Bible Study & Christian Education
Welcome to our guests!
Children’s Ministries
December Faith Journey Shakes It Up! We’re doing something “different” for the month of
December! Instead of our usual class rotations, we’ll do three large group activities, beginning
with Happy Birthday, Jesus! on the 6th. Children in first through fifth grade will spend their
Sunday School hour in the Great Hall each week. Sure, we’ll have lots of fun...but we’ll also be
sending a very deliberate message that this time of waiting is incredibly special! We’re not
recruiting teachers, but we welcome any adult volunteer who can assist with our activities on
December 6, 13 & 20. Please let Catherine Anne know if you can help!
Casting has now begun for the 5:30 p.m. Christmas Eve Family service. If you or anyone in
your family would like to play a role in this special service, please email Catherine Anne
([email protected]) ASAP.
We are delighted you are worshipping with us! As a guest, you are invited to:
1. During the Words of Welcome, please print the requested information on the
Friendship Pad and pass the Friendship Pad down the pew.
2. After the worship service, please join Deacon Mary Kent, Elder Ted Guerrant, and
one of our Ministers in the Narthex. They will answer questions and provide a Guest
Packet.
3. The next New Member classes will be held Sunday, February 21 and February 28, in
the Session Room, #109 from 9:00-10:30 a.m. For more information please contact

Tell Us Our Story
In Preparation for Worship
“Give me, O my Lord, that purity of conscience which alone can receive your
inspirations. My ears are dull, so that I cannot hear your voice. My eyes are dim, so
that I cannot see the signs of your presence. You alone can quicken my hearing and
purge my sight, and cleanse and renew my heart. Teach me to sit at your feet and to
hear your word.

Our Father who are in heaven, hallowed by Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy

forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory,

Sermon
“Surprised by Hope”
*The Apostles’ Creed (in unison)
Bob Bullock
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of
the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;
He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended
into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from
thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.
Respond to God’s Word
Forgive us our sins, O Lord. Forgive us the sins of our youth and the sins of our
age, the sins of our soul and the sins of our body, our secret and our whispering
sins, our presumptuous and our careless sins, the sins we have done to please
ourselves, and the sins we have done to please others. Forgive us the sins that we
know, and the sins that we know not; forgive them, O Lord, forgive them all
because of your great goodness, mercy, and grace. Through Jesus Christ, our
Lord. Amen.

I Wonder As I Wander
Appalachian Carol
Chancel Choir ~ Wendy Moreland, solo
arr. John Rutter
I wonder as I wander out under the sky, how Jesus the Savior did come for to die. For
poor ornery people like you and like I: I wonder as I wander out under the sky. When
Mary birthed Jesus 'twas in a cow's stall, with wise men and farmers and shepherds
and all. But high from God's heaven a star's light did fall, and the promise of ages it
then did recall. If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing, a star in the sky, or a bird on
the wing, Or all of God's angels in heav'n for to sing, He surely could have it, 'cause
he was the King.
*Doxology
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the
beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

Service Notes
The word “advent” means the coming of promise. The season of Advent, a period of four
Sundays, mark the beginning of the Christian year. Traditionally the church has used the
season of Advent to anticipate Christ’s return. It is about looking forward to the ultimate
fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to liberate us and usher in a brand new heaven and earth.
Seasons of waiting and preparation are built into the church calendar to help us realize the
truth that much of the Christian life is about living in the tension of anticipation: Christ has
come, but we wait for Him to come again; we have been redeemed, but we long for
complete redemption; we live between what has already happened in the life, death,
resurrection and ascension of Jesus and what will happen when He returns. As a church
family and individually, during this Advent season, let us focus our hope to enable us to
live confidently – even though we live in the midst of this tension. Let us wait for birth.
Let us wait for new life. And this year, as we wait, let us anticipate the new things that
God will be birthing in us and through us in the lives of others.
