student body, backed away
from its obligation as parents became more incensed and angry after
Sequoyah Principal Debi
Tipton and Director of
Schools Tim Blankenship
ordered Denham to stay
off school property with
his camera.
Unparalleled behind
the lens, Denham had
been a longtime and consistent presence at Sequoyah sporting events
and had official press credentials, but Tipton and
Blankenship barred him
for allegedly violating socalled school policy in taking pictures of the facility’s
athletes and students at
the requests of parents.
“Unfortunately we've
had to cut ties with the
school..but there are no
hard feelings on our end at
all,” Christian Blaicher of
Blaicher’s Photography
said in response on Friday.
“I don't think any of this
was intentional... I just
think the timing was bad,
you all have a great community and a great
school.”
Without Blaicher’s, the
school stands to lose at
least $10,000 in yearbook
and photo sales.
The school system is
also facing criticism for
possibly violating Denham’s federal right to free
speech and violation of

The legality of banning
an individual parent of a
Sequoyah student from
carrying a camera on campus is also being questioned.
Denham’s unique and
breathtaking photography
has brought him recognition and praise from students, athletes, parents,
and other photographers.
The banners of the
school’s athletes that have
appeared on the campus
had been part of his handiwork.
No other private, public, or parental photographers have been barred

McConkey then called
for a review of the previous meeting’s minutes.
This powwow was held on
September 24, 2015.
Mayor Yates made a motion to approve of the
minutes as read. Seconding the motion was both
Lacey Mason and Jennifer
Underwood. The measure
passed with all ayes.
Next up was the financial report for the month
of September 2015. Although the item would
not be listed until the October financial report,
Heather Rhymes wished
to announce she had been
granted a $100 check
from Legal Aid. This came
as a result of working
alongside them. Sharon
Byers then made a motion
to adopt the financial report as it stood. Underwood seconded the
motion, and it passed with
all ayes.
Patty Williford shared
the Director’s Report with
the Council. The report
touched on the Three Star
Programming. The staff
classes are going well, with
Zumba on Tuesdays and
Yoga on Thurdays. The
Council has finalized
products for the Coalition
Academy requirements,
and has started Began
Yoga for Cancer Recovery
at the Cora Veal Senior
Center. The report noted
this is an eight-week
course, supporting those
who are going through or
recovering from cancer
treatment.
The Kick Off Event for
RAM, stated Williford, is
set for December 3 at 6
p.m., and will take place at
the
First
United
Methodist Church in
Madisonville. Invitations
have been completed and
mailed off. The report revealed Crystal Russell had
developed a mailing list,
with over 300 professionals having been invited
thus far. Elected officials
and sponsors of the last
RAM have also been invited to the Kick Off
Event. Board members
will need to sign up for a
shift to serve.

set for October 31, said
Williford. She also announced the National
Drug Take Back Day was
a success. Local law enforcement incinerated the
drugs through the TBI
and Dangerous Drug Task
Force. The Health Council recently took participated in the Cool Kids
Health Fair as well. Members of the Council attended the Appalachian
Regional
Commission
Conference, and as a
whole the organization
took part in the Buzz Fest.
There were over twenty
entries in the Be Super
Healthy Wagon Parade.
The kids did an awesome
job, it was said.
The Health Council is
currently involved in the
organization of alcohol
compliance checks. It is
also overseeing Ollie the
Otter presentations, and
working with law enforcement on seat belt and
child seat safety compliance checks.
Williford then spoke
on the Cancer Fund. Two
people received cancer
funds in September, equaling $400 given out of the
Cancer Fund. She also
stated she had had to turn
away a few people this
past month. This was due
to these people having received aid from the Cancer Fund only a few
months before. One can
only draw from the Cancer Fund once a year.
Williford wished for the
board to know about this.
It has never happened before, she said, and she did
not want anyone to think
the Health Council does
not wish to help people. It
does, but once aid is received, the Fund requires
you must wait for a year
before receiving aid again.
TNCEP was represented by Lisa McMahan.
She announced the new
Discover My Plate program is merging with the
previous program, known
as Organ Wise Guys. This
will allow the continued
use of Organ Annie.
TNCEP also recently
took part in the Health
Fair, as well as the Walk-aThon at Tellico Plains Elementary School. Games
were set up at the latter
event. The group has participated in Tasty Days at
both Sweetwater Elementary School and Sweetwater Primary School, too.
The Eat Smart During
Pregnancy course has
started as well. Though
only one person took part
in the first meeting,
McMahan expressed the
hope the class would grow.
It now became time
for committee reports.
Crystal Russell spoke
for the Substance Abuse
and DFC Committee.
The SADD Clubs are
going strong, she reported.
A SADD Club was recently started at Sequoyah
High School. Recruitment
will begin in the first week
of November. Russell next
stated she is sill working
on the next round of
PRIDE Surveys and
parental permission letters. She hoped this would
be finished by the end of
November. Overall, she
thought there had been a
good return during the
first round of PRIDE Surveys. There was an average
of 50 percent response
from schools, a good sample size.
The Nutrition and Fitness Committee was represented by Lacey Mason
and Jennifer Understood.
Mason first spoke on
Coordinated
School
Health. CSH is half way
through its BMI screenings, reported Mason.
Monroe Motion is also
going great. CSH is hoping to find more grant

Williford then said the

that end, they agreed to
the partnership.
The next Health Council meeting was set for December 3 at 11:30 a.m.,

Williford again spoke
on the upcoming RAM
Dinner. It is set for December 3rd at the FUMC,
and will begin at 6 p.m.
She stated 400 invitations
have been issued. The
Sheriff’s Department will
be helping with the
spaghetti dinner, and child
care will be provided. The
agenda for the evening includes not only socializing
and a delicious supper, said
Williford, but also a documentary on Remote Area
Medical.
Williford encouraged
the Council members to
contact providers about
the event, and to put up
flyers advertising it as well.
RAM is not about competing businesses, she said.
And personal contacts
mean quite a lot.
The next RAM Committee meeting was set for
November 5 at 12 p.m.
The committee will meet
at the Health Council Office.
Williford then stated
she hoped the organization could hold a ZumbaThon in January.

Around The Globe
The “biggest hurricane
ever” fizzled on Saturday
and weakened to tropical
storm status after crashing
into Mexico at a Category
5 storm system, leaving behind flooded homes, raging rivers, and downed
trees, but far less damage
than initially predicted
and taking no lives in in
onslaught. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto
said there were no reports
of major damage though
many residents lost power
and running water.
Former British Prime
Minister Tony Blair said
on Friday the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq was partly
responsible for the emergence of the Islamic State
of Iraq and Syria in the
Middle East, but added
that the toppling of dictator Saddam Hussein was
“the right thing to do.”
Approximately 179 British
troops died in Iraq between 2003 and 2009.
According to U.S. Secretary John Kerry on Saturday, Israel and Jordan
had agreed on steps aimed
at reducing tensions at a
holy site in Jerusalem that
had fanned Israel-Palestinian tensions and violence.
Among the steps were
round-the-clock monitoring and Israel’s reaffirming
of Jordan’s special and historic role as custodian of
the site known as the
Temple Mount to the Jews
and the Haram al-Sharif to
Muslims.
Endorsing Pope Francis’ call for a “more merciful and less judgmental
church,” Catholic bishops
on Saturday urged the
church be more welcoming for cohabitating couples, gays, and divorced
Catholics who had civilly
remarried. Bishops from
around the world adopted
a document at the end of
a divisive three-week
synod on providing better
pastoral care for Catholic
families.
Unidentified attackers
hurled homemade bombs
at a crowd of thousands of
Shiite Muslims gathered
for a religious procession
in
the
capital
of
Bangladesh on Saturday,
killing one person and injuring more than 100 others
in
subsequent
explosions. Police said the
strike on the minority
group in the Sunni-dominated country was unprecedented
for
Bangladesh, arresting two
suspects and recovering
two unexploded bombs.
In Indonesia on Saturday, a fire that raced
through a packed karaoke
bar on the country’s Sulawesi Island killed 17 persons and hospitalized 71
others, most of which
were victims of smoke inhalation. No cause had
been determined on Sunday, but police said fire engines were late in arriving
and workers had been unable to quell the blaze with
fire extinguishers.
And India’s Defense
Ministry said on Saturday
the nation’s air force
would have its first female
fighter pilots by 2017, a decision that came because
Indian female pilots’ performances had been “on a
par” with males in flying
transport aircraft and
heavy-lift
helicopters.
Women would begin
training next year and
enter fighter cockpits
within the next year-anda-half. BUZZ Note: Females at present fly fighter
jets in several countries,
including the United
States, France, and Israel.
Flight: Not Always Right
Three Run, Three Caught
A trio of drivers from
Monroe County attempted to elude law enforcement officers in their
vehicles in three separate
incidents in the past ten
days, but the flights were
grounded in each case and
the drivers were arrested
and taken into custody.
In the first hightailing,
Madisonville Police Sergeant Daniel Dockery
charged Joshua Shauntele
McCleary, 28, of West
Street, Sweetwater with
reckless endangerment,
felony evading, revoked license fourth offense, and
other driving violations on
October 17, after McCleary sped from a traffic
stop and raced from Old
Cemetery Road onto Oak
Grove Road, hitting
speeds of 80-miles-perhour in the roadway’s 35mile-per-hour
zone.
Dockery caught up with
McCleary on Fagin Lane
when McCleary lost control of his Chevy Trail
Blazer and collided into an
embankment.
In the second split
from the scene, Sweetwater Police Patrol Officer
Adam Taylor charged
Christopher Shane Branham, 26, of SweetwaterVonore
Road
with
reckless driving, leaving
the scene of an accident
with damage, and reckless
endangerment, following a
hit-and-run on October
19.
County deputies
caught up with Branham
at the Philadelphia ramp
of Interstate 75 and held
him for Taylor.
And in the third hurtle
and hotfoot, Tellico Plains
Police Patrol Officer Dalton Rinehart charged
Brandon David Rymer, 23,
of Steer Creek Road with
felony evading, reckless
endangerment, reckless
driving, suspended driver’s
license, and other motor
offenses after an October
20 chase from the Tellico
Pride to Highway 69 to
Steer Creek Road, where
Rymer’s Toyota sedan hit
speeds of over 100 miles
per hour. On Steer Creek
Road, the speed on the
twisting narrow pavement
was in excess of 60 and
when Rymer stopped at
his home, he bailed from
the car and ran away on
foot.

Did you know that the
Teton Range of the Rocky
Mountains (49 miles long)
is (according to people
who keep these records)
the one attraction that can
literally take your breath
away? The range rests just
south of Yellowstone National Park and just west
of Jackson Hole.
Sitting east is the Owl
Creek Mountains. Now
this experience will make
you literally jump out of
your car and relieve your Iphone or Canon of its
memory card.
During the 200-mile
trip to Casper, you will see
boulders as big as a locomotive just sitting on the
prairie floor without a by
your leave. Thousands of
boulders just sitting on the
ground ripe for pickin.’
Fo u r- t h o u s a n d - f o o t
mountains that appear to
have buildings etched into
their faces.
Halfway through your
journey the mountains
change their colors to red,
purple, black, yellow, blue
and green. . Oops there
goes your memory card
again.
You ask how the Tetons
got their names. Well,
modernists say they got
them from the Teton Indian tribe. Actually, French
Trappers (first white-eyes
to see the pointed mountains) named them ‘Les
Trois Te’tons’ (look that
one up). Native Americans
named the range “The
Mother of the Earth,” another hint.
By the way, did you
know there is a “caldera”
in your back yard? Not exactly active, but a few
years ago (either 60 million or 10,000, according
to your belief or non-belief) a volcano erupted just
east of the Cherohala Skyway, leaving an almost perfect cone valley.
Check your Google
earth or a raised relief map
of the area.

Milder Weather,
Better Equipment
Less Income for FLEC
Greg Altum
The Board of Directors
of Fort Loudoun Electric
met for the utility’s
monthly meeting on
Thursday, learning that
milder weather in recent
months combined with
more efficient equipment
had resulted in less income
for the cooperative.
“Our net increase was
positive in September,”
said Chief Financial Officer Mike Webb. “However, the amount was still
$300,000 less than last
year. We had milder
weather this year and we
are getting and using more
efficient equipment.”
“We had one 100-degree day for 2015,” said
Chairman John Loope,
“compared to 19 last year.”
General Manager Jarrod Brackett said Fort
Loudoun Electric was still
hoping to get $1 million
from the Federal Emergency
Management
Agency for its help with
storm damage last winter.
FLEC’s power provider
TVA was facing the future
confidently, Brackett said,
even with more pollutant
guidelines from the Environmental
Protection
Agency. The entire TVA
seven-state region benefitted from $17.9 billion in investments this past year,
which helped create
76,000 new jobs, he said.
“TVA is testing a
ratepayer
complaint
process in Mississippi and
is also conducting a lessons
learned analysis,” said
Brackett.
Brackett provided an
update regarding the recent annual membership
meeting on October 3.
“I think we had a good
meeting,” he said. “Ultimately around 1,100 members showed up. The kids
were the key. We received
a thank you from the principal of Sequoyah High
School regarding the
event.”
Next year’s meeting will
be in Greenback, Brackett
said.
The board named directors to specific committees. And Brackett
reminded the board that

A drunk female driver
plowed into a crowd of
spectators during the
Oklahoma State University’s homecoming parade
in Stillwater on Saturday,
killing four persons and injuring 44 others, including
eight who were airlifted to
area hospitals in critical
condition. Police investigators said the woman,
Adacia Chambers, 25, was
arrested and charged with
driving under the influence. Vehicular homicide
charges were pending, officials said.
A powerful storm system rumbled through
Texas on Saturday, flooding roads and causing a
train derailment and sending residents scrambling
to find safe haven as remnants from Hurricane Patricia were forecast to
arrive. Cities and towns
went under flash flood
warnings in central and
south Texas after forecasters predicted eight to 12
inches of more rain.
According to HealthCare.gov and state-run insurance markets on
Sunday, Obamacare insurance costs are increasing
once again as a new signup season begins on November 1, the third season
for the so-called Affordable Health Care Act. Experts said premiums
would be increasing in
2016 and the tax penalty
for individuals remaining
uninsured was projected
to be high enough to cover
several weeks of groceries.
Speaking in Iowa on
Saturday, Democrat presidential contender Bernie
Sanders distanced himself
from Hillary Clinton, calling himself a “principled
progressive” and criticizing Clinton’s opposition to
the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Keystone XL
pipeline and her support
of the Iraq war. As president, Sanders said, he
would govern based on
“principle, not poll numbers.”
Meanwhile, a Friday-released Des Moines Register-Bloomberg poll had
Republican
Donald
Trump trailing Dr. Ben
Carson by nine percentage
points in the first-voting
state, after which Trump
described Carson as
“super low energy.” In
Miami, Trump said his decline was “a breaking
story” but when “we informed Ben, he was sleeping.”
In college football on
Saturday, it was another
wild weekend with Georgia Tech upsetting No. 9
Florida State 22-16 and undefeated No. 18 Memphis
roaring past Tulsa 66-42.
No. 5 undefeated LSU
beat Western Kentucky
48-20, No. 8 Alabama
downed Tennessee 19-14,
and No. 15 Texas A&M fell
to No. 24 Ole Miss 23-3.
And Florida’s statewide
bear hunt ended on Saturday with 207 bears killed,
99 of which were killed in
central Florida, 12 in north
Florida, 15 in south
Florida, and 81 in the panhandle. Wildlife officials
said additional hunting
would continue in parts of
the state and would end as
soon as 320 bears died, the
objective of which was to
“stabilize the growing
populations” of bears.
