SOUND OF VISION
MYRSKYN SILMÄ
ANDREW DEMIRIJAN (USA)
Myrskyn silmässä voi löytää rauhan.
Sound of Vision explores the dynamics of
audience perception as biofeedback from
viewers is used to create a live soundtrack
for silent films. EEG brainwaves of three
audience members are mapped to musical
notes so visitors to the H2Ö festival watch
a classic silent film while hearing the
brain activity of audience members as live
accompaniment.
Sound and video artist Andrew Demirjian
performs a live mapping and mix of the
participant’s brainwave data creating solos,
duet and trio combinations of their visual
reception. The piece experiments with the
traditional film conventions by combining
fiction visuals with non-fiction audio while
adding the role of audience reception to
the viewing/listening experience.

EYE OF THE STORM
It is possible to find peace in the eye of the
storm.
The boathouse installation uses washed
up materials to build an interpretation of
the internal and the external world. It is a
collaboration of four makers of different
artforms.

Laser tagging is writing with light on the
wall. The basic idea is to take a projector,
point a camera that is connected to the
computer on the image and start the custom software to track a laser pointer and
start drawing.

AQUASYNTH
Aquasynth is an electronic music instrument where the human body and the endless sea become parts of the circuit. How
does it work? Electronic sound signals are
fed into water bottles that let a constant
stream of water out. When you put your
hand under the streams while standing
in the sea with your bare feet, your body
conducts the sound signals into the sea.
The sea is connected to an amplifier that
outputs the sound for your listening
enjoyment.

Galleria Jäniksen syvänmerentutkimusryhmä on pulikoinut Ahdin takapihalle,
Neptunuksen hoviin ja Poseidonin
simpukkagrillille. Suurista syvyyksistä
atraimiin on tarttunut suomuisia krotteja,
levän peittämiä legendoja ja vajonneiden
kultadublonien kimallusta.

The Galleria Jänis deep-sea exploration
team have paddled into Ahti’s backyard,
Neptune’s court and Poseidon’s clam grill.
From the great murkiness tridents have
plucked scaly frogfish, seaweed draped
legends and the glimmer of submerged
doubloons.
These briny delights are swept from the
wave tops and served to the visitors of
H2ö by Maja Breife, Kaarina Haka, Vesa
Hjort, Simo Ruotsalainen ja Hans-Peter
Schütt.

SPACE BLIMP
THOMAS WESTPHAL (GER/FIN) /

Space Blimp is an aviated kinetic video
object.
Zeppelin works as projection surface for
selected video material. Several lightweight LED beamers will circle around the
Blimp/Airship. The video material shows
animals that have been used in aeronautic
exploration served to test the survivability
of spaceflight. The footage includes mon-

WIND HARP
The Wind Harp, built by French musician
Ifik Le Moigne turns the sea breeze into
music so that it becomes a part of the
soundscape of the festival. Le Moigne,
who draws inspiration from harmonic
music, will accompany the harp with a
didgeridoo.

BIGGER THAN TEXAS
Milja-Liina Moilanen (s.1989) on turkulainen kuvataiteilija joka opiskelee ensimmäistä vuottaan Kuvataideakatemiassa.
Moilasen töitä on ollut esillä kotimaisten
näyttelyiden lisäksi myös Australiassa,
Puolassa ja Senegalissa.
H2Ö:hön Moilanen tuo sarjan veistoksia,
jotka sivuavat ihmisen vaikutusta mereen. Bigger than Texas on teossarja, jossa
keinotekoinen aalto ja ihmisryhmä ovat
vaihtaneet paikkoja. Teoksen nimi juontuu
sanonnasta, jonka mukaan Tyynellämerellä
seilaava jätelautta on kooltaan suurempi
kuin Texasin osavaltio.
Milja-Liina Moilanen (1989) is visual
artist from Turku. Currently, she is studying at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts
in Helsinki. Along with the exhibitions in
Finland her art has also been presented in
Australia, Poland and Senegal.

Moilanen´s sculptures analyse human
interaction with the ocean. Bigger than
Texas is a series of works in which the
ocean and a group of people have switched
places. The titel originates from the saying
suggesting the Great Pacific garbage patch
is bigger than Texas.

A garden is a space set aside for the
display, cultivation, and enjoyment of
different forms of nature. The garden can
incorporate both natural and man-made
materials.
Marila and Oksanen are Turku based
artists working with various mediums and
methods.
BOYS SPRAY PAINT
Boys are being boys even if they are already grown up men. In the past 14 years
these boys have spray painted all kinds of
stuff. This time they are painting at H2Ö
festival. Come and be amazed...

Breathing is a pneumatic sculpture. It connects two separate forms in circulation.
These parts are made out of transparent
plastic and cross-connected to each other
with two vacuum cleaners. When one
form gets filled with air the other one gets
empty.

Pojat on poikia vaikka olisivatkin jo aikuisia miehiä. Nämä pojat ovat spreijanneet
viimeisen 14 vuoden aikana vaikka mitä ja
vaikka missä. Tällä kertaa he maalaavat

B²Ö
B-gallerian työryhmän toteuttamissa, ympäri festivaalialuetta ripotelluissa teoksissa
rantaan ajautuneet hylyt ja aarteet joutuvat
odottamattomiin paikkoihin ja näyttävät
meren tuomat mahdollisuudet uudessa
valossa. Toisaalla unimaailma ja todellisuus sekoittuvat kaleidoskooppimaisten
häivähdysten peilatessa ja muokatessa
ympäröivää todellisuutta. Heijastusten katveesta voi löytää myös merikarttoja, jotka
ohjaavat yleisön kohti festivaalinautintoa
ja ainutkertaisia H2Ö-elämyksiä.
Työryhmä koostuu turkulaisista ja tamperelaisista kuvataiteilijoista ja taideopiskelijoista ja sen koordinaattorina on toiminut
Milja Liina Moilanen. Muut työryhmän
jäsenet ovat: Sami Aho, Laura Ahvonen,
Sonja Elenius, Veera Järveläinen,
Anniina Mäki, Saara Kolehmainen,
Kalle-Erik Kosonen, Henna Nerg ,
Miina Pohjolainen, Okko Pöyliö, Jaana

The pieces by the B-gallery artistic team
are sprinkled all around the festival area.
Stranded shipwrecks and other treasures
that can be found in unexpected places,
tell fresh stories from the sea. Elsewhere,
dreamland and reality intermingle as
kaleidoscope-like shades reflect and shape
the surrounding reality. Among the reflections, there are charts leading the festival
audience towards enjoyment and unique
festival experience by the sea.
The decoration team consists of artists and
art students from Turku and Tampere and
is coordinated by Milja Liina Moilanen,
other members being Laura Ahvonen,
Sonja Elenius, Veera Järveläinen,
Anniina Mäki, Saara Kolehmainen,
Kalle-Erik Kosonen,
Henna Nerg , Miina Pohjolainen,
Okko Pöyliö, Jaana Saarikoski, Anni
Saijonkivi and Maria West.

KALAJUTTU
Lähdimme katsastamaan kalaverkot kuten
meillä sunnuntaisin oli tapana. Vesille
pääs-tyämme ilman valtasi outo käry.
Siinä samassa tulimureena äkkäsi meidät
ja poltti
veneemme poroksi, jolloin jouduimme eväskoreinemme veden varaan.
Koettelemukset eivät suinkaan loppuneet
siihen, vaan seuraavaksi paikalle lipuivat
kaksi uutta merten pikkupaskiaista. Ensin
kurkunsahaaja järsi Lauran eväskoria
kannattelevan käden poikki, minkä jälkeen
läskipallokala hotkaisi eväsleipämme viimeistä murua myöten. Kyllä harmitti. Eikä
siinäkään vielä kaikki; vaaniva tiikerihai
uiskenteli Lauran kädestä vuotavan verivanan perään, ja sitten olikin aika tehdä
nopeita päätöksiä. Maikki pelasti tilanteen
nöyryyttämällä tiikerihain tiehensä solvaamalla sen liian leveitä raitoja. Olimme
pelastuneet täpärästi. Uimme vielä takaisin
kotirantaan, kokonaiset 375 kilometriä,
minkä jäl-keen meidän kelpasi juoda kuu-
to check on the fishing nets. When we got
on the boat, there was a weird smell in
the air. Fire Moray noticed us, it burned
down our boat and we went overboard
with our picnic baskets in hand. Sadly
our misfortune didn’t end there, straight
after tha, two little sea bastards floated
to the surface. At first a cucumber sawer
gnawed Laura’s hand which was holding
the picnic basket and then a fat blowfish
gobbled our sandwiches down to the last
crumble. Which wasn’t too nice, nor the
end of this tragedy. A stalking tiger shark
quickly followed the bloodstream flowing
from Laura’s arm and now it was time to
make some quick decisions. Maikki saved
the day by humiliating the tiger shark, she
dissed its stripes that were inappropriately
wide. We narrowly escaped the situation.
Then we swam 375 kilometres all the way
back to the shore. Here it was so pleasing
to enjoy a nice cup of hot chocolate, feeling exhausted, relieved and happy.
Laura Lehtinen makes illustrations, murals
and staging. Maikki Pekkala designs and
prepares special props.

juhannusyönä nousevaan usvaan, tarrautuneet syysyönä väkivaltaisesti puhaltavaan
tuuleen ja laskeutuneet hallayön jälkeen
pelloille muodostuvaan huurteeseen.
Mustekehriä on helppo katsoa, mutta
vaikea ymmärtää.

INKTANGLE
(Atramentum macula virginia)
Inktangles are contrast marks in nature,
made by three different species of females.
It is as if wildlife weaved a texture from
itself, disclosing hidden parts of nature
to all senses like a biological x-ray. If you
are observant, you may find inktangles
everywhere. They are reflected in the mist
of the Midsummer’s night, they hold on
to the violent autumn winds and descent
in the frost of the wintry fields. It is not
hard to look at inktangles, but it is hard to
understand them.
The artists are: Kirsi Alaniva, Veera
Lehtola and Miia Outinen.

BARBEQUE STEAM GENERATOR
Mustekehrät ovat kolmen eri naaraslajin
jättämiä kontrastisia merkkejä luonnossa.
Ne ovat luonnon itsestään esiin kehräämää
tekstuuria, eräänlainen biologinen röntgenkuva, jonka tarkoituksena on tehdä
piilevää luontoa aistein havaittavaksi.

FISH TALE
Like every Sunday, we were about to leave
Barbecue Steam Generator will create
electricity by the power of steam. This
steam engine will be powered by placing
a small boiler over a barbecue stove. The
electricity created will run electronics and
lights. Mark Andreas will operate the
system on Friday and Saturday.

ja pyrkii tuottamaan jokaiselle osallistujalle onnistumisen tunteen.

BUZZLE PAINTING WORKSHOP
Buzzle painting workshop is a collective
way to make art and easily feel successful
about it. The outcome is a large painting
consisting of several smaller pieces in
which the imprint
of all the artists can be seen.

RUNOKOPPI
Mustekehrä tuo festivaalille kuusi runoilijaa, jotka esiintyvät kahdenkeskisessä
tilassa. Runokopin verhon takana esiintyvä
runoilija lukee tekstejään yhden hengen
yleisölle jukeboxin tapaan, muutaman
runon kerrallaan. Runokoppi on intiimi
taidetapahtuma, kahdenvälinen ja auditiivinen: kumpikaan osapuoli ei näe toista.
Runokoppi on esiintymislava, mutta tarjoaa myös mahdollisuuden vastavuoroisuuteen, sillä verhon takana oleva kuulija
voi halutessaan puhua, kertoa suhteestaa
runoon tai vastata omalla runollaan.
POEM BOX
Inktangle brings six poets who perform in shared space with a participant.
Performing poet reads his or hers poets
to an audience of one person one poem
at a time like a jukebox. Poem box is an
intimate art event dyadic and auditive:
neighter of the participants see each other.
Poem box is a stage, but it offers also a
possibility for interplay for the listener can
also speak if he or she wills and tell about
his or hers relationship towards the poem
or answer by performing an own poem.
HERE AND NOW
Anu Halmesmaa wraps white weft rags
into delicate web that both covers and
highlights the objects it is attached to.
HERE and NOW encapsulates a vessel that
lies about in the middle of the dockyard as
if it was hanging from a rusty crane. The
piece gives its viewer a breathing space –
here and now.

Anu Halmesmaan käsissä valkoinen matonkude kietoutuu herkäksi seitiksi. Teos
sekä peittää että tuo esiin kohteen, johon
kude on kiinnittynyt. TÄSSÄ ja NYT
koteloi telakan pihamaalla lojuvan aluksen
siten, että se näyttää roikkuvan vanhasta
satamanosturista. Teos tarjoaa katsojalleen
hengähdystauon – tässä ja nyt.
X Y Z W gives us visualization of time,
reflecting light endlessly through all three
dimensions.

HAMA BEAD WORKSHOP
Wind bubbler is an automatic soap bubble
machine that requires only adding of
water.
As machines do, it automates a simple act:
play. The upkeep of resources keeps the
machine running without pausing as long
as the circumstances will allow it.
At the Hama Bead Workshop you can put
together a pixel-art version of your favorite
artist.

We cannot see time. X Y Z W gives us
some insight of how time can be visualised
in 3D space – it’s a cube, or to be more
precise it’s visualization of a hypercube, a
tesseract.
JACK BALANCE (FIN)
X Y Z W refers to fourth dimension.
In mathematics fourth dimension is an
abstract concept. It’s led from threedimensional Euclidean space: length, width and
height. Fourth dimension is Time.
It is easy: just arrange the pixels on a sheet,
iron, and ta-dah: you have a (bathable
picture) or a weatherproof garden gnome!

Kuuma Ankanpoikanen jatkaa suosittua
naamioimprovisatoorista kesäviihdesarjaansa!
Edellisvuosien gorillapoliisit, kekkosvauvat
ja fennoamericanturistit saavat arvoisensa
jälkeläiset vuoden 2014 rientoihin, kun
heinäkuun alussa syntyvät upouudet
kesäiset kokopuvut. Tällä kertaa ne ovat
rumia, ja ne ovat eläimiä. Ja tottahan toki
siili, lammas, sika, pulu ja majava käyvät
festivaaleilla (kuuntelematta musiikkia),
tapahtumissa (tutustumatta tarjontaan),
mutta tämän kesän uutuutena: ne myös
ajavat autoa! Jumantsukka! Nyt on kesä!

Dirty Duckling is having their tradional
summer “holiday” – sweating for hours in
big bodies and masks.
This year you can recognize them hanging
around with a group of (ugly) hairy (animal) friends. But that’s not all. They will
also drive a car! Oh my God! It’s so crazy!

Joskus on semmone olo että joku kattoo
sua. H2Ö:ssä voit olla varma, ettei se ole
pelkkä tunne, se on joku. Se on 1SILMÄ.
Jos huomaat hänet niin hän voi pelästyy,
mut voi hyvin olla että 1SILMÄ kiinnostuu susta ja haluaa kulkea vähän matkaa
mukana. Varoitan silti että jos hän yrittää
diilata sulta yhden silmän niin parempi on
kieltäytyä. Joskus voi käydä niinkin, että
1SILMÄ tykästyy suhun niin kovasti että
hän rupeaa unelmoimaan ja tanssimaan.

Have you ever had a sensation of being
watched? Well, now you can be sure it’s
not just a sensation, it is somebody. It is
the 1EYED, standing there and gazing
at you! He might run away if you gaze
back, but he might as well follow you for a
while. Recommendation: if he tries to deal
a spare eye from you, you better refuse,
ok!? The 1EYED might even start dancing
or get dreamy when seeing you. A harmless phenomenon.
