CHIPDRIVE® Time Recording Version
to CHIPDRIVE® Time Recording 7.0
This guide describes how to update your Time Recording software from an older version to version 7.0
and how to import the existing data into the new version.
Note: The instructions are similar when updating CHIPDRIVE ® Time Recording Software version
2.xx to higher versions.

1. Update Clocking Data
Start the old version of Time recording and read, if available, the current data from a PC Time Clock,
or transfer all data from your CHIPDRIVE mobile, using the transport-card, to Time Recording.
2. Create Backup Copy
Make a backup copy of your data.
Proceed as follows:
1. Click on File => Create Backup Copy
2. Accept the default directory or select a different one over "Select or create folder" e.g. C: \ Backup
Note: Remember the location of the backup copy. So you can go back to the collected data in case of
data. For more information, please see the Help in the Time Recording software.

3. Uninstalling the old Time Recording version
Please remember the location of the current data directory, you will to connect to it after the update.
To find out where it is currently located, select "File => Administration => Connect to Existing Data
Directory" (Do NOT close this dialog by clicking "OK" button):
The highlighted entry is the current data directory.
Now you can uninstall the older Version of Time Recording via the Control Panel.
The installation directory of the old Time Recording will not be deleted.
4. Installing the new Time Recording version
Install the new version of the Time Recording. During installation, you will be prompted to enter the
License key.
4.1 Updating the PC-Time Clock Server Service
If you use the PC Time Clock Server service, you must upgrade it too. Proceed as follows:
a) Install the new version of the service Start => All Programs => CHIPDRIVE => Time
Recording 7 => Install PC-Time Clock Server Service.

A command-prompt window opens, in which you will be informed that the installed service is
stopped and uninstalled and the new version is installed. You then get a message that the
service is installed.
Start the service "CHIP DRIVE PC Time Clock Server Service" via Start => Control Panel =>
Administrative Tools => Services
Note: If User Account Control in Windows is active: To uninstall the old and install the new service
using the links shown above, click on them with the right mouse button and select "Run as
administrator".
5. Restoring the configuration of a previous version
To restore the configuration of a previously active older version you will have to copy the files where
the settings were saved to a new directory.
These files are:
Time Recording:
chipzeit.ini and passwd.bin
PC-Stempeluhr:
pcclock.ini
PC-Stempeluhr-Server: clocksrv.ini and clients.txt
Depending on the version number of the old version, the installation directory, the operating system,
and the installation directory of the version 7, there might be various paths where the relevant files are
to be found and where they are to store now.

The directories "Application Data" on Windows XP and "ProgramData" on Windows Vista, 7, and 8 are
hidden by default.
To view these directories in a Windows Explorer, type the path in the address bar of the explorer.

If the Software is installed in a directory outside of "C: \ Program Files" or "C: \ Program Files (x86)",
the above files are copied to the installation directories of the respective programs (see Time
Recording 3.5 on Windows XP in the table above).
Otherwise, the files have to be copied to the following directories, which have to be created if not
existing, or alternatively be created by starting each program and then exit (the configuration files
automatically created – in this case they will be overwritten when copying):

6. Connecting the old data directory without restoring the
configuration
Start the new CHIPDRIVE Time Recording, and connect it to your current Data Directory.
Proceed as follows:
a)
Select "Connect to existing data directory ..." from the menu
"File => Administration".
b) Select in the following dialog your current data directory. Then click OK.
Note: If you are upgrading from a version older than V2.30, your data has to be converted in the new
format first. Start the conversion by clicking OK.
Now check whether all the people and data are available. It is recommended to create an additional
backup copy of your converted data directory (see point 2).
