Friends of Autistic People (FAP) is a 501(c) (3) organization with a mission to help
children with autism who have matured into adulthood. FAP was founded by Brita
Darany von Regensburg almost single handedly in 1997, against great odds, without
the customary help of an existing civic group or larger organization.
FAP’s mission is to raise awareness of the community that autism needs continue even after children age out of
school. After age 21 they are grown children but still have autism. They don’t just disappear. We have often heard
that FAP had put autism on the map in Connecticut and was the first organization to educate legislators at State
and National level about the needs of Children on the autism spectrum. FAP organized a series of legislative forum
meetings and lectures at Greenwich Library and Greenwich Hospital. FAP was also the first to bring internationally
known Dr. Temple Grandin, scholar and business woman with autism, to Greenwich in December of 2001 to hold a
standing room only lecture to a mesmerized audience at Greenwich Library.
Today, in addition to its awareness raising activities, FAP is working to realize an important vision to create The
Farm, a Village that will offer a living solution for adult children with autism. The first stage was to research and
visit other existing farms. The current phase is fundraising to buy land and build the farm. Sites are under
consideration in Easton – Newtown, close enough to serve the entire Fairfield County area and even beyond.
