ATTENTION LECTORS
Your new lector workbooks for the upcoming Liturgical
Year are in the sacristy. Please pick them up at your

Thank you for your continued generous
support of the stewardship campaign in our
parish. God continues to bless our parish.
This weekend we are going to address another
“change” in the words of the Mass. This time the “change” is
in the Profession of Faith (the Nicene Creed). As the priest and
congregation currently stated: “We believe in one Lord, Jesus
Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, light from light, true God from true God,
begotten not made, one in being with the Father.” That phrase
“one in being” will now be changed to “consubstantial.” Why?
For this it is helpful to know a little church history. I have
borrowed the following from an article by Emily StimpsonOSV Newsweekly, 2/20/11. It seems that seventeen hundred
years ago the Catholic Church was drawn into a knockdown,
drag-out fight about how to best express the relationship
between God the Father and God the Son. The fight was
sparked by the Alexandrian priest Arius. He and his followers,
dubbed Arians, argued that the Father and Son were of like
substance, homoousios, but that the Son had not always been
with the Father, that the Father had in fact pre-existed the
Son……Still with me?......Just remember, Arius’ theology is
bad. Arius’ bishop, Alexander, however, said otherwise.
Siding with the Pope and the majority of Catholic bishops, he
defended the teaching that the Father and Son were of the
same substance, or homoousios. He also defended the belief
that the Father and the Son were co-eternal, that they had
existed together through all eternity. One “iota” was all that
differentiated homoousios from homoiousios and yet for that
one “iota” Catholics gave their lives, and bishops such as St.
Athanasius and St Hilary of Poitiers were sent into exile
(Athanasius no fewer than five times). In 325 the Council of
Nicaea definitively settled the question, declaring that the
Father and the Son were of the same substance, homoousios.
Why the big deal? There was concern that although people
could understand how we are “one in being” with the Father, it
does not say anything unique about Christ. In fact, if not
careful one could begin to question the divinity of Christ.
Looking around today I can see that as an issue. People look to
Jesus as a good moral teacher or perhaps a guide for how to
live one’s life, but God? Athanasius was such a staunch
defender of the divinity of Christ because much of the Church
had became Arian in his time. They could accept the divinity
of the Father but Jesus somehow fell short of divinity. This is
still relevant today. If you were told you had an opportunity to
receive God in Holy Communion you would probably wait in
line outside the Church for hours or days on end. We do that to
get sporting event tickets or tickets for concerts don’t we? Yet,
at every Mass when the priest says “ This is My Body, This is
My Blood” he is saying that the blood and wine become Jesus
Christ…..God. Yes, Consubstantial may be an awkward word.
It does not roll easily off the tongue, but as I said last weekend,
words are important and people have died for words. Are you
willing to die to say that Jesus Christ is Lord, that Jesus Christ
is God? Drama aside, it is a good opportunity to reflect on the
words we say and why we say them. It is also good to
contemplate the mystery of the Trinity. Let Jesus in His own
way reflect what I have tried to say here. He will give you the
light to understand why it is so significant that we
acknowledge Him as Lord in every aspect of our lives.

Thirty First Sunday in Ordinary Time
Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
Gathering here at God’s invitation through the Holy
Spirit, on this late autumn Sunday we hear that “whoever
exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles
himself will be exalted.” We who call ourselves
Christians must be careful not to rely only on that name
to get us into heaven, but rather roll up our sleeves and
get busy about the work of proclaiming God’s kingdom
through works of charity and mercy. Let us pray today
for the grace to do just that.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS
“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled.”
Matthew 23:12
“Exalt” seems like such a pompous word. Who among us
would put ourselves on a pedestal and sing our own glory?
Yet, that’s what we do when we think that we get all the
credit for our accomplishments. We must humbly acknowledge that all we have and all we do is a result of
God’s blessings to us. Thus, we are called to give back to
God in gratitude for all that He has given to us.
Natural Family Planning
