OVERVIEW
This course will focus on common and unusual problems of acutely ill and injured
children. The didactic lectures, interactive group discussions, panel discussions,
question and answer sessions, and workshops will prepare emergency physicians,
pediatricians, family physicians, pediatric nurse practitioners and nurses, and
emergency care professionals to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide variety of
pediatric emergencies.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Emergency physicians, pediatricians, family physicians, pediatric and family
practice residents, nurse practitioners, emergency nurses, physician assistants and
emergency care professionals.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of the conference, the participant should be able to:
• Manage the poisoned pediatric patient
• Evaluate and manage a febrile seizure
• Discuss the indications for and goals of sedation in pediatric emergency
procedures
• Appropriately evaluate the febrile infant for serious bacterial infections
• Recognize and appropriately manage meningitis, pneumonia and common surgical
emergencies in the ED
• Identify an appropriate evaluation and treatment strategy for children with head
injury of varying degrees of severity
• Detect the presenting signs and symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis
• Recognize and stabilize infants with congenital heart disease
• Recognize the symptoms of child abuse in the emergency setting
