History
The tri-city area of Gdansk was once a fishing village back in the 9th century. During the 10th century, Gdansk, along with the rest of Pomerania
was annexed to the newborn Polish state and a stronghold was built where the Radunia canal flows into the Motlawa.
During the next centuries, the area developed as a port and expanded northward onto what is today the Old Town. The region of Gdansk
became an independent principality back in 1138 following Poland’s fragmentation. It was ruled by a local Slav dynasty called the East Pomeranian
dukes.
In 1400, trade was at an all-time high in Gdansk and the city grew to approximately 10,000 inhabitants. After a revolt in 1454 by the townspeople
who were angered by the increased taxes, Gdansk was rewarded with numerous privileges, including a monopoly on the grain trade and a greater
degree of political independence than any other Polish city.
By the mid 16th century, Gdansk was Poland’s largest city, with nearly 40,000 inhabitants and was most important trading center in Central and
Eastern Europe.
Napoleon was once heard to say that Gdansk was the key to everything and Hitler must have agreed, as he started World War II there. Gdansk

was the most devastated city after the war, but postwar reconstruction was very extensive. Walking around central Gdansk today is a bit like
going back in time to a 16th century town.

Please note that the recommended shops are in
Gdansk Old City, which is approximately a
45 minute taxi ride away from the port city of
Gdynia. It is always best to agree to a price before
departing.
SHOPPING INFORMATION
Most shops are open Monday through Saturday.
Shops are closed on Sunday. However, most of the
recommended shops will be open throughout the
day while the ship is in port.
BANKING INFORMATION
Kantors are the name of currency exchange
officesin Poland. They are located througthout
the city and easy to find. Most are open Monday
through Saturday. Some are open 24 hours.
Kantors do not exchange traveler’s checks.

Many stores participating in the Value Added Tax (VAT) refund
program in which non-European citizens may be entitled to re-claim a
portion or all of the tax paid (depending on the total purchase price).
Each store’s participating in the VAT refund program is discretionary.
In addition regulations and conditions governing the refund of VAT are

making a purchase to inquire as to whether or not store participates
