Dear Friends,
Because everyone needs help sometimes, we help people. United Way helps children fall in love
with learning, and we help families with the essentials. We support programs that offer training and
education that leads to better jobs and careers. And, we provide everyone with one number to call, 2-1-1,
whether the need is childcare, health insurance or tax preparation, help starts with a human connection
at United Way 2-1-1 in Rhode Island.

We also help our donors by making it easy for you to contribute. We welcome gifts to any 501c3 in
the country. Gifts to our Community Impact Fund support our key issue areas through programs that
demonstrate clear results. And, our donors can be confident that their gifts go directly to people and
programs, as a trust covers 100% of our overhead.
Thank you for your commitment to LIVE UNITED— because together, we are changing lives and
strengthening our community, and we can’t do it alone.

We help people.
Over the summer, Hailee found her
voice. She began to initiate games,
raised her hand more often, and
she led the summer reading
challenge.
Because all children deserve a well-rounded education.
We help kids fall in love with learning. United Way of Rhode Island works with partners in education to create
afterschool and summer learning programs for kids of all ages, programs that get results with hands-on
activities that inspire learning. Students develop confidence by joining programs that value their ideas, and
they discover they have multiple options when it comes time to think about college or a career.
• Students from all economic backgrounds can lose up to two months of math skills each summer if they
don’t have access to summer learning. In addition to the loss in math, low-income children can also lose
an additional two months in reading skills.
• Without summer learning, by the fifth grade, children from low-income families can be 2.5 to 3 years
behind children from middle-income families.
• Buh-bye summer slide: the average gains by students from pre-test to post-test in the Hasbro Summer
Learning program show 35 percent gains in literacy and 47 percent gains in math.
2.5-3 years
Financial Investments
made by United Way of
Rhode Island through the
Community Impact Fund:
• Afterschool program grants: $450,000
Funding that supports programs, from
elementary through high school.
• Hasbro Summer Learning: $505,000
Funding that sustains 18 summer
learning programs located statewide.
With continued support from the
community, United Way of Rhode Island
will lead the effort to expand the Hasbro
Summer Learning program in 2016. While
1,600 children participated in 2015, more
than 30,000 Rhode Island families would
enroll their children in summer learning
programs, if they were available to them.
Gifts to the Community Impact Fund
support our efforts to help children fall in
love with learning.

• Early Childhood Education program
grants: $392,000 Funding that improves
programs and results for our youngest
learners, birth through age 5.
Without summer learning, by the fifth grade,
children from low-income families can be
2.5-3 years behind their middle-income peers.

We help people.
It’s gratifying to help people
discover new skills, land good jobs,
and also give them the tools to
better manage personal finances.
Because a changed economy has left many Rhode Islanders searching for new ways
to support themselves and their families, we help people gain the skills they need to
explore new options in training, employment and careers.
United Way of Rhode Island also helps people change their futures by providing the tools to better
manage finances and to save more of the money they earn by working.
• United Way of Rhode Island’s Community Impact fund supports adult education programs that help people
remove barriers to employment, including improving skills in math, reading, writing, and digital literacy, as
well as learning English as a second language.
• In 2015, United Way of Rhode Island funded the Rhode Island Resource Hub, an online database of
education and training opportunities that helped 2,200 people in the last year.
• United Way-supported tax assistance centers helped 11,500 people claim the credits and refunds they
earned by working. As a result, Rhode Islanders collected more than $17 million to return to the local
community thanks to this United Way-supported program.
2,200
In 2015, United Way of Rhode Island funded the Rhode Island
Resource Hub, an online database of education and training
opportunities that helped 2,200 people in the past year.
United Way of Rhode

Fund Investments:
• Support for technical and training
programs, as well as for programs that
support low income workers: $847,000
• F inancial opportunity programs that help
adults learn how to manage and save
their money: $562,000
Gifts to the Community Impact Fund
support our efforts to help youth and
adults reach school and career goals, and
to improve the overall economic security
of Rhode Island families.

• Grants that support free tax preparation
services through Volunteer Income
Tax Assistance (VITA) centers, and that
help working families claim the Earned
Income Tax Credit (EITC): $211,000
Because it is the nation’s most effective
anti-poverty program for working families,
support for the expansion of the Earned
Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a priority for our
2016 public policy agenda. Refunds and
tax credits lift families out of poverty and
boost the local economy.

We help people.
Because 90,000 households in Rhode Island are struggling to meet basic needs.
United Way believes not only in helping people through an immediate crisis, but also in funding
programs that help people develop the tools they need to provide for themselves and their families.
Each year, more than 15,000 Rhode Islanders receive help with basic needs through programs
funded by United Way of Rhode Island.
• Believing that being homeless should be rare and temporary, we invest in programs that connect
people with services designed to help them become permanently housed.
• We support the goals of Zero 2016 to eliminate chronic and veteran homelessness in
Rhode Island.
• Recognizing that thousands of Rhode Islanders struggle to afford housing, we have made
significant financial investments in affordable housing bond campaigns, securing nearly 2,000
new affordable housing units.

• Support for programs that address
temporary and permanent housing,
including support for affordable housing
programs as well as case management
services, $874,000
With 60,000 requests to 2-1-1 for housingrelated needs, we know that housing
affordability continues to be a challenge
for many. In the year ahead, we’ll focus on
advocating for the need for more affordable
options in Rhode Island.

We help people.
Because we all need help sometimes, we provide a place for everyone to call when
they need help: United Way 2-1-1 in Rhode Island.
2-1-1, three simple numbers, one human connection. The call is free and is available to Rhode
Islanders 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, even in a snowstorm. But our work doesn’t end there.
Insights gained from 2-1-1 help United Way of Rhode Island identify the changing needs of Rhode
Islanders, which helps us serve our community.
With the first 2-1-1 formal data report released in 2015, “Help Starts Here Rhode Island,” United
Way brought attention to how it tracks the needs of callers, which have changed dramatically in
recent years as economic recovery has stalled for thousands of local families.
100,000
Requests for food grew to more than 100,000.
United Way 2-1-1 in Rhode
Island handled 197,000
requests
“I always thought 2-1-1 was
just for people who were
struggling. Now I know it’s a
resource for me for my aging
parents.”
Gifts come from all levels—from the
$25-a-week donor who gives through
workplace giving to a generous corporate
gift from Citizens Bank. Examples of state
funding include a Rhode Island Lottery
contract with 2-1-1 to manage the state’s
Gambler’s Hotline, which took nearly 2,400
calls in 2014, and a new program with the
Division of Elderly Affairs that counts on THE
POINT to handle after-hours emergencies for
seniors.
• Requests for shelter climbed above 50,000
this year, but the highest need was for
food, with more than 100,000 requests.
• More than 70,000 requests from Rhode
Islanders needing help navigating health
information, including assistance enrolling
in HealthSourceRI, Medicare Part D and
Medicaid.
Help for Rhode Islanders during a storm or
disaster is provided as a public service by
United Way of Rhode Island.

• 18,000 requests from people looking to
connect with job-training programs and
unemployment supports.

“The Women’s Leadership Council is a network
of smart, action-oriented women giving back to
Rhode Islanders. The work is rewarding as are
the many connections I have made.” – Margaret R. Lawlor
Let’s talk engagement.
Together, we’re working to help change the lives of 250,000 Rhode Islanders.
Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) members mobilize women to enact
change. They create STEM and literacy opportunities for Rhode Island
youth, and they’re developing mentoring partnerships with local
schools and libraries. Throughout the year, they meet to network and
to build on ideas that support improved childhood literacy.
“YLC has helped shape me
professionally – and personally.
Very frequently I am in awe at
how many wonderful people
are involved in the group and
what an incredible job they do
to support our community.”
– Crystal Guibeau

Members of our Young Leaders Circle (YLC) are being tapped for their
potential to lead. They volunteer, raise funds, and have fun working
alongside like-minded professionals. In the last year, among their
events they mentored youth and made the holidays special for others.
They provided opportunities for networking and for celebration,
and they formed a team for the Citizens Bank Pell Bridge Run called
RUN United.
In the last year, United Way of
Rhode Island volunteers sorted
food, tended gardens, offered
financial and credit stability
workshops, built outdoor learning
environments, and collected and
wrapped holiday gifts. They’ve
collected and distributed 22,460
books for children. They’ve helped
11,500 people complete their
tax returns. They’ve helped raise
funds for programs that change
lives, and provided trusted advice.

The Tocqueville Society
Celebrating 30 Years of Leadership Giving
The Tocqueville Society acknowledges philanthropic leaders in each United Way community who
contribute $10,000 or more annually. Tocqueville Society members are critically important to our ability
to strengthen our communities and change lives. Their collective leadership represents 28 percent of
United Way of Rhode Island’s annual campaign with total gifts of more than $3.6 million. Our Tocqueville
Society members’ generosity today impacts the generations of tomorrow. In 2015, United Way is especially
grateful as the Tocqueville Society celebrated 30 years of success.

Opening Doors for Westerly’s Children
Opening Doors for Westerly’s Children works to improve out-ofschool opportunities and childhood literacy in Westerly. This
year, volunteers raised $23,000 to provide scholarships for
afterschool and summer learning opportunities, and raised an
additional $23,000 to provide backpacks and school supplies
for 390 students in Westerly’s Hasbro Summer Learning
Program at Tower Street Community Center and Head Start, and
to children throughout Bradford. Volunteers also distributed
books and backpacks at the Jonnycake Center, a local food
bank. The program has grown in three short years from serving
90 children to serving 390 children, and doubling the number of
summer scholarships from 10 to 20.
