“I don’t like the snow and I
don’t like to ski. 75 is pretty chilly to me.” When I
first heard those lyrics I knew I had found a soul
mate. Jim Morris had voiced my feelings about winter exactly. I know-- it’s winter and we live in central PA. It’s supposed to snow and be cold but that
doesn’t mean I have to like it. And, believe me, I
don’t! Dan has taken me ice fishing once and skiing
once. I have no plans to repeat either of those activities. He did manage to drag me to the Eagles Mere
toboggan slide more than one time but that was
mostly because the kids wanted to do it. Polar Plunge notwithstanding, I just
don’t do cold weather activities. But spring is coming, (please, please, please)
and we have some wonderful events to look forward to that should warm us all
up.
One of the things I have enjoyed most about being part of a Parrothead
club is our support of live music. When we have fundraisers and musical
events, we provide an opportunity for musicians to share their talents and
songs with us and to earn a living or, at least, pursue a hobby they love. I love
live music. Live music brings people together. It can inspire our hearts and
bring us happiness through song. Like most of us Parrotheads, I started out as a
fan of Buffett’s music but that has led to finding all these other musicians who
have a connection to Jimmy’s music. Some play some Buffett music - that is
where most of them started but that’s not where it ends. They also have a catalog of their own music that is often referred to as Trop Rock. Then there are
other artists whose music is far, far from “Trop Rock” but whom we’ve discovered because they play with Buffett or Buffett has covered their music or
mentioned them in a song. In the next couple of months we have the opportunity to see musicians who represent this wide range of music that Parrotheads
have embraced.
First up is Peter Mayer, who we all know as a Coral Reefer, but who
we have come to appreciate as an incredibly talented artist in his own right.
We have enjoyed his annual Christmas show for a number of years and have
also had the privilege of having him do shows featuring his other original music. Now on Friday, March 26th, Peter brings his Beatles tribute, Come To-

gether with Peter Mayer, to the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg. I missed this show in Key West but have the CD,
Goodbye Hello, and love it. I’m of the age where I remember watching the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. I was
pretty young but grew up listening to their music. Over the
years I haven’t liked other artists’ Beatle covers. But Peter’s renditions manage to pay homage to the spirit of the
songs while bringing something new to them. It’s a really
remarkable feat. As an added treat, Tropical Soul will be
opening this show.
Then in April it’s the return of Bill “The Sauce
Boss” Wharton. I’ve got my dancin’ shoes on already. I
love the Blues and Bill’s talent and energy makes for a
show that never disappoints. Bill Wharton is a good example of an artist who isn’t Trop Rock but yet has a fan base
among Parrotheads. Of course, Bill is mentioned in I Will
Play for Gumbo and I thank Buffett for this from the bottom of my heart. I never would have gotten Dan into see

the Sauce Boss that first time except for this fact. Dan
readily admits that when he heard about a musician who
plays the Blues while he cooks on stage, he thought it was
the dumbest sounding thing ever. But, there was that tenuous Buffett connection and it was a club event, so we went.
Bill’s outstanding talent and wonderful music won Dan
over as it has many Parrotheads who probably never
thought they would like a Blues show.
I’m also looking forward to having KD Moore as
the opening act this year. KD could be considered a
“classic” Trop Rocker. He started out playing Buffett and
his original music is infused with that laid-back attitude
and island style. KD is one of my favorites. Besides being
a great player, he’s one of those artists who has so much
fun performing that his joyful vibe spreads through the
audience and gets everyone smiling. He has a lot of wonderful original songs. He doesn’t know it yet but I’m going
to make up his set list to make sure he does his own tunes
and not just covers.
I’m the Captain. I can
do that, right?
Anyway, I’m
excited about all the
great music we’re going to have coming our
way in March and
April. I hope everyone can come out and
join in the fun.
There’s nothing better than sharing great music with
great friends.

“A GOOD WINE IS A WINE THAT TASTES GOOD TO YOU”

Sight, Swirl, Smell, Slurp, Swish, Savor, Swallow, Savor (again) are the 8 S’s of Wine
Tasting. Shiraz, Merlot, Zinfandel, Pinot’s, Chardonnay, Chablis are all types of wine.
Do you know how to pair wine with food? Well, for the past two years several members of our Parrothead group have attended the “Wine & Dine” event at the Silver
Lake Inn in Lewisberry. Usually held on the third Tuesday of each month we gather at
this small quaint restaurant and partake of the grape and indulge in home-cooked
meals. We are served five different wines each paired with a food course starting with
appetizers and ending with dessert. The food is prepared by the restaurant chef,
Pete, and hosted by Rob and Brenda Lane. Rob is a wine-and-food columnist for
Mountain Home Magazine focusing on Finger Lakes New York wine. Recently, Rob and two other wine enthusiasts opened their own winery in Newberrytown, and at a recent Wine & Dine we enjoyed tasting wines from
their winery – Hummingbird Ridge Winery.
We have had meals ranging from surf-and-turf to stew to barbeque, wines from Germany, France, Australia,
and we leave the restaurant counting the days until the next event. Rob educates us on how to taste the wine,
and how the taste is different when eaten with food. The events are also varied – at some events the winemakers from local wineries come and talk about wines; one October was a costumed
event; and we even had
a beer tasting one month.
So whether you are a
wine connoisseur, a wine
diva or know nothing
about wine, check out the
Silver Lake Inn for good
food, good times and
great wine.

HOT ‘N HEAVY
By Dan Hall
What’s that? The Sauce Boss has a new CD coming out? That’s right, you heard it here first! Well
maybe not if you are a frequent visitor to www.sauceboss.com or Bill Wharton’s page on Facebook
but it is true – “Hot ‘N Heavy” will officially be released on March 23.
“Hot ‘N Heavy” is Bill “Sauce Boss” Wharton’s eleventh CD of his own swampy slide guitar blues.
Drummer Justin Headley, and tag team bass players, Robert “Freightrain” Parker, and David
“Biscuit” Miller provide a slammin’ bottom, making this album, by far, the heaviest yet.
TRACK LISTING:
1. Marquis de Swamp
2. Rusty Blues
3. Get Naked and Surf
4. Okra
5. Lonesome Rider
6. That's How It Feels
7. Gonna Be All Right
8. Don’t Know How To Tell You
9. Hot Sauce
10. Crazy Bout Ya Baby
11. Andouille
12. Old Dog Eared Copy
13. Hot ‘n Heavy
14. Chicken In the Gumbo
15. Somewhere Down the Road
The “Marquis de Swamp” says “Welcome to my habitat” over a sonaral bed of frogs, bugs, and who
knows what crawled out of the swamp for this noir party. Wharton threw caution out the window with
this album, as “Get Naked and Surf” suggests. Is “Lonesome Rider” a mid-life crisis or just a fond
remembrance of one of his long motorcycle odysseys? “That’s How It Feels” walks homeless
streets, with the singer speaking of the dark alleys of
existence. Then “Gonna Be All Right” throws it right in the face of despair and shines a light over it
all. “Don’t Know How To Tell You” mellows down into a smooth groove like coming home to Mama.
The title cut is a salacious double entendre with a raucous back beat suitable for lap dancing.
(Count me in for that!) Peppered in amongst the songs are grooves of the gumbo. “Okra”,
“Andouille”, “Hot Sauce”, “Chicken In The Gumbo” give the whole proceedings spice and contrast.
After serving free gumbo to over 165,000 hungry fans, after playing and cooking in homeless shelters all over the country, after twenty years on the road, the Sauce Boss is going for it.
All songs were written and performed by Bill “Sauce Boss” Wharton, who owns the intellectual property rights on each song and has conveyed them to his record company, Burning Disk, Inc. Bass
player Michael Wheeler does the backing vocals on “Old Dog Eared Copy”.
To pre-order this new CD visit the Sauce Boss store at www.sauceboss.com. It is also available at
CD Baby. But what better way could there to pick up your very own copy than by coming to the
show on April 17 at Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg? I’m even willing to bet that Bill
would be more than happy to autograph it for you.
See me at the March meeting, contact me by phone or by email or send up a smoke signal to get
your tickets. Don’t forget that the PHIAP members-only discount expires on March 31!

AMISH
“STUFF”
By Ja ne He ss
Everybody has stuff. Some of us have
more stuff than others. But the kind of stuff
I’m looking for is Club stuff. PHiAP has quite
a collection of banners, decorations, scrapbooks, photos, gift basket makings – all
kinds of stuff. And don’t forget Jakie! (How
can I? He’s residing in our basement!)
If you have any Club stuff I’d like to
know about it. The Club doesn’t mind if you
store it, but as the new Quartermaster, I’d
like to make a complete list of what the Club
owns and where it is so that I know who to
contact when we need it.
If you have any of PHiAP’s prized possessions, please see me at a meeting or
email me at [email protected].

Do you select your friends based on how well your cats
like them?
Does your desire to collect cats intensify during times
of stress?
Do you buy more than 50 pounds of cat litter a month?
Do you scoop out the litter box after each use? Do you
wait at the box with the scoop in your hand?
Do you think it's cute when your cat swings on the
drapes or licks the butter?
Do you admit to non-cat owners how many cats you
really have?
Do you sleep in the same position all night because it
annoys your cats when you move?
Do you kiss your cat on the lips?
Do you feed your cat tidbits from the table with your
fork?
Does your cat sit at the table (or ON the table) when
you eat?
Does your cat sleep on your head? Do you like it?
Do you have more than four opened but rejected cans
of cat food in the refrigerator?
Do you watch bad TV because the cat is sleeping on
the remote?
Did you buy a video tape of fish swimming in an aquarium to entertain your cat?
Will you stand at the open door indefinitely in the
freezing rain while your cat sniffs the door, deciding
whether to go out or come in? Would you rather spend

1. I could have sworn I heard a can opener.
2. Is there something I'm not getting when humans
make noise with their mouths?
3. Why doesn't the government do something
about dogs?
4. I wonder if Morris really liked 9-lives, or did he
have ulterior motives?
5. Hmmmm ... If dogs serve humans, and humans
serve cats, why can't we ever get those stupid dogs to
do anything for us?
6. This looks like a good spot for a nap.
7. Hey - no kidding, I'm sure that's the can opener.
8. Would humans have built a vast and complex
civilization of their own if we cats hadn't given them
a reason to invent sofas and can openers in the first
place?
a night at home with your cat than go out on a bad

• Do you give your cat presents and a stocking at
Christmas? Do you spend more for your cat than you
do for your spouse?
• Do the Christmas cards you send out feature your cat
sitting on Santa's lap? Does your cat sign the card?
• Do you put off making the bed until the cat gets up?
• Does your cat eat out of cut crystal stemware because
you both watched the same commercial on television?
• Do you microwave your cat's food? Prepare it from
scratch?
• Do you climb out of bed over the headboard or footboard, so you won't disturb the sleeping cat?
• At the store, do you pick up the cat food and kitty litter before you pick out anything for yourself?
• Do you cook a special turkey for your cat on holidays?
• Does your cat "insist" on a fancy Sunday breakfast consisting of an omelet made from eggs, milk, and salmon,
halibut, or trout?
• Do you have pictures of your cat in your wallet? Do you
bring them out when your friends share pictures of
their children? (Pollsters claim that 40 percent of cat
owners carry their pet's pictures in their wallets, by
the way)
• When people call to talk to you on the phone, do you
insist that they say a few words to your cat as well?
• Do you accept dates only with those who have a cat? If
so, do you eventually double-date with the cats to see
how they get along?
• When someone new comes to your house, do you introduce your cat, by name, to them?
9. If there's a God, how can He allow neutering?
10. If that really was the can opener, I'll play finicky just
to let them know who's boss!
