At least 60 feet from scoreline to back fence
130 Feet
Center Gate or Back of Arena if Side Gate
For the minimum stopping room: If right barrel is at 0’, center of gate is 130’ and left barrel is 260’ then it’s 62 feet from
scoreline to a straight back fence. When possible allow more stopping room, just make sure that it’s the same distance
from center of gate to both the right and left barrels, then measure from eye straight back to fence to determine distance.
Use 300-foot tape to mark the pattern. Measure a triangle
with the sides equal distance from barrels 1 to 3 and barrels 2 to 3
(105 feet in a standard pattern). It’s 90-feet from barrel 1 to barrel
2 in a standard pattern. Make sure the 3rd barrel is at least 25 feet
off the back fence and the 1st and 2nd barrels at least 18 feet off
side fences (barrels 1 and 2 may be different distances off the side
fences, depending on how the arena is set up).
Before setting barrel stakes, use a second 300-foot tape to
V the 1st and 2nd barrels with the center of the gate if running
from the gate (if there is a side gate V the 1st and 2nd barrels from
the center of the pattern off the back fence). Shift the barrel pattern accordingly. See calculations above to ensure at least 60 feet of
stopping room—measure from eye straight to back fence to verify
calculations. All this is done to ensure that a rider going either right
or left has the same advantage.
Use the second tape to box the eyes. Measure from 1st barrel to 2nd barrel, to the left eye marker, to the right eye marker,
and back to 1st barrel forming a box. The distance between the
barrels and their respective eyes should be the same (example:
if it’s 60 feet from barrel 1 to the eye it should be 60 feet from
barrel 2 to the eye). Then measure the diagonal from barrel 2
to the opposite electric eye and barrel 1 to the opposite electric
eye. These diagonals must be the same. Diagonals are figured
by using the following equation: A×A+B×B=√C [electric eye
to the 1st barrel (A), 1st barrel to 2nd barrel (B), diagonal from
eye to 1st barrel and eye to 2nd barrel (C)]. For a standard pattern
with a 60-foot score line here’s the equation: 60×60 (a) + 90×90
(b) [3600+8100] = √11700 108 ft. 2 in. (c). For a pattern with
a 45-foot score line here’s the equation: 45×45 (a) + 90×90 (b)
[2025+8100] = √10125 100 ft. 7.5 in. (c)
