Symphonic Band and Jazz II Ensemble in Concert
On April 28 the Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble II will perform in the Clyde H. Wells Fine
Arts Center Auditorium. The symphonic band portion of the concert will be “Now I Lay Me
Down to Sleep,” an exploration into songs for and about children for band. About
the jazz portion of the concert, Greg Ball states, “This is the best Jazz Ensemble
II I’ve had since teaching here at Tarleton. I am able to play much more
challenging music with them. Most of the music we are playing I’ve
done previously with the top band. This will be an outstanding
performance!”

Two Choir Concerts: Mozart Requiem and Stage and Song
The month of April will be a busy one for the vocal
division, as we will present two concerts at Tarleton
and several at high schools around the region. On
Saturday, April 5, the choirs of Tarleton will join the
Cross Timbers Civic Chorale to present Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem with select musicians
from the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. The concert
will take place in the Clyde H. Wells Auditorium
at 7:30 pm. Composed in 1791, the Requiem was
Mozart’s last composition and is one of his most
popular and respected works. The piece will also
be framed by two works of English composer John
Tavener, Funeral Ikos and Song for Athene. Faculty
members Heather Hawk, soprano, and Iwao Asakura,
baritone, will feature as soloists alongside Michael Hanawalt, tenor, and Laurissa Backlin, mezzo soprano.
Admission to the concert is $12 for reserved seating. Tickets will go on sale beginning March 31 at the Clyde H. Wells
Fine Arts Center Box Office, weekdays from 2-6 pm. Tickets will also be available starting at 6 pm before the concert

The final concert of the year will take place on Tuesday, April 22 at 7:30 pm in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center.
Stage and Song is the title of the concert. It will include a set of music by Tucker Biddlecombe, Director of Choirs at
Vanderbilt University, who has written a piece for the occasion to be performed by the Select Women’s Ensemble.
The remainder of the concert will range from Barbershop to Broadway, including “Make Our Garden Grow” from
Bernstein’s Candide and a version of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” by the Pentatonix. Tickets are $5 or free
with Tarleton ID.
2014 Honors Recital and Awards
Tarleton’s most accomplished student musicians will perform on Monday, April 7 in the prestigious Honors Recital
at Tarleton State. Janice Horak, Assistant Vice President of Marketing & Communications, will host the event. Steve
Chambers, Instructor of Music, will accompany the students.
The 7:30 pm concert at the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium is free and open to the public. ULTRA Club
members are invited to attend.
For more than a decade, the Honors Recital has provided a public showcase for outstanding
performers in the University’s Department of Fine Arts. About 30 undergraduate students auditioned.
Of those, 11 students advanced to a place on the 2014 Honors Recital program:
Vocal — John Pollock, Zach Steele, Nate Early, Ashley Morrison
Instrumental — Christian Lyon, Destin Chapman, Tanner Jordan, Rico Allen
Piano — Sophia Sands, Emma Krahn, Minette Sicard
Immediately following the recital is an awards ceremony, during which three Honors Recital
participants will receive one of the highest music scholarships that Tarleton has to offer, the Center Stage Scholarship.
The music faculty selects the Center Stage winners from each of the three performance areas represented on the
program (voice, instrumental, and piano).

Now on Display: Spring Student Art Exhibit
Theatre at Tarleton presents: The Heidi Chronicles
The Department of Fine Arts is pleased to announce
the annual Spring Student Exhibition in the Clyde H.
Wells Fine Arts Center Gallery. Work created in the art
studio courses at Tarleton State University is on display
from March 18 to April 16. A wide range of styles of
art depict the depth and variety of Tarleton students’
talents, such as painting, sculpture, photography,
animation, and others.
The Heidi Chronicles by Wendy Wasserstein was written in 1988
and is a Pulitzer Prize and Tony award-winning Comedy/Drama.
Digital media professor Chris Ireland states, “ The
students do all the work in setting up the show, from
making the art, preparing it to be displayed, and
installing it in the gallery. We as a faculty are just
proud to have the opportunity to show off the talents
of our diverse and growing art area.“ There will be a
reception for the artists that is open to the public on
April 16, 2014 from 5-6:30 pm in the Clyde H. Wells
Fine Arts Center Gallery. The reception will double as
a retirement reception for Associate Professor Sharon Seelig, who, after 20 years of service, will be moving on with her
career.
Starting April 17, the next exhibit will showcase the work of graduating seniors in the annual Senior Exhibitions which
runs until May 6.
Coming Soon: Spring 2014 Senior Art Exhibition
Ten students graduating with Bachelor in Fine Art degrees this
May will be showcasing their work in senior exhibits starting April
17 through May 6 at the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Gallery.
Because of the large number of graduates, there will be a rotation of
five shows in the gallery during that time. This gives the opportunity
for the artists to mount a professional exhibition of a complete body
of work that showcases a cohesive portfolio in the field of study the
student intends to focus on upon graduation.

Senior advisor and art professor Chris Ireland states, “This is the most
graduates we have had in one semester since I have been here. The
seniors have worked very hard in getting their work ready for these
exhibitions and I think you will see in each senior a signature style
and creative approach to their craft.”

Heidi is a successful art historian. The plot follows her life
experiences from the late 1960’s through the 1980’s. We meet her
friends as they move through their college years into becoming
young professionals. Societal topics that the play examines include
the progress of a generation from the activism of the 1960’s to the
materialism of the 1980’s, feminism, politics and sexuality. The
Heidi Chronicles has been described as a wise and funny play.
Some of Tarleton’s cast is comprised of Heather Capps as Heidi
Holland, Mary Meiron as Susan Johnston, Rolan Garcia as Peter
Petrone, and Cody Daniell as Scoop Rosenbaum. The play opens
April 8 and runs through April 12. Tickets can be purchased at the
Box Office located in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center.

Wind Ensemble and Jazz I to offer Pre-New York City Performance
The Tarleton State Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band I will be soon heading for New York City to participate in the
International Music Festival at Carnegie Hall. But before they head out, the bands will give a preview of their New
York performances on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 7:30 pm in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium. General
admission tickets are available one hour before the concert and are $5.00 or free with Tarleton ID.
The Wind Ensemble will open the April 15 concert just as they will in New York City with the Overture to Candide,
by Leonard Bernstein. Anthony Pursell, Tarleton’s Director of Bands and Conductor of the Wind Ensemble, sees the
opportunity to open the concert in Carnegie Hall as iconic. Pursell states, “After all, it was Leonard Bernstein who led
the New York Philharmonic in the premier performance of Candide at Carnegie Hall. To open our debut performance in
Carnegie Hall with this work is just the right thing to do.”
The Wind Ensemble will also perform several works featuring Tarleton faculty, alumni and friends. Dr. Heather Hawk,
Assistant Professor of Voice, will be the featured vocal soloist in Gustav Mahler’s Urlicht. Dr. Gary Westbrook,
Associate Director of Bands, will guest conduct Joseph Turrin’s Fandango, which features soloists Dr. Brian Walker
(trumpet) and Dr. Jonathan Gill (trombone). The Wind Ensemble will then conclude its portion of the concert with
David Gillingham’s Concertino for Four Percussion and Wind Ensemble, which will feature Tarleton alumni Michael
Crawford and Stephen Seymour, and
guests Larry Lawless and Tahlequah
Kirk.
In related news, Greg Ball will play a
variety of charts from the academic year
and a few new gems to present in New
York’s Central Park on Monday, April 21.
A collage of soloists and sectional work
will close out the Pre-New York Concert
in the typical high-energy manner the
TSU Jazz Band is known for producing.
