(Curtain making)
Short Learning Programme
The Curtain Making Short Learning Programme (SLP) provides learners with
a basic knowledge and understanding of curtain making and the basics for
decorative sewing. SLPs differ from our full qualifications, which are registered with the South African Qualifications Authority on the National
Qualifications Framework. Curtaining and decorative sewing is an integral
part of the Interior Decorating process because it is the final phase of the
process as an idea develops from an abstract design to a tangible, finished
product. Students are presented with the basic techniques of sewing that
can be applied to all aspects of Decoration. Lectures include:

Introduction to curtain making and revision of basic sewing
Introduction to curtain hardware
Cutting fabric and lining choices
Measuring curtains and determining fabric and pattern match
Curtain heading and applying a variety of stitches
Curtain headers and handmade headers.
Basic needlework applied to scatter cushions and bed linen
Introduction to blinds
Blind construction
Create scatter cushions or bed linen
Entry requirements:
Applicants need to have basic sewing skills.

The following full time qualifications can be studied at the DSSA:
• BA Fashion Design (3 years minimum study)
• BA Graphic Design (3 years minimum study)
• BA Interior Design (3 years minimum study)
• Higher Certificate: Art and Design (1 year minimum study)
