Love to deck the halls with oldfashioned incandescent lights?
Don’t worry: Holiday lights are exempt from the new energy-saving
standards for light bulbs that will
take effect next year. From outdoor
icicle lights hanging from eaves to
strands of twinkle lights wrapped
around a Christmas tree, lights
used for holiday decorating are
considered “specialty bulbs” and
aren’t affected by the standards
being phased in starting in Janu-

ary. That was welcome news to
holiday light fanatic Chuck Taylor,
who said the standards created a
stir in the online forum he runs at
Planetchristmas.com. “This was a
very popular subject last year,”
said Taylor, a holiday light consultant in Franklin, Tenn.
Many Christmas lights already
are more energy-efficient than the
old-fashioned incandescents.
“To be honest, the little niche of
the Christmas light industry already has been fast moving toward
LEDs,” said Garth Svenson, president of the Christmas Dove in Bar-
rington, N.H. The store is the
largest of its kind in New England,
with more than 30 rooms full of
Christmas decorations and lights.
Some fans of traditional lights
complain that the more energy-efficient LED lights don’t produce
the same colorful halo effect as
older bulbs. Strands of LEDs also
are more expensive than incandescents, though the LEDs are much
cheaper to run and are often more
durable. The new efficiency standards apply to the familiar household screw-in bulbs, and while

they don’t specifically ban traditional incandescents, they require
bulbs to have a higher level of efficiency than the classics can produce. Joseph Higbee, a spokesman
for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, said there
are new halogen incandescent
bulbs that meet the standards, and
consumers have a choice among
those, compact fluorescent and
the light-emitting diode, or LED,
bulbs, he said.
LED holiday lights have been
around for years, and sales have
increased as new varieties — including some that attempt to
mimic the warmer glow of incandescent lights — hit store shelves.
The Home Depot, which started
selling LED lights in 2006, sold
enough strands last year to circle
the globe 1.5 times.
Locally, at the Lowe’s store located in White Township, more customers seem to be purchasing the
LED lights over regular lights this
year than what they have over a
five-year period, according to

Kristy Patz, outside lawn and garden department manager.
“If you have that kind of money,
that’s the way to go,” Patz said.
She also said the lights are also
kid-friendly, because they are cool
to the touch. Also a popular item
this year at Lowe’s are lights
shaped like icicles “that actually
look like they are dripping, especially the clear ones,” she said.
In Claremont, N.H., Brian
Mitchell was busy last week setting
up the 45,000-light display he puts
up in his yard every year. He spent
about $1,200 on LED lights this
year, not because he was worried
the old lights would disappear
from store shelves but because he
wants to keep up with the latest in
lighting technology. Mitchell,
whose obsession started with decorating every room in his house
with paper chains when he was a
kid, set up his first outdoor display
about 20 years ago with one plastic
Santa and a single string of lights.
Today, his small yard is covered

Retailers ready to attract holiday shoppers
By ROBIN McMACKEN
New York Times News Service
DAYTON, Ohio — Despite a holiday season dampened by a struggling economy and
high unemployment rates, shoppers will
find much to be jolly about in the ways retailers will actively court them this year.
Savvy spenders in 2011 can expect extended store hours, free shipping offers, reasonable layaway programs and revved-up online shopping sites.
There is good cause for retailers to spice
things up for value-conscious shoppers.
Although holiday retail sales for 2011 are
expected to increase 2.8 percent to $465.6
billion, according to the National Retail Federation, that growth is lower than the 5.2
percent increase retailers experienced last
year.

in mind the Internet has made
shopping a
24/7 bargain
bonanza.
Online retailers are prepping by optimizing their sites, beginning their marketing
and promotions early, and planning plenty
of free shipping promotions as they aim to
provide value and convenience for their
shoppers, according to Fiona Swerdlow of
Shop.org. “Online retailers will
also leverage their social media
and mobile platforms for
savvy shoppers on the go,
knowing how important

LAY IT AWAY
Layaway plans have re-emerged from the
shopping days of yore as consumers work to
eliminate credit card debt.
This year, the Sears layaway program allows customers to pay as little as $20 or 20
percent down (whichever is greater) and
make online or in-store payments every two
weeks before claiming their goods. Sears
charges $5 to initiate a layaway contract and
$15 for cancellation.
In the Kmart in-store and online layaway
program, shoppers are required to pay $5 to
start a layaway contract, make a down payment of $15 or 10 percent (whichever is

SHIPPING IN STYLE
Shoppers have plenty to be joyous about this holiday season as
research shows nine in 10 online
retailers say they plan on offering
free shipping at some point, up
from 84.8 percent in 2010.
SMART SHOPPING
■ Shop early and shop often, according to Michelle Madhok, online shopping expert and editor of
shefinds.com. Stores are expected
to have smaller inventories this
holiday season, so don’t delay if
you have specific gifts in mind.
■ Fend off holiday madness by
staying organized. Madhok suggests creating shopping lists and
budgets by registering (for free) on
rememberthemilk.com.
■ Take advantage of search engines that offer coupon alerts for
savvy shoppers.
■ Frequently visit such off-price
stores as T.J. Maxx and Marshalls to
snag brand names for less.
Look to kids’ passions for perfect gifts
By LEANNE ITALIE
Associated Press
NEW YORK — To the uninitiated, buying gifts for kids can feel
like a treasure hunt without a map
through store aisles and websites
packed for the holidays. But sussing out clues may not be as difficult as it looks.
Has the young recipient ever offered you one of his homemade
cupcakes? Have you seen her tear
around on a little ride-on bike? Is
the living room often strewn with
building bricks or stacking blocks?
Casual buyers looking for presents for children they don’t know
well need only focus on general
interests. Mom and dad will likely
take on the “it” gift of the season,
or farm it out to grandma, leaving
lots of room for other shoppers,
whether the giftee is a builder,
baker or bookish.
If that sounds too complicated,
reach for the classics — in books,
apparel or toys, said Rachel Jarrett,
general manager of the children’s
department for the sale site Gilt
Groupe. A sweater with room for
size variation, or mittens or hats,
for example. Try toys in wood, including eco-friendly bamboo.
“We do incredibly well with
wooden toys,” Jarrett said.
Anne Keane, fashion director for
Lucky magazine, suggests keeping
it simple. “Generally, staying with
moderately classic, small gifts is
the easiest route to take for all age
groups,” she said. “Especially if
you don’t know the kids that well.”
The handcraft site Etsy.com has
unique felt toys, Keane said. And
Plan Toys makes a fun wood-andcanvas shopping cart on three
wheels for toddlers.
Don’t be afraid to think outside
the box, Jarrett urged. Wall decor
may not feel terribly gifty, but
Wallcandyarts.com has chalkboard decals in the shapes of elephants, apples and circles that
would please lots of kids. Room
organizers that play into a favorite
theme can also be fun.
And there’s nothing wrong with
asking your giftee’s parents for a
suggestion.
“I think parents do appreciate it
when you ask what might make a
nice gift,” Jarrett said. “They want
to make sure you’re not getting
something that maybe somebody
else is also getting. It’s a lot to return a toy.”
A few suggestions by interest:
HARRY POTTER KIDS
WANDS: What might the young
fan not already have? A beautiful,
nearly $40 replica of his favorite
character’s wand, perhaps. The HP
area of the Warner Bros. site, Wb
shop.com, has a nice selection of
collectible wands complete with
fancy boxes straight from the Ollivanders shop. Warning: While fun
to hold, they’re true collectibles
and could break if treated roughly.
HARRY POTTER LEGO: HP sets
abound. Reach for the Knight Bus.
The purple triple-Decker bus set
just out over the summer includes
three mini-figures, of Harry, Stan
Shunpike and Ernie Prang, along
with Harry’s owl Hedwig. It can be
rebuilt as a regular bus and kids
likely won’t grumble at having
more than one. From Lego.
“LEGO HARRY POTTER: Years 5-7”:
For Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 3,
PSP, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS
CUTTING EDGE
and Games for Windows PC.
Continues the saga
of “Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4.” Recommended for ages
10 and up as the HP
world turns darker.
From Warner Bros.
T-SHIRTS: Chances of you
buying a different one
than your young
HP fanatic already has are in
your favor. Look
around for quality and sales. A call
to mom or dad for
the child’s favorite
house at Hogwarts
will help you drill
down to just the right
crest, robe or scarf, and lead
to more token HP-by-house gifts
like key chains, magnets and writing journals.

Metal 28788
16-inch faux pine wreath
5 large flocked poinsettias, clip
on
5 long white feather accents
1. Hold one flower and add Tulip
Beads in a Bottle Paint to each
petal. To do this, hold the bottle
upside down and gently squeeze
until a small drop releases. Keep
the drops evenly spaced. You may
want to practice on a spare piece
of cloth before working on the
flower. As far as color, you can
choose if you want all gold or all
red Tulip Beads in a Bottle Paint or
a combination of both.
2. When applying the dots, start
by applying beads to the center
area of the flower, then set it aside
to dry, and repeat on the next
flower. Once all the centers are dry,
you can hold on to them in order
to apply Tulip Beads in a Bottle
Paint to the outside areas of each
flower.
3. Now apply Tulip Beads in a
Bottle Paint to the feathers. Let dry.
4. Assemble the flowers and
feathers around the wreath to your
liking.

Gifts and décor to make for the holidays
Continued from Page 7
2. Set the pieces out flat on a
table and apply a contrasting color
of Tulip Beads in a Bottle on each
one. Let dry. If your fabric or ribbon is very sheer, work on top of a
plastic covering so you can peel up
the ribbon after it dries.
3. Once all the strands are dry,
loosely drape them around your
tree. You can also gather them into
a single garland and hang on your
mantel.

Get your home ready for the holidays
Welcoming friends and family
into your home is one of the best
ways to celebrate the season. One
of the keys to making visitors feel
right at home is to be a happy host.
So, do yourself — and your guests
— a favor and put a little effort into
getting your home holiday houseguest perfect. Since your house
will be full with visitors over the
holidays, go beyond cleaning and
organizing. Adding touches of festive décor will create a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and if there
are do-it-yourself projects still on
the to-do list, now is the best time
to finish them. Not only will your
home look fresh and revived to
you, but your guests will certainly
notice your home’s updated appearance. To get your home ready
for hosting holiday guests, follow
this room-by-room checklist.
Whether you want to tackle one
room at a time or do it all at once,
breaking down your tasks can
make the process much easier.
THE KITCHEN
As the central hub of the home,
guests will naturally congregate in
the kitchen, so spend time making
small, budget-friendly updates to
make the space more comfortable,
for both chef and audience.
■ A fresh palette: Make an update that will instantly refresh your
space with a new paint color. Be
empowered to experiment with a
bold, food-inspired hue. With its
limited wall space, the kitchen
makes an ideal place to use a bolder hue for just the right pop of
color.
■ Details matter: Clear the clutter and make room for all the
chef’s necessities in your kitchen,
making the chef’s job easier.
ing family photos of holidays past
and treasured heirlooms over the
fireplace, where everyone can see
them.
GUEST ROOMS
Both guest bedrooms and bathrooms should be given extra special attention when hosting
overnight holiday visitors. Consider everything a guest might need
and then add some little extras to
make their experience even better.
■ Practical fixes: For your guest
bedroom, adding portable lighting
like small table lamps will make
the room seem friendlier when
added to overhead lighting and
will keep guests from running
across the room in the dark after
switching off the lights. Adding a
decorative mirror is a much-ap-
preciated touch and takes little effort.
■ Comforts of home: Ensure that
your guest rooms, particularly the
bathrooms, make visitors of all
ages feel comfortable. Update your
bathroom hardware with stylish
faucets, knobs and even grab bars
to ensure no guests slip or fall
when entering and exiting the
shower.
As important as it is for your
guests to be comfortable at your
home during the holidays, it
should be a relaxing place for you
too, and one that you can enjoy
long after the holiday season. By
preparing your home ahead of
time, you’ll be able to focus on enjoying the holidays with your family and friends.

THE LIVING ROOM
You’ll be spending a lot of time in
your living spaces with your
guests, so make sure they’re decorated in festive spirit and ready to
accommodate a crowd.
■ Layer lighting: Don’t just rely
on overhead fixtures. Adding softer
ambient light (like wall sconces),
task lighting (under-cabinet lights
or desk lamps) and accent lighting
(such as art lighting or candles)
will help set your desired mood.
■ Décor details: The mantel is a
perfect focal point for holiday decorating. Add some atmospheric
scent, color and texture with fresh
evergreen garlands and holiday
plants. Spray paint terracotta pots
silver and gold and plant amaryllis,
Christmas rose or rosemary. Or,
personalize your display by plac-

Holiday décor goes natural
By KIM COOK
For The Associated Press

WELCOME GUESTS at the front door with a fresh green wreath.
There’s nothing quite like a winter walk through snowy woods.
This holiday season, trend watchers are encouraging us to bring
some of those evocative, foresty
elements home to decorate our
outdoor and indoor spaces.
It’s a look that’s soothing and
seasonal, and easy to attain without spending tons of money.
Simple and natural are where it’s
at this year; spiked, if you wish,
with a bit of bling or a festive bow.
You can buy or scrounge your
greenery locally, and add a few
found or inexpensive elements.
Even a traditional cedar, pine or
boxwood wreath can be given a
contemporary tweak if you dispense with the usual embellish-
ments. There’s something elegant
about a spare, unadorned circle of
green. Add a few small apples, oranges, pomegranates or pepperberries for a natural color touch.
Wrap or bow-tie the wreath with
burlap for a rustic vibe, or use velvet ribbon in an unexpected hue
like persimmon, purple or mustard.
Wreaths made completely out of
cushion moss look striking, as do
those made of bay, sage or magnolia leaves. Freeze-dried fruit or
flowers can look beautiful for
years; just keep wreaths made of
these delicate materials out of direct weather.

smaller, store-bought wreath inside a larger evergreen one.
Glam up the greenery with
metallic ribbon — copper and
pewter are on trend. Add some
flair for free by entwining an old
necklace through the boughs, or
affixing an old brooch.
Wreaths don’t have to be round.
Find square and star forms at
nurseries and craft stores, or use
old picture frames. Take apart a supermarket bundle of evergreens,
and get creative with jute, hemp,
wire or a glue gun.
Collect lichen-covered twigs,
lashing them together in a geometric shape. Dress with dried hydrangea or roses, tiny pinecones or
white lights.
Coastal Living magazine suggests tying shells and starfish to
wreaths and garlands — great for
seaside holiday homes. The design
team at Country Living magazine
fills a flat-sided fisherman’s basket
with greens and berries to hang on
the door. And Executive Editor
Shelley Ridenour says that while
white pine and fir are traditional,
“we love the chic, free-spirited
look of boxwood. Eucalyptus
leaves look fantastic with blue
spruce when twisted into a garland
or wreath. The key is to keep it simple, so the beauty of the greenery
isn’t overwhelmed.”
Sunset magazine’s website offers
instructions for creating a fragrant
snowflake using fir boughs and floral wire.
Swags are easy; ramp up the
glamour by tying a handful of
boughs together with wire and
adding creamy ribbon, clusters of
glitter-dusted cones or stars.
And garlands add a pretty frame
to doors and a lush, finished look
to porch rails and fences. Fragrant
cedar and long needled pine are
attractively shaggy; boxwood and
short-needled evergreens work
well for a formal front entrance.
Mini lights look great in either, as
do simple silver, ruby or sapphire
ornaments; keep the frippery like
ribbons and bows to a minimum
for a clean, contemporary look.
If you’re lucky enough to have a
big front stoop, fill urns with fir
boughs, eucalyptus, ilex berries
and branches — birch, dogwood
and even salvaged twigs from
around your neighborhood give
height and texture to a pot. Add
some spray-painted white ones for
contrast.
Apartment dwellers might consider a slim florist’s bucket, weighted with a heavy rock and filled
with good-smelling cedar. Or

splurge on a faux-boxwood topiary, which will last for years, and
add a lush bow.
Don’t forget the backyard. Place
a wreath or garland on patio
fences and enclosures, and fill
empty planters with greens, unbreakable ornaments, a tangle of
lights — or all three.
Continue the nature vibe indoors by keeping the palette
muted — white, cream, mocha —
and go for texture to create interest.
Make a trail of ivy along the center of a table, mixing in hurricane
lights and glass votive holders,
suggests Ridenour. “Fill terrariums
or glass cloches with evergreens or
beautiful winter objects, like
pinecones or acorns, and display
them on a dining table, mantel or
bookcase. Hanging a wreath atop a
mirror gives it the refined look of
framed art,” she says.
West Elm has a wreath studded
with white felt balls that look like
snowballs. It’s available in green or
red, too, but the white makes an
especially striking statement. The
retailer also offers an ethereal
feather wreath in white or a gentle
dove brown. Pair with copper mercury glass or bisque candle holders, some polished pebbles or a
twist of shell pink ribbon and
you’ve got an elegant holiday mantelpiece.
Whether you’re going with a
bundle of bare branches in a pretty
pot or a full-size evergreen as your
holiday tree, think about decorating it with simple snowflakes made
of different materials, such as
laser-cut wood or felt. Choose winsome bottle-brush natural fiber ornaments, in animal shapes like
foxes, bears, owls and raccoons.
A tree full of little birds, perhaps,
or a garland of paper snowballs
and white jingle bells can be
charming.
A home that’s warmly dressed
with outdoor elements says
“Happy Holidays” all season long.
Are you ready to create some
lovely holiday displays this year?
Before you pull out the tree ornaments, the sparkly reindeer figurines or the spools of holiday ribbon, first grab the greens. Great
greens are the key to success for
every holiday display, whether
simple or over the top.
Today’s faux greens are so lifelike
you almost have to touch them to
tell they’re not real. And, even better, as the quality of the greenery
has gone up through the years, the
price has dropped. Here are some
tips for using greenery as a base for
killer holiday displays.
Even though you love the holiday
season, with all its magic and
charm, have you ever found yourself groaning at the thought of decorating your home?
More than a few of my friends
and customers have confided to
me that they dread the idea of holiday decorating because they are
convinced it will take forever.
That’s when I tell them about my
time-saving secret weapon: faux
evergreens.
If you haven’t already, invest in
some garland, picks and wreaths.
Fluff them up so they look lifelike,
not smashed.
Then, put on the holiday music,
make yourself a cup of cocoa and
spend an hour, max, infusing your
home with loads of holiday glitz.
Here are a few super-quick ways to
get a knockout holiday look with
greens.
If your staircase is a prominent
feature in your home’s entry, you’ll
get a lot of bang for your buck decorating your banister with greenery. My favorite is pine garland

that is rife with berries and

that looks like it’s dusted with frost.

stuff looks!

HOLIDAY GLAZED HAM

1/3 cup reduced fat raspberry

2 teaspoons Better Than
Bouillon chili base
1 7 to 10-pound thawed,
smoked, bone-in, spiral sliced,
fully cooked ham
½ cup water

In large saucepan over mediumlow heat, whisk to combine vinaigrette, brown sugar, vegetable and
chili bases. Whisk continuously
until glaze begins to boil. Remove

Coat large rack and roasting pan
with cooking spray. Place ham on
prepared rack in roasting pan, add
water to pan bottom. Generously
brush ham with glaze. Lightly
cover ham with foil if ham starts to
over brown. Bake until done, about
2 hours.
Use remaining glaze to baste
ham every 30 minutes; discard left
over glaze.
An additional glaze recipe may
be prepared and served warm tableside, to accompany sliced ham.

minced
2 tablespoons butter
1 ½ pounds frozen whole green
beans
½ teaspoon kosher salt
Parmesan cheese, for garnish

Mix Tuscan Herb Paste with
crushed fennel seeds and celery
salt. Starting at the neck of the
bird, slip your hand between the
meat and the skin to loosen.
Rub half the paste mix under
skin, and rub remaining paste inside the cavity and over the rest of
the turkey.
Place two-thirds of the chopped
onion and fennel stalks inside cavity. Truss bird.
Place turkey in a roasting pan.
Roast at 400°F for 30 minutes.
Reduce temperature to 325°F
and continue cooking the turkey
to an internal temperature of
160°F, approximately 2½ to 3
hours. Baste turkey often during
cooking with juices from pan. If
turkey begins to get too brown,
cover it loosely with aluminum
foil.
As turkey roasts, simmer giblets
(neck, heart and gizzard), the other
one-third of the fennel stalk, onion
mix and diced celery in 1 quart
chicken stock until tender, approximately 1½ hours.
When turkey is done, remove
from roasting pan and set aside to
rest. Degrease roasting pan, reserving 3 ounces of fat to make a
roux.
Deglaze pan with a small
amount of chicken stock. Transfer
stock to a saucepot, and add remaining stock and broth from
giblets. Bring to a simmer and degrease.
Make a blond roux with reserved
fat and flour. Add roux to the liquid, whisking well to prevent
lumps.
Simmer 15 minutes. Strain gravy
through a fine-meshed strainer.
Adjust seasoning.

Simply swag the garland up and
around your banister, securing it
with florist wire or pretty holiday
ribbon.
I like the garland on my banister
to look random and loose and
haphazard, tucked up at irregular
intervals, which makes it even
easier to put up.
One of my favorite holiday looks
is to loosely twist some pine garland through the arms of the
chandeliers in my study, dining
room and kitchen.
It’s simple to do but looks so
elaborate that people will think
you decorated for hours.
Loop the garland around the
chain of the chandelier, then
tread it in and out a few of the
light fixture’s arms.
I like to leave a bit of garland
hanging down from the fixture,
too. Stop there or embellish the
light fixture with some holiday
ribbon or ornaments.
You can dangle ornaments or
little hanging votive cups from the
chandelier’s arms using fishing
wire if you want an extra-special
display.
Buy a pre-made swag or, if
you’re feeling crafty, make your
own.
Then hang it on an interior or
exterior door. It’s just a little touch
of Christmas, but it adds lots of
cheer.
You could also hang a swag over
a mirror or a piece of artwork
using a door hook meant to hold
wreaths.
I like to use statement-piece
vases in my year-round decorating so I can change them out for
each season.
Statuesque glass vases, for example, are long on drama but take
just seconds to decorate. Insert
some fallen branches and some
greenery picks that feature pine
cones and faux frost. Who knew
that creating a head-turning display could be so easy?
If you have great pottery vases
and urns, turn them into vases for
greenery bouquets this holiday
season.
Start with a fallen branch from
your yard, then fill in with an assortment of picks.
Keep it natural — or, if you want
some glitz and glam, tuck in picks
that feature pearl drops, sequins
or glitter.
When we decorated my dining
room for my fall open house, we
decided to dress up the windows
a bit. We hung a series of wreaths
from holiday ribbon. They looked
sensational. Five minutes —
done!
Do you like to keep beautiful
candlesticks on your dining-room
table or buffet year-round? Give
them a simple holiday makeover.
Just secure some greens to the
center of the candlestick using
florist wire.
I really like to decorate bookcases and hutches, turning dead
space into a fetching display. One
of my favorite things to do at the
holidays is to place faux greens
around the accents I keep on top
of the secretary in my den.

Holiday recipes with a fun twist
The invitations are arriving. Office parties, family parties, school
parties and the list goes on; it’s a
sign the holiday season is fast approaching.
To make your season a little less
stressful and a lot more delicious,
Snyder’s of Hanover has compiled
the perfect holiday dessert recipes,
all with a unique pretzel twist. So
instead of bringing the typical
cookies and cupcakes, make your
dessert stand out with a trip down
the snack aisle for pretzels.
HOLIDAY PRETZEL WREATH
1 package (about 6 ounces) of
your favorite chocolate (milk,
dark, or white)
1 bag (9 or 10 ounces) of
Snyder’s of Hanover pretzels
(mini’s, thins, or homestyle)
Red and green candies
(chocolate shell candies, jelly
beans, sugar sprinkles)
1 package of red shoestring
licorice
Wax paper
Line a cookie sheet with wax
paper. Melt chocolate in microwave or double boiler; stir.
Using tongs or a fork, dip the pretzels into the chocolate and layer in
a circle, like a wreath, onto the wax
paper.
After the wreath(s) are formed,
use the red and green candies to
sprinkle or place on top of the
wreath(s).
When you have completed the
wreath(s), cool until set. Once the
chocolate has set, use the shoestring licorice to tie into a bow, at
the top of the wreath.
PEANUT BUTTER PRETZEL
CHOCOLATE CHUNK COOKIES
Ingredients:
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 eggs
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1¾ cups crushed mini pretzels
1 (11.5 ounce) bag semi-sweet
chocolate chunk morsels or chips
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Fahrenheit.
Beat butter, peanut butter and
sugars until creamed. Add vanilla
and eggs and mix well.
Add flour, baking powder and
baking soda and mix. Finally, add
crushed pretzel pieces and chocolate chunks, mix until combined.
Using a small cookie scoop, place
cookie dough on ungreased cookie
sheets, making sure they are 2
inches apart from each other. Bake
for eight to 10 minutes. Cool on a
wire rack and store in an airtight
container.

FRUIT TART
WITH PRETZEL CRUST
Crust:
3 cups finely crushed Snyder’s
of Hanover Pretzels
2/3 cup sugar
1¼ cups cold butter or margarine
Topping:
1 (14 ounce) can of sweetened
condensed milk
¼ cup lime juice
1 tablespoon lime zest
1½ cups whipped topping
7 cups assorted fresh fruit,
sliced
In a large bowl, mix crushed
pretzels and sugar. Cut in butter
until mixture resembles coarse
crumbs.
Press into a 9-by-9 brownie pan
or small casserole dish. Bake at 375
for 10 minutes or until set. Cool at
room temperature and then refrigerate for 45 minutes. Meanwhile,
combine milk, lime juice and lime
zest. Fold in whipped topping.

now you’re prepared.

To make Bread Pudding: Combine bread cubes, mango and bananas in large bowl. Whisk together eggs, sweetened condensed
milk, mango nectar, milk, butter,
vanilla, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg in medium bowl. Pour over
bread mixture, stirring until thoroughly moistened. Let stand 30
minutes. Pour into prepared baking dish. Bake 55 to 60 minutes or
until set in center. Cool slightly in
pan on wire rack.
To make Spiced Sour Cream: Stir
sour cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and ginger until blended.
To make Coconut Caramel
Sauce: Cook butter and sugar in
small saucepan over medium-low
heat 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
Whisk in coconut milk. Bring to a
boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and
simmer 15 to 20 minutes or until
slightly thickened. Remove from
heat. Cover and keep warm.
To Toast Coconut: Spread coconut on a microwave-safe plate.
Microwave on high 2 to 4 minutes
or until lightly toasted, tossing the
coconut with a fork after each
minute. To avoid overbrowning,
remove from plate immediately.
To serve: Spoon Bread Pudding
into shallow serving bowls. Drizzle
with Coconut Caramel Sauce. Top
with a dollop of Spiced Sour
Cream. Sprinkle with coconut.
Serve immediately.
