Since Thomas Edison’s electric light bulb started
the first lighting revolution in 1879, there has
been little change to the technology. This is
about to change with the second lighting
revolution: Solid State Lighting.
Solid State Lighting uses Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)
to provide light to be seen, not light to be seen by. The
brightness levels of the newest devices are now viable for
many specific applications and improvements will soon
allow LEDs to compete with the performance and cost
of traditional light sources for general purpose lighting.
The main advantages of LEDs are explained below, but
other benefits include fast start-up, good low-temperature
performance, digital control and low voltage operation.
excellent control for exciting designs
Using the latest drivers and controllers, LEDs provide almost
limitless choice of light; colour, intensity and distribution
beyond anything possible with traditional light sources.
Being typically much smaller, the combination of the
unobtrusiveness of LEDs with the range of colours allows
for dramatic lighting designs, including dynamic and
complex three dimensional effects.
reduced energy consumption
It is frightening to think that lighting consumes
approximately 25% of all electrical energy used today.
Solid state lighting can be as much as 20 times more
efficient than incandescent lights and 5 times more efficient
than fluorescent lighting. LEDs use low DC currents, so
small exterior installations can be powered by solar cells,
using “free” energy. A widespread change to LED lighting
technology will lead to substantial energy savings and other
environmental benefits like saving fossil fuels and reducing
CO2 emission, acid rain and hazardous waste, e.g. mercury.
improved reliability
Unlike light bulbs, LEDs gradually dim over time but don’t
“blow”. Manufacturers specify LED “life” as the time
for the light output to dim to 70% of the initial value,
typically 50,000 hours. In reality, most single colour LEDs
(red, green, blue, etc) should exceed this, with 100,000 to
150,000 hours of use possible if the device operates within
maximum ratings and adequate heatsinking is provided.
Being a newer, less mature technology, the best white
LEDs have a life of around 35,000 hours (four years of
continuous operation).
tough and durable
Being a solid-state device, LEDs are highly resistant to
vibration, making them ideal in applications where it causes
early failure of conventional light sources. With a long life
expectancy, LEDs can be encapsulated into weather-proof
housings for outdoor use.
lowering Maintenance costs
As LEDs deliver years of continuous use, once installed and
working, they should never need replacing. Expensive or
potentially dangerous maintenance work is not required
for solid state lighting systems, making them particularly
suitable in inaccessible or
awkward applications.
All of the above combine to offer a new dimension to
the lighting design world. For its energy saving properties
alone, many governments are investing in solid state
lighting and LED technology research as the industrialised
nations strive to lower electricity consumption and CO2
emission. no other lighting technology offers so much
potential to enhance the quality of our environment
while saving energy at the same time.

Architects, designers and engineers all over the world
illuminate their applications with light solutions. The
recent developments in LED brightness, flexibility and
control capabilities now not only allows the use of
light to illuminate, but, increasingly, to enhance the
environment. The need to reduce energy use within
buildings is also becoming a key factor in the choice of
lighting as well.
In the Swedish city of Malmö, the new 190m high
skyscraper “Turning Torso” towers over the Western
docks, establishing a new, instantly recognisable skyline
for the city. The residential tower is more than an
architectural highlight; it’s an example of state-of-the-art
modern lighting. The lighting concept called not only for
a stylish arrangement suiting the innovative design of
the building, but also requested a cost-effective and low
energy solution.
These LEDs outperformed fluorescent lamps when
comparing energy consumption and lifetime. When
combined with a motion sensor to automatically turn
the lights on and off, energy consumption can be
reduced even further. The greater lifetime and reliability
of the LEDs reduces maintenance and leads to further
cost savings.

Some 16,200 LEDs were used to illuminate each corridor
of the building, removing the need for additional
incandescent or fluorescent light sources. While the light
system achieves 160 lux on the outer side of the 1.6m
wide corridor, it still shows 100 lux on the inner side and
provides the homogeneous illumination essential for
flush light applications.

The use of LED displays to provide people with dynamic
information and messaging has steadily increased
over several years. The capability to display instant,
real-time messages coupled with low power
consumption and low maintenance makes LED signage
a cost effective solution for many applications, such as
travel information, warning announcements, queue
management, gambling, entertainment, retailing, call
centres and advertising.
BacKlight led chains
Osram BACKLight chain reels contain two chains of board mounted LEDs. The BL02 comprises two 4.5m chains of 60 individual LED modules connected by flexible cables.
Each module consists of two PCB mounted LEDs with 4mm mounting holes. The BL04 comprises two 2.4m chains of 30 individual LED modules connected by flexible cables.
Each module consists of four PCB mounted LEDs with 4mm mounting holes. Chains can be separated into any length sub unit and integrated with other colours. Up to two
full chains can be driven in parallel by a 50W driver. Applications include illuminated signs and channel letters.

While sales of neon-, incandescent-, and fluorescentbased signage have remained fairly flat in recent years,
the digital signage market has been growing at 30% per
year and now stands at over US$1 billion. This market
includes three main technologies: LED, LCD and Plasma.
Almost all indoor displays using the latter two, LCD and
Plasma; for outdoor use, LEDs have the advantage in
terms of sunlight readability, robustness and long-life.
Furthermore, their modular, stackable nature allows
overall display size to be limited only by cost and the
space available.
The advent of high-powered red, green and blue
(RGB) LEDs and improvements in switching and control
has lead to an increased use of solid state lighting in
entertainment. A curved LED screen of high-impact
lighting and video effects was used for Massive Attack’s
‘Collected’ 2006 international tour. All possible viewing
angles and beam directions were considered for the
curved screen consisting of 24 evenly spaced supports,
each containing 10 Colour Blocks of LEDs. Run from
software on custom built PCs, the LEDs were controlled
via a USB trigger, songs being sequenced visually to the
music, with all cues triggered live as the band played.

LEDs are now replacing traditional light sources in
Channel Letter Signage on buildings. LED Channel Letter
Lights are supplied in sections with automotive grade,
double-sided, adhesive tape for easy mounting. They
are excellent for retro-fitting, requiring minimal skilled

The future of highway infrastructure is limited by the
availability of space for physical expansion and the
acceptability on environmental grounds. Managing traffic
flow will become increasingly important if congestion on
major road networks is to be avoided as vehicle usage levels
rise. The use of bus lanes and others dedicated to freight
or other users that may vary according to time of day must
increase, but, at the same time, motorways and other major
roads need to be safe. To maximise their capacity, operators

LEDs are the lighting technology of choice for dot matrix
traffic signage due to their superior sunlight readability,
robustness, long life and size flexibility. Variously described
as “Variable Message Signs” (VMS) or “Changeable
Message Signs” (CMS) or “Dynamic Message Signs”
(DMS), roadside or overhead gantry-mounted LED dot
matrix messages instantly warn drivers about the driving
conditions up ahead; reduced speed limits, lane restrictions,
road works, weather and safety information, and can
prevent congestion by suggesting alternative routes where
necessary. Intelligent traffic management also benefits the
motorist by improving road safety and shortening journey
times, which, in turn, reduces vehicle wear, fuel costs and
pollution.
The latest high-powered LED semiconductor materials
can emit light at the correct wavelengths to replace
incandescent bulbs in traffic lights, pedestrian crossing
lights, railway signals, etc; Gallium Nitride (GaN) cyan LEDs
having the “traffic light green” wavelength 505nm, and
Indium Gallium Aluminium Phosphide (InGaAlP) for both
red (630nm) and amber (590nm). The primary benefits
are, again, reliability and energy saving. A typical LED traffic
light will last from five to ten years, where the incandescent
light bulb burns out a least once a year. If all of the 260,000
intersections with traffic signals in the United States used
LEDs, over three billion kilowatt hours of electricity could be
saved yearly: an annual saving of about US$120 million.

LEDs have successful penetrated the automotive lighting
market over the past 15-20 years; their extremely long life
and robustness against vibration initially solving the need to
replace blown bulbs in car dashboards (the second highest
warranty cost incurred by manufacturers at that time).
The use of LED technology on modern vehicles has increased rapidly as the benefits have become clear. The high
brightness and small size make LEDs ideal for places where
traditional light sources are unsuitable. They can be recessed
in surfaces, integrated in modules and even mounted within
pushbutton switches, making them popular in a multitude
of interior applications, from instrument clusters to audio
system backlighting, map lights to tell-tale switch indicators.

The commercialisation of Gallium Nitride (GaN) blue LED in
the late 1990s finally allowed dashboard manufacturers to
replace the blue high beam indicator bulb and make the
first fully solid-state instrument clusters. More recently, blue
LEDs lead to the development of white LEDs, bringing the
possibility of solid-state headlights closer to becoming a
commercial reality.

In the 1990s, the advent of high-brightness (HB) LED technology put LEDs on the outside of the car. With the development of Indium Gallium Aluminium Phosphide (InGaAlP)
semiconductor materials, production of red and amber HB
LEDs lead to their adoption in centre high-mounted stop
lamps and other signalling functions, such as rear brake
lights, turn indicators and tail lamp assemblies. There is a
safety benefit here too; LEDs have a faster speed of response. LEDs light up approximately 250ms sooner than
incandescent bulbs, so in practical terms, the LED brake
lights appear 7 meters, about one car length, sooner on a
car travelling at 100km/h speed.

These compact, high luminance LEDs are more energy efficient than incandescent
lamps and, most halogen lamps. Available in three styles, the high dome offers a

by twelve tiny LED spotlights per headlight. The advantage
over using normal low-beam headlights for daytime running light is the much lower power consumption.

The TCS230 programmable colour light-to-frequency converter combines
configurable silicon photodiodes and a current-to-frequency converter on a
single monolithic CMOS integrated circuit. The output is a square wave and the
frequency directly proportional to light intensity. The full-scale ouput frequency can
be scaled by one of three preset values via two control input pins.
The software in the TCS230EVM consists mainly of two components: firmware
in the BASIC Stamp providing the low-level hardware interface, and a Windows
application to perform colour space conversion, gamma adjustment and user
interface functions.

High powered LEDs are increasingly replacing incandescent
and fluorescent light sources in industrial applications.
Machine vision systems combine digital cameras, lighting
and image processing software to perform inspections
that were traditionally undertaken by human inspectors,
such as precision manufacturing processes, fabrications,
medical and ophthalmic measurement, examining natural
objects and artifacts. They detect defects and improve
quality, operating efficiency and safety of both products
and processes. Currently, LED subject illumination is used in
virtually all machine vision systems; improvements in white
LED technology providing the greatest benefit in these
applications.

The TAOS range of linear sensor arrays consist linear arrays of integrating
photosensing pixels which measure incident light over a user-defined exposure
time and generate a voltage or digital output which represents the light exposure
at each pixel. The analog output may be directly interfaced to an ADC for digital
processing or comparing for black/white thresholding. Applications include contact
image sensing, OCR, edge detection, and object measurement in products such as
copiers, document scanners, and spectroscopy.
A range of Linear Array EVM that facilitate evaluation of TAOS linear sensor arrays
by generating the required drive signals for the on-board array, allowing the user
to quickly evaluate the device in various optical configurations.

With the advent of high intensity LEDs, solid state lighting
can provide an appropriate solution for most applications.
They produce high light intensity stable light at a relatively
low cost and have a typical unit life of between 50,000 to
100,000 hours, perhaps 25 times longer than an standard
incandescent light bulb. In terms of cost/hour, LEDs are far
less expensive than anything else that provides equivalent
stable lighting. With the use of a suitable controller, LEDs
are very easy to strobe, increasing the life and output
intensity.

Due to their monochromatic nature, LEDs are ideal in
situations specifically requiring light without a particular
colour component. Applications where blue light must not
be present include photographic darkrooms, laboratories
handling photo-sensitive chemicals and situations where

luXeon K1 eMitters
The ColourDriver 36 driver has a three channel output suitable for driving up to 12
LEDs per channel, 36 in total. The driver is capable of 0 to 100% dimming and is
fully programmable allowing full colour and colour change control. Preset lighting
modes can be selected using built in DIP switches. A unique thermal feedback
circuit constantly monitors LED temperature ensuring maximum reliability and
protection. The ColourDriver 36 is compliant with Luxeon Power Light Sources and
can be remote mounted up to 30m from the LEDs.
The MicroDriver 16 VariLED driver is suitable for driving up to 16 1W LEDs at
350mA or 8 x 3W LEDs at 700mA. The MicroDriver 16 will operate in ambient
temperatures of up to 40ºC, and beyond this range a thermal shut down circuit
will operate to protect the driver and the connected LEDs. The low profile
enclosure incorporates integral cable grips and terminal cover enabling the unit
to be directly used in ceiling voids or other internal exposed applications. The
MicroDriver 16 has two dimming options using either 0-10V dimming or dimming
with a remote potentiometer.
The MicroDriver LV range is designed to drive up to 3 or 9 LEDs at 350 or 700mA
from low voltage power supplies.
The Luxeon K1 Emitter range are compact high luminance long life LEDs available
with high dome, low dome and funnel lenses. The high dome lens offers a 140
Lambertian curve, the low dome a 110 batwing curve and the funnel lens a 200
side emitting curve.

The Luxeon Star LEDs are a range of high luminance compact light sources
available in a variety of configurations. The Star consists of an emitter mounted
to a square or hexagonal submount. The Star/C includes a connector; the Star/O
option includes PMMA secondary optics to create a tight collimated beam. A
variety of radiation patterns are available including lambertian, batwing and sideemitting patterns making the Luxeon Star suitable for a wide range of applications.
The Luxeon Flood light sources are a range of 12 or 18 Luxeon emitters on a
61.5mm x 65.5mm rectangular PCB. Flood units can be linked together using the
AMP connector and suitable cable, for flexible lighting solutions.
The FHS series offers a complete range of lenses designed for use with the
Lumileds Luxeon LEDs. A software optimized aspheric profile combined with front
shaped micro-lens arrays enable the generation of four different lens models:
Narrow beam, medium beam, wide beam and a special elliptical pattern. The high
collection efficiency reaches 85% of the total flux emitted from the LED.
