ii) Program packages for Summer-04 (Nashville) are due by 14-Feb-04.
c) Ideas for future programs
A symposium on plate heat exchangers was held during the Orlando meeting.
A symposium on “Fundamentals of Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow in HVAC Systems” is planned
for the meeting in Denver.
A symposium on “Recent Advances in the Characterization of Heat and Fluid Flow in HVAC and
Refrigeration Processes” is planned for the Chicago meeting.
8) Report from the Webmaster (D. Nutter) [5 min]
Every TC needs to have a website by Sep 30. Currently, the TC website is not accessible.
9) Report from the Research Chairperson (S. Eckles) [45 min]
a) Report
ASHRAE research plan will be opened for review in the near future. RTARs and work
statements should be in the latest format (available on the ASHRAE research website). There
is a 2 year limit in creating a work statement for an accepted RTAR. TC 8.3 has approached
TC 1.3 to inquire about interest in co-sponsoring a research project on active enhancement of
heat and mass transfer. M. Friedrich volunteered to work on the RTAR on behalf of TC 1.3.
b) Current Research
i) RP-1207 (In Tube Condensation of Ammonia in Smooth and Enhanced Tubes with
and without Oil, PI = P. Hjrnjak, PMS Chair = B. Nelson)
PI submitted the final report. PMS has reviewed the report and sent back for
modifications. The updated report has not yet been received.
ii)
RP-1213 (Refrigerant Flow Maldistribution Control in Evaporators Using EHD, PI = J.
Seyed-Yagoobi, PMS Chair = L. Chamra)
A report on the project has not yet been received by the PMS. A no cost extension was
granted (unanimous approval) until July 1, 2005.
iii) RP-1280-TRP, (Measurement and Evaluation of Single-Phase Heat Transfer and
Pressure Drop Inside Enhanced Tubes for Transition Flow, PI = J. Meyer, PMS
Chair: P. Thors)
PI presented a status report in the research review meeting. Several iterations were
conducted on the test section design. Calibration of the instruments was completed.
Shake down tests are underway. Tests with smooth tubes will be conducted first.
iv) RP-1270-TRP, (Performance Characterization of Selected Refrigerants in Flat Plate
Microscale Condensers, PI = to be determined, PES/PMS Chair = Michele Friedrich)
The contract for the project was signed. PI presented an outline for the project at the
research review meeting including a new refrigerant (FC-7100). PMS will review the
details.
c) Planned/Desired Research
i) Status of Submitted RTARs
a) Update on CFD Fin Design RTAR (J. Judge)
This RTAR was rejected by the RAC
b) Update on Two Phase flow in Risers RTAR (G. Price)
RAC returned the work statement with comments.
c) Update on Wet Fin RTAR (B. Nelson)
Creation of work statement is underway. The TC hopes to vote on the work
statement during the summer meeting at Denver.
d) Update on Evaporator in Corrugated Passages” RTAR (Z. Ayub)
RAC approved the RTAR. A work statement is needed.
e) Update on RTAR “Modeling of Frost Growth”
RTAR was returned with comments.
f) Update on Airside Maldistribution RTAR (D. Zietlow)
Needs a new RTAR.
g) Received URP-1318 on Direct Contact Heat Exchanger for Temperature,
Humidity and IAQ control
L. Chamra will send the URP to B. Nelson and S. Eckles to determine fit within the
scope of the TC.
