Twelve juniors were inducted into the Potosi NHS Chapter. The banquet was held at the Holiday Gardens with a
candle lighting ceremony. Students are selected for the
society based on the four principles: Scholarship, Character, Service, and Leadership. No student is inducted simply
because of a high academic average. Membership in the
National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that
can be awarded to a high school student.
The following seniors were
installed as officers for the
year. Kaitlyn White, President; Dan Post, Secretary;
Kyle Kaiser, Treasurer, and
Thomas Leibfried, Vice
President.
Mr. Jerry Downs honored us as the guest
speaker. Mr. Saari, Mr. Uppena and Mrs.
Schenkel (advisor) offered congratulatory
remarks.

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY
Above: Anthony Udelhoven, Josh Gerhards, Tom
Abell, and Brooklyn Friederick work on the
research to make their National History Day
exhibits.
Middle school students are working on their research projects for the local National History Day
(NHD) contest. Each year, more than half a million students, encouraged by thousands of teachers
nationwide participate in the NHD contest. Students choose historical topics related to a theme and
conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history
interviews and historic sites. After analyzing and interpreting their sources and drawing conclusions
about their topics’ significance in history, students present their work in original papers, websites,
exhibits, performances and documentaries. These products are entered into competitions in the
spring at local, state and national levels where they are evaluated by professional historians and
educators. The program culminates in the Kenneth E. Behring National Contest each June held at the
University of Maryland at College Park.
The Potosi NHD contest will be held on Wednesday, March 11 from 12:30-4:30 p.m. in the high
school library.
Mr. Chandler and Mrs. Siegert's students will be interviewed and judged on their
projects. 6th and 7th graders are doing exhibits, while the 8th graders are working on documentaries. The public is welcome to attend from 3:30-4:30 p.m.! The top 4 entries from each category
will advance to the regional contest held at UW-LaCrosse on March 30. Best of luck to our young
historians!
THANK YOU
Potosi Schools received a $2500.00 donation from the
Tennyson-Potosi Community Bank. The money will be used to
help fund the new District-wide PBIS (Positive Behavior
Interventions and Support) initiative and continue to
strengthen the Character Ed program. Celebrating student
achievement and rewarding students for showing great
character are examples of how this donation will be used.
Madison Opera for the Young performed with Potosi Elementary students Jan
27. Potosi has a long tradition of inviting this professional group as an artist-inresidence experience for the students.
Beauty and the Beast as performed by the Opera for the Young is based
on a 1771 French opera set on an exotic Indian Ocean island. The story
highlighted universal themes: beauty is only skin deep, the redemptive
power of love and bravery, and the challenge and reward of family responsibility.
Aspen Walsh and Brad Perry were
featured in the production as
Strawberry and Banana. Other
Grade 5 students were onstage
birds. Grade 3 -4 offered support
as offstage chorus. Mr. Shaw
helped as the Magic Waterfall
Madison Opera for the Young is scheduled to work
with our students in October of next school
year. They will then present The Magic Flute.
Schoolwide Reading Buddies meet once a month to read and do activities centered on the
month's character trait focus. In January, we had an ice cream sundae party to celebrate
SELF-DISCIPLINE. Self-discipline involves skills in completing homework, taking exams,
and finishing the first semester strong!

Elementary
Character
Council
The Elementary Character Council came up with some fun activities for our Character Groups to do for January. The character trait was self-discipline. When each student walked into the classroom, he/she got to
pick a piece of candy and was encouraged to practice self-discipline by not eating it until the end. Each group
came up with an acrostic poem for the word "Self-discipline". The final activity was having all kids sit on the
floor while one person blew bubbles. The students were to sit still while the bubbles floated around without
trying to pop them. It was hard to do. Most students could do it!
Middle School Fundraiser
The middle school recently had a Little Caesar's Pizza fundraiser to raise money for their class trips and
other activities they take part in. The students who reached their selling goal were entered into a drawing for cash prizes. Winners were Riley Thomas-Coates, Brooklyn Friederick, Konner Schroeder, Jason
Oyen, Tucker Leibfried, Justice Udelhofen, Kaitlin Pluemer, Amanda Roling, Kurt Ringberg-Cardey, and Jaydon Carbone. Note: Kurt and Jaydon are not pictured. Top sellers were Justice Udelhofen, Konner
Schroeder, Jaydon Carbone, Jason Oyen and Riley Thomas-Coates.

The Bottom Line
by Ron Saari (1-30-15)
The purpose of this letter is to keep our community informed with facts and options that are
being considered and/or pursued. Please know that no decisions have been made. The Potosi
School District’s Facility Committee has been meeting since February of 2014. This group of
community members have studied the building’s concerns and needs, and prioritized them. The
school’s needs include improvements for energy efficiency, safety, and maintenance.
The energy efficiency items include: lighting, windows, insulation, HVAC, and Boiler upgrade.
The safety items include: an intercom system, fire alarm system, and security with a single
entrance point of entry.
The maintenance items include: flooring, ceiling, roof over the HS IMC, sinking foundation,
cafeteria entrance, ADA accessibility, and some needed remodeling/updating after 50 years of
use.
Several years ago the community pursued building an auditorium. Mr. Keith Livens, alumni of
Potosi, offered a gift of $400,000 toward new construction. Following an interest survey by the
community, the project was stopped as being too cost prohibitive.
During the last 12 months, community members attending the walk-a-round school tours
expressed a desire to again explore more cost effective options for improving our fine arts /
auditorium facilities. During one of our community walk-a-round tours and after surveying
about energy efficiency items and maintenance items in the HS IMC, an idea surfaced: to
upgrade the maintenance items and energy efficiency items in this area and remodel the existing
space for our fine arts / auditorium. This unique plan was recently presented to Mr. Livens who
graciously accepted it and agreed to donate $400,000 toward it. This donated money gives us an
opportunity to get our building’s high priority needs fixed in a more cost effective plan. It allows
us to fix multiple problems and create a fine arts location / auditorium (as Mr. Livens wants his
donated dollars to support).
As noted above, the areas we are looking at addressing are needing attention regardless of Mr.
Livens’ donated money. The Facility Committee is in the process of prioritizing needs and
finalizing costs for each segment of the possible project. When this is completed, this
information will be shared with the community.
The other options that we are pursuing is a QZAB (Qualified Zone Academy Bond) loan. This is
a zero percent interest loan. This possibility would save a tremendous amount of money. More
information regarding this will come later. Questions and community input is always welcome.
Please contact Ron Saari at 763-2162. Thank you.
