Tommy Newsom and His Octo-Pussycats
“The key word that describes Tommy’s playing is always - ‘taste!’.....this is a
unique CD expertly played by skilled instrumentalists intent on establishing and
maintaining an integral sound that, above all, swings! It is far more than “casual
listening” music. True, it will evoke occasional hand-clapping or toe-tapping, but
Tommy Newsom’s multi-layered sounds will also encourage re-plays that reveal
fresh nuances each time.” From the album notes by Floyd Levin
Levin, noted jazz
historian and journalist and author of Classic Jazz - A Personal View of the Music
and Musicians. Those “skilled instrumentalists” include Warren Vaché,Wayne
Andre, Karolina Strassmayer, Lisa Parrott, Derek Smith, Noriko Ueda and Sherrie Maricle. Selections

Ruby Braff Trio and Quintet: You Brought a New Kind of
Love • With Bill Charlap, Dick Hyman, Bucky Pizzarelli
and Jake Hanna
The horror of 9/11 prevented a studio session planned by Ruby with Bill
Charlap and Dick Hyman. Instead there were separate sessions. The one with
Dick Hyman was issued as Watch What Happens (19259) and on this CD we
not only have the following day’s session with Bill Charlap but fortunately three
tracks from the March of Jazz 2001, giving us the never to be repeated chance to
hear what they all sounded like together. Selections include It’s Wonderful, Them
There Eyes, Lullaby of the Leaves, Blue and Sentimental, You’re Driving Me Crazy and Between the Devil and the
Deep Blue Sea plus three more. ARCD 19260
The Howard Alden-Dan Barrett Quintet: Live in ‘95
A standout performance by the Quintet, consisting of Howard Alden, Dan
Barrett, Chuck Wilson, Frank Tate and Jackie Williams, which for the first
time captures on record the vitality and surprise of the ABQ’s live dates; diverse
material performed in a fresh manner with a breathtaking blend of swing, melody
and harmony. Guest vocalist Terrie Richards Alden is a definite plus. From the
album notes by Zan Stewart, a veteran jazz journalist who is currently staff jazz
writer for the New Jersey Star Ledger
Ledger. Selections include 9:20 Special, When Lights
Are Low, Perdido, Oriental Strut, Savoy Blues, Jeepers Creepers, That Old Feeling,
Skylark and four more. ARCD 19280

A Double CD for the price of one • Arbors Historical
Series, Volume 5
Flip Phillips, who travelled and worked with some of the greatest musicians and
bands in the world from his days with the first Woody Herman Herd, Jazz at the
Philharmonic and Benny Goodman tours, had a wonderful three-year run at a
club in Florida named the Beowulf. Although the Beowulf no longer exists the
memories of great music linger on in this double CD, recorded in December, 1977
and October, 1978, with Flip at the top of his form playing with his working quartets that included Tom Howard, Don MacLean, Joe Reichgott and John Mason. Among the twenty-five selections on this double CD are Beowulf Blues, Indiana, The Brotherhood of Man, Sweet and Lovely, Body and Soul,

Thee. ARCD 19308
Five Play ... Plus
“As more listeners in this country and around the world get to hear FIVE PLAY,
DIVA, and the growing number of other jazzwomen, the sheer joy and strength of
their music will effortlessly bring pleasure – in Duke Ellington’s liberating phrase
– beyond category.” This is a CD with swinging joy in the solos and ensembles,
ballads that are like overhearing an intimate conversation, one that is full of continual surprises – such is the challenging nature of this music. From the album
notes by Nat Hentoff
Hentoff, celebrated author, journalist and jazz authority who writes
about jazz for the Wall Street Journal and Jazz Times. Artists include Sherrie
Maricle, Anat Cohen, Karolina Strassmayer, Tomoko Ohno, Noriko Ueda, Jami Dauber and Barbara
Laronga performing such selections as Theme From Mr. Broadway, That Old Feeling, Funk in a Deep Freeze,
Bud Powell, On the Good Ship Lollypop and five more. ARCD 19307
Bucky Pizzarelli: Flashes • A Lifetime in Words and
Music • Solo 7-String Guitar, Volume 3
Bucky Pizzarelli reminisces about his sixty-plus years as a professional guitarist in
a CD that could have been titled “The Art of The Ballad.” In it he demonstrates
the myriad ways that lovely songs belonging to “The Great American Songbook”
can be reworked, distilled and reharmonized, often as Bucky was recording
them. Aspiring players would do well to study Bucky’s harmonic innovations,
his moving inner voices, his bass lines, all devices that breath new life into these
American popular classics. From the album notes by the celebrated guitarist
Marty Grosz. Bucky performs and introduces 22 selections including This Nearly Was Mine, Twilight Time,
Willow Weep for Me, Flashes, Last Night When We Were Young, Down Memory Lane, Lonesome Lake and the
Second Movement from Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Guitar Concerto in D. ARCD 19306

Bob Dorough: Sunday at Iridium
Bob Dorough rose to national fame as the music director and composer of many
of the songs heard on Schoolhouse Rock. There are literally millions of Americans
who, after years of Saturday morning exposure to ABC-TV’s Schoolhouse Rock
Rock,

generation of admirers at the midtown Manhattan jazz boîte at 51st Street and
Broadway called Iridium, singing his songs and leading a stellar quartet there
most Sundays. From the album notes by Paul Blair, former Voice of America
music broadcaster who edits Hot House magazine and conducts the popular New
York Jazz Walks, Swing Streets, jazz-focused walking tours through several New York neighborhoods. Performing
with Bob are his regulars Steve Berger and Ed Ornowski, added attractions Steve Gilmore, The Bobettes

Sammy Sherman: A Jazz Original Live at Chan’s
His Autumnal Statement • Arbors Historical Series,
Volume 6
Sammy Sherman, father of noted singer-pianist Daryl Sherman, had his own
voice on the trombone and an uncanny ability to drive trumpet players crazy by
being able to hit notes higher than they could play. “The language of jazz came
naturally to Samuel Sherman; he spoke it like a native. This record at last celebrates a very special artist and man – an American original.” Dan Morgenstern,
a long-time friend of the Sherman family and the Director of the Institute of Jazz
Studies at Rutgers University. Supporting musicians, in addition to daughter Daryl, include Howard Alden,
James Chirillo, Gray Sargent, Jay Leonhart, Frank Tate, Marshall Wood, Dan Barrett, Dick Sudhalter,

Metz’n Around • A Late Night Party With the Metz
Family And Friends John Allred and Terry Myers
“Here, for the first time, you’ll all get a peek at the music of my family, the Metz’s.
Many of these are the tunes that drifted into my bedroom during those “Late Night
Parties” at our house. I am proud to announce for the first time, the entire Metz
clan (father Ed Sr., mother Joey and sons Ed Jr and Tim) got together for
this fun-filled and exciting session and there’s nothing like getting the best in the
business to lend a hand for a little family project. By that I mean John Allred
and Terry Myers. Enjoy it! We certainly did.” Non-playing son, Michael Metz.
Selections include ‘Deed I Do, You Can’t Lose a Broken Heart, Sunday Blues, Someone to Watch Over Me, Red
Riding Hood, Hey Mister Fay, Little Rock Getaway and eight others.

treat. Add the superb piano fireworks of Bill Charlap, and the duets these two

you bring on the elegant drumming of Eddie Locke, the subtle bass beat of
Dennis Irwin, and finally, drop into this mix the lush tones of Harry Allen’s
sax, brace yourself, friends, you are now in for an hour or so of superb music,
elegant jazz provided by some of the best of our composers.” Max Wilk, author

Tom Pletcher and Dick Hyman: If Bix Played Gershwin
A musical fantasy about Bix Beiderbecke and George Gershwin from the fertile
imagination of Dick Hyman, with the authentically Bixian playing of Tom
Pletcher. Aided by an all-star cast of Dan Levinson, David Sager, Vince
Giordano, Bob Leary and Ed Metz Jr. they perform a program of musical speculations about how Bix might have performed various Gershwin songs, mostly
contemporaneous with his career, but a few of which were composed after his
death in 1932, but none of which Bix ever recorded. Among the selections are I
Got Rhythm, Somebody Loves Me, ‘S Wonderful, Sunny Disposish, I’ve Got a Crush
on You, Kongo Kate, Rialto Ripples, But Not for Me and Yankee Doodle Rhythm.

Sheridan displays his great sensitivity on this excellent collection of vintage
tunes, with superb arrangements, bass and drum work by Dave Stone and Tony
DeNicola, and elegant engineering. Sheridan has a light keyboard touch which
he punctuates with firm emphasis; and being able to slide smoothly from pianissimo to fortissimo gives him a chance to shade his harmonies, emphasize or deemphasize rhythms, and swing effortlessly. From the album notes by the noted
jazz writer Philip Elwood. Selections include It’s Been So Long

Jazz Ambassador Scott Robinson Plays the
Compositions of Louis Armstrong
Great American Composers Series, Volume 1
In the early 1990s and during his State Department Jazz Ambassador’s tour of
eleven West African countries in 2001, Scott began to reflect on the fact that Louis
Armstrong had either written or co-written a lot of great music, much of which
is seldom performed. The sublime pleasure of this album, and what provides it
such artistic distinction, is the creative imagination that
Scott Robinson applies in uniquely arranging Armstrong’s great tunes and performing them on an impressive variety of instruments in ways never before heard. If Armstrong’s instrumental
gifts as a virtuoso trumpeter are sometimes overlooked, his compositional talents are even more so. Many of his
nearly five decades of recordings are as startling, even avant-garde, today as when they were made. Armstrong
was and is king of American music. Yet few of us realize the immensity of his accomplishment. Scott’s genius
may help you to rectify this omission. In this project Scott Robinson performs on Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Bass
Sax, Echo Cornet, Trombonium, C-Melody Sax, Double Bell Euphonium, F Mezzo-Soprano Sax and Ophicleide
and is joined by Larry Ham, Mark Shane, Mike LeDonne, Klaus Suonsaari, Pat O’Leary and the African
drummers Indigenafrica. Among the 14 Armstrong selections are Potato Head Blues, Lazy ‘Sippi Steamer Going
Home, Irish Black Bottom, Gutbucket Blues, Cornet Chop Suey and Yes! I’m in the Barrel. ARCD 19275
The Statesmen of Jazz: a Multitude of Stars
A Double CD for the Price of One
“Not since the heyday of Jazz at the Philharmonic has there been a jazz talent
pool – indeed, a multitude of stars – to compare with the thirty here assembled
under the banner of the Statesmen of Jazz (a non-profit corporation dedicated to
preserving the heritage of jazz through performances and clinics by master musicians), and this marvelous cast, folks, with Clark Terry as its musical director,
ain’t even all the Statesmen (and women)!
Consider: Trumpets/Cornets: Clark Terry, Joe Wilder, Warren Vaché, Ed
Polcer, Don Sickler Trombones: Benny Powell, George Masso, Wycliffe Gordon • Clarinets: Buddy
DeFranco, Kenny Davern, Ken Peplowski (doubling alto) • Tenors: Frank Wess, Red Holloway,
Houston Person, Bob Kindred • Pianists: Jane Jarvis, Norman Simmons, Derek Smith, Johnny Varro
• Guitarist: Bucky Pizzarelli • Violinist: (and vocalist) Johnny Frigo • Bassists: Keter Betts, Bob
Cranshaw, Earl May, Jay Leonhart • Drummers: Louie Bellson, Eddie Locke, Jackie Williams, Dennis
Mackrel • Singer: Carrie Smith. That adds up to quite a slice of living history; one could write a book about
all the connections this cast represents: Armstrong, Ellington, Basie, Goodman, the Dorseys, Hawkins, Carter,
Eldridge, Parker, Gillespie, Condon...and on and on. There are no stylistic boundaries or guidelines prescribed
for the Statesmen – each member can and will function as leader and call his or her own shots. But there is, of
course, a shared language here – the language of mature jazz, and while there were some sketch arrangements
involved in these sessions, their ad hoc nature brought this shared heritage to the fore, and even such a veteran
observer of the great music we call jazz as the undersigned had to marvel, more than once or twice, at the many
ways in which experienced and compatible musicians can come together and create coherent and communicative art within a limited span of time. As a Peggy Lee classic puts it, these cats KNOW.” From the CD notes by
Dan Morgenstern, Director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. In all, 28 selections are performed on this double CD including such as Top and Bottom, Backwater Blues, Just an Old Manuscript, Shall We
Dance, Cherry, Corner Pocket, Love Me or Leave Me, Fascinating Rhythm, My Shining Hour, Isn’t It Romantic? ,
I’m Growing Young With You, Rockin’ Chair and Bags’ Groove. SOJCD 202

Ralph Sutton: Wondrous Piano: The Private Family
Recordings – 1961 • Arbors Historical Series, Volume 4
“The master tapes to this session have been locked away for the past 42 years
in the family archives of Barbara Sutton Curtis, Ralph Sutton’s sister. Most of his
selections are tunes he had either never recorded or were only recorded once.
Barbara, who had been listening to Ralph since the very beginning, feels that
these are among the happiest, most swinging things she has ever heard him play.
And after hearing this CD I think you’ll agree. What a talent Ralph was! He
played wondrous piano and he is sadly missed.” Hal Curtis, Ralph’s brother-inlaw. On drums is Hugh Cregg, Huey Lewis’ father. Among the 15 selections are
At Sundown, Cattin’ on the Keys, Hobson Street Blues, Eccentric, Avalon and LuLu’s Back in Town. ARCD 19297
The Kenny Davern Quartet at the Mill Hill Playhouse:
Celebrating 50 Years of Recording with James Chirillo,
Greg Cohen and Tony DeNicola*
Kenny Davern, an icon of jazz clarinet, celebrates his fiftieth year of jazz recording with a swinging album of some of his favorite tunes performed with three of
his favorite musicians, James Chirillo, Greg Cohen and Tony DeNicola. For
the occasion he chose the historic Mill Hill Playhouse in Trenton, New Jersey,
noted for its fine acoustics, and the atmosphere was relaxed, permitting the music
to flow and the musicians to stretch out. The result is one of Kenny’s finest performances in recent years - hot
jazz from start to finish. Selections include Tight Like That, I Want to Be Happy, Wabash Blues, My Gal Sal and
five more. ARCD 19296

The Music of Bob Haggart: Featuring his Classic ‘Porgy

Under the Musical Direction of Randy Sandke*
“To Bob Haggart, that most modest of greatly gifted men, arranging (or rather, recasting)
some of George Gershwin’s greatest themes from Porgy and Bess in l958 was ‘by far the
best writing I ever did.’ When you hear this wonderful score, brought back to life here
by an equally stellar cast, abetted by some dedicated behind-the-scenes detective work
and archival restoration, you will agree that Bob Haggart more than earned his bragging
rights. It was evident from the start of the sessions that the musicians were committed
to doing their very best for Bob Haggart’s fine music. For everyone involved, it was a labor of love--for a master musician
and fine gentleman. At last, Bob Haggart’s Porgy and Bess is no longer an unknown masterpiece.” Dan Morgenstern,

Celebrating Bix! The Bix Beiderbecke Centennial All
Stars Celebrate His 100th Birthday*
“Musicians today are still in awe of Bix Beiderbecke. They still learn from him
and in some strange way, across the eight intervening decades, they still connect with the man, love him and want to be his friend. In celebration of Bix’s
100th birthday, this CD presents his leads and solos as the focal point of all the
pieces, scored for a variety of instruments from Dick Hyman’s solo piano to 3
cornets, 3 C- melody saxes, 3 clarinets, a brass choir, and a brass and woodwind
group. The purpose is to give the listener an idea of how all sorts of instrumentalists and arrangers absorbed Bix’s influence and to capture the harmonic richness that underlies all of Bix’s playing, with plenty of room for improvisation.” Doug LaPasta, Dan Levinson,
David White, Producers. An outstanding collection of jazz stars celebrate the one-hundredth birthday of Bix
Beiderbecke, one of the most influential musicians in the entire history of jazz, born March 10, 1903, and help
answer the question as to why this musician still retains the power to inspire us 72 years after his death. Among
the jazz stars heard on this CD are Randy Sandke, Randy Reinhart, Jon-Erik Kellso, Dan Barrett, Howard
Alden, Mike Peters, Vince Giordano, Greg Cohen, Mark Shane, Scott Robinson, Jack Stuckey, Dick
Hyman, Harvey Tibbs, Pete Martinez, Matt Munisteri and Peter Ecklund, with vocals by Barbara Rosene,
James Langton and The Manhattan Rhythm Kings. The 19 selections include, At the Jazz Band Ball, Deep
Harlem, Riverboat Shuffle, Davenport Blues, Jazz Me Blues, I Need Some Pettin’, I’m Coming Virginia, Clementine,
Singin’ the Blues and Borneo. ARCD 19271 * Joe Klee’s Record of the Year 2003 in The Mississippi Rag. Selected by George Kanzler on

Wein, Women and Song and more:
George Wein Plays and Sings
“As a kid of six or seven years old, I used to sing popular songs with my mother playing the piano....I soon gave up vocalizing for the more instrumental approach to the
music, which became my life. I never gave up the thought that I could actually sing
a song that people might like. George Frazier’s album notes will tell you the story of
how I happened to make a vocal album for Atlantic Records....Ruby Braff, Sammy
Margolis and Bobby Hackett play brilliantly and the trumpet work of Warren Vaché
Jr. with Howard Alden shines throughout.” George Wein, producer of the Newport
Jazz Festival, the JVC Jazz Festival and numerous festivals all over the world as CEO of
Festival Productions, Inc., as well as an accomplished pianist, record producer and entrepreneur. Among the 21 classic
standards are All Too Soon, Pennies From Heaven, Back in Your Own Backyard, I’m Through With Love, I Married an
Angel, Did I Remember?, Please, Once in a While. ARCD 19268 (CD only)
The Kings of Jazz Featuring Kenny Davern: Live in
Concert, 1974 • Arbors Historical Series, Volume 3*

performances by the Kings of Jazz, a group hand-picked by Pee Wee Erwin not
only for their outstanding ability as soloists but also for their excellent ensemble
playing. It also gives us the chance to hear Kenny Davern at the peak of his
powers on soprano saxophone, an instrument that lamentedly he no longer
plays, but in performances that he considers some of his best ever on record. The
Kings are Pee Wee Erwin, Bernie Privin, Ed Hubble, Johnny Mince, Kenny
Davern, Dick Hyman, Major Holley and Cliff Leeman. Selections include Royal Garden Blues, Wild Man
Blues, Rosetta, Black and Tan Fantasy, Oh Sister Ain’t That Hot?, Savoy Blues, Fingerbuster, Indiana and six more.

The Piano Giants at Bob Haggart’s 80th Birthday Party:
Dick Hyman, Derek Smith and Ralph Sutton
Arbors Piano Series, Volume 11
“Recorded at the first of Arbors’ memorable March of Jazz parties, in tribute to Bob
Haggart on his 80th birthday, each of these three peerless participating pianists is a stylist, but each also knows how to adapt to the demands of the duo.... This memento of a
truly memorable piano party is dedicated to the three great gentlemen performing there
who have left us, Hag, Milt and Ralph, but who would want us to remember them on
the happy kind of note they brought to this and so many other joyful gatherings.” From
the album notes by Dan Morgenstern, Director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. Three giants of jazz
piano performing at Bob Haggart’s 80th birthday party as soloists and in various duet combinations produce a performance
that each has called one of his finest on record, performing such selections as Love for Sale, In a Mist, I’m Through With
Love, Honeysuckle Rose, Fascinating Rhythm, The Jitterbug Waltz and 7 more. ARCD 19266 (CD only)
The All Stars at Bob Haggart’s 80th Birthday Party*
The 1994 March of Jazz was the first in what has become one of the foremost annual
jazz events, combining the best elements of the festival and party genres, and it was the
first in a series of birthday tributes to senior jazz greats. There could hardly have been
a better choice than Bob Haggart and this 2-CD set of musical highlights celebrates the
80th birthday of the legendary bassist, arranger and composer. Celebrating with Bob
were a hand picked group of his musical friends and associates over the years including
such first magnitude stars as Yank Lawson, Ruby Braff
Braff, Flip Phillips, Dick Hyman,
Ralph Sutton, Milt Hinton and George Van Eps, who were joined by eighteen other
all stars. The musical results are an outstanding 147 minutes of the finest in jazz. Album
notes are by Dan Morgenstern, Director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. Selections include Oh,

An Intimate Evening With Dave McKenna *
Arbors Piano Series, Volume 10
“Dave
Dave McKenna again shows his understated technique, as well as his love of melody
from which he seldom strays too far. The audience at the concert was filled with musicians, something which usually happens at his appearances. They always come to
hear his wonderful way of phrasing; how he often re-writes the song without losing the
melody; his many medleys (he perhaps knows more medleys than any other living pianist
today); his marvelous left hand, always unpredictable, ranging from single notes, through
full chords and stride and everything in between. Some of the songs he plays here he
has recorded before but it really doesn’t matter because every time Dave plays a song it is
totally different. A change in keys, tempo and phrasing, all of which makes it very exciting to hear Dave play.” From the
album notes by Producer, Gunnar Jacobsen, former President of the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors.
Selections include Fidgety Feet, Tea for Two, It’s the Last Dance and three extended medleys. ARCD 19264 (CD only)
* “Having listened to the recording often, I find Mr. McKenna lifts me above the turmoil of global news to a touch of hope for the human condition.” Nat

Ruby Braff and Dick Hyman: America, The Beautiful •
Arbors Historical Series, Volume 5
“Ruby is one of those few people who could solo with a pipe organ, who could
improvise with such an unusual instrumental background. It requires a very
special ability - flexibility, ingenuity, and invention. Ruby, of course, is his own
man. Like his idol, Louis Armstrong, he commands the center of attention, even if
the background is something as odd as a theatre organ. The tonal colors of a pipe
organ are its great glory. I love the rustling string sound and spatial character of
the solo elements. Above all, I’m stimulated by being able to orchestrate on the
spot. And once you launch into a bright swinging tempo with the instrument
sounding perhaps a beat behind the fingers, the sensation is like leading a herd of galloping elephants. You don’t
dare look back.” Dick Hyman, who performs on the Wurlitzer Theatre Organ. Selections, in addition to a classic
rendering of America, The Beautiful
Beautiful, include When It’s Sleepy Time Down South, As Long As I Live, When I Fall in
Love, Louisiana, High Society, I Ain’t Got Nobody, This Is All I Ask and eight others. ARCD 19269
John Sheridan And His Dream Band:

Ogilvie, Ron Hockett, Reuben Ristrom, Phil Flanigan, Ed Metz Jr. and Rebecca
Kilgore swing away in this third outing of the group in a collection of sixteen familiar
and not-so-familiar tunes including Stop, Look and Listen, Indian Summer, I Love My

Love and A Handful of Stars. ARCD 19262 (CD only)
John Allred and Wycliffe Gordon: Head to Head*
“Still in their 30s, John Allred and Wycliffe Gordon may just be the next great trombone team. They combine youth and experience to bring both a fresh eye to the music
and a healthy respect for the mainstream jazz tradition. The melodies may be familiar,
but the performances are continually challenging, exciting and deeply felt. Once you’ve
listened to this CD once, the best thing to do is go back and listen to it again, all the
way from the start. This time, notice that extra something that only the finest musicians
can give their music.... ‘It’s about playing from the heart, playing with real feeling,’ says
Allred. ‘You can’t teach someone to play with soul.’ “ From the album notes by Matt
Schudel, jazz writer for the (Fort-Lauderdale) South Florida Sun-Sentinel
Sun-Sentinel. Performing
with Allred and Gordon are John Sheridan, Charlie Silva and Ed Metz Jr. on such selections as The Preacher, West End

The Ruby Braff Quartet: Watch What Happens •
Featuring Dick Hyman, Howard Alden and Jake Hanna *
“The Ruby Braff song book by now reaches out across dozens of CDs. We’re
lucky that he lived through a classic age and was able to bring forward its colors
to us, but luckier still that he lived in an age where beautiful sounds are recorded
with a fidelity and life that have never been known before. His embellishments
are delicate and subtle and few jazz musicians have benefitted more from modern
studio techniques. His, more than that of any other soloist, is chamber jazz.”
Steve Voce, who has presented his own weekly radio program, Jazz Panorama
on BBC for 33 years and has written a stimulating and controversial monthly
column in Jazz Journal International for 46 years. Joined by Dick Hyman, Howard Alden and Jake Hanna,

Johnny Frigo’s DNA Exposed!
“To me Johnny Frigo is a bit of a miracle. Here he is, an octogenarian - he’ll be 85 in
December 2001- he still plays violin technically perfectly and with undiminished energy,
enthusiasm and inventiveness - at an age when most fiddlers, and musicians in general,
have long ago hung up their instruments in the nearest closet. Indeed, when Johnny
plays with other (almost always much younger) musicians, it is he who galvanizes the
group, who never lets their energy flag, who always picks the next tune, who leads the
background riffing, and who never wants to stop playing.” Gunther Schuller, both
a classical and jazz musician, musicologist, educator, music publisher, composer and
conductor and the author of Early Jazz: Its Roots and Early Development (Oxford) and
The Swing Era: The Development of Jazz, 1930-1945 (Oxford). Performing with Johnny Frigo are Bill Charlap, Frank
Vignola, Bucky Pizzarelli, Nicki Parrott and Joe Ascione on I Concentrate on You, Poor Butterfly, Cheek to Cheek,
Crystal Silence, What’ll I Do? and eight others. ARCD 19258 (CD only)
Chuck Redd: All This and Heaven Too
“Timeless music! An album to prove wrong those who say, “They don’t make ‘em like
that anymore.” Chip Deffaa, the jazz critic of The New York Post for 15 years and author
of numerous books about jazz.....”Chuck Redd’s lightly swinging vibes interact beautifully with the bass of George Mraz, Gene Bertoncini’s guitar and the clarinet and tenor
of Ken Peplowski. It is a superb grouping, with a dancing feel to it, well balanced and
the tunes are well chosen and varied. It is an intimate group, yet it pulsates with life and
the joy of playing. Chuck Redd should be very proud of this CD!” Marion McPartland.
Selections include How About You?, More Than You Know, Indian Summer, All This and
Heaven Too, Once Is Not Enough and six others. ARCD 19257 (CD only)
Rebecca Kilgore and Dave Frishberg: The Starlit Hour
Rebecca Kilgore is the real thing. She swings all right, without noticeable effort, which is
what swing is about - think not just of Ella Fitzgerald and Maxine Sullivan but of instrumentalists such as Johnny Hodges, Bobby Hackett and Zoot Sims. Her pitch is so sure
that you never find yourself thinking about it; it never becomes an issue, the way it does
with singers whose intonation is less certain. This is surely a natural gift, along with her
good time and good ear. Appearing with Dave Frishberg, best known now as a singersongwriter, but present here in his secret identity of accompanist and solo pianist, they
were recorded live on the final night of their longstanding gig at the Heathman Hotel in
Portland, Oregon. From the album notes by Francis Davis, a Contributing Editor of The
Atlantic Monthly and noted writer about jazz. Selections include I Hear Music, Memphis in June, Cry Me a River, The Starlit
Hour, Thanks for the Memories and 14 more. ARCD 19255 (CD only)
Bucky Pizzarelli: One Morning in May
Solo 7-String Guitar, Volume 2
A second masterpiece by Bucky Pizzarelli exploring classic jazz guitar. A must addition
for any jazz album collection. “Jazz guitarists come and go, usually in a flurry of flying
fingers, but Bucky Pizzarelli has been with us for nearly six decades. A meticulous
craftsman and elegant stylist, Pizzarelli is a living link to such guitar pioneers as Django
Reinhardt, George Van Eps, and George Barnes; there’s not a standard or swing tune
his seven-string instrument hasn’t spun into pure gold.” The New Yorker, December 18,
2000. Selections include Laura, One Morning in May, A Blues Serenade, Candle Lights,
Lush Life, Warm Valley, Autumn Nocturne, Someone to Watch Over Me, This Nearly Was
Mine and twelve more. ARCD 19254 (CD only)
Skitch Henderson: Swinging With Strings
A rare recorded performance on piano by the celebrated orchestra leader and Pops conductor with his Fiddler’s Four of rhythm and improvisation, Skitch, Bucky Pizzarelli,
Gene Bertoncini and Peter Appleyard, plus Nicki Parrott, Joe Ascione and a swinging string section. They perform My Gal Sal, Easy Living, C Jam Blues, If I Had You,
Sophisticated Lady, Lady Be Good, Lover Man and nine others. ARCD 19252 (CD only)

The George Masso Tentet: At Long Last Love
Featuring Dick Johnson and Lou Colombo
“The musicians must have really enjoyed playing these brilliant charts and they stand as
a shining lesson for anyone interested in the arranger’s craft. Masso’s work fits snugly
into the category bounded by the John Kirby band at one end and by the Marty Paich
Dektette at the other. In his settings for the horns he shows the foresight of an Al Cohn
or a Gerry Mulligan in his awareness of how best to catapult a man into his solo.”
Steve Voce, jazz broadcaster for the BBC and columnist for Jazz Journal International
for more than forty-five years. “I love combinations of sounds. This blend of the trombones and the baritone sax with the baritone playing the role of the fourth trombone
is a dream that I’ve had for quite a while.”George Masso. With Dick Johnson, Lou Colombo, Mark Phaneuf, Artie
Mentanaro, Dick Whaley, David Masso, John Wheatley, Marshall Wood and Artie Cabral performing At Long Last

Dick Hyman and John Sheridan: Forgotten Dreams
Archives of Novelty Piano (1920’s - 1930’s)
“Novelty Piano.” These beautiful, often haunting, piano pieces performed by Dick Hyman and
John Sheridan come to us like a forgotten dream we may struggle to recall. Both are veteran sages
who have been drawn together over and over to perform dual piano programs, and their abilities
to play two pianos as one have been steadily refined over a period of almost fifteen years. Much of
the music on this CD is laced with a bittersweet flavor which will charm the listener, and, while all
selections are period pieces, all have upon renewed listening a freshness that is timeless. From the
album notes by Jim Cullum, the proprietor of the famous San Antonio restaurant, The Landing,
which is the home of his renowned Jim Cullum Jazz Band and the site of the weekly PBS radio show
Riverwalk, Live From The Landing. Selections include Echo of Spring, Morning Air, Finger Buster, In the Dark

that one of my life’s dreams came true.” Producer, Gunnar A. Jacobsen. Augmenting

Ruby Braff in peak form aided and abetted by Bill Charlap, Tommy Newsom, Bucky Pizzarelli,
John Beal and Tony DeNicola. “The entire session and indeed, the ongoing career of Ruby Braff
are also arguments for the continued validity of the basic tenets of jazz: the balance of solos and
ensembles, of improvisation and playing the written melody, of group dynamics and interplay.
And while all five supporting players are truly par excellence, it’s the leader who himself propels
their collective efforts to greatness, and, in the process, shows us all who’s king of the forest.” Will

eschewing the carefully charted courses of the four-horn ensembles he has previously led
on Arbors Jazz releases by The Johnny Varro Swing Seven, here he fronts what could have

Chuck Hedges: Just For Fun
“Ever since hearing the 1993 Arbors release of No Greater Love (ARCD 19121) and
reinforced by recordings for the Delmark label and live performances at the MontreuxDetroit Jazz Festival, this writer has remained firmly convinced that Chuck Hedges is
likely one of the greatest living clarinetist active on the American jazz scene. His fluent
dexterity, wealth of ideas and unflappable swing make him a target for others to shoot
for, but the loft is quite high indeed. For all the years plying his trade on a brand of
Dixie-to-swing that personifies the core values of jazz, it is unbelievable to note that
Chuck Hedges has made no more than a handful of recordings. That Arbors has afforded him another opportunity to document his music elevates this CD to major event
status.” Michel G. Nastos, who writes for The All Music Guide and Cadence Magazine and hosts a jazz show on WEMU,
89.1 FM, Ypsilanti, MI. Chuck performs with Eddie Higgins, Paul Keller and Ed Metz Jr. selections Night and Day, Old

“Good music never goes out of fashion as this concert of nearly thirty years ago, available for the first time, proves. The irreplaceable Eddie Condon was a man, who with the
right guys, could make it happen for both the musicians and the audience as he did that
night in Syracuse. We`ll not see his like again. Thank you Eddie for your integrity and
taste, all the music and all opportunities you tenaciously pursued to bring jazz to a wider

Eddie Higgins: Time on My Hands
Arbors Piano Series, Volume 6
“Although the year 2000 marks my 50th year as a professional and I have been recording since 1957, I’ve never made an entirely solo album. Playing solo piano presents both
challenges and opportunities. Obviously, there’s no place to hide: you’re the rhythm
section, the soloist and the arranger all rolled into one, so every note counts. On the
other hand, the freedom is complete: if you feel like a change of key, tempo or meter
(or even of song!) it’s up to you without having to explain anything to anybody.” Eddie
Higgins. He performs Can’t Get Out of This Mood, I Hadn’t Anyone Till You, Lucky to

Dan Barrett and His Jazz Bears Featuring Rebecca
Kilgore • Being a Bear: Jazz For The Whole Family *
“There is so much that I love about this recording: the warmth, the heart, the
buoyancy. And the fact that it is jazz that adults can enjoy right along with the
very youngest members of our society. I know that last statement to be true
because I’ve ‘test marketed’ this recording with my nephew Max Deffaa. He’s
not yet three years old, but he can clearly appreciate Dan Barrett and company’s
cheerfully swingin’ renditions.” Chip Deffaa is the jazz critic of the New York Post
and author of eight books on jazz subjects. Performing with Dan Barrett and
Rebecca Kilgore are Spanky Davis, Jim Galloway, Scott Robinson, John
Sheridan, Paul Keller and Jeff Hamilton on tunes such as Being a Bear, The Jam Song, The Music Goes Round
and Round, This Old Man, Sing, Sing, Sing, Swingin’ in the Dell, Rhythm in My Nursery Rhymes and 8 more classics for children as well as adults. ARCD 19228 (CD only)

Manhattan Swing: A Visit With The Duke*
“When we are playing together as a trio, Bucky and John and I will occasionally play an
entire set of Ellington-Strayhorn songs. The set goes on and on, gently winding through
the famous and not as famous compositions of these two brilliant composers. Very often
a quiet comes over the audience as the songs roll along, and soon you’d think you were
at a service in church. And we actually are, honoring the Archangel of American music,
Duke Ellington.” Jay Leonhart. Selections include Isfahan, Passion Flower, All Too Soon,

Daryl Sherman and Dave McKenna: Jubilee *
A joyful, swinging teaming of Daryl Sherman and her home-town idol Dave
McKenna. Getting these marvelously compatible artists together in a studio is
cause enough for celebration but this new CD can justly be called a centennial
bonanza, saluting four distinctive musical giants of the 20th Century: Fred Astaire,
Hoagy Carmichael, Noel Coward and Duke Ellington. “McKenna is a category
unto himself and Daryl is a perfect bridge between the not so dissimilar worlds of
cabaret and jazz, a brilliant interpreter who treats the melody as something to have
fun with.” From the album notes by Will Friedwald, the author of Jazz Singing
and Sinatra! The Song Is You, and co-author with Tony Bennett of The Good Life.
Together with Joe Cohn, Frank Tate and Terry Clarke, they perform Tulip or Turnip, Isn’t This a Lovely Day,

Ruby Braff: The Cape Codfather *
“Of all the assets that a great musician needs, individuality is perhaps the most important. Ruby Braff has that quality in abundance - his playing can never be mistaken
for anyone else’s in the world. All of his skills are evident on this superb new album,
and so too is the consummate artistry of the musicians who are featured alongside
Ruby, including super jazzmen Kenny Davern, Tommy Newsom, John Bunch,
Michael Moore, Howard Alden and Kenny Washington. Ruby has dedicated this
album to the memory of his good friend, reedman Rick Fay, who died just four days
before these recordings were made in March 1999. I’m sure that Rick would have
enjoyed all of the enthralling performances that this CD contains.” John Chilton,
British trumpeter, bandleader and writer about jazz, whose books include The Who’s Who of Jazz
Jazz, and biographies
of Louis Armstrong, Henry Allen, Sidney Bechet, Bob Crosby, Coleman Hawkins, Billie Holiday and Louis Jordan.

Ruby Braff: Music For The Still Of The Night *
“The present set is a collection of 10 standards of the sort Braff has played for years,
but with a difference: Braff considers this the best work he’s yet done for Arbors, which
he in turn considers the best body of work of his career on any label.....He’s an oddity
among jazz musicians, one whom any composer would want to hear play his songs. He
seems to respect the material as much as the manner. And that makes him that rarest
of all artists, a jazz musician in whose style melody and improvisation coexist as equal
partners.” John McDonough, esteemed jazz critic who writes for Down Beat and The
Wall Street Journal. Performing with Ruby are John Bunch, Howard Alden, Michael
Moore and Kenny Washington on selections Thinking of You, Willow Weep For Me,

coming from his right.” Ted des Plantes, whose articles appear frequently in the
Mississippi Rag, from his album notes describing John Sheridan, the brilliant pianist and arranger with Jim Cullum’s Jazz Band, heard on the national Public Radio

Jerry Jerome: Something Borrowed, Something Blue*
(The sequel to Jerry Jerome: Something Old, Something New)
Jerry Jerome is fondly remembered as the jazz tenor man in the first Glenn Miller orchestra and
in the top-of-the-line big bands of Red Norvo, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw in the late ‘30s and
early ‘40s, but that is only part of the story. To the great pleasure and wonderment of all, Jerry
was still going strong and, in many ways, playing better than ever as so eloquently attested by the
Something Blue portion of this 2-CD set, made shortly before his 89th birthday with, Tommy
Newsom, Lou Colombo, John Allred, Dick Hyman, Lynn Roberts, Frank Tate, Bob Leary
and Ed Metz Jr.. In the Something Borrowed CD, Jerry is showcased on a treasure trove of rare
recordings spanning the period from 1939 to 1964 in the company of some of the outstanding musicians of the period: Charlie Christian, Teddy Wilson, Bob Haggart, Yank Lawson, Hank Jones, Lawrence Brown, Charlie Shavers,
Johnny Guarnieri, Specs Powell, Derek Smith, Milt Hinton, Arvell Shaw and others. Adding to the enjoyment are Jerry’s spoken
introductions to each group of historic selections making this a unique autobiographical document. Selections on Something Blue include
I Want to Be Happy; Just You, Just Me; These Foolish Things; The More I See You; China Boy; I Thought About You; I Want a Little Girl and We
Mustn’t Say Goodbye plus 4 more. ARCD 19213 (A Double CD) (CD only)

originals.” Loren Schoenberg, jazz historian, tenor saxophonist and big band
leader. Included in the 16 selections are Davenport Blues, A Melody From the Sky,
Singin’ the Blues, The Swan, Saxophone Blues, Isfahan, Yardville, For No Reason At
All in C and Count Your Blessings. ARCD 19212 (CD only)
* Selected by Dan Morgenstern one of his top 5 albums for 2000 in the January/February 2001 issue of JazzTimes. “Mr.

The Pizzarellis, Bucky and John: Contrasts
“A ‘classic duet’ by father Bucky and son John, two masters of the guitar. They are so
simpatico that it’s sometimes hard to tell when one leaves off and the other begins.
Bucky performs with sensitivity and style and John proves that the apple doesn’t fall far
from the tree.” From the album notes by legendary guitarist Tony Mottola. Selections
performed are Three Little Words, Jersey Bounce, Coquette, Contrasts, Test Pilot, Two
Funky People, For Whom the Bell Tolls, My Romance and 8 others. “The playing is crisp,
witty and swings like mad.” Time Magazine, March 22, 1999. ARCD 19209 (CD only)

Ruby Braff: Born to Play*
“No one these days would, I think, dream of comparing Ruby with anybody else. He is
of that handful of horn players past and present whose style is so personal, distinctive and
instantly recognizable, that it can only evoke Ruby Braff himself. His mastery of the cornet’s
cello-like low register, his swift and effortless runs and rising and falling arpeggios (his
uniquely thoughtful virtuosity), his gently staccato accents and his quiet lyricism all conspire
to make Braff inimitable.” From the album notes by Charles Champlin, retired Arts Editor of
the Los Angeles Times. Here heard with Howard Alden, Bucky Pizzarelli, Jon Wheatley,
Michael Moore, Marshall Wood, Jim Gwin and special guest, Kenny Davern, this recording features Avalon, I Want a Little Girl, Jive at Five, I’m Shooting High, plus 3 more and, as a

The Wolverines Jazz Band of Bern,
Switzerland at 40
Featuring Clark Terry and Arvell Shaw with
Frank Capp, Scott Robinson and Duffy
Jackson Jr.
The Wolverines Jazz Band of Bern, Switzerland, this
incredible group of seven of Europe’s most talented
jazzmen, in the year 2001, with undiminished vigor,
celebrated their 40th anniversary. It is all the more
amazing when you consider that its frontline of Hans
Zurbrügg, Beat Uhlmann and Rudolph Knöpfel and
banjo-guitar player, Walter Sterchi, have been with
the band over the entire 40 years of its existence and
that the last personnel change was made more than
25 years ago. Not only does this make this group of
musicians an institution in Bern and unique in the history of jazz but it is also a tribute to the continued vitality of its style of dixieland music. In honor of the occasion, the Wolverines were joined for this live, swinging
program by the legendary Clark Terry and Arvell
Shaw together with Frank Capp, Scott Robinson
and Duffy Jackson Jr. to demonstrate once again in
the words of leader Hans Zurbrügg that “the time of
Dixieland is not yet over.” Selections include Fidgety

describes this CD as “one of the most creative projects I’ve ever
been involved with.” Michael Moore said “Ken and I both like to
play the history of the music. It depends on who you’re playing
with. Songs you’ve played before can feel new, challenging and
wide open.” From the album notes by Ira Gitler, author of Masters

33
is so imaginatively conceived and performed with such
warmth, skill and swing that by the time the performance

to me upon first listening to this superb CD by Engelbert
Wrobel’s Swing Society who make their American debut

best and most innovative Dixie bands you’d ever want to
hear.” Rick Fay, musician, composer, poet and writer,

music interplay. Selections include That Da Da Strain,

Rick Fay: Words Among Reeds*
Rick Fay again picks up pen in one hand and his musical instruments in the other to bring us another uniquely
creative collection of his poetry and music in this sequel
to Sax-o-Poem (19113), with the musical assistance of
Jackie Coon, Dan Barrett, Johnny Varro, Bob Leary,
Bob Haggart and Jeff Hamilton. They accompany his
poetry with such selections as Singin’ the Blues, In the
Cool, Cool Cool of the Evening, Lazy Mood, A String of
Pearls, Blue and Sentimental, Wild Man Blues, Come
Sunday, Don’t Explain, I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My
Sister Kate and 3 others.
“In ‘Words Among the Reeds’ Rick Fay gives us poetic and
musical portraits of himself and eleven of the jazz world’s
brightest stars. Like ‘Sax-o-Poem’, its predecessor, this album
rings true in both words and notes. Rick’s poems set up the
musical performances that follow. Either could stand alone
as the work of a gifted artist; together, the effect is synergistic.
Who Am I? Rick asks in the opener. Rejoice in the creativity
of his responses throughout this wonderful album.” – Owen
Cordle, whose work appears regularly in JazzTimes, Down
