CARDIOTHORACIC DIVISION PROTOCOL UPDATED 27/01/05 FLECAINIDE CHALLENGE PROTOCOL Why do we carry out this test? The test is used to screen for Brugada Syndrome What is Brugada Syndrome? It is a congenital disease that presents as a ventricular arrhythmia or sudden cardiac death. It is linked to a sodium pump malfunction that leads to the myocardial tissue being more excitable and therefore vulnerable to tachyarrhythmias. It has a higher incidence in males. Pre‐test • Record baseline observations – BP, pulse, temp, ECG • Cannula During the test • The patient needs to lie on a bed and be attached to a 12 lead ECG throughout the test • 2 mg per kg body weight (max 150mg) of Flecainide is administered IV over 10 minutes • Record a 12 lead ECG every minute during the administration of IV Flecainide (10 minutes) and up to 30 minutes afterwards www.heartrhythmcharity.org.uk
