body's cells are unable to
use glucose (the body's main fuel) because they are resistant to
insulin (which is needed to move glucose into the cells). To
compensate for excess glucose in the blood, the pancreas produces higher than normal levels of insulin. Eventually the
pancreas-becomes over worked and stops making enough

Food intake and exercise have a lot to do with controlling not
only body weight, hut also blood glucose levels. In order to
manage their condition successfully people with diabetes need
to have a good understanding of the foods they eat and how
their body uses energy.

o;erweight should mak; wGight loss ;major priority in controlling their condition. Of course, exercise is an important
part of efforts to lose weight.
To help control diabetes and provide adequate nutrition, food
should be high in carbohydrates, high in fibre, low in fat and
low in sugar. Carbohydrates should provide a t least half the
energy requirement - the main sources being plant foods such
as bread, cereals, rice, fruit and vegetables.
It is the carbohydrates which affect blood glucose levels
because they contain sugars and starches which are broken
down to glucose, which then enters the blood stream. I t is
glucose that provides the body's cells with the energy they
need to perform their particular tasks.
Regular exercise is equally important for people with diabetes
as i t helps the body's insulin work better.
With the help of the diabetes core team of health professionals
and regular medical check-ups and monitoring, people with
diabetes can work out the best times for exercise and food. For
example, i t might be more comfortable to eat a spread of carbohydrates 5 or 6 times throughout the day to keep blood
glucose levels stable, rather than the traditional three-meal-aday lifestyle.
Unlike Type 1diabetes, Type 2 diabetes can often be controlled
with diet and exercise alone. Some people may need medicine
- either oral medication or injected insulin - and many find
their diabetes improves when they follow their treatment
plan, which is aimed at keeping blood sugar levels as close to
normal as possible.

Type 2 diabetes develops gradually with symptoms often being
dismissed as insignificant or a sign of ageing. Many people
with Type 2 diabetes don't know they have it until it has developed to a serious, often life-threatening stage.

early warning signs of Type 2 diabetes and promote the
message that i t can be successfully controlled.
Diahetes Australia stresses - with early diagnosis, Type 2 diabetes can be successfully controlled. Recognising warning
signs and risk factors and having a simple test for diabetes are
the crucial steps in preventing long-term complications. Diet
and exercise programs, and in some cases medication, can
ensure people with Type 2 diabetes go on leading full and
active lives.
Are you at risk of Type 2 diabetes?
All Australians need to understand the risks that trigger diabetes and to recognise the warning signs, to help stem the
growing tide of this deadly condition.
To make it easier for people to recognise that they should he
tested for diabetes, specialists have determined the risk
factors and urge people to take the diabetes 'tick test'.
If one or more of these boxes has been ticked, a doctor should
be consulted and a test for Type 2 diabetes requested. Diabetes
Australia also stresses that people a t high risk of diabetes
should discuss diet and exercise changes with their doctor to
prevent Type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes:
* Represents approximately 85 to 90 per cent of all diabetes
* Is more frequently diagnosed in people who are overweight,
have high blood pressure and who have a family history of the
condition
