Great Works Regional Land Trust: Beach Plum Farm

Beach Plum Farm, located on the ocean side of Route 1
in Ogunquit, beckons visitors to the days of salt-water
farms and natural habitats for migrating birds, butterflies,
bayberries, beach plums and other wildlife. Visitors can
stroll leisurely on a half-hour loop trail with a view of gardens, the Ogunquit River, dunes and the ocean.
The 22-acre farm, the last of its kind in Ogunquit, is the
site of Great Works’ offices and a museum for memorabilia.
Beach Plum Farm was generously donated to Great Works by Joe Littlefield of Ogunquit, who
passed away in 2011. The donation of this preserve is in memory of his uncle, Roby Littlefield who
was a Maine State Senator and a veteran of World War I. Roby worked Beach Plum Farm as a
vegetable farm from the 1920s and established the community gardens that continue to this day.
Beach Plum Farm is one of several public access sites owned and maintained by the nonprofit Great Works Regional Land Trust. Great Works provides conservation options and recreational opportunities for the towns of Ogunquit, Wells, Eliot, Berwick, South Berwick and North
Berwick. A membership-organization, Great Works has conserved over 4,800 acres in its 25-year
history. Beach Plum Farm is open to visitors from dawn to dusk. Trail maps for this site and other
scenic places, such as Orris Falls, Bauneg Beg Mountain, Douglas Memorial Woods, Beaver Dam
Heath, Perkinstown Commons, York River, and Mount Agamenticus, are available inside the

The Arts Are Alive in Ogunquit
A trip to Ogunquit isn’t complete without an adventure in the arts! Start with the Ogunquit Museum
of American Art, started in the 1950s by homegrown artist Henry Strater, a student of Ogunquit’s famous
artists’ colony nestled in Perkins Cove. Located just south of Perkins Cove on Shore Road and overlooking
Narrow Cove, the beautiful gardens and breathtaking ocean views rival the renowned artwork and sculpture.
Today’s artists continue the tradition at the Barn Gallery on Shore Road at Bourne Lane. Home to
exhibitions and programs by members of Ogunquit Art Association and other local artists from Spring
through Fall, you’ll find art to every taste - contemporary, classic, sculpture, photography, and more. Many
pieces are for sale – perfect for an Ogunquit memory and all are produced by the thriving art community still
active in Ogunquit today. An artists’ retreat to such names as Charles Woodbury and Hamilton Easter Field,
one can spend countless hours viewing the galleries around town. Throughout the summer and fall, street art
fairs make it easy to find the perfect expression of what Maine and Ogunquit mean to you.
Beyond the canvas, live theatre at the Ogunquit Playhouse brings Broadway to the Beach each
season from May to October. With more than 75 years of professional theatre and summertime children’s
productions, the Ogunquit Playhouse is a destination for the entire family! Ogunquit has always been an
arts-lovers destination. From the sheer beauty of the white sandy beaches and the dramatic cliffs of Marginal
Way to the picturesque fishermen’s harbor at Perkins Cove – all make Ogunquit a memorable experience for

Bicycles are everywhere in Ogunquit!
The Ogunquit Police use bicycles to patrol the streets. Many businesses use bicycles to
make deliveries. Seasonal workers use bikes to get to and from work, and people cycle for
enjoyment and transportation. There are some days that Ogunquit looks like a little Amsterdam-by-the-Sea with all the bikes! It is truly the greening of Ogunquit!
The Ogunquit Police Department welcomes you, but would like to remind you to ride
safely and please follow the Ogunquit ordinances and Maine State rules for bicycling. Maine
law generally gives bicyclists the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicle operators.
Bicyclists may use public roads, and they must obey traffic laws such as stopping at stop
signs, yielding to pedestrians at crosswalks and yielding to traffic when entering a road from
a driveway.
Bicyclists ride with traffic, not against it. They are to ride as far to the right as practicable
except when passing, avoiding hazards or preparing for a left turn. Bicyclists must have and
use headlights at night, as well as rear reflectors and foot/ankle/pedal reflectors. Functional
brakes are important too! Cyclists under 16 must wear bike helmets. Bicyclists may not ride
on sidewalks in Ogunquit, including the Marginal Way, though they may walk thier bike on
either. The town of Ogunquit does provide bike racks at beach parking lots, Perkins Cove and
various spots through out the town.

The Ogunquit Playhouse Celebrates 80 Years of Broadway at the Beach!
America’s Foremost Summer Theatre
The Ogunquit Playhouse is one of Maine’s cultural jewels and a cornerstone of America’s
theatrical heritage. Over its 80-year history of producing the highest quality theatre, it has
earned the title of “America’s Foremost Summer Theatre” and is one of the last of the great
Summer Theatres from the Straw Hat Circuit still producing traditional live musical theatre.
Broadway showman Walter Hartwig and his wife Maude established the Playhouse in a
small renovated garage in the center of Ogunquit in 1933 and four years later built the state
of the art theatre in its present day location. In 1950, a young actor, John Lane, became General Manager and eventually took ownership of the Ogunquit Playhouse bringing in business
partner Henry Weller to oversee the operations. Through their dedicated direction, professional
integrity and impeccable taste, the Ogunquit Playhouse legacy of excellence continued through
the twentieth century. John Lane retired in 1997 after transferring ownership to the not-forprofit foundation that oversees the Ogunquit Playhouse today. John Lane passed away in 2000,
however the Playhouse continues to thrive as a dynamic testimony of his commitment to live
theatre.
Since its beginnings the Ogunquit Playhouse attracted show businesses legends – a list of
stars that reads like a who’s-who of Broadway and Hollywood, including Bette Davis, Myrna
Loy, William Powell and Van Johnson from the early days and more recently, Sally Struthers,
Stefanie Powers, Rue McClanahan and Charles Shaughnessy. For 80 years, the Ogunquit Playhouse has been creating shows in Southern Maine and bringing the best talent from Broadway,
television and film to its stage. The Ogunquit Playhouse’s shows are produced and rehearsed
onsite, and each show is uniquely cast for its audience. Come see a show at the Playhouse and
experience as-big-as Broadway productions in a unique National Historic Register building in
its original pastoral setting, with stellar casts and each show, a once-in-a-lifetime performance!
