package. The drawing for this raffle will be held at our
January 28th General Membership Meeting. There will be
ten $100 prizes awarded. This raffle helps defray the cost

FIN & FUR RAFFLE COMING SOON
By the time you get this newsletter you should have received
materials for our annual Fin and Fur fund raiser. See the
February issue of the Bucket for more details.
These raffles gives us exposure to hundreds of sportsmen
who have purchased thousands of dollars worth of tickets
every year. The gun raffles usually take place during the
low fishing activity times of the year. They offer a diversion
to the winter blahs.
Below is a list of upcoming gun raffles whose sponsors
have permitted our participation. If you are looking for
some fun, please go to these raffles to support the
organizations that sponsor them, thereby supporting us.

CASEY CELEBRATES
ANOTHER BIRTHDAY
MARCH 1st - 3rd, 2013
These contributions have enabled us to make a significant impact toward
the improvement of the fishery of Lake Erie. Some of the projects that have
benefited from these contributions include the acquisition of property at
Trout Run, the construction of a handicapped access ramp at the North
Pier, improvements to Cascade Creek and many others. The biggest project
that was completed last summer was the Liberty Pier Fishing Access Area.
The Friends of Fish contribution helped cover the $19,000 engineering
work and our share of the construction costs which was $25,000.
I do not know what we would do without them.

For nine years in a row the Philadelphia based Friends of Fish Foundation
has made a very generous contribution to the S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie. During
this period we have received close to $100,000 from them.

Lt. Col. Jim Rudy (U.S. Army retired) has
been a long time S.O.N.S. member who
now lives in South Carolina. He retired from
the Army and eventually became the CEO
of the Erie Water Authority until his second
retirement. He is an avid fisherman and is
now active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Jim
submitted the article below which was written
for cold water boaters. We added the ice
fishing part. I don’t believe South Carolina
ever gets ice.
Many of us still boat on the water during the
winter months. However, whether fishing,
canoeing, kayaking, or pleasure boating, we
all must be particularly cautious while on the
water. First of all water traffic is significantly
reduced and assistance from another boater
may not be readily available.
When the surface water temperature in
the bay or the lake drops to the mid- 50s
or lower, if one should one fall overboard
or break through the ice, the danger
of hypothermia (loss of body heat) is
significantly increased during these colder
weather months. For example a person in
water temperature of 50 to 60 degrees F.
will suffer exhaustion or unconsciousness
in 1 to 2 hours and has an expected
time of survival of 1 to 6 hours. In water

temperature of 40 to 50 degrees F. those
times reduce to 30 to 60 minutes and 1
to 3 hours respectively. In water close to
freezing hypothermia sets in in less than
20 minutes.
During the cold weather months you should
wear a life jacket (this should always be
done). Ensure you have a whistle fastened
to that life jacket and never be on the water
alone. Note: In the event you fall or get
ejected into the water here are some
water survival techniques:
1. Immediately upon entering the water,
become oriented to the surrounding area.
Try to locate your sinking boat, floating
objects, and other survivors.
2. Try to board a raft or floating platform as
soon as possible to shorten the immersion
time. Body heat is lost many times faster in
water than in the air. Since the effectiveness
of the insulation worn is seriously reduced
by being water soaked, it is important to be
shielded from the wind to avoid a wind-chill
effect. If able to climb aboard a survival craft,
use a canvas or tarpaulin as a shield from the
cold. Huddling close to other occupants in
the craft will also conserve body heat.
3. If unable to get out of the water,
unnecessary swimming will pump out any

warm water between the body and the layers
of clothing and will increase the rate of bodyheat loss. Float as still as possible with legs
together, elbows close to your side and arms
folded across the front of your life jacket. Try
to keep your head and neck out of the water.
Another heat conserving position is to huddle
closely to others in the water making as much
body contact as possible.
4. Keep a positive attitude about your
survival and rescue. This will extend your
survival time until rescue comes. A will to
live does make a difference.
Hopefully you will never have to use any of
the above techniques.
In the case of Ice Fishermen:
1. Never go out on the ice alone. Try to fish
with a buddy or areas where others are also
fishing.
2. Carry a spud to test the ice as you walk
along.
3. Carry spikes to be used to pull yourself
out of the water in case you break through.
4. Bring dry clothes and change into them
as soon as possible.
5. Wear a PFD.
6. Carry a rope with a float in the event
another may need help.
7. Remember no ice is completely safe.
Black ice is the safest. At least 4 inches
(stay off anything less) or more is
recommended. See the chart for ice
thickness recommendations
