WHAT IS TRAVELING BASEBALL
Simply put, it is a program
wherein our local teams play teams from adjacent cities. We typically place
one team per age level (13U, 14U, or 15U) and division (AAA or AA or A), so our teams
do not play other teams from within our association. Our traveling teams play in the
Gopher State Baseball League (GSBL) administered by Minnesota Youth Athletic
Service (MYAS), www.myas.org, which is headquartered in Spring Lake Park. We
typically travel to nearby cities such as Maple Grove, Champlin, Andover, Orono,
Brooklyn Park, etc. for away games. The AAA level is the most competitive, while AA is
slightly less competitive, followed by an A level (sometime referred to as a development
league) a step below the AA level.
TEAM NAME
The baseball association’s name changed to Armstrong Cooper
Youth Baseball Association (ACYBA) in 2011. The name used for traveling teams is the
Raptors, which is formally referenced as the Armstrong Cooper Raptors. Two teams at a
given age and level are referred to as, typically, the blue team and the red team, e.g., 14uAA-Red.
WHY TRAVELING BASEBALL
Playing against the best! ACYBA teams
participate in traveling baseball because it is the dominate program for competitive
baseball in the Twin Cities metro area at ages 13U through 15U. Virtually all metro-area
communities participate in traveling baseball programs, playing in one of two leagues,
either the Gopher State League (most north-metro communities) or Metro Baseball
League (most south-metro communities), www.mbl.bz. ACYBA plays in the Gopher
State Baseball League against teams from other north-metro communities.
HOW ARE TRAVELING TEAMS SELECTED
Tryouts are held to select 12
players for each traveling baseball team. Skills tests are used to score players and rank
them 1 through the number trying out. Based upon the number of players attending the
tryouts we form 1, 2, 3 or at most 4 traveling teams at each of three ages; 13U, 14U, and
15U. The top 12 are placed on the traveling team if one team is fielded. The top 24 are
selected for a multi-session secondary tryout if two teams are fielded. The AAA (A)
team coach runs the multi-session secondary tryout to pick the top 12 (of the 24) for his
team. The remaining 12 players are placed on the second traveling team, which typically
plays at the AA (B) level. A similar selection process is used if three (or more) teams are
fielded. We plan to field an A-level team at 13U again in 2014, if at least 36 players
tryout.
Players are placed on teams without regard for city of residence. Players not selected for
a traveling team are invited to play in our house-league program. Every youth ages 13 to
15 interested in playing baseball is offered a spot on either a traveling or house league
team.

HOW MANY GAMES DO TRAVELING TEAMS PLAY
A season consists of
~16 regular season games, at least 9 weekend-tournament games (3 weekends), as many
as ~3 playoff games, and ~3 state-tournament games (if qualified) – total of ~31 games.
The more games a team wins in tournaments, the more games they play. Many weekend
tournaments have a pool-play/bracket-play format, so 5 to 6 games are played to reach
the championship game. Teams may also register for additional weekend tournaments to
play more games. A traveling-team player should be prepared to commit to 5 to 6 days a
week of baseball during the month of June and early July – baseball must be their
primary focus.
ALL-STAR TEAMS
Select players in ACYBA traveling program are picked to
play on high-level all-star teams during the post season, for instance in a league-wide
weekend All-Star program sponsored by MYAS or through programs such as Blizzard
baseball. The exposure provided by playing traveling baseball can open opportunities for
extensive off-season baseball training and play, with associated out-of-state travel for
tournaments in southern cities.
The ACYBA winter warm-ups provide exposure to Pitch2Pitch instructors who also
select players for and coach elite traveling teams (e.g., Minneapolis Millers) playing the
highest level of youth baseball. Again, the commitment required for elite-level play is
high, both in time and expense (e.g. out-of-state tournaments.) But, the level of coaching
and exposure to college and professional programs are unsurpassed.
TRAVELING PROGRAM COST
Each player in the 13U-15U traveling
program pays the base registration fee ($265) and an additional traveling team fee ($185)
for a total of $450. The base fee ($265) is paid upon registration and the traveling fee
($185) is paid on 11 April 2014, after the player is assigned to a team.
The base registration fee ($265) covers the following program-wide costs:
Insurance (medical, board of directors, liability, etc.),
City-imposed field-access fees ($10/player in Plymouth, $2000/year in GV),
Facility rental for tryouts (Cooper HS Gym and practice field),
Website maintenance,
Mailing and copying (stamps, printer cartridges, etc.),
Non-profit operation fees (government registration, etc.),
Scholarships,
Credit card processing charges,
Field maintenance and improvement projects,
Field supplies (chalk, Turface, mound bricks, tarps, etc.),
Smothers Field (electricity, water, garbage, maintenance, etc.),
Portable toilets (Sandburg Middle School and Smothers Field),
Equipment bags, catchers gear, medical kits, etc.,
Uniforms (socks, pants, belts, t-shirts, jerseys, and hats),
Coaches shirts and hats,
Baseballs,
Umpires, and

Two $20 coupon (local-business discount) cards that may be sold by the player
The traveling fee ($185) covers the following travel specific costs:
Registration fees for three weekend tournaments,
Registration and gate fee for one state tournament (if the team qualifies,)
MYAS Gopher State league fees,
Extra baseballs (compared to house league program),
Helmets, and
Extra cost for traveling-team uniforms (t-shirts, belts, and socks).
Note: 16U and 19U teams are not preregistered for weekend tournaments and therefore
the traveling fee ($185) does not apply to players at these age levels. The registration fee
for 16U and 19U is $295, which covers league charges to play in the MYAS Gopher
State 16U and 19U leagues, respectively.
EQUIPMENT
Team Bag
Each team receives an equipment bag containing the following:
2x catchers gloves
2x shin guards with knee savers
2x chest protectors
2x catchers mask/helmets
medical kit (including ice packs)
Catchers Gear
Each team receives two catchers gloves for right-handed throwers.
A catchers glove for a left-hand thrower is available upon request.
Shin guards are either red or blue in color – coach to specify.
Chest protectors are either red or blue in color – coach to specify.
Catchers mask/helmets are either red or blue in color – coach to specify.
Helmets
Incoming 13-year-old players receive a new batting helmet to keep (not
returned to ACYBA). Players are provided with an AC decal and matching number set to
put their jersey number on the helmet for easy identification. Providing helmets to
players relieves the coach of the need to carry helmets to the field and players do not
have to share helmets (useful for hygiene purposes.)
Returning players on the 14U and 15U teams have a helmet from the previous season.
14U and 15U players requiring helmets are issued a surplus helmet from the previous
season (or new helmet if none are available.) The 16U and 19U teams receive mesh bags
with 6 helmets from the previous year, which are returned to ACYBA at the end of the
season.
Damaged helmets are replaced from used stock (if available) or new.
Baseballs
Each 13U, 14U, and 15U team is supplied with 5-dozen game balls
(marked NFHS) at the beginning of the season. We typically use Diamond DOL-1

baseballs. The 16U and 19U teams play fewer games, so receive 3-dozen game balls.
No specific practice balls are supplied as at this age most coaches and players have
accumulated a collection of used baseballs for practice purposes. Teams requiring
additional game balls are responsible for the cost. Surplus new or used baseballs may be
returned to ACYBA at the end of the season if the coach is not returning the following
season. A limited number of used baseballs are available to coaches not having practice
baseballs.
Bats Bats are not provided by ACYBA as players generally prefer their own. (And,
again, coaches are relieved of the duty to carry equipment to the field.) If the coach
believes team bats are needed, we recommend the team manager solicit contributions
from the parents, purchase the number of bats desired, use said bats for the season, then
hold a drawing/raffle for the bat(s) at the end of the season.
Bats allowed for play are subject to change from year to year, but no changes are planned
for 2014 compared to 2013. MYAS Guidelines for bats sizes are summarized below
(from www.myas.org website). For the 2014 season, all non-wood bats shall meet the
Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) performance standard and such bats
shall be labeled with a silk screen or other permanent mark.

The 13U players can purchase any size bat with a 2-1/4 inch barrel and up to -10 (weight
– length) for larger barrels. A -10 bat (e.g., 20-ounce weight and 30-inch length) is easier
to swing than a -8, but typically has thinner walls and is not as durable. A -10 bat should
be good for an entire season, depending upon how much it is shared. Purchasing a bat for
the 13U season with a differential more than -5 (e.g., -8 or -10) means it is a “one-year”
bat as it may not be used for the 14U league (maximum differential is -5 for 14U).
The 14U players may purchase a -5 bat (e.g., 28-ounce weight and 33-inch length), but
again it is a “one-year” bat. A -5 bat is generally not be as durable as a -3 bat, but is
lighter and easier to swing. Bigger, stronger players often select -3 bats at 14U, but
smaller players can also swing -3 bats with weight close to a -5 bat by selecting a shorter
bat (31 or 32-inch.) Bat selection is, to a large degree, a matter of personal preference.

Special rules apply to composite bats, so review bat information available at the
www.myas.org website for specific requirements. Wood bats are also generally
acceptable as the aluminum bat rules are intended to equalize their performance relative
to wooden bats.

The preceding applies only to traveling-league bat selection – ACYBA house-league bat
rules are administered by the house-league coordinator (except for outside tournament
play.)
Equipment Checkout A checklist of the equipment and uniforms (jersey numbers and
sizes) is prepared at the time of pickup. ACYBA has asked for an equipment-bag deposit
of $250 in previous years, but is not doing so in 2014 because of excellent compliance
with equipment return in 2013. We reserve the right to require an equipment-bag deposit
in the future if compliance becomes an issue.
Equipment Return
Each coach is responsible for cleaning equipment and the bag prior
to returning to the travel director. The catcher glove(s) should be cleaned and oiled (or
conditioned) and placed in a 1-gallon zip-lock bag (must be dry). Equipment should be
returned no later than 15 August 2014 (unless the team plays fall baseball, then within
two weeks of the end of fall league.) Drop off location is 8711 32nd Circle North, New
Hope, c/o Steve Hickel, 612-382-5018 (c).
A check submitted when equipment was picked up is returned (or destroyed) when all
equipment is returned by 15 August 2012, unless other arrangements are made (e.g.,
extension for fall baseball league play.)
Ice Packs
Additional ice packs are available from the equipment manager.
L-Screens
L-screens are available to coaches upon request. L-screens are a portable
style that breaks down for storage in a soft-sided bag.
Note: Coaches are asked to not charge equipment purchases at All Star Sports to
ACYBA. Coaches may exchange pants at All Star Sports for an alternate size, if
available.

UNIFORMS
ACYBA teams wear vests with the “Raptors” name embroidered
on the front. Players are “sized” at the tryouts so pants, jerseys, t-shirts and hats may be
readily issued once teams are selected.
For 2014, the 13U-AAA, 13U-AA, 13U-A, 14U-AAA,
14U-AA-I, 14U-AA-II, 15U-AAA, 15U-AA, 16U
(2x), 19U (2x) teams wear white jerseys (vest style)
with red and blue embroidery (see photo to the right).
Five jersey sizes are available; S (34-36), M (38-40),
L (42-44), XL (46-48) and XXL (50-52).
T-shirts, belts and socks are color coordinated with
one set, either red or Navy blue, provided for each
player.
The following items are provided to each player (13U-15U):
White baseball pants (1x)
Red (or Navy blue) socks (1 pair)
Red (or Navy blue) belt (1x)
Red (or Navy blue) t-shirt (1x)
Navy Hat (flexfit) with red visor and red “AC” logo on
white background as shown to the right (15 per team)
Hats are Richardson Model 585 Prowool Flexfit that come in three
sizes; 1) extra small-small (6-1/2 to 6-7/8 inch), 2) small-medium (7
to 7-1/4 inch) and 3) large-XL (7-1/4 to 7-5/8 inch). Players will
be fitted at tryouts to determine size. The backs of the hats are
embroidered with “Raptors Traveling Baseball” in red text.
T-shirts for 13U, 14U, and 15U teams are A4 (or Badger) brand,
lightweight, 100% polyester pique (moisture management fabric)
shirts. The t-shirts are printed with an ACYBA-travelingteam logo, jersey number (matching the jersey), and player’s
last name on the back (new for 2014.) Teams may choose
either red (Scarlet) or Navy blue.
The 16U and 19U team(s) will also use A4-brand t-shirts for
2014, again, in only one color (one belt, one pair of socks,
and one t-shirt – all either Navy blue or red.)
The jerseys and belts are collected by the coach and returned
to ACYBA at the end of the season. The pants, socks, t-shirt
and hat are retained by the player.

Three coach’s shirts are provided per team. Orders/sizes are taken as soon as teams are
selected. Sizes S, M, L, XL, 2XL, and 3XL are available.
Delivery is typically 2 weeks. The shirts are Navy blue with
white insert on the shoulders (see photo to the right.) Shirts
use moisture-management fabric made by Augusta Sportswear.
Note: The vests are white and prone to staining. Do not
bleach the vests as stitching deteriorates and the embroidery
falls off. Spot stains prior to washing. Hang to dry rather than
in a dryer when possible (the fabric dries very quickly if
simply hung up.).
FIELDS
ACYBA annually receives permits for fields used in Crystal, New Hope,
Robbinsdale, Golden Valley and Plymouth.
The 13U program uses an intermediate-sized field having 75-ft basepaths. The main field
with 75-ft basepaths is Zachary PF #5 located at the Zachary Play Field complex in
Plymouth (near Country Rd 9 and Zachary Lane, West of Zachary Elementary.) The 13U
traveling program typically schedules all practices and games at Zachary PF #5. The
field is lighted, but we recommend scheduling early starts (6 - 6:15PM) so lights are not
needed, when possible. The City of Plymouth controls activation of the lights and does
not permit use for practices. The pitching-machine building adjacent to Zachary PF #5
(south side) has rakes for grooming the field. The coach must install the mound cover
after use.
ACYBA is working with the Robbinsdale School District 281 and the City of Golden
Valley to make another 75-ft base path field available for practices.
The 14U and older teams use 90-ft-basepath fields. Teams may select a home field if
desired and, during the MYAS game-scheduling meeting, assign most of their home
games to that field.

Field as this field is leased and operated by ACYBA. Rakes, drags, and other
tools are provided in the equipment building at the end of the third-base
dugout.
The combinations for lockboxes at each field are revised shortly after the end
of each season.
SEASON SCHEDULE
Games are scheduled with coaches of opposing teams at a
MYAS meeting at the Minneapolis Boulevard Hotel, 2200 Freeway Boulevard in
Brooklyn Center, MN 55430 (763) 566-8000 on 12 April 2014 for 13u and 14u and 23
April for 15u (see times below.) The head coach of each ACYBA team and the ACYBA
field-use scheduler attend the meeting. A home and away game are typically scheduled
with each opponent. Two to three games per week are scheduled to allow completion of
season before playoffs.

TOURNAMENTS
Each team is preregistered for 3 weekend tournaments, the
cost for which is paid by ACYBA from the $185 traveling fee. Teams are responsible for
gate fees and other incidental expenses for the 3 tournaments. Teams may register for
additional tournaments, but ACYBA does not reimburse for any entry, gate or other
tournament fees or expenses.
ACYBA also reimburses each traveling team for registration and gate fees for 1 state
tournament (e.g., GSTC, MBT, MSF, etc.) if the team qualifies. Any additional state
tournaments expenses are the team’s responsibility. Teams will not receive a refund or
be reimbursed for a 4th tournament if they do not qualify for and play in a state
tournament.

FUNDRAISER
ACYBA is having several fundraisers in 2014. The first is a
merchant discount card. Each player receives 2 cards (minimum) that he may either sell
($20 each) or retain. Players may sell additional cards to defray registrations fees.
Players selling additional cards are also eligible to win prizes based upon quantity sold.
The second fundraiser is a series of restaurant-dining programs where a portion of sales
on specific dates and times are donated to ACYBA. The first date is for the Crystal
Chipotle on 28 January between 4pm and 8pm. Purchase a meal at Chipotle and mention
our fundraiser and the profits are donated to ACYBA.
Two later dates are at Buffalo Wild Wings (17 February and 3 March), also in Crystal
(near Bass Lake Road and West Broadway.) Show the ticket provided below to have
10% of pre-taxed food sales donated to ACYBA.

ACYBA fielded three 13U teams in 2013. Each team consists of 12 players, so 36
players fill three teams. We will consider adding a 4th 13u team in 2014 if sufficient

ACYBA has dropped either the 15U-AAA (A) or 15U-AA (B) team when an insufficient
number of players tried out at that level (e.g., 20 players trying out for a single team of 12
players.) However, ACYBA does not discourage parents or coaches from recruiting
additional players to fill a second team (or third team), unless our assessment is that the
skill level of the additional team is insufficient for them to have a successful and
enjoyable season.
ACYBA fielded a 15U-AA (B) team in 2013, but not in 2012.
MYAS offers a 14/15u-A level traveling program in 2014. ACYBA will consider
combining 14u and 15u players to form a 14/15u-A team, if sufficient players and
coaches are interested.
Any player not chosen for traveling baseball is invited to play in the house-league
program.
CODE OF CONDUCT
The MYAS code of conduct replaces the ACYBA code of
conduct for traveling teams in 2014 (to avoid duplication of effort).
