AAFC Aerospace Challenge
7.
Selection for the first AAFC Aerospace Challenge has been carried out with applications
and a week long selection program at RAAF Amberley. This camp was conducted during April
school holidays with 20 cadets who were selected from 138 applicants. These 20 successful
applicants spent a week participating in a program designed to expose cadets to aviation and
engineering programs of both RAAF and Civilian aviation industry. These cadets were also
required to participate in developing a UAV program and presentation as part of the selection
program. 3 Cadets from this selection program will go onto participate in an International
Aerospace Challenge in UK in June.

Congratulations go to 6 cadets from 3WG selected to attend RAAF Amberley and
participate in this new AAFC engineering program.

Adventure Training Award
10.
Congratulations to the following 3WG cadets who have successfully completed the
Adventure Training Award(ATA). These cadets were presented their ATA badge on parade by
Deputy Chief of Army, Major General Angus Campbell:

Bravery Commendation
11.
Congratulations to CSGT Ashleigh Flanagan on receiving award Commendation For Brave Conduct.
The following provides details of this award:

"On 25 November 2010, Miss Flanagan was at Wairo Beach when she saw a
distressed girl further along the beach. Miss Flanagan and a school friend spoke to
the girl who said three members of her family were in trouble. Miss Flanagan and
her friend immediately entered the rough water and paddled towards the panicking
family. When they reached the family she attempted to calm them as she helped
them onto a foam board. Miss Flanagan, along with others, assisted the family to
paddle out of the rip and back to the shore.
ii.
For her actions, Miss Flanagan is commended for brave conduct"
First Aid Certificate Renewals
12.
All staff completing first aid refresher courses are to ensure that they are completing the required
course IAW AAP 5110.001 Part 2 Chapter 2, Paragraph 11.
a.
“First Aid certificate. Applicants must have attained, and continue to maintain for the
duration of their AAFC service, an approved Statement of Attainment for HLTFA301B – Apply
b.
Basic First Aid (Senior First Aid Certificate).” The only First Aid qualification accepted by the
AAFC is HLTFA301B and HLTFA301C.
c.
The following qualifications do not meet the minimum standard for the AAFC: HLTFA301A.
13.
Enquiries regarding FA qualifications including RPL can be made to PLTOFF(AAFC)
Sharon O’Donnell, 3WGHQ Training.
WSA Training.
14.
Commanding Officers/Flight Commanders are reminded of their requirement to have
completed the WHS training of all staff and cadets. This was to be finished March 2012. If details

have not yet been forwarded to HQ they need to be now. Names of those who have been trained are
to be forwarded to PLTOFF(AAFC) Sharon O'Donnell for notation on their personal record.
Wearing of Uniform at HQ.
15.
It has always been a requirement that all members either parading or attending HQ are to
wear uniform. On occasions where it may not be possible to attend in uniform, neat and
businesslike civilian attire is to be worn. This is to be by exception only. Members parading
regularly at HQ who travel directly from work should bring their uniform with them, and change on
arrival at HQ.
a.
Type of Uniform to be worn at HQ. Reference is made to recent CAF directive on
Uniform matters dated 01 Aug 11, which states:
i.
“Dress in the Workplace. DPCU will remain the normal working dress for
most Air Force personnel, where arduous or outdoor duties are involved, or where it
is mandated in Joint Service establishments. Additionally, aircrew may wear flying
clothing in operational units or at a command headquarters. However, outside these
types of working environments, COs/Directors should encourage the wearing of the
SD uniform as normal working dress to promote a clear Air Force identity.”
b.
As a result of the above, Members working at Wing and Squadrons HQ are
requested to parade in SD (or TD) as a first preference.
Members Parading at HQ and Appropriate Compliments
16.
It is reminded that ALL members parading at HQ are to pay compliments to the OC on
arrival and departure. On arrival, members are to not to remove head-dress, until after such
compliments are paid. It is acceptable for this to be not done if the OC cannot be located or is in
closed conference. If they have not paid such compliments on arrival, upon sighting the OC for the
first time should sit fast or offer an appropriate greeting instead.
Name Badges
17.
Members are reminded that the approved name badge for AAFC personnel is the gold
coloured badge with AAFC (or unit) crest. AAFC members are not permitted to wear the RAAF
pattern silver name badge under any circumstances. RAAF members who are also AAFC members
are not permitted to wear their RAAF name badges on AAFC uniform. Members are also no longer
to wear the old RAAF/AIRTC pattern silver name badge with the surname only in blue writing.
AAFCUI refers.
18.
Whilst AAFC name badges are not compulsory, and are required to be purchased, members
are to be encouraged to purchase and wear a name badge.
Garrison Caps
19.
It is also reiterated that no cadet of any rank is to wear a garrison cap. This is a directive
from the RAAF. COs are not to allow senior cadets to flaunt this directive at local units under any
circumstances. AAFCUI refers.

AAFC Access Cards
20.
The AAFC Access Card is to be worn at all times by all AAFC personnel whilst on ADF
establishments in the following manner;
a. Tunic/Utility Jacket – worn with lanyard or fastened to the left breast pocket;
b. Sweaters/Cardigans – worn with lanyard or fastened to the left epaulette;
c. Shirts/Dresses – worn with lanyard or fastened to the left breast pocket;
d. May be worn clipped to the trouser belt on the right side when wearing SD uniform.
e. The Access card may only to be fastened to the epaulette when wearing the jumper or

Medal ribbons
21.
Medal ribbons are not to be covered in plastic or any other transparent material.

Badges not to be worn with AAFC Uniform:
22.
Members are reminded that is a RAAF directive that the following ADF badges are NOT to
be worn with AAFC Uniform (AAFCUI Refers).

Wearing of badges above the breast pocket.
23.
A number of badges are worn above the breast pocket such as medal ribbons and name
badges. The bottom of these badges is to level with the top of the breast pocket, and worn centrally.
A number of members have been seen regularly wearing badges incorrectly:

Overlapping the top of the pocket;
Not positioned centrally; and/or
Crookedly positioned.
AAFC Uniform Instructions
24.
Members are drawn to the AAFC Uniform Instructions v 3.31 which appear on the AAFC
Resource Centre. All members should familiarise themselves with the contents and ensure that
follow the instructions contained therein.
25.
HQ3WG point of contact for all matters relating to dress is WGWOFF, WOFF(AAFC) R
McFadden.
Saluting of Cadet Under Officers

26.
Reference is made to HQAAFC RI 05/10 which clarified AAFC policy on saluting of Cadet
Under Officers. It is reminded that the previous 3WG ‘custom’ of cadets not saluting Cadet Under
Officers whilst in the company of an airman has never been AAFC National Policy, and this local
custom has been discontinued. Commanders do not have the option to vary this requirement at
local level. For clarification, the policy is as follows:
a.
CUOs are to be saluted by cadets (CDT-CWOFF) at all appropriate times
irrespective of who else is present. In any event, compliments should be paid to any higher
rank by way of a simple greeting such as ‘Good Morning Sir’, ‘Good Afternoon LAC’ or
‘Good Evening Sergeant’. Alternatively a simple ‘Corporal’ or ‘Ma’am’ may be more
appropriate. This goes hand-in-hand with a salute, for those so entitled. In the example of a
CCPL passing by a CUO and an LAC(AAFC) standing together, the CCPL should salute
and offer the greeting ‘LAC, Sir’ to the duo. In that way, the appropriate compliment is paid
to both members. The logic is that each member receives the appropriate compliment for
their rank. It is not to be viewed that saluting a CUO in the presence of an instructor is in
some way disrespectful to the instructor. It is important that an appropriate greeting is made
to acknowledge the position of both individuals. At all times common sense should apply,
especially when large numbers of members of different ranks are gathered. At no times
should an instructor ever salute a CUO.
27.
HQ3WG point of contact for all matters relating to protocol and AAFC customs is
WGWOFF, WOFF(AAFC) R McFadden.
E-Mail Correspondence
28.
All members are reminded that correct forms of address are to be used in all AAFC e-mails.
Broadcast e-mails where there are members both senior and junior to the writer should be opened
with ‘Sir, Ma’am, Colleagues’ or similar. The use of such terms as ‘excusing rank’ are NOT to be
used. Rank is never excused in the AAFC.
Staff and E-Media Policy
29.
Reference is made to SOADMIN/POL/09 (2) which outlines the AAFC Policy on E-Media
which is attached to this RI.
