COLOR NOTAN PAINTING
Description A color notan painting is a very quick small mass notan painting that consists of
just a few, perhaps four or five, color spots of approximately the right size and
placement. This quick painting helps you work out a major color strategy
quickly. Usually, I will use it to work out what gray to use to best show off my
main color accent. As with a mass notan painting, the contour is not important.
You use this type of mass notan when:
♦ the strongest element of your design strategy is a color harmony rather than
an interesting shape pattern. Create one a monochrome notan painting in
addition to the color notan in order to check out the shapes.
♦ the values in your design are all very close and the main interest is a harmony
of color spots.

CREATING A COLOR NOTAN PAINTING
Materials Paper
Almost any paper will do. The thickest papers are better since they do not
buckle as much. I do not gesso the paper and just use my regular notan sketch
book (Strathmore 400-I medium 80lb (130 g/m) white drawing paper).
Paint
Just use your regular oil paint with no medium
Steps Use the same size as your regular mass notan paintings, and just paint on your
sketch pad. Paint the gray background first very thinly and then add your more
saturated color spots on top of the gray background using slightly thicker paint.

EDGE NOTAN PAINTING
Description The edge notan painting is a special type of mass notan painting that dies not
consist of just flat shapes as the with regular mass notan painting, but instead
has some of the edges between the shapes blended. You can use it to explore
certain types of edges. In particular, it is good for exploring a very slow edge.
By slow edge, I mean an edge that only gradually transitions from one value to
another. A good example of a slow edge is the gradual transition in value in a
large body of water from the water close to you to the water at the horizon. Do
not use this type of notan to explore all your edges, just one or two major slow
ones.

CREATING EDGE NOTANS

Do this:
Avoid this:
In this example the main
masses were established
clearly before creating the
transitional values. No
minor value shapes are
shown.
In this example, the main
values were not established
before
creating
the
transitions. Also, small
focal point details were
added far too early in the
development
of
the
painting. Since they are not
part of the main value
structure, they should be
omitted at the notan stage.
Cautions
♦ Do not put in minor details. It is very easy to get caught in
the trap of seeing something in your scene that interests
you, and depicting it in the notan painting, even though it
plays only a minor role in the value structure of the composition.

STEP-BY-STEP:
CREATING EDGE NOTANS
(CONTINUED)
Unit Five
Step one
Draw a two value notan using flat shapes.
In this procedure, we are creating an
edge notan painting from this painting
by JMW Turner.
Tip
♦ Squint to see the overall average value and to avoid seeing
too many small value shifts.
Step two
Immediately soften the edge using the next higher value ink
brush to create the transition.
Tip
♦ You can also use your finger to help make the transition
Caution
The secret to creating a good edge
notan painting is to use the right ink
and paper. Some combinations work
much better than others. If you use the
wrong combination, the ink dries too
quickly and becomes blotchy, and you
do not get smooth gradations of value.
smoother.
♦ You can create a smoother transition if you create the edge
while the underpainting is still wet (work quickly!).
Step three
Add the third value (if needed by the composition).
Setting expectations
Do not expect to become a master at
this quickly. You need months of
practice in mass notan paintings
before you will be able to do these
edge notan paintings well.

Step four
Immediately soften the edge as before.
