How to Prepare for a Heat Treatment
Expectations:
• You will need to stay out of your residence or facility for about 12 hours.
• During the heating process, temperatures will be from 120 degrees to 140 degrees.
• These are lethal temperatures to bed bug populations but not hot enough to damage most things;
however, a few items will need to be removed or prepared.
Some items will need to be removed before the treatment:
• All pets (don’t forget about removing any fish too)
• House plants
• Fresh foods (fruits, vegetables, etc.)
• Food that could melt (chocolate, candy, etc.)
• Medications, both prescription and over the counter
• Cosmetics
• Anything made with wax (candles, crayons, wax figurines, wax fruit, dental floss, etc.)
• Anything pressurized (soda bottles and cans, aerosol cans, fire extinguishers, propane bottles, oxygen
bottles, etc.)
• Flammables (lighters, lamp fuel, solvents, etc.)
• Alcohols (wine, liquor, rubbing alcohol, etc.)
• Wooden and stringed musical instruments (but please leave the cases behind for treatment)
• Firearms and ammunition
• Photo negatives
• Any explosive items
Some of the smaller items can be stored in the refrigerator during the treatment. Larger items can be boxed
and left by the door for inspection. We will determine if any of these items need to be treated.
Please let us know about any family heirlooms and irreplaceable items. We will want to inspect these and
determine if they should be treated. Also, let us know if you have any other items that may be heat sensitive
(heat-sensitive fire alarms, etc.).

How to Prepare for a Heat Treatment
Other things that will need to be prepared:
• Remove all outlet covers
• Move clutter and furniture to allow 2 feet of clear access to every wall in all rooms, including closets
• Take out the trash
• Clothing in drawers can be left in place, except if clothing is tightly packed, then some items must be
removed. However, we may still need to remove the drawers from dressers to help with the air movement.
• Clothing on hangers may be left in closets if the space between the items is large enough to allow the
heated air to circulate. Arrange hanging items to open up air space between them.
• Other clothing left in the heated space must be placed loosely in open weave laundry baskets. Do not
place clothing in plastic bags.
• Place larger fabric items (linens, towels, blankets, etc) in open weave laundry baskets. Pack the items very
loosely to allow for circulation. Do not pack in plastic bags.
• Loose papers need to be gathered and boxed
• We will be using high speed fans, so any items that can be blown around and possibly damaged need to
be protected (glass items, knick-knacks, breakable items, etc.)
• Pictures, paintings, and other wall-mounted items will need to be taken down to prevent damage.
• Turn off and unplug all electronics.
• If you have a waterbed, it will need to be drained prior to treatment. We cannot perform the treatment if
the waterbed is not drained.
• If you have an airbed (including Select Comfort type airbeds), it must be partially deflated and, if electric,
unplugged from the wall outlet.
Returning after treatment:
The temperatures will probably be elevated when you return. You should open the windows or turn on
the air conditioning to aid in cooling. If you find any damage to your possessions, you must bring it to our
attention as soon as it is noticed.
Some or all of your items may be moved during treatment by our team members to get an even heat
distribution. Items will not be refolded and may not be returned to the same spots. The movement of items
is necessary to achieve an even temperature in the unit.
