Welcome to TREFFPUNKT!
Letter from the founders of TREFFPUNKT
Dear Language Student,
TREFFPUNKT’s commitment to excellence has made us one of Germany’s leading language schools.
Since 1995, TREFFPUNKT has been offering language students its very own system for effective
language-instruction and individual tutoring services in Bamberg ─ "far from the madding crowd". The
institute's program is appreciated by many international companies, embassies, foundations and
universities.
Language-stimulating activities and a personal, friendly atmosphere are our strengths. Our school is
designed for serious language students at all skill levels, from beginner to very advanced, who wish to
make rapid progress in German.
German is not only a language but also the basis for a culture and customs that are re-lived every day.
We at TREFFPUNKT communicate this to our language students, and we therefore also provide them
with numerous opportunities to establish the closest possible contact with Germans and German culture
outside the classroom.
The town of Bamberg is not as well known outside of Germany as it is within the country. It is, however,
one of the most popular travel destinations for Germans. The "secret treasure of Germany" is just one of
many flattering descriptions that have been offered about Bamberg. Its unique character, mediaeval
layout, baroque houses, and designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site make this pulsating
university town a marvellous place to live, study, or visit.
This manual has been written for all potential TREFFPUNKT students. Our objective is to:

Ensure that our students are fully briefed on our courses and services.

Support the course-confirmation and booking processes for both the student and the school.

Save time and reduce communication costs for both the student and the school.

Ensure accuracy in the placement of language students, and improve students' satisfaction.
We look forward to welcoming you and hope that the following information will help you to provide you
with lots of useful information.
Yours sincerely,
Mr. Joachim Graff

The Institute
Sprachinstitut TREFFPUNKT was founded in 1995 by Ms Alexandra von Rohr and Mr. Joachim Graff. It
is independently owned and managed and offers German as a Foreign Language for adults, both in class
as well as online and also offers English for Executives.
The aim of the Institute is
1. to provide adult learners with a solid understanding of German to enable them to participate
actively in a German-speaking environment: the social every day life and / or the business world.
2. to give an intimate impression of the German culture, its people, the history, customs and
present day life.
3. to help students to continue with and pursue their German studies after their course in
Bamberg by offering up-to-date programs and services – such as online learning and SprachDuo
partnership
German immersion with TREFFPUNKT means to learn German in the shortest, most effective and
motivating way.
TREFFPUNKT offers a learning experience that goes beyond the classroom. Every day students will be
offered the opportunity to practice the knowledge gained in the classroom through personal encounters
with residents of Bamberg (SprachDuo) and a variety of extracurricular activities.

Capacity
The capacity of the school as a total number of participants is 80. We provide classes in up to 8 teaching
levels (~ 60 students) and have another 30 students in the afternoon and evening who come in for one-toone training. We consciously limit the number of students in the group to ensure that the behaviour of all
students in all group activities can be guaranteed. We are convinced that the small groups (average 5)
and the personal contact in the breaks and after school at the language promoting leisure activities, is a
pre-requisite for monitoring the individual learning process, and this results in an absolute personal
learning success.
Low season: September to May – about 40 students
High season: June to August – up to 60 students

One-to-one Individuel Training
We offer three types of individual training:
1. One-to-One classes at the school: Is offered in addition to the group course or exclusively as the only
form of language session. In addition to the group (intensive plus / exam course / combined course) it will
be suitable for students who want an intensive training in particular fields but who, on the other hand, do
want to be and stay in close social contact with other students. .
If one-to-one is chosen as the exclusive form of teaching then this course offers the most intensive
method of language training. Students will learn German tailored to their needs. They decide how fast,
how intensive and how long the course will be. The course program and materials are organized
according to their wishes and prerequisites. In a personal interview before the course starts we will decide
on goals and method. They can decide how many hours per day/week the course should be. They may
also choose evenings and weekends if that is their wish.
There are no set dates for booking individual training. Enrolment can be any time, also at short notice.

Teaching, Testing and Course Levels
Placement testing
TREFFPUNKT gives the student a placement test before coming to our language institute. This is an
important tool for us to use for placement in the adequate language level. If students are beginners they
will not have to take a test but will start from scratch.
If they do not take the test beforehand they will have to take it from 9:00 to 11:00 am on the first day at the
school while the other students receive an introduction to the course and the school. To ensure that the
student will be with the group from the very beginning we strongly recommend that they take and send the
test prior to their arrival.
If they feel they have been misplaced, they should talk to their teacher(s) or the director of student affairs
and demonstrate that they are capable of doing the work in the next level or feel more convenient in a
lower level. The teacher will make recommendations at a level change meeting where final decisions are
made.
Furthermore they will have an interim test every other week to measure students progress. At the end of
the course the student will have a final test which will prove the level obtained shown on the
TREFFPUNKT certificate (see “Testing on the course”).
TestAS = Test for Academic Studies
TestAS is a central standardized aptitude test for foreign students. TestAS gives prospective students
information about their individual ranking compared to other applicants. With good results, they can
improve their chances of being admitted for studies at a German university. TestAS is conducted in
German and English. Upon registration, test takers select the language which they are most familiar with.
TestAS consists of the following components:
A Language Screening test which takes 30 minutes and consists of 6 texts.
Where we care every day about your success with German!
Page: 13 of 39
A Core Test which measures cognitive abilities required for successful studies in all academic courses. It
takes 103 minutes and consists of 4 subtests: Solving Quantitative Problems, Inferring Relations,
Completing Patterns, Continuing Numerical Series .
A subject-Specific Test Module which tests cognitive abilities required for successful studies in
selected areas of study for 4 areas of study:
 Economics Module
 Engineering Module
 Humanities, Cultural Studies and Social Sciences Module
 Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences Module
For more details please go to: https://www.testas.de/en/aufbau_en.htm The test can be taken 2 times per
year. Usually in March and October.
onDaF = online Deutsch als Fremdsprache
The test was developed by the University of Hagen which is also responsible for TestDaF and TestAS
alike. It an internet delivered gap filling test based on the C-test principle with the aim to provide a reliable,
independent and immediate feedback to learners as well as to lecturers at private and public institutions
also responsible for the eligibility for scholarships about the current command of a students studying
German. Read more on: https://www.ondaf.de/ondaf/ondaf_info/dokumente/onDaF_Abstract_english.pdf
The test consists of 8 texts with 20 gaps. The maximum time allowed per text is 5 minutes. The result is
transmitted right away online. The ondaF is administered at licensed test centers only – we are one of
them. This ensures a high level of supervision and control. It can be taken all year round at a test center
of the students choice. More details (only in German) on:
https://www.ondaf.de/ondaf/ondaf_info/qualitaet.jsp

Teaching method
http://www.learn-german.com/welcome/methode_german_class.htm
TREFFPUNKT in Bamberg combines language courses, recreational activities and seminars to create
an ideal environment for achieving learning goals as fast as possible.
The course in the morning is split into 2 parts: From 9 to 10:30, emphasis is put on grammar and
vocabulary extension. From 11:00 to 12:30 the training focuses on communicative and listening skills are
trained.
Two different teachers, usually a male and a female teacher, teach each class thus allowing different
approaches to learning German according to the teachers’ personalities. As a result they become used to
different ways of speaking and pronunciation.
Our method is not exclusively communication-based as we are convinced that good understanding of
grammar is the key to speaking well and ultimately results in breaking down communicative barriers.
Particular attention is also paid to pronunciation at any time of the course.
This is in a pictorial representation of how we teach German.
Grammar and vocabulary are the basis, i.e. students only learn a
language properly if the basis is right and solid.
On this basis the student can set up a door to enter into the spoken
language and step by step start to set up in equal parts writing,
reading and listening.
The afternoon lessons are tailored to students individual needs. In the one-to-one lessons, the teacher
prepares the lessons according to their wishes and requirements. In the super-intensive-class students
suggest and decide with the classmates what is the objective, what needs to be repeated and improved.
The balance between teachers' suggestions and student input guarantees the right mix.
Homework is an essential part of the program. About 2 hours (and more) each day should be dedicate to
be well prepared for the next day as our progression is steep and fast.
Further characteristics:
 placement: participants complete a detailed on-line placement test before the course, thus ensuring
that their training is effective right from the very first day of instruction
 a flexible course system allows participants to change their course at any time
 combination of group interaction and one-to-one instruction when choosing the intensive plus course
 effective development of verbal skills: half of all instruction time is reserved for speaking and building
up vocabulary
 written tests are given every other week to monitor participants' progress
 internationally recognized proficiency level assessment according to the Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages
 course evaluation for student feedbacks every week assessing the course, the teachers, the
organisation, the accommodation and the social activities.
Where we care every day about your success with German!
Page: 15 of 39
Testing on the course
Interim tests: There will be a written exam from 9:00 to 10:30 every other Wednesday. Students who
stay 2 or 3 weeks will take one exam. Students who stay for 4 weeks will take 2 exams.
Schedule on the exam day = Wednesday
09:00-10:30 written exam
10:30-11:00 coffee break
11:00-12:30 all courses
14:15-15:45 or 16:00-17:30 Super Intensive Course or Intensive Plus Course or Combined Course
Final test: On the last course day the student will receive a TREFFPUNKT certificate stating students
grammatical and oral competence and the number of lessons attended. The certification is based on the
criteria of the Common European Framework, details:
http://www.learn-german.com/welcome/german_level_en.htm
Course Level System
The levels correspond to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages for the study of
languages. The official system ensures that students can always verify where they are and how much
longer they will need to complete a level. Starting from the very beginning till finishing the last level and
passing one of the university entrance exams, students allow between 12 and 14 months if they attend
20 class units per week.
The different levels are:
 basic user:
level A1 and level A2, sub levels are: A1.1 + A.1.2, A2.1 + A2.2
 independent user:
level B1 and level B2, sub levels are: B1.1 + B.1.2, B2.1 + B2.2
 proficient user:
level C1 and level C2, sub levels are: C1.1 + C.1.2, C2.1 + C2.2
Each level lasts:
 Level A1, A2 and B1 require about 120 to 140 lessons each,
i.e. 6 to 7 weeks based on 20 lessons per week.
 Level B2 and C1 require about 140 to 160 lessons each,
i.e. 7 to 8 weeks based on 20 lessons per week.
 The level C2 requires 200 to 240 lessons,
i.e. 10 to 12 weeks based on 20 lessons per week
From a "zero" command of German up to a high proficiency in German, students have to study for about
12 months. After 12 months they are very likely to pass one of the higher exams = TestDaF and DSH,
after 13 months the ZOP, after 14 months the KDS and after 16 months the GDS.
Passing any of these exams will allow to study at a German university.

New exams first time in 2009: TestAs
University entrance
How to enrol at a German University
1. After having passed one of the University entrance exams (see above) the language student enrols at a
German university for those subject areas which are not restricted. The student can either start in the
winter semester (October) or summer semester (April).
It is advisable for the student to have all relevant papers translated into German by an official translator
as he/she will have to hand in the documents when applying. A prerequisite is that the student is able to
present a document that shows that he / she would be eligible to study at a university in his country with
his graduation from High School.
2. Usually applicants from countries which do not belong to the European Community are requested by
the University to take an additional assessment test called "Feststellungsprüfung" which shows whether
their higher education entrance qualification is equivalent to the German qualification. The regulations
vary from country to country and are decided individually upon once the language student has handed in
his/her papers. On http://www.daad.de/deutschland/zulassung/voraussetzungen/04646.en.html students
can check if a higher education certificate from the country from which they originate is sufficient for
direct admission to higher education institutions in Germany or if they will be required to take the
Assessment Test (Feststellungsprüfung).
This means the university does not only request the German Proficiency exam of level C1.2 but also
requires the student to have the knowledge of a German student graduating from High School.
If the latter is not the case the student has to attend the so-called "Studienkolleg" – a kind of College
where he / she will do the "German Abitur" (High School Graduation). In Bavaria the college is either in
the town of Coburg or in Munich.
Depending on what the student enrolled for at the University in Germany he/she will be assigned at the
"Studienkolleg" either to the branch of "economics", " humanities" or "engineering" and will have 4
subjects in which he will have to take the German Abitur exam.
For example: If the student wants to study law, he/she will be assigned to the branch of Humanities and
he / she will have the subjects: German, Latin (or English), history and literature.
3. It is NOT possible to apply directly to the Studienkolleg. The university will enrol the student applicant at
the "Studienkolleg". The Bavarian "Studienkolleg" is located in Munich There are 2 possibilities per year
to start at the "Studienkolleg" in the summer or the winter term. The "Studienkolleg" lasts 9 months.
It is possible to do only the "Feststellungsprüfung" (= assessment test) and not visit the "Studienkolleg"
but, from experience, it is not to be recommended as language students usually fail the
"Feststellungsprüfung" exam if they have not been properly trained at the "Studienkolleg".
Please note that the conditions can vary from one federal state in Germany to the other as education is
the responsibility of the 16 individual states in Germany. The description and demands given refer to the
federal state of Bavaria where the language institute TREFFPUNKT is located.
At the moment there is only an enrolment fee of 85 EUR, no course fees for the "Studienkolleg" are
requested. The universities in Germany have started in the winter term 2006 to charge a semester fee.
This differs from one federal state to the other. In Bavaria the fee is 500 EUR per semester.

Accommodation
Home stays
http://www.learn-german-home-tuition.com
An important aspect for the duration of the course is selecting accommodation which allows each person
to feel completely at ease. Arrival date is the Sunday before the school starts. Departure date is Saturday
after the last course day on Friday. We have visited all places personally. As we offer adult courses, we
only have single rooms on offer except for couples. One student is usually placed with a family or in a
shared flat. Only with few accommodations we can book more than one student in the same place. If
there is more than one student in one place then they will never be of the same mother tongue.

Self-contained flat shared with another German / self-catering
The landlords are students, working professionals or seniors, couples, friends or singles and their ages
range from 20– 65.
Note: Language students will have a single room. The fully equipped kitchen and bathroom are to be
shared. Language students have to bring their own towels. Sheets, blankets and beds will be provided.
Language students are reminded that they will be living in a "community", i.e. they must be willed to be
integrated and also perform simple household duties. The flat mates and the school must be informed
Where we care every day about your success with German!
Page: 24 of 39
by the language students about their arrival dates no later than 5 days beforehand. The rooms usually
do not have a TV or a telephone line, which also means often no internet access. Language students
will not be able to use the phone in the flat to make calls, although it will be possible for them to be
called. They will have to wash their laundry in a laundrette, one minutes' walk away from the school or
make a special arrangement with their landlords / flatmates. The rent does not cover the washing.

Living with a family
This accommodation is booked with breakfast or half-board.
We have families of different ages and "compositions”: Some families have small children or children
who go to school; in other families the children do not live at home anymore. Some families just
comprise a mother and the child. The food offered ranges from traditional regional fare to light
Mediterranean. There are also families who prepare vegetarian or whole grain dishes. When choosing
a family, the quality of the family involved and how students think might get along with them is our first
consideration, rather than the distance to the school. Language students might therefore not be staying
in the very centre of Bamberg and have to take a bus or ride a bicycle to the school/town centre.
However, the maximum duration of a trip either by bus or by bicycle is 15 minutes.
Note: Language students will have a single room. They must consider that they will be part of the
family during their stay not a hotel guest, and will therefore be responsible for their room and the
sanitary area. They are expected to be punctual for lunch or dinner (depending on the arrangement
made by the family) and inform their family in time, if they should be delayed or are not able to attend a
meal.
Note: If half-board is booked, breakfast will be offered every day Monday to Sunday. However, the
warm meals (either lunch or dinner) are only offered 5 days a week, usually from Monday to Friday and
not on the weekend.
The family and the school must be informed about the arrival dates no later than 5 days beforehand.
They are asked to bring their own towels. Sheets, blankets and beds will be provided. The rooms
usually do not have a TV or a telephone line, which also means no internet access. They will not be
able to use the phone in the flat to make calls, although it will be possible for them to be called. They
will have to wash their laundry in a laundrette, one minutes' walk away from the school or make a
special arrangement with their landlords. The rent does not cover the washing of laundry.
Arrival time for home stays is Sunday before the course starts and not later than 22:00. Otherwise
students must spend the first night in a hotel.
Departure is on the Saturday after the last course day, up until 15:00.
The home stay in a shared flat or in a family's house is only possible if students book a course for at least
2 weeks. Otherwise they have to stay in a hotel or a holiday apartment.
A student residence is not at option. All our language students are accommodated in private flats
(families or students or working professionals) together with another German person or in self-contained
holiday apartments or hotels and guest houses where they are also exposed to German. The reason is
that we believe that students look for a German environment not just only at the school but also at home.
With the selection of our accommodation the cultural immersion is assured round the clock as students
will see how and where Germans live.
Self-contained apartments / studios
We offer a broad selection of holiday apartments, either located in the old town or in the green
surroundings. One to two room apartments from 25 to 90 square metres, completely furnished and
equipped with kitchen, bathroom, TV, telephone line and internet access. The apartments are all very
nicely located often in historic houses and are an interesting alternative to a hotel room. Important
advantages: the rooms are bigger, the prices are more economical and language students have the
possibility to prepare their own meals. The apartments are offered mostly by private people at a daily rate.
Note: In these completely furnished apartments students will be provided with bed clothes and towels.
There will also be a weekly cleaning service. The holiday apartments typically consist of one bedroom and

Bamberg has over 1000 years of history and has been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 1993.
The town was not seriously damaged during WWII and still retains many splendid mediaeval architectural
features and over 2500 historical buildings. "Franconian Rome" - as Bamberg is sometimes affectionately
called - offers a wide variety of activities and attractions for the visitor. Its complex history and the
influence of the university make Bamberg a lively place full of diversity and an ideal location both to visit
and to live. Bamberg is also home to the world-renowned Bamberger Symphoniker orchestra.
Street festivals, bars and clubs will please people who enjoy going out at night. Those who wish to be
active and play sports will also feel at home in Bamberg: volleyball, badminton, rowing, tennis, cycling,
golf, climbing, canoeing, hiking, and roller skating by the canal to name but a few popular activities.
Another notable feature is the 10 family-run breweries in the town and 60 more in the nearby
surroundings. The most famous beer is the smoky beer 'Schlenkerla'. Note: Bamberg and its surroundings
have the highest density of breweries in the world!
Bamberg is popular with students because of...
