SECTION 061000 – ROUGH CARPENTRY
PART 1 – GENERAL
1.1
RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and other Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2
SUMMARY
A. Rough carpentry includes work not specified as part of other sections and is generally
not exposed, unless otherwise specified.
1.3
SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data for the following products:
1. Metal framing anchors and fasteners.
2. Construction adhesives.
B. Material certificates for dimension lumber specified to comply with minimum allowable
unit stresses. Indicate species and grade selected for each use and design values
approved by the American Lumber Standards Committee’s (ALSC) Board of Review.
C. Wood treatment data including chemical treatment manufacturer's instruction for
handling, storing, installation, and finishing of treated material. For each type of
preservative treated wood product include certification by treating plant stating type of
preservation solution and pressure process used, net amount of preservative retained,
and compliance with applicable standards.
D. Single-Source Responsibility for Engineered Wood Products: Obtain each type of
engineered wood product from one source and by a single manufacturer.
E. Single-Source Responsibility for Fire-Retardant-Treated Wood: Obtain each type of
fire-retardant-treated wood product from one source and by a single producer.
1.4
DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Delivery and Storage: Keep materials under cover and dry. Protect against exposure
to weather and contact with damp or wet surfaces. Stack lumber as well as plywood
and other panels; provide for air circulation within and around stacks and under
temporary coverings including polyethylene and similar materials.
PART 2 – PRODUCTS
2.1
LUMBER, GENERAL
A. Lumber Standards: Furnish lumber manufactured to comply with PS 20 "American
Softwood Lumber Standard" and with applicable grading rules of inspection agencies
certified by American Lumber Standards Committee's (ALSC) Board of Review.
B. Grade Stamps: Provide lumber with each piece factory-marked with grade stamp of
inspection agency evidencing compliance with grading rule requirements and identifying
grading agency, grade, species, moisture content at time of surfacing, and mill.
C. Nominal sizes are indicated, except as shown by detail dimensions. Provide actual
sizes as required by PS 20, for moisture content specified for each use.
1. Provide dressed lumber, S4S, unless otherwise indicated.
2. Provide seasoned lumber with 19 percent maximum moisture content at time of
dressing and shipment for sizes 2 inches or less in nominal thickness, unless
otherwise indicated.

2.2
DIMENSION LUMBER
A. For light framing provide "Stud," "No. 3" or "Standard" grade lumber for stud framing
(2 to 4 inches thick, 2 to 4 inches wide, 10 feet and shorter) and "Stud" or "No. 3"
grade for other light framing (2 to 4 inches thick, 2 to 6 inches wide), any species.
2.3
BOARDS
A. Concealed Boards: Where boards will be concealed by other work, provide lumber of
19 percent maximum moisture content (S-Dry or KD-19) and of following species and
grade:
1. Southern Pine "No. 2 Boards" per SPIB rules, or any species graded "Construction
Boards" or "No. 3 Common" per WCLIB or WWPA rules.
2.4
MISCELLANEOUS LUMBER
A. General: Provide lumber for support or attachment of other construction including
support bases, bucks, nailers, blocking, furring, grounds, stripping and similar
members.
B. Fabricate miscellaneous lumber from dimension lumber of sizes indicated and into
shapes shown.
C. Moisture content: 19 percent maximum for lumber items not specified to receive wood
preservative treatment.
D. Grade: "Standard" grade light-framing-size lumber of any species or board-size
lumber as required. "No. 3 Common" or "Standard" grades boards per WCLIB or
WWPA rules or "No. 2 Boards" per SPIB rules.
2.5
CONSTRUCTION PANELS, GENERAL
A. Construction Panel Standards: Comply with PS 1 "U.S. Product Standard for
Construction and Industrial Plywood" for plywood construction panels and, for product
not manufactured under PS 1 provisions, with APA PRP-108.
B. Trademark: Furnish construction panels that are each factory-marked with APA
trademark evidencing compliance with grade requirements.
2.6
CONSTRUCTION PANELS FOR BACKING
A. Plywood Backing Panels: For mounting electrical or telephone equipment, provide
fire-retardant-treated plywood panels with grade designation, APA C-D PLUGGED
EXPOSURE 1, inch thickness indicated, or, if not otherwise indicated, not less than
15/32 inch.
2.7
FASTENERS
A. General: Provide fasteners of sizes and type indicated that comply with requirements
specified in this article for material and manufacture.
1. Where rough carpentry is exposed to weather, in ground contact, or in area of high
relative humidity, provide fasteners with hot-dip zinc coating per ASTM A153 or of
AISI Type 30 stainless steel.
B. Nails, Wire, Brads, and Staples: FS FF-N-105.
C. Power Driven Fasteners: National Evaluation Report NER-272.
D. Wood Screws: ANSI B18.6.1.
E. Lag Bolts: ANSI B18.2.1.
F. Bolts: Steel bolts complying with ASTM A307, Grade A; with ASTM A563 hex nuts
and where indicated, flat washers.

2.8
PRESERVATIVE WOOD TREATMENT BY PRESSURE PROCESS
A. General: Where lumber or plywood is indicated as preservative-treated wood or is
specified herein to be treated, comply with applicable requirements of AWPA
Standards C2 (Lumber) and C9 (Plywood). Mark each treated item with AWPB or
SPIB Quality Mark Requirements.
B. Pressure-treat above-ground items with water-borne preservatives to a minimum
retention of 0.25 pcf. For interior uses, after treatment, kiln dry lumber and plywood to
a maximum moisture content, respectively, of 19 percent and 15 percent. Use
pressure-treated wood for the following items:
C. Wood cants, nailers, curbs, equipment support bases, blocking, stripping, and similar
members in connection with roofing, flashing, vapor barriers, and waterproofing.
1. Wood sills, sleepers, blocking, furring, stripping, and similar concealed members in
contact with masonry or concrete.
2. Wood framing members less than 18 inches above grade.
3. Wood floor plates installed over concrete slabs directly in contact with earth.
D. Complete fabrication of treated items prior to treatment, where possible. If cut after
treatment, coat cut surfaces to comply with AWPA M4. Inspect each piece of lumber
of plywood after drying and discard damaged or defective pieces.
PART 3 – EXECUTION
3.1
INSTALLATION, GENERAL
A. Discard units of material with defects that impair quality of rough carpentry
construction and that are too small to use in fabricating rough carpentry with minimum
joints or optimum joint arrangement.
B. Set rough carpentry to required levels and lines, with members plumb and true to line
and cut and fitted.
C. Fit rough carpentry to other construction, scribe and cope as required for accurate fit.
Correlate location of furring, nailers, blocking, grounds, and similar supports to allow
attachment of other construction.
D. Securely attach rough carpentry work to substrate by anchoring and fastening as
indicated.
E. Countersink nail heads on exposed carpentry work and fill holes.
F. Use common wire nails, unless otherwise indicated. Use finishing nails for finish work.
Select fasteners of size that will not penetrate members where opposite side will be
exposed to view or will receive finish materials. Make tight connections between
members. Install fasteners without splitting of wood; predrill as required.

SECTION 061753 – SHOP FABRICATED METAL-PLATE CONNECTED WOOD TRUSSES
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1
RELATED DOCEMENTS
A.
The general provisions of the Contract, including General Conditions,
Supplementary Conditions, Special Conditions (if any) along with the General
Requirements, apply to the work specified in this section.
B.
Examine all Drawings and all other Sections of the Specifications for
requirements therein affecting the work of this trade.
1.2
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
A.
This Section includes those truss types shown on the Contract Documents.
1. Roof sheathing is specified in Division 6 Section “Carpentry”.
1.3
DEFINITIONS
A.
Prefabricated metal-plate-connected wood trusses include planar structural units
consisting of metal-plate-connected members that are fabricated from dimension
lumber and that have been cut and assembled prior to delivery to the project site.
1.4
SUBMITTALS
A.
General: Submit the following in accordance with Section 013300 “Submittals
and Substitutions”.
B.
Product data for lumber, metal connector plates, hardware, fabrication process,
and fasteners.
C.
Shop drawings indicating species, species group, sizes, and stress grades of
lumber to be used; pitch, span, camber, configuration, and spacing for each type
of truss required; type, size, material, finish, design values, and location of metal
connector plates; and bearing details.
1. To the extent engineering design considerations are indicated as fabricator’s
responsibility, include design analysis indicating loading, assumed allowable
stress, stress diagrams and calculations, and other information needed for review
that have been signed and sealed by a qualified professional engineer
responsible for their preparation.
2. Provide shop drawings that have been signed and stamped by a qualified
professional engineer.
D.
Product certificate, signed by officer of fabricating firm, certifying that metal-plateconnected wood trusses supplied for project comply with specified requirements.
1.5
QUALITY ASSURANCE
A.
TPI Standards: Comply with applicable requirements and recommendations of
the following Truss Plate Institute (TPI) publications:
1. “Design Specification for Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses”.
2. “Commentary and Recommendations for Handling and Erecting Wood Trusses”.
3. “Commentary and Recommendations for Bracing Wood Trusses”.
4. “Quality Standard for Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses”.
B.
Connector Plate Manufacturer’s Qualifications: A manufacturer that is a member
of TPI and that complies with TPI quality control procedures for manufacture of

connector plates published in TPI “Quality Standard for Metal Connector Plate
Manufacture”.
C.
Wood Structural Design Standard: Comply with applicable requirements of
N.F.P.A. “National Design Specification for Wood Construction”.
D.
Single-Source Engineering Responsibility: Provide trusses engineered by the
metal plate connector manufacturer to support superimposed dead and live loads
indicated, with design approved and certified by a qualified professional
engineer.
E.
Engineer Qualifications: A professional engineer legally authorized to practice in
jurisdiction where project is located and experienced in providing engineering
services of the kind indicated that have resulted in the installation of metal-plateconnected wood trusses similar to those of this Project and with a record of
successful in-service performance.
F.
Fabricator’s Qualifications: A firm that complies with the following requirements
for quality control and is experienced in prefabricating metal-plate-connected
wood trusses similar to those of this project that have a record of successful inservice performance:
1. Fabricator participates in a recognized quality assurance program that involves
inspection by SPIB; Timber Products Inspection, Inc.; Truss Plate Institute; or
other independent inspection and testing agency acceptable to Architect and
authorities having jurisdiction.
G.
Single Source Responsibility for Connector Plates: Provide metal connector
plates from a single manufacturer.
1.6
DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A.
Handle and store trusses with care and comply with manufacturer’s instructions
and TPI recommendations to avoid damage from bending, overturning, or other
cause which trusses are not designed to resist or endure.
1.7
SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING
A.
Time delivery and erection of trusses to avoid extended on-site storage and to
avoid delaying work of other trades whose work must follow erection of trusses.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1
LUMBER
A.
Factory mark each piece of lumber with type, grade, mill, and grading agency.
B.
Lumber Standard: Manufacture lumber to comply with PS 20 “American
Softwood Lumber Standard” and with applicable grading rules of inspection
agencies certified by American Lumber Standards Committee’s (ALSC) Board of
Review.
C.
Inspection Agencies: Inspection agencies and the abbreviations used to
reference them to lumber grades and species include the following:
1. SPIB – Southern Pine Inspection Bureau.
D.
Nominal sizes are indicated, except as shown by detail dimensions.
E.

2.2
METAL CONNECTOR PLATES
A.
General: Fabricate connector plates from metal complying with requirements
indicated in this article.
B.
Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Sheet: Structural (physical) quality steel sheet
complying with ASTM A 446, Grade A; zinc coated by hot-dip process to comply
with ASTM A 525, Designation G60; minimum coated metal thickness indicated
but not less than 0.036 inch.
2.3
FASTENERS
A.
General: Provide fasteners of size and type indicated that comply with
requirements specified in this article for material and manufacture.
1. Provide fasteners with a hot-dip zinc coating per ASTM A 153 or of AISI Type
304 stainless steel.
B.
Nails, Wire and Brads: FS FF-N-105.
C.
Power Driven Fasteners: National Evaluation Report NER-272.
D.
Wood Screws: ANSI B18.6.1.

2.4
METAL FRAMING ANCHORS
A.
General: Provide metal framing anchors of type, size, metal, and finish specified
on drawings and that comply with requirements specified including the following:
1. Current Evaluation/Research Reports: Provide products for which reports exist
from a model code organization acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction that
evidence compliance of metal framing anchors for application indicated with the
building code in effect for this Project.
2. Allowable Design Loads: Provide products for which manufacturer publishes
allowable design loads that are determined from empirical data or by rational
engineering analysis and that are demonstrated by comprehensive testing
performed by a qualified independent testing laboratory.
B.
Galvanized Steel Sheet: Steel sheet zinc-coated by hot-dip process on
continuous lines prior to fabrication to comply with ASTM A 525 for Coating
Designation G60 and with ASTM A 446, Grade A (structural quality); ASTM A
526 (commercial quality); or ASTM A 527 (lock-forming quality); as standard with
manufacturer for type of anchor indicated.
2.5
FABRICATION
A.
Cut truss members to accurate lengths, angles, and sizes to produce close-fitting
joints with wood-to-wood bearing in assembled units.
B.
Fabricate metal connector plates to size, configuration, thickness, and anchorage
details required to withstand design loadings for types of joint designs indicated.
C.
Assemble truss members in design configuration indicated using jigs or other
means to ensure uniformity and accuracy of assembly with joints closely fitted to
comply with tolerances specified in TPI “Quality Standard for Metal Plate
Connected Wood Trusses”. Position members to produce design camber
indicated.

D.
Connect truss members by means of metal connector plates accurately located
and securely fastened to each side of wood members by means indicated or
approved.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1
INSTALLATION
A.
General: Erect and brace trusses to comply with applicable requirements of
referenced TPI standards and as indicated on the contract documents.
B.
Where trusses do not fit, return them to fabricator and replace with trusses of
correct size; do not alter trusses in the field.
C.
Erect trusses with plane of truss webs vertical (plumb) and parallel to each other,
located accurately at design spacings indicated.
Hoist trusses in place by means of lifting equipment suited to sizes and types of
D.
trusses required, exercising care not to damage truss members or joints by outof-place bending or other causes.
E.
Anchor trusses securely at all bearing points to comply with methods and details
indicated.
F.
Install permanent bracing and related components to enable trusses to maintain
design spacing, withstand live and dead loads including lateral loads, and to
comply with other indicated requirements.
G.
Do not cut or remove truss members.

A. Product Data: For each type of process and factory-fabricated product. Indicate
component materials, dimensions, profiles, textures, and colors and include

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Protect materials against weather and contact with damp or wet surfaces. Stack lumber,
plywood, and other panels flat with spacers between each bundle to provide air circulation.

PART 3 – EXECUTION
3.1
EXAMINATION
A. Examine substrates, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for
installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance.
B. Examine finish carpentry materials before installation. Reject materials that are wet,
moisture damaged, and mold damaged.
C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2
PREPARATION
A. Clean substrates of projections and substances detrimental to application.
B. Prime lumber to be painted, including both faces and edges. Cut to required lengths
and prime ends.
3.3
INSTALLATION, GENERAL
A. Do not use materials that are unsound, warped, improperly treated or finished,
inadequately seasoned, or too small to fabricate with proper jointing arrangements.
B. Install exterior finish carpentry level, plumb, true, and aligned with adjacent materials.
Use concealed shims where necessary for alignment.
1. Scribe and cut exterior finish carpentry to fit adjoining work. Refinish and seal cuts
as recommended by manufacturer.
3.4
STANDING AND RUNNING TRIM INSTALLATION
A. Install flat grain lumber with bark side exposed to weather.
B. Install cellular PVC trim to comply with Manufacturer’s written instructions.
C. Install trim with minimum number of joints practical, using full-length pieces from
maximum lengths of lumber available. Do not use pieces less than 24 inches long
except where necessary.
1. Use scarf joints for end-to-end joints.
2. Stagger end joints in adjacent and related members.
D. Fit exterior joints to exclude water. Cope at returns and miter at corners to produce
tight-fitting joints with full-surface contact throughout length of joint. Plane backs of
casings to provide uniform thickness across joints, where necessary for alignment.
E. Unless otherwise indicated, countersink fasteners, fill surface flush, and sand where
face fastening is unavoidable.
3.5
PROTECTION
A. Protect installed products from damage from other construction.
B. Remove and replace finish carpentry materials that are wet, moisture damaged, and
mold damaged.

SECTION 064020 – INTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL WOODWORK
PART 1 – GENERAL
1.1

1.2
SUMMARY
A. Plastic laminate countertops, base cabinets, and upper cabinets.
B. Plastic laminate shelving.
C. Solid surface countertops where indicated on drawings.
1.3
DEFINITIONS
A. Interior architectural woodwork includes wood furring, blocking, shims, and hanging
strips for installing woodwork items unless concealed within other construction prior
to woodwork installation.
1.4
SUBMITTALS
A. Product data for all cabinet hardware and accessories.
B. Shop drawings showing location of each item, dimensioned plans and elevations,
large-scale details, attachment devices, and other components.
C. Samples for initial selection showing the full range of colors, textures, and patterns
available; samples of all cabinet hardware in finish specified; provide sample of wood trim.
D. Qualification data for fabricator to demonstrate their capabilities and experience.
E. Two samples of each type of hardware.
F. Two samples of each substrate 6 inch X 6 inch.
G. Two full-size drawing sets of shop drawings shall be provided; all other millwork sets
may be 1/2-size sets.
H. Architect’s AutoCAD files are not shop drawings and are not available.
1.5
QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Fabricator Qualifications: Firm experienced in producing architectural woodwork
similar to that indicated for this Project.
B. Single-Source Responsibility for Fabrication and Installation: Engage a qualified
woodworking firm to assume responsibility for fabricating, finishing, and installing
woodwork specified in this Section.
C. Quality Standard: “Architectural Woodwork Quality Standards” of the Architectural
Woodwork Institute for grades of interior architectural woodwork, construction,
finishes, and other requirements.
1.6
DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Protect woodwork during transit, delivery, storage, and handling to prevent damage,
soilage, and deterioration.
B. Do not deliver woodwork until painting and similar operations that could damage,
soil, or deteriorate woodwork have been completed in installation areas. If woodwork
must be stored in other than installation areas, store only in areas whose
environmental conditions meet requirements specified in “Project Conditions”.

1.7
PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install woodwork until building is enclosed,
wet-work is completed, and HVAC system is operating and will maintain temperature and
relative humidity at occupancy levels during the remainder of the construction period.
B. Field Measurements: Where woodwork is indicated to be fitted to other construction,
check actual dimensions of other construction by accurate field measurements before
fabrication, and show recorded measurements on final shop drawings. Coordinate
fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid delaying the Work.
1.8
COORDINATION
A. Coordinate sizes and locations of framing, blocking, furring, reinforcements, and other
related units of Work specified in other Sections to ensure that interior architectural
woodwork can be supported and installed as indicated.
PART 2 – PRODUCTS
2.1
GENERAL
A. Provide materials that comply with requirements of the AWI quality standard for each
type of woodwork and quality grade indicated.
B. Softwood Plywood: PS 1 (no particle board allowed).
C. Stainless Steel: Alloy 304, satin finish.
D. High-Pressure Decorative Laminate: NEMA LD3, grades, as required by woodwork
quality standard. Provide high-pressure decorative laminates.

2.3
INSTALLATION MATERIALS
A. Furring, Blocking, Shims, and Hanging Strips: Softwood or hardwood lumber, kiln
dried to less than 15 percent moisture content.
B. Screws: Select material, type, size, and finish required for each use. Comply with
ASME B18.6.1 for applicable requirements.
C. Nails: Select material, type, size, and finish required for each use. Comply with
FS FF-N-105 for applicable requirements.

D. Anchors: Select material, type, size, and finish required for each substrate for
secure anchorage. Provide nonferrous metal or hot-dip galvanized anchors and
inserts on inside face of exterior walls and elsewhere as required for corrosion
resistance. Provide toothed steel or lead expansion bolt devices for drilled-in-place
anchors.
2.4
FABRICATION, GENERAL
A. Complete fabrication, including assembly, finishing, and hardware application, before
shipment to Project site to maximum extent possible. Disassemble components only
as necessary for shipment and installation. Where necessary for fitting at site,
provide ample allowance for scribing, trimming, and fitting.
B. Shop-cut openings, to maximum extent possible, to receive hardware, appliances,
plumbing fixtures, electrical work, and similar items. Locate openings accurately and
use templates or roughing-in diagrams to product accurately sized and shaped
openings. Smooth edges of cutouts and, where located in countertops and similar
exposures, seal edges with a water-resistant coating.
2.5
LAMINATE-CLAD CABINETS
A. Quality Standard: Comply with AWI Section 400 minimum requirements for
laminate-clad cabinets, custom grade.
B. AWI Type of Cabinet Construction: Flush overlay.
C. Laminate Cladding for Exposed Surfaces:
1. Horizontal Surfaces: GP-50, 0.050-inch nominal thickness.
2. Vertical Surfaces: GP-28, 0.028-inch nominal thickness.
3. Edges: GP-50, 0.050-inch nominal thickness; PVC NOT ACCEPTABLE.
D. Materials for Semiexposed Surfaces: Thermoset decorative overlay.
E. Drawers:
1. Drawer Sides and Backs: Solid hardwood lumber, shop finished.
2. Drawer Bottoms: Hardwood plywood, shop finished.
F. Colors, Patterns, and Finishes: Provide Architect’s selections from laminate
manufacturer’s full range of colors and finishes.
2.6
LAMINATE-CLAD COUNTERTOPS
A. Quality Standard: Comply with AWI Section 400 requirements for countertops,
custom grade.
B. Core Material: Exterior-grade plywood at wet areas; cabinet-grade plywood at other.
C. Finish/General: High-pressure decorative laminate, GP-50. Provide Architect’s
selections from manufacturer’s full range of colors and finishes.
PART 3 – EXECUTION
3.1
PREPARATION
A. Condition woodwork to average prevailing humidity conditions in installation areas
before installing.
B. Before installing architectural woodwork, examine shop-fabricated work for
completion and complete work as required, including back priming.
3.2
INSTALLATION
A. Quality Standard: Install woodwork to comply with AWI Section 1700 for the same
grade specified in Part 2 of this Section for type of woodwork involved.

B. Install woodwork plumb, level, true, and straight with no distortions. Shim as
required with concealed shims. Install to a tolerance of 1/8 inch in 96 inches for
plumb and level (including tops).
C. Scribe and cut woodwork to fit adjoining work and refinish cut surfaces or repair
damaged finish at cuts.
D. Anchor woodwork to anchors or blocking built in or directly attached to substrates.
Secure to grounds, stripping and blocking with countersunk, concealed fasteners and
blind nailing.
E. Cabinets: Install without distortion so that doors and drawers fit openings properly
and are accurately aligned. Adjust hardware to center doors and drawers in
openings and to provide unencumbered operation.
F. Install cabinets with no more than 1/8 inch in 96-inch sag, bow, or other variation
from a straight line.
G. Tops: Anchor securely to base units and other support systems as indicated. Caulk
space between backsplash and wall with specified sealant.
H. Complete the finishing work specified in this Section to the extent not completed at
shop or before installation of woodwork.
I. Exposed fasteners are not acceptable.
3.3
ADJUSTING AND CLEANING
A. Repair damaged and defective woodwork where possible to eliminate functional and
visual defects; where not possible to repair, replace woodwork. Adjust joinery for
uniform appearance.
B. Clean, lubricate, and adjust hardware.
C. Clean woodwork on exposed and semi-exposed surfaces. Touch up shop-applied
finishes to restore damaged or soiled areas.
D. Provide final protection and maintain conditions in a manner acceptable to fabricator
and Installer that ensures that woodwork is without damage or deterioration at the
time of Substantial Completion.
