The “Badische Philosophy” –
how to run a highly efficient mini-mill
The mini-mill of Badische Stahlwerke GmbH (BSW) in Kehl / Germany is equipped
with two 100 t electric arc furnaces, two ladle furnaces, two five-strand continuous
casting machines and two rolling mills (2-strand wire rod and single strand rebar).
Many mini-mills have very similar equipment and material flow.
But what has made BSW to one of the most efficient mini-mills of the world with an
annual production of more than 2,2 million tgb can be described to the point with the
widely-known “Badische Philosophy”:
The following presentation gives an overview of the main figures of BSW and outlines
the philosophy and strategy of BSW to achieve this outstanding performance on a
sustainable base.
