GENOTYPING APPLICATIONS
The GenoTube with its proprietary drying system offers
new possibilities for the easy collection of animal diagnostic
samples. Due to fast drying the collected sample is conserved and guarantees that the sample arrives in the best
quality at the lab. Once dried, collected samples can be
transported and stored without refrigeration, which makes
transportation ­simple and very cost effective. In the lab
the samples can be easily reconstituted and used for
numerous analyses.
Genetic-based breeding schemes are being used increasingly
by livestock farmers, etc. Obtaining high yields of intact
genomic DNA is gaining importance as genotyping and
sequencing of DNA samples become standard practice.
The processes of collection, transport, storage and geno­
typing of samples must therefore be integrated, robust,
and cost-effective. Prionics has devised a simple method
for sample collection: The Prionics GenoTube swab.
Saliva / Nasal Swabs
The non-invasive collection of a saliva sample or a nasal
swab sample with the GenoTube is easy and straightforward.
The samples can be ­analyzed in the lab for the presence of
antigens or antibodies by PCR or ELISA methods, depending
on the agent of interest. Research has shown that animal
oral fluids can be used to detect infections of PRRSV, PCV2,
SIV, M. hyopneumoniae, etc. The GenoTube also allows oral
fluid sampling of individual animals and therefore enables
the diagnosis of individual animals.
Blood
Although saliva might be preferred due to its ease of collection, blood may also be taken with minimal invasion.
By scarifying an ear a small amount of blood can be drawn.
The blood sample does not have to be refrigerated for
transportation and storage due to the drying properties
of the GenoTube. The dried blood can then be reconstituted
and analyzed for the presence of antigen or antibody by
either PCR or ELISA methods.
Feces
Common methods to collect and store fecal samples often
lead to the samples becoming overgrown with fungi and
bacteria. The GenoTube offers a very easy and con­venient
way to collect feces samples and to halt fungal and bacterial
growth. The sample can be analyzed for antigen with PCR
and ELISA in the lab in the same condition it has been
collected on the farm.

Collecting animal tissue samples using the GenoTube is
easy and rapid. After the swab containing the sample is
placed back in the tube, the sample is dried and the DNA
in the sample conserved. The tube can be transported
and stored under normal conditions without refrigeration.
DNA contained in the sample remains stable for years.
The amount of nasal tissue DNA collected using the GenoTube is sufficient for testing with the Illumina chip tech­
nology and results are as good as blood samples.
