Managers Message
As 2012 comes to a close, I look back to the very busy year
we had. Two drinking water test wells were completed and
tested. The results were not exactly what we were hoping to
find, so Stantec Engineering is working on having the water
tested to determine what removal technology will work best
on our system. Watch the web site Board meeting minutes to
see the progress we are making.
The disinfecting systems were changed at Well 1B and Well
2 which converted us from gas chlorine to liquid chlorine, to
increase the safety factor in the Community. NO MORE
COMPRESSED LIQUID CHLORINE IN OUR COMMUNITY! Lew and Jamar are now working on a new “tablet
chlorine” system for Well 1B, which will increase our delivery dosage and save on the overall cost of disinfecting our drinking water.
The Fire Station had major structural problems that were found in late 2011. The repairs were completed by
Dan Huston early in 2012, which made the station available to have the pancake breakfasts and Homeowner
Association annual meetings during the summer. Thanks Dan for the good work!
I also had the privilege of attending most of the Homeowner Association annual meetings. Attending gave me
the opportunity to meet most of you and personally let you know what was happening in the District. I really
enjoy the opportunity and hope the tradition will continue in the coming years.

Plumas Eureka Preservation Society (PEPS) – Fall 2012
Another year is coming to an end all too quickly. The October weather was wonderful
with all the beautiful colors, followed by some snow and rain in November.
PEPS held its annual meeting and Soup’s On Dinner on
October 18, 2012 at Longboards Bar & Grill. Thank you to
Renee Walker for doing this year’s program. Thanks also,
to our members, friends and neighbors for your support in
making PEPS a success. Nancy Bartlett wrote some
cute lyrics for this year’s song “Pine Cones Keep Falling on My
Head”. The program included an overview of the 2012 year’s
activities and the new board for 2013 was voted in. The 2013
officers will be: Scooter Kidwell- President; Shirley Agnos- Vice
President; Sharon Munsen & Nancy Barrett- joint Treasurers;
Janet Grijalva- Corresponding Secretary and Marty HarveyRecording Secretary.
In 2012 PEPS activities began with a plant sale on the Saturday of Memorial Weekend at
the Firehouse on Lundy Lane. The following weekend Pine Needle Pick Up service was
held, collecting pine needles and cones from nearly 40 addresses. The dog waste pick up
bag dispensers were kept supplied so that residents and visitors could pick up after their
pets. The three community gardens and the flower barrels at the mailbox clusters were
planted and maintained. Tim completed the rock pathways on the left side of the Enduring Freedom Garden. And there were some beautiful burgundy sunflowers to been seen
on the right side of the garden. We had several new active members this summer, which
made for a great time as we worked in the gardens.
Renee Walker organized the volunteers to put up the lights, in preparation for the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on November 24th. They enjoyed hot dogs, beer & s’mores
after the lights were up.

FROM THE CHIEF
Greetings all,
I hope everyone had a good summer. We are now into winter and it is time to check your smoke detectors
and replace the batteries. Check your heaters, fireplace flue pipes and chimneys for obstructions and clean
if required. You can help us this snowy season by keeping your driveway, sidewalks and entrances to your
homes clear of snow in the event of an emergency.
We received a matching funds grant from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection this
year for firefighter safety equipment and additional firefighting equipment. The Plumas Eureka Community Auxiliary helped pay for a portion of the matching grant along with other generous donations to purchase fire, rescue and medical equipment. On behalf of the Plumas Eureka Firefighters, we thank the Auxiliary and its members for their generous help, support and contributions to the fire department. Thank
you!
We continue with our struggle to recruit and retain firefighters. Firefighter Kim Roberts retired from the
fire department in April after serving for over 10 ½ years. Fire Captain Randy Dzialo moved to Bishop
after serving for 1 ½ years and Captain Chad Castagnetti moved to the Truckee area after serving for over
13 years. All three of these men served the fire department and community well and they are sorely missed
by all of us. On the brighter side, we have been fortunate enough to pick up three new members to the fire
department. Please welcome Firefighter Steve Munsen who joined the department in June of 2011, Firefighter Melanie Harris who joined in March of this year and Fire Captain William Robinson who came on
board in October of this year. Our goal is to recruit an additional five members to the department. We
have a great fire department, are highly trained and have fun as well. We also have positions available for
non firefighting roles such as station and vehicle maintenance, grant writing, weed abatement inspector,
clerical duties and firefighter support in the event of larger incidents. This is a great opportunity to help
out your community doing something different and exciting. We have something for everyone, young and
old. If you think you might be interested just give me a call and we can talk more about it.
Lastly I want to thank everyone for their continued support of the fire department. We work hard and
strive to make our community safe. Your support makes that happen. As your Chief I am here to serve

Fire Department Training

Our joint training programs for firefighters has continued this Fall with several weekend courses sponsored in addition to our regular weekly drills.
We kicked off the fall season with
our annual fire engine driving and
pumping drill held on Saturday,
September 22. This 5-hour session included an obstacle course
and three pumping stations, with
six local fire departments participating.
Secondly, our annual low-angle rescue class was
held in Graeagle and at Plumas Eureka State Park
October 12-14. It was the first training exercise for
our newly donated wildland fire engine, E9178. It
proudly served as an anchor point for over-the-side
rescue ropes. The Muir Beach VFD in Marin County
donated this engine to us, after they received a donation from the Skywalker Ranch FD. Look for this
to be featured in an upcoming article in the Plumas
News/Portola Reporter on FD donations.
Our newly donated E9178 is a 1986 Type III
engine donated by Muir Beach VFD, replacing
our 41-year old engine that was donated from
San Bernardino County FD.

Fire Department Training Continues

Next a CHP rescue helicopter
visited at the Mill Pond in
Graeagle on Saturday, October
27, and we trained on rescue
hoisting operations. The CHP
helicopters are the only ones
available to us with hoisting
equipment for extrication; such
as we’ve had to do several times
at Plumas Eureka State Park.
Finally, we are coordinating a four-day Volunteer FD Leadership class over two weekends – October 21-22 and December 1-2. This is free, provided via a grant from the
Motorola Foundation. Retired State
Fire Marshal Ronny Coleman is leading the course, and is assisted by instructors from the California State Firefighters Association Volunteer Committee, including Chief Robbie Cassou of
Quincy and myself. Thanks for your
support of our ongoing training programs.

PROJECT SANTA CLAUS
Even though Fran Roudebush who started Project Santa has
moved out of the area, I am pleased to announce that the Project
will go on. So drop off your new games, new toys & new clothes at
the Fire House.
Finally my hair has finally grown back – the style is what is known as “chemo curls”.

FROM YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD GOLF PROFESSIONAL, BRANDON BOWLING
Everyone tells me that you know you
are getting old when time starts going
by very fast (oh, and you start losing
your hair and noticing bald spots on
the back of your head like I now
have!) Well then I know that I am
definitely getting old because this season flew by and the little mirror that
the nice young lady who cut my hair
recently held up to show my neck line
revealed a bald spot on the back of my
head much bigger than I remember…
dang it!!
Even though I am getting older the
good news is that each year here at
Plumas Pines leading up to the completion of this year, my 21 st year at the club, has gotten even more enjoyable and fulfilling. I am so fortunate to be able to raise two fantastic boys with my beautiful wife in such a peaceful and caring community. I am also very fortunate to work at a place I love, with the best staff in the business, for owners who
are wonderful people, and customers that are excited to be here. As I always say, “21 years at the club
and not a day of work yet”.
We had a great season this year. A big thanks to
Mark Callahan, our Golf Course Superintendent,
and his staff for taking the golf course to another
level. I didn’t think it was possible to improve
upon last year, but they did. Great Job Mark! We
are all extremely fortunate to have Sean Conry,
our Executive Chef, and his culinary team at
Longboards Bar & Grill. Sean and his staff have
made dining at Longboards a truly amazing experience. I would put Sean’s team against any restaurant team in the business anywhere in the
world…they are that good! Completing the team
here at Plumas Pines and the reason that I can say
that I have not had a day of work yet, is my amazing golf staff. Judy, Janet, Renee, Kyle and Tug
in the golf shop, Karen in accounting, Tammy and
her housekeeping team along with our hard working snack bar, ambassador, and golf host staff come together each and every day to create an enjoyable
work environment with 100% focus on making sure our guests have the best experience possible.
It is completely my pleasure to call Plumas Eureka Estates and Plumas Pines Golf Resort my home! I
hope everyone has a warm and safe winter and a festive holiday season. I can’t wait to see everyone this
spring. Let’s hope for an early one so that we can tee it up soon!
