PRESS RELEASE: Ratings Surge Boosts ABS-CBN’s Airtime Revenues to Record High of Over
Php1.4 Billion in May ‘09
Quezon City, Philippines (June 8, 2009) – After garnering leadership audience shares in Metro
Manila and widening its nationwide ratings superiority over its closest competitor, ABS-CBN
Broadcasting Corporation (PSE: ABS, ABSP) enjoyed its highest selling month to date with revenues
hitting a record-high of over P1.4 billion in May 2009.
According to TNS's 18-22 May 2009 weekday overnight ratings survey, ABS-CBN registered a
total day nationwide share of 47 percent, or 15 percentage-points higher than GMA's 32 percent.
In the highly critical primetime block, ABS-CBN enjoyed an even bigger lead nationwide with a
51 percent audience share, or 16 percentage points higher than GMA's 35 percent. This means GMA
would have to provide 46% more ad spots or extra values just to match up with ABS-CBN's eyeballs.
ABS-CBN also pulled away in Metro Manila with a 46 percent share amongst primetime viewers,
or 8 percentage points higher than GMA's 38 percent share. In Mega Manila primetime, ABS-CBN
caught up with its competitor with an audience share of 42 percent.
Channel 2 Head of Sales August Benitez confirmed that current May revenues surpassed the
record revenues of summer 2007, when political ads significantly spiked ad sales.
"Our current strategy of continuously investing in our programming despite the hard times and
incessantly providing the best ad environment to our valued clients seems to be paying off
remarkably well. The ratings and revenues surge we are experiencing today are simply affirmations
of how viewers appreciate the quality of our programs and how advertisers regard us as the most
meaningful conduit to their customers," he said.
Head of Sales Strategic Planning Oz Trinidad added that the market has been very receptive to
the various special executions included in its sales packages and has effectively strengthened ABSCBN's revenue streams outside of commercial spot placements.
"Our objective, especially in these hard times, is to provide more value to our clients while
increasing our business with them and still maintain responsible broadcasting by bringing the best
programs with a less cluttered environment than our nearest competitor. The May results are simply
a testament to the success of our win-win-win strategy," she said.
To date, new program launches like "Only You" on primetime and "Bud Brothers" in the
afternoon continued to capture the lion's share of viewers, while newest sensation "Boys Over
Flowers" opened to audience shares that are more than double that of its competing program "Hole
in the Wall." And along with powerhouse ratings leaders "May Bukas Pa," "Tayong Dalawa,"
"Maalaala Mo Kaya," "Rated K," "TV Patrol World," "Wowowee," and "ASAP," ABS-CBN has
dominated in all the important timeblocks all throughout the day both on weekdays and on
weekends.
