What Makes Necky Different?
Born in the Pacific Northwest, Necky Kayaks
introduced our first kayak in the mid-1970s.
The aim was to create a stable, roomy, comfortable vessel that the average paddler could take
out on the ocean. We did so by adapting a highvolume whitewater design, adding more length
and width and a larger cockpit.
It was the first of many competitive fiberglass
kayaks we would make in the 1970s. By the
1980s we had added composite touring kayaks
and also introduced the first polymer model.
Less expensive than fiberglass designs, it had
the advantage of being virtually indestructible.
Necky became a leader in high performance
touring kayaks and North American kayak
design.
The 1990s saw a Necky-led revolution in
whitewater kayaking, launched by our
introduction of a flat planing hull with very
hard chines, which allowed for maximum
responsiveness in extreme environments.
Today, the innovations are still coming.
Seats that provide maximum control without
sacrificing comfort. Advanced materials that
are significantly stronger, stiffer and lighter
than anything else on the market. Whitewater
hulls reinforced with a patented recoil system
that gives extreme paddlers maximum ‘pop’
from waves. Necky continues to advance the
art of kayaking.
From our fastest composite racing kayak to
our most playful recreational kayak, every Necky
is crafted to optimize the performance of not
only the boat, but the paddler as well.
Our boats embody what we see as a purity of
form and function… the sleek lines and elegant
shapes reflect all that is beautiful and adept
in the liquid world. In doing this, we bring you a
line of performance kayaks that is as unique as
each paddler.

Hand Shaping Versus
Computer Modeling
At Necky we believe that kayaks are a blend of
art, experience and science. Hydrodynamic and
hydrostatic principles govern every design, but it’s
important to realize that even the most sophisticated
computer modeling programs can’t account for every variable of sea kayak
design. Add a human being, some wind and heavy chop, and what was
great theoretically on the computer can be a handful in reality.
This is where the experience of our design team, and hand shaping, are
applied to computer modeling to achieve designs that work in the real
world. By utilizing the computer we can quickly cut a basic shape to our
specs. We then refine by hand and paddle that model in a variety of
conditions which begins the hand shaping, fine tuning process. This is a
tedious, time consuming effort, and often major adjustments are made
to the design by our shapers. After repeated testing within our team and
lateral focus groups, we finalize the design and begin the tooling process.
A kayak is evolved to meet specific design requirements, and as such
there is no ‘perfect’ kayak. Designers balance numerous variables to
achieve the best balance of attributes for a given design intent. That’s
why a Chatham 16 is entirely different from a Looksha 17. We also
believe that the eye and touch of a craftsperson adds soul and beauty
that enhances the overall design.

Designing a kayak is a complex proposition. For every performance element gained, another may be diminished.
Kayak design can be a delicate negotiation which, when done well, minimizes this sort of compromise. Of course the
paddler and the water also have a say in how a boat performs. Each paddler is as distinct and different as our kayaks,
and the water is an ever-changing medium. So a kayak must be built to come alive and respond to the conditions and
possibilities of both.
With that said, there are some basic features to understand before you choose your kayak. Performance comes down
to a few things combined: The shape of the hull (remember that no perfect hull exists, except maybe in theory), the skills
and condition of the paddler and the nature of the water. We suggest you take time to study kayak design: talk to your
dealers, instructors and factory representatives – an informed choice will make you a happier, safer paddler.

NECKY MATERIALS
Necky Kayaks has vast experience in drawing on the inherent qualities of polyethylene and composite materials. Our
careful application of technology creates drier, stronger and lighter boats that perform year after year under the most
grueling conditions. And we don’t rest until we create the best performance platform for each model’s intended use,
resulting in beautifully efficient kayaks of startling durability at a highly affordable price.
PolyLite™ | As a pioneer in the art of rotomolding kayaks, Necky has worked hard to create a
polymer specifically designed for recreational kayak use. Many manufacturers simply add
polyethylene to provide durability and prevent defects. Our Necky PolyLite material optimizes stiffness, durability and
impact resistance while keeping the overall weight of the kayak down. A recreational kayak does not need to weigh a lot
to perform well in the water. Our PolyLite blend also has UV inhibitors mixed into the polyethylene. This addition will help
maintain the life of the kayak despite repeated exposure to the sun.
Linear Select™ | Necky Kayaks’ Linear Select is a unique blend of Superlinear™ polyethylene. This
premium material costs more, but it’s worth it! Why? Bombproof durability! Linear Select is one of
the stiffest resins on the market developed specifically to meet the demands of the most serious whitewater and sea
applications. Linear Select properties allow for excellent consistency in molding and wall thickness in every kayak we
build. In addition, Linear Select has UV inhibitors to protect your kayak against sun damage.
UltraLite Composite™ | Necky Kayaks is one of the first kayak manufacturers to introduce
the concept of a light weight composite kayak at an affordable price. Our UltraLite material is an
epoxy/glass/core sandwich construction that creates a super stiff and tough kayak. With cored construction throughout,
our unique lay up is light weight with virtually no structural weak points. The Necky UltraLites are not only easy on the
pocket book they are easy transport when you are off the water.
Advanced Composite™ | Our Advanced Composite lay-ups are specifically designed to take a
beating in rock gardens, surf poundings, and expedition use. Consulting with experts in both the
aerospace and yacht industries, Necky produces laminates that yield significantly stronger, stiffer and lighter kayaks
far exceeding what’s typical in the industry. Our unique Advanced Composite kayaks feature materials that are carefully
layered in. We also layer an additional core in specific areas to increase the overall stiffness. The result is an extremely
strong kayak that can endure a significant amount of impact. Most of our Advanced Composite kayaks are offered in
both fiberglass and carbon lay ups.
100% Recycled Plastic | Made with 100% post industrial plastic our new recycled kayaks not only
perform well on the water, they are environmentally friendly. Necky Kayaks uses our own plastic
waste and cutouts to produce these unique kayaks. But don’t let the word waste fool you. Our 100% recycled material
actually contains stronger property materials than most recreational kayaks on the market. In addition Necky Kayaks
donates 1% of the gross sales of our recycled boats to Waterkeeper Alliance. Our recycled kayaks help pave the way
toward a better environment tomorrow, and cleaner waterways today.

Seats
At Necky we wanted to design an outfitting system
Most of our kayaks are equipped with either the Extrasport®
Seating System or the Necky touring seat with back band.
that was simple, durable and easily customized to
individual needs. The basic system in our kayaks
comprises of a skeg or rudder system, a comfortable
seating system and thigh bracing. For most users this
standard system can be perfectly adjusted to afford
comfort and boat control for almost any paddler.
Rudders And Skegs
Many people ask “Is a rudder or skeg absolutely
necessary?” Our answer is no, not absolutely. Neither
are matches in your backpack or power steering for
your car. The fact is a rudder or a skeg can be invaluable if you get caught in high winds or strong currents.
A rudder or a skeg can help reduce fatigue and make
a significant difference in your boat’s ability to track.
Necky Rudder with Foot Pedals
When deployed you use the foot
pedals to guide the kayak to the
right or the left. A rudder is used
Rudder
for keeping your boat on track,
especially when weather conditions change. It can help
make your journey safer and more enjoyable.
Retractable Skeg
Our retractable skeg allows you
to adjust the trim of your kayak.
Unlike the rudder, a skeg is not
Retractable Skeg
operated by foot pedals so it does
not help you to turn like a rudder will. However when
deployed even a few inches, it can be advantageous in
high wind conditions and strong currents.
Your Necky skeg incorporates our own Necky Wire™.
This is a highly durable and kink-resistant wire common
to the medical industry. It is unaffected by salt water
and does not stiffen over time. As well, it’s highly
unlikely that Necky Wire™ will ever kink. In testing
we’ve experienced no failures, even when the skeg was
repeatedly slammed against logs or hard rocks jammed
inside the skeg box.
Extrasport® Seating System
The most comfortable seat on the
market, the Extrasport seat uses
a shape-molded EVA foam ultraplush seat pad and backrest up to Extrasport Seating System
4” thick. Its ‘progressive cushioning effect’ makes the
seat soft at first, then becoming more supportive for
all-day paddling. The backrest is adjustable fore
and aft, up and down and has an automatic lumbar
angle adjustment. The angle of the seat pan is also
adjustable. All of these adjustments are conveniently
located so you can adjust it once, or as you go.
®
Necky Seat with Backband
Made of durable molded foam,
this seat pad is designed to
reduce pressure on your sciatic
nerve. This helps prevent most
Necky’s Touring Seat
paddlers’ feet and legs from falling
asleep when paddling longer distances, by improving
blood flow around the gluteus maximus. In addition
the seat pad does not retain water. The touring and
whitewater seat pads also feature a back band with a
forward adjustment system to provide ample lumbar
support, movement and comfort for most body types.
Thigh Braces
Thigh braces allow you to grip the boat with your inner
thighs. This provides greater control of the kayak.
Adjustable Thigh Braces
Standard on many of our sea touring
and whitewater kayaks, these thigh
braces can be adjusted to provide optimal
fit and control.
New! Comfort Fit™ Thigh Braces
Our new Comfort Fit foam thigh braces
are designed to provide the ultimate
comfort while paddling. Durable yet lightweight, these
thigh braces can also be adjusted to provide a snug fit
for almost any leg length.

Hatches
Necky Kayaks offers some of the best hatch systems in
the industry. Our bulkheads are bonded and sealed to
prevent leakage. It is our belief that you should not sacrifice safety when producing kayaks. And, while some
manufactures do not include foam pillars or bulkheads
in their kayaks, all of Necky kayaks come standard with
floatation pillars and/or bulkheads to ensure your boat
will still stay afloat even if gets swamped.
Valley® Hatch
For our Chatham series and
Eliza composite kayaks we
choose to use the popular
Valley hatches. These
Valley Hatch
hatches are the first choice for extreme expedition
use. They are virtually waterproof, tough, and easy
to access.
Neo Hatch™
Cross Lock™ Hatch
The Cross Lock is a unique
strapping and hatch system
used on some of our models.
Cross Lock Hatch
The “X” pattern is achieved
with four straps and one quick release buckle. The
low anchor points of the straps allow for excellent pressure that is evenly distributed around the
hatch cover. Simple, secure, and easy to use!
These hatches are standard on
many of our rec, day touring and
touring models. The Neo Hatch is
Neo Hatch
a proven design that will endure
every stress placed on a kayak hatch without fail. The
neo gasket covers the hatch opening and is backed up
by a hard cover that is strapped in place. This type of
redundancy results in a dry hatch that will not pop off in
rough conditions.

PADDLE WITH THE PROS
The Low Brace Lean Turn
by Alex Matthews
The low brace lean turn is the most basic
and fundamental of moving turns. And it’s
a skill that will come in handy in all types of
water conditions.
The low brace lean turn combines the motions of
a reverse sweep with the support of a low brace to make a smooth and
effective turn. It should be noted that while this stroke does generate a
tight turning radius, it will seriously slow your forward speed, often
stopping you altogether.
The low brace lean turn starts with forward speed and is initiated with
a forward sweep stroke on the opposite side to the lean turn itself. This
means that if you want to turn to the right, you’ll initiate the move with
a forward sweep stroke on the left. With the turn initiated, you’ll then
rotate your upper body as if to take a reverse sweep on your right, and
tilt your boat into this same direction. Unlike the reverse sweep that
is used when the kayak is sitting flat on the water, the primary focus
of your paddle is now to provide bracing support, while its secondary
purpose is to provide turning power. This means that your blade will be
almost flat to the water surface, although it will need a slight amount of
climbing angle so that it stays on the surface without diving, and can be
used to help turn your boat. Climbing angle refers to the leading edge of
your paddle blade being higher than the trailing edge. It’s the same as
spreading jam on toast: picture the knife blade’s angle as it glides over
the bread’s surface, leading edge higher than the trailing edge.
As your boat begins to turn, hang on your low brace and slowly sweep
your bracing ‘reverse sweep’ forward while keeping your boat on edge.
As your boat reaches the end of its turn, your blade should have swept
forward to a point directly out to the side from your hip.
As a final note, it’s important to realize that as your kayak slows down,
the amount of support you’ll get from your brace drops considerably.
This means that you’ll need to flatten out the tilt on your kayak towards
the end of the turn, before you’ve scrubbed all your forward speed, and
support is lost.
