While the term “networking”
is relatively new, the concept most
certainly is not. Successful
Sarah Lentini,
businesspeople have always
Greece Chamber of understood the value of
Commerce
cultivating a network of

relationships.
In-person or offline
networking remains essential, even as our online
networks expand. In fact, interestingly, as the internet
(our online international network) grows exponentially
each day – with staggering numbers of posts, clicks,
tweets, shares, and likes – opportunities for live, direct,
personal, offline interactions may even be growing in
importance.
It makes sense to develop multi-pronged and
complementary online and offline networking strategies.
Online networking provides the potential to reach many
with great economy, lending itself to quick, simple, less
personal communications and relationships. In-person
offline networking provides opportunity for
communication with greater depth and individuality and,
therefore, the development of more meaningful and
complex relationships – even partnerships.
Numerous online and offline monthly networking
opportunities are just some of the important benefits the
Greece Chamber of Commerce – the largest suburban
Monroe County chamber of commerce – offers its
membership, comprised of both large and small
businesses from all industries throughout the region.
Networking provides business members with numerous
competitive advantages; chief among them are visibility,
information, and relationships.
Whether sponsoring, hosting or attending a
networking or signature event or being featured in our
publications, our members gain important visibility – the
first step in building name recognition, a brand, and a
loyal consumer base. This is important for all businesses,
especially smaller and/or newer businesses, on their way
to becoming larger businesses, such as Doc’s Facilities
Solutions, North Forest Office Space, World Gym Greece,
and MacGregor’s – just a few of our members that
recently opened or expanded.
Another value in networking is information. Our
networking opportunities give business members access
to news, ideas, and perspectives from a spectrum of
industries, along with the platform to provide information
about their own businesses, increasing their market
access and reach. We help mix things up a bit, so that
business leaders get exposed to new people and new
thinking. Greece Chamber forums provide the
combination of structured and unstructured conversation
and cross pollination that can lead to discovery and
innovation.
Lastly, over time, networking builds the relationships
that lead to a loyal base of customers, suppliers, referrers,
and partners. We all prefer to do business with people we
know and trust. Members who utilize our various
networking resources become known and sought, often
taking on leadership roles in the community. Engaging the
Greece Chamber’s regional network and rich menu of
networking and promotional opportunities year-round,
business leaders gain important and lasting connections
that help augment their individual marketing efforts,
increase their market penetration and “stickiness,” and
grow their businesses.

SELLING YOUR IDEAS
Have you had difficulty with persuading someone about
your idea? Do you find yourself struggling with
explaining an idea to someone? Described below is a
scenario that might be helpful to you when you’re “selling
an idea to someone.”
Sally Seller recently became a member of Greece Chamber
of Commerce and is very interested in learning more
about the programs and services offered by the Chamber.
She just started attending some of the Networking
Gatherings, that are scheduled on a monthly basis, to see
if she can discover some insights that would help her in
running her retail
business more
effectively and
efficiently. At
last month’s
meeting, she
introduced
herself to Ivan
Influencer, a
Chamber
Ambassador, and they began talking about each other’s
interests and desires. Sally found out that Ivan is a
consultant who specializes in training salespeople. Sally
has known for a while that she has difficulty explaining an
idea to somebody and shared that with Ivan. Ivan
mentioned that he might be able to help her and
suggested that they get together for coffee after the
networking session. She graciously agreed and they met
at a nearby Dunkin
Donuts.
Sally and Ivan
discussed in detail
about Sally’s
dilemma --- lack of
expertise in selling an
idea to someone.
Ivan pulled out a 3 x 5 card from his pocket and
mentioned that it contains a method that might be useful
to Sally. (cont’ on page 16)
Page 20
LEADERSHIP GREECE: SELLING YOUR IDEAS
This method is in the form of a “checklist” that Sally could use
when preparing herself in selling an idea. Sally took the card
from Ivan and read it, which is described as follows:
IDEA CLARIFIER
It Sweet and Simple." These may trigger creative or innovative
ways for developing, and then implementing a sound proposal.

When communicating an idea, we often find ourselves struggling ______________________________________________________
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------to explain it accurately to others. We need to organize our
--------------------------thoughts in order to be clear and concise on what we're
recommending to do. By the way, an idea is usually new and
actionable that we’re suggesting --- an activity or an event for
consideration.
After Sally was done reading it, Ivan asked if she had any questions
or comments about what she had read. Sally said that she liked it
and felt that it would help her. Ivan suggested that Sally try this
method out, essentially practice it, over the next few weeks. They

1. WHAT---Clearly being specific as to the activity or event.
(What are we trying to do, to fix, to develop, to improve, to
eliminate, to correct, etc.?)
2. WHY---The rationale or reason for pursuing the activity or event.
(Why do we need to initiate it? and/or What is the purpose for
doing it?)

Greece Program
3. HOW---A plan or outline describing actions for accomplishing the
activity or event?
(How might we work through it? and/or What steps should we
take to satisfy the purpose?)
4. ANALYSIS---There are a number of items requiring data and
information which supports the What, Why, and How. These items
usually include answers to the following seven questions:
• Who is all involved --- the Players?
• When do various Things happen --- the Timeframes?
• Where do these Things happen --- the Locations?
• What are the needed Resources (i.e. People, Money,
Materials, Equipment, Facilities?)
• What are some Benefits --- Helpful Features?
• What are some Limitations --- Harmful Features?
• What are some Intended Consequences and some
Unintended Consequences?
5. FOLLOW-UP---Some expectations that describe the necessary
follow through or closure required. Many times, they are usually
stated in both short-term and long-term time frames.
Finding effective and affordable leadership
training for managers is often challenging.
“Leadership Greece” is the perfect
opportunity to provide such a training
program. After sending seven managers
through Leadership Greece over the past
three years, I continue to see the benefits.
They have all developed and strengthened
their leadership skills while learning about
our community. I sincerely believe that this
program is an invaluable and very worthwhile investment in our
current and future leaders.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Doc’s Facilities Solutions, Inc. -by Terry Hogan, SMS, Greece Chamber of
Commerce Director of Marketing & Communications
oc’s Facilities Solutions, Inc. was founded in 2013 with a mission to dramatically
improve the quality and the health impact of professional cleaning services through
direct consultation with commercial cleaning companies. Doc’s provides training and
education on everything from best practices to comprehensive needs assessments
and offers ongoing support for small and medium sized businesses. Their goal—to be
the #1 resource for professional cleaning services in the Greater Rochester area.
Shamila (CEO) and Joel (President) Craddock are committed to being the one-stop resource for
professional cleaning services. A key focus is ensuring that janitorial industry projects be awarded
to locally owned companies committed to healthy cleaning.
The business is growing rapidly and has expanded from a 100 sq. ft. facility to 1,500 sq. ft.,
now located at 65 Industrial Park Circle, Rochester, NY. Doc’s Facilities Solutions works with local
contractors and local in-house businesses offering consulting services nationwide, along with
offering training and sales opportunities in Western, NY, Northern Pennsylvania and Northeastern
Ohio. Joel has extensive experience with commercial janitorial service providers, commercial and
residential carpet cleaning, commercial hardwood floor care, installation, repair and refinishing, as
well as construction clean-ups, exhaust hood cleaning and inspection, consumable supplies, and
cleaning equipment. He also has a wealth of knowledge in the private sector (both union and nonShamila Craddock,
Doc’s Facilities Solutions, Inc., CEO
union shops), in-house operations, contracted facilities, and maintenance contract providers.
Shamila brings to the table organization and direction, seeing to it that the daily operations in the
janitorial operations, bidding and estimating, job loading, implementation of best practices, implementation of technology
advancement, writing SOP (Standard Operating Procedures), OSHA Compliance Training, implementation and training of sales
procedures, serves as the company’s customer service representative and mentor for start-up companies. Together they make up
a dynamic team. “Being raised in Rochester, I want to see my city flourish, but that cannot happen without the community’s
support,” said Shamila Craddock, Doc’s Facilities Solutions CEO. “That is why Doc’s Facilities Solutions, Inc. works locally to
continually improve the sometimes tarnished reputation of cleaning by arming cleaning professionals with certified training
programs and proper cleaning knowledge to bring value-add to an often overlooked industry, focusing on cleaning for health and
keeping the profits in Rochester.”
If you are looking for a highly respected company that provides exceptional work quality, great customer service in the
industrial cleaning arenas and will keep your dollars in the local economy (consulting, training, commercial janitorial services,
carpet and upholstery cleaning, epoxy floor systems, exhaust hood and duct cleaning, handyman services, window cleaning, and
power washing) be sure to contact Doc’s Facilities Solutions, Inc. at 585–286-8088 or www.docsfs.com and don’t forget to check
out their LinkedIn page and “Like” them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DocsFacilitiesSolutions.

Craddock: 13 things to jump start a
startup—by Joel Craddock
n today’s economy many newly created jobs are entry level
positions, wonderful except that it has led to many seasoned
professionals being laid off at an alarming rate. They’re often left
without the monetary funds and basic benefits needed to support
their families.
I went through this two years ago after leaving a career with one
company. I was lured away by another firm that offered me the world,
but after seven months my position was eliminated.
I was left trying to find a job while the economy was trying to recover.
I found myself overqualified for many positions, armed with a college
education, two business degrees and more than 25 years in the facility
management field. I was known by many of my former competitors,
who all were very interested in hiring me, but none of them could
offer something full-time, or could come close to the pay and benefits
that I needed.
I was lucky to have Shamila Boykins in my life. She became Mrs.
Craddock in October, but before that helped me find a new course by
Pictured above: Joel Craddock, President of
Doc’s Facilities Solutions, Inc.
motivating me. She told me that I needed to believe in myself,
surround myself with new people and start my own company.
She noticed that I only surrounded myself with high performance sales executives and business owners in
various fields. She saw the entrepreneurial spirit in me. She would become my business partner.
What we have accomplished since Jan., 2013 has been nothing short of a miracle. We have developed a
niche market with a mission of dramatically improving the quality and health impact of professional cleaning
services with commercial cleaning companies.
What we have found out during all of this is that many startup companies like ourselves do not realize
what it takes to actually assemble a successful company.
It’s about picking the correct business entity, a proper bank (number of free transactions), payroll
provider, business insurance, business name with an easy to identify logo, business plan, marketing plan, IT
support (proper equipment and software), sales process, health care benefits, 401K planning, even the back
office things like bookkeeping and finding a proper tax professional.
We’ve made many mistakes but that’s OK. If you’re starting a business you’ll want a mentor or coach who
can help, but someone who has made their own mistakes setting up a business or had to overcome adversity.
Why? They’ll know the warning signs to help you succeed in addition to their industrial knowledge.
