NATIONAL SOFTBALL CHAMP…Chick Miller of Westfield dons his medal
for being a member of the New Jersey Over 75 Softball League team, the New
Jersey Embers based in West Orange, that won the National Sr. Olympic Softball
title by edging a team from Ohio, 8-7, in Pittsburgh, Pa. on June 6-8. Miller still
plays for the Legg Mason team of the Union County Sr. 60+ Softball League.

Fine Soccer Season

High Jump Event
The Westfield Arsenal U-14 soccer
team finished their season with an
11-4-4 record and took second place
in their final tournament in Ocean
last weekend.
The Arsenal has played together
for six years under the guidance of
various coaches, most recently Alex
Schmidt, also Westfield High School’s
Assistant Varsity Coach. In addition,
Jeff Irving and Kevin McManus, two
parent coaches, have made significant contributions to develop these
players over the years.
The Arsenal played in the MAPS
league for the past two years, which is
a highly competitive program. This
past spring, Coach Schmidt took the
team to the next level of play, which
resulted in a successful season and
solidified the camaraderie amongst
the players.
Adam Wendel, a recent Westfield
High School graduate, competed at
the New Jersey International Meet at
Colts Neck High School on June 11
and placed first with a jump of 6’8”
(2.03m).
This was Wendel’s first meet in
over a year-and-a-half, since being
sidelined with injuries. He had surgery in September on a torn quadriceps and has been rehabbing his leg.
Wendel hopes to be able to clear 7’3”
or more this coming winter indoor
season.

Dwight Stones, who according to
Wendel, “writes my workouts. We
speak on the phone and communicate
through e-mail, but I rarely see him in
person,” has his sights on turning pro
in the winter.
That magic number, 100! So many
golfers want to break 100, but find it
difficult to achieve. I believe with a
little coaching, this achievement is not
difficult. The first thing you must do is
to change the par of the golf course. If
the par is 72, add 18 strokes and make
the par now 90. Now you are trying to
play bogey golf. We have learned from
watching golf on television that bogeys are not good but if you bogey
every hole you will shoot 90.
This leads me to the next idea to
follow when trying to break 100. Giving yourself an extra shot on each
hole will take pressure off of your
long shots. You will need to put your
tee shot in play and then you have two
more shots to get on or around the
green.
For example, you are playing a
360-yard par four. Hitting your tee
shot just 200 yards in play will leave
you 160 yards to the green. Remember, you have two shots to get it on the

CWS Centurions to Compete
In Sweden’s Gothia Cup
The CWS Centurions, a locally
based select soccer team from
Westfield, Scotch Plains and the surrounding area, defines the meaning
of “team.” Comprised of 15-year-old
boys, the team, in two short years, has
forged a strong bond of commitment,
and dedication to each other, their
coaches and the families that cheer
them on. This past season, the CWS
Centurions played in the semifinals
of the NJ State Cup and are now
ranked ninth in the state for their age
group.
The player’s commitment to the
team perfectly mirrors the support,
enthusiasm and camaraderie on the
parent’s sideline. The team spirit of
this collective team (players, coaches
and parents) is such, that this summer, the CWS Centurions will be

don and then on to Sweden for the

WTA Women Singles
Doubles Tennis Title
Mike McGlynn and Irondi Aliche
held off stiff competition to win the
Westfield Tennis Association Men’s
Doubles tennis tournament. The tournament was held at the courts at
Tamaques Park on June 18.
McGlynn and Aliche defeated Rich
Pardo and Ravi Motwani during regular play and in the finals. Rounding out
the competition were the team of Tuyen
Diep and Don Dohm and the team of
John Mancini and Jim Oslislo.

together as a team for six years, recently finished their season on a high note.

green. This type of thinking will relieve some of the pressure and will
help you relax, while you are trying
to hit a shot.
Now that you are on, or close to, the
green, your short game will be very
important. From 30 yards and in is
where you should spend the majority
of your practice if you want to break
100. Make sure you always two-putt
or occasionally one-putt.
Being able to chip or pitch relatively well is also extremely important. Next time you play, keep a second score from 30 yards and closer. If
that score is more than half of your
total score, this is the reason why you
cannot break 100. So if you can put
your tee shot in play, take some pressure off your second shot and have an
efficient short game, you will start to
break 100.

representing 1,500 teams from around
the world. All 16 CWS players and a
majority of the parents will be embarking on this soccer adventure.
