Mid-Coast Charities?

United Mid-Coast Charities was
founded in Camden, Maine in 1942
to serve as a bridge between local
charitable organizations and the
seasonal and full-time residents
of the area who wished to support
them but felt they lacked sufficient
knowledge to make the best
decisions about where to allocate
their donations. UMCC continues
to serve this important function
successfully – its mission broadened
to include all of Knox and Waldo
Counties – 72 years later.
Through research, observation, and referral –
combined with its deep institutional experience
– UMCC identifies appropriate local agencies
with the potential to receive a grant from the
organization. Grant applications are reviewed in
depth by members of UMCC’s Board of Directors.
To qualify for a UMCC grant, agencies must hold
non-profit status, serve the most needy segments of
the population in the two counties, and meet high
standards of administrative & fiscal management.
Why give to United Mid-Coast Charities?
With some charitable organizations, you walk

distributed. How much of it goes to a worthy agency?
How much is earmarked for administrative costs?
United Mid-Coast Charities offers the charitable
donor a significant benefit: the assurance that your
money provides the greatest possible assistance to
the community. UMCC Officers and Directors are
committed to an ongoing screening and evaluation
process that provides the fairest possible
distribution of funds. All contributions are 100
percent distributed. Administrative expenses are
covered by an endowment set up for that purpose.
With a single donation, you can benefit many social
service agencies serving Knox and Waldo Counties
– from Area Interfaith Outreach to Meals on Wheels
and the Waldo County YMCA. See the reverse side
for a complete list of agencies currently receiving
UMCC grants.

Who Benefits?
American Red Cross - Midcoast Chapter
Provides relief in the event of a disaster to midcoast Maine;
CPR and First Aid training, blood services, and health and
safety service equipment.
The Apprenticeshop
A school for traditional boatbuilding and seamanship that
seeks to inspire personal growth through craftsmanship,
community involvement, and traditions of the sea.
Area Interfaith Outreach
Provides food through a food pantry and gives vouchers
for emergency needs including heating oil, electricity,
transportation and limited health needs.
Belfast Area Child Care Services
Provides child care services at two sites in Belfast, plus parent
support groups and education, sponsors the Child Care Food
Program, and gives child care referrals to Waldo County parents.
Belfast Public Health Nursing Association
Direct care services to residents of Waldo County including crisis
management and referral, case management, blood pressure
clinics, and vaccinations, regardless of patient’s ability to pay.
Belfast Soup Kitchen
Offers hot meals, an emergency food assistance program and a
safe environment.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine
Big Brothers Big Sisters helps youth in Waldo, Knox and
Lincoln counties reach their potential through professionally
supported, one-on-one relationships with measurable impact.
Broadreach Family & Community Services
Provides quality educational and support services to families,
including childhood education and intervention, children’s
mental health services, parenting education and literacy training.
Camden Area Christian Food Pantry
A completely volunteer effort that provides food to families
that are in need in our communities.
Camden District Nursing Association
A small community health agency that provides RN home
visits and public health clinics to anyone in need in Camden,
Rockport, Lincolnville, and Hope.
Camp Forest
Provides day and expedition wilderness camping for children
ages 7 though 17, incorporating physical, social, psychiatric
and community educational services.
Coastal Family Hospice Volunteers
Provides education events for the citizens of Knox County;
discussions of end-of-life issues; and volunteer, non-medical,
confidential support to patients and families who are
experiencing the final phase of life.
Coastal Opportunities
Provides day and residential services to assist adults with
developmental disabilities to be self-sufficient and become
participating members in their social and economic community.
Coastal Trans., Inc.
Provides non-emergency transportation to meet the travel
needs of the elderly and disabled, low-income people, and the
general public in Knox, Lincoln, and Sagadahoc Counties.
Community School, Inc.
An alternative high school program helping students who struggle in
the traditional school system to achieve personal and academic goals.
Family Planning Association of Maine-Rockland
Provides primary reproductive health services to women,
teens, and men in midcoast Maine. No one is denied services
because of an inability to pay.
Five Town Communities That Care
A community coalition using a data-driven approach to promote
healthy youth development and to address issues facing youth in the
five towns of Appleton, Camden, Hope, Lincolnville and Rockport.
Game Loft
Provides programs in Belfast that help participants gain leadership
and decision making skills, positive attitudes toward their
community and the future, and bond with peers and caring adults.
Habitat for Humanity of Waldo County
Provides care to poor and needy citizens through affordable
housing and the education of selected families in the skills and
responsibilities of home ownership.
Hospice Volunteers of Waldo County
Provides free, confidential, non-medical support and assistance
to the incurably ill, their families, and the bereaved, and provides
hospice related education and support for hospice volunteers,
the professional community and the community at large.
Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care and Hospice
A provider of home healthcare to anyone with acute or chronic
illness or terminally ill clients in need of medical, spiritual, and
psychological assistance.
Knox County Health Clinic
Provides high quality, low or no cost health and wellness
services to low income uninsured persons. Health education,
mental health and dental health are provided to ensure midcoast residents are able to improve and maintain their health.
Literacy Volunteers of Mid-Coast Maine
Benefits non-readers or low level readers who have made a
commitment to overcome illiteracy. Through free, confidential
tutorial assistance, anyone can learn to read.
Maine Pro Musica
Performs concerts throughout Maine and works with area
students and faculty to increase awareness and understanding
of classical music.
Make-A-Wish Foundation - Maine
Fulfills the wishes of any Maine child who has been diagnosed
with a life-threatening illness.
Meals on Wheels (a Methodist Conference Home program)
Provides hot, nutritious, balanced meals to the home-bound of
our communities thereby helping them to maintain their ability
to live independently in their own homes.
Megunticook Rowing
An educational and community-based rowing program open to
students and adults wishing to pursue rowing for fitness or recreation.
Merryspring Nature Center
Practices, teaches and advocates sound principles of ecology,
conservation, and horticulture in order to protect our natural
environment.
Mid-Coast Habitat for Humanity
Builds and helps finance houses that are simple, decent and
affordable for low income working families in midcoast Maine
that could not otherwise afford to own their own homes.
MONEY (More Opportunities for Neighborhood Youth)
Assists youth of the region with athletic education by providing
scholarships.
Toy Library
New Hope for Women
Provides services to all people affected by domestic and dating
violence. Our commitment is equally divided between direct
services and prevention services.
Partners for Enrichment
Supports arts, science and technology enrichment programs for
elementary school students in Hope, Appleton and Lincolnville.
Penobscot Bay YMCA/Teen Center
The Y is committed to strengthening community through
youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility
and ensures that everyone, regardless of age, income or
background, has the opportunity to learn, thrive and grow.
No one is turned away due to inability to pay.
PENQUIS (RSVP Program)
RSVP is America’s largest volunteer network engaging
adults 55 and over in volunteer service. Penquis RSVP seeks
partnerships with a variety of organizations in Knox, Lincoln
and Waldo Counties in order to offer volunteer positions that
suit many needs and interests.
Peopleplace Cooperative Preschool
Provides a high quality intimate pre-school setting for 75
children during the school year, and 60 in the summer. Ages
range from birth to six years. Provides tuition assistance
through full and partial scholarships.
Restorative Justice Project of the Midcoast
Provides mentoring and support to individuals reentering
the community from county jail to reduce recidivism and to
individuals placed on deferred disposition by the court to
complete their conditions and avoid jail sentences.
Rockland District Nursing Association
Provides nursing care to the residents of Rockland. Serving all
age groups and all infirmities with home visits regardless of
their ability to pay.
Saint Bernard’s Soup Kitchen
Providing noontime meals five times a week to residents of the
midcoast area since 1984.
Station Maine
Practices, shares, and encourages the rise of traditional skills of
the sea, including sailing, rowing, and seamanship.
Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center
The wilderness camp provides learning and leadership opportunities
to become knowledgeable and caring inhabitants of the earth.
Scholarships are awarded to those who are unable to afford tuition.
Teen and Young Parent Program
Educates and advocates for teen parents and their children
through parenting education, information on child development,
mentoring matches, playgroups, social and educational programs.
Toy Library Center
A service program for infants through preschool-age children and their
families, which fosters creative play in a safe, nurturing environment.
Trekkers
Connects at-risk youth with caring adults through the use of
authentic experience, travel, community service, and outdoor
experiential education.
UMaine Hutchinson Center
Funds are used for scholarships for needy students of all ages
in the midcoast region to pursue college educations.
University College at Rockland
Funds are used to support scholarships for first-time college
students who may otherwise be unable to pursue higher
education. Provides access to courses, full degree programs,
and support services from the University of Maine System.
Vinalhaven Fuel Fund
Provides heating assistance (oil, kerosene and wood) for
emergency situations such as accidents, fires and medical
problems. Funds limited to elderly, the ill, and the disabled.
Waldo Community Action Partners
Funds help support the Holiday Basket Project that provides
healthful and festive holiday meals to more than 3,000 people.
Waldo County Home Health and Hospice Services
Direct care services for homebound children, adults, elderly
and the terminally ill. Includes skilled nursing, physical
therapy, medical hospice services and pastoral care.
Waldo County YMCA
Provides children and families in Waldo County with sports
camps, athletics and child care. Scholarships are provided to
families who cannot afford the programs that are offered.
Waterfall Arts
Provides program scholarships to area youth with financial need
to participate in classes, residencies, exhibitions and events.
Youth Arts
Serves to inspire and enrich the K-12 school community and
the entire local community through a series of dynamic and
enriching arts experiences.
