OSTAFIE - Mabel Julie Ostafie,
beloved wife of the late Alexander
Ostafie of Yorkton, passed away
peacefully on September 29, 2014
at the age of 91 years. Mabel was
born April 7, 1923 on the family
farm in the Verigin district of
Saskatchewan, the daughter of
Onufrey and Eudokia (nee Shordee)
Glute, Mabel received her education
first at Rona school then later
at Sacred Heart Academy. After
completing her education, Mabel
moved to Winnipeg for a few years
where she was employed by Eaton’s
as a clerk. Mabel returned to
Saskatchewan where she married
Alexander Ostafie on May 21,
1950 at St Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic
Church in Yorkton. After selling
their home in Yorkton, they moved
to Sudbury, ON in 1952 where
Alex was employed with the International
Nickel
Company
Incorporated.
Mabel worked at Eaton’s as
a clerk then later decided to
become a Health Care Worker, first
at the nursing home then at the
General Hospital in Sudbury. Mabel enjoyed her work, she loved the
patients and the staff that she worked with. She loved Ontario. After 25
years, in 1977, Alex took the early retirement that INCO offered him. They
decided to move back to Saskatchewan and make their home in Yorkton.
Mabel was glad to be back to give moral support to her brothers and
sisters in their time of need. Mabel was warm hearted and generous to
charities. She also provided educational support to seminaries. Mabel
loved sports, bowling was her favourite game and she brought home
many trophies. Fishing, gardening, crocheting, embroidering and doing
Sudoku puzzles were her hobbies. She enjoyed reading books on religion,
politics and health. In 1980’s illness slowed her down and forced her
into semi retirement. With tremendous courage and strong faith, a fight for
survival kept her going for many years. Mabel loved her rosary, she
gained strength and guidance through it’s prayer. Her faith in God’s love
and mercy remained and was the greatest asset throughout life. Mabel
felt spiritually rich and never alone. Mabel departed this life as bravely
and quietly as she had lived it. May God Rest her Soul. Mabel was
predeceased by her loving husband, Alexander Ostafie; parents, Onufrey and
Eudokia Glute; Sisters, Ann, Lena, Sister Kris, Sister Martin: brothers,
Harry, Metro, Mike and Father Basil. Mabel leaves to mourn her passing
her extended family including brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law as well as
many wonderful nieces, nephews, their families and all those that were
touched by her gracious life. The Prayer Service was held on Friday,
October 3, 2014 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home with Father
Raymond Lukie, C.Ss.R. officiating. The Requiem Divine Liturgy was
sung on Saturday, October 4, 2014 from St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic
Church with Father Raymond Lukie, C.Ss.R. as the celebrant. The Cross
Bearer was Bill Glute, Sr. The responses were led by Mr. Ed Pindus and
members of the Yorkton Ukrainian Catholic Choir. The Interment Service
followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Jason Mosiondz, June
Mosiondz, Justin Mosiondz, Bill Glute, Jr., Jennifer Richards and Korry
Wosminity serving as the casket bearers. Friends so wishing may forward
their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home &
Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
THOMPSON - Norma Joyce
Thompson (Hilton) was born on
October 13, 1939 to George and
Johanna (Gibson) Hilton. This day
was significant because she
shared the same birthday with her
Dad. She was born on the family
farm and was the second oldest of
the four “Hilton sisters.” Her early
school years were spent at Glyndwr
where the four sisters would arrive
by horse and buggy or sleigh.
High school years were spent at
Saltcoats and Bredenbury. She
was from a farming family with all
girls so there was no gender
discrimination for the many tasks
required. The girls collected eggs
from chickens, rode the horses
bare back to get the cattle from the
pasture, milked cows, drove the
tractor, hauled hay and made
haystacks. In the winter they enjoyed
skating on the sloughs. After
graduation she spent time working
for local families as a hired girl and
mother’s helper before moving to
Regina to work with SaskTel as a
Telephone operator. On June 10, 1960 she was married to Don Thompson
in Regina, SK. As they began their life together, winters were spent in
Calgary or Edmonton and back to the farm in the summer. They began to
build their permanent family home in 1964 where she continued to live
throughout her life. She became a very busy homemaker with five
children, a large garden and many hired hands to feed on the farm. She
maintained a busy lifestyle with her commitment to family pursuing their
activities. Family was always her priority and guests were always welcome
to her home with generous hospitality. She enjoyed baking, cooking,
gardening, sewing and music. She had an exceptional talent for piano
and was a gifted player who could play by note or by ear. She was a
natural teacher who encouraged others to learn with her easy patience.
After the loss of her husband, she quickly had to take on the full
responsibility of the family farm and found the other side of farming to be
extremely enjoyable and rewarding. She was proud to have earned the
Thompson Century Family Farm award in 2006 and to be a part of the
history in the community. As grandchildren arrived they became her pride
and joy. She was a proud supporter of their many sporting and schooling
events. Crokinole tournaments were often won by “Grammie” and you
were lucky if she was your partner for her accuracy in the game. Fun
teasing and banter would be heard during a round and everyone had a
laugh regardless of the winner. The cookie jar was always full and she
playfully shared her wisdom with the next generation. Norma was a natural
beauty, a loyal friend with a generous heart and playful spirit. She had
an appreciation for nature and enjoyed the beauty and traditions of the
change of seasons. She especially enjoyed lady slipper and crocus hunts
and watching the various wildlife in her yard. She enjoyed traveling with
family and was especially fond of family trips across Canada. Hawaii
became her favorite vacation spot and she had the opportunity to visit a few
times in recent years. True to her nature, she was always the gracious
host even while on vacation. Norma’s passion was her family and she will
be sadly missed by all who knew her. She was predeceased by her
husband Don and her parents George and Johanna Hilton. She is survived
by her children; Tracy Oliver (Gordon), Robin MacDonald (John), Bradley
Thompson (Corinna), Corinne Mark (Edwin) and Twila Kardynal (Greg);
11 grandchildren; Reid and Ainsley Oliver, Shelby, Cassidy and Gillian
MacDonald, Lindsay, Brayden, Tayler and Sean Thompson and Tyson
and Teagan Simon; sisters; Thelma Hilton-Wenc, Dorothy Hilton and
Florence Hutchings; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services
were held on Sunday, October 5, 2014 from the Saltcoats Town Hall with
Reverend Walter Farquharson officiating. The Processional Music was a
taped medley of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful
World” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. The organist, Ruth Datema and members
of the Saltcoats United Church Choir (and friends) led the congregation in
the singing of the hymns, “All Things Bright and Beautiful”, “For the
Fruit of All Creation” and “In The Bulb There is a Flower”. Family members
shared words of tribute and eulogy in honour of Norma’s life. Linda
Datema and Connie Taylor sang “Hallelujah” accompanied on guitar by
Carla Laycock and Theresa Laycock. The Recessional Music was a
taped music selection of Vera Lynn singing “We’ll Meet Again” and the
congregation was invited to sing along. This was followed by another of
Norma’s favorite songs, “My Favorite Things” by Julie Andrews. Prior to
both the Funeral Service and the reception, a photo tribute chronicling
Norma’s life was shared with the congregation. A private family interment
service took place in the Saltcoats Town Cemetery with Tyson Simon,
Lindsay Thompson, Brayden Thompson, Tayler Thompson, Reid Oliver,
Shelby MacDonald and Cassidy MacDonald serving as the casket
bearers. Donations in Norma’s name may be made to Ovarian Cancer
Canada (www.ovariancanada.org) as tokens of remembrance. Friends so
wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting
www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to
Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

PELLETIER - It is with heavy
hearts and great sadness that we
announce the passing of Clinton
Dwayne Pelletier, age 27 on
Sunday, September 28, 2014 at the
Yorkton Regional Health Center.
Clinton was born In Yorkton, SK
on October 3, 1986. At a young
age Clinton’s family moved to
Valley River First Nation where
he attended elementary school in
Grandview and Valley River,
eventually they moved back to Yorkton
where he attended high school at
Yorkton Regional. As a child,
Clinton played hockey as a Grand
Plains Hawk and Yorkton Lions
Terrier. He also played baseball as
a Yorkton Cardinal. Clinton and his
dad travelled a lot from Saskatchewan
to
BC.
Those
memories
Dwayne SR holds close to his
heart. Clinton worked as a drywaller
with his dad and his big brothers.
They worked in Yorkton, Calgary
and Saskatoon. Clint loved all
his brothers very much and spent
time with them as much as
possible. He was an avid sports enthusiast. He was a huge Saskatchewan
Roughrider Fan and a Montreal Canadiens Fan. He loved to rent UFC
fights and watch them with his brothers and friends. Clint took up the
game of golf these past few years, he would go play with his dad, brothers
& friends. For years the family would get together for Texas Hold’em
games in the basement of Ashwood Place. In the last few months at
home, Clinton learned how to play waahoo, he enjoyed playing the game
with his parents and family members. On December 9, 2011, Clinton’s life
changed forever, he became a father. He lovingly welcomed his daughter,
Anna Rain Lee McKay-Pelletier into this world. Anna was Daddy’s #1
Baby girl. No matter how sick he was he took care of Anna, she was his
world. Clint was always optimistic about beating his cancer. In the last
weeks of Clint’s life, he was more determined than ever, knowing that his
daughter was coming home to live with him in January. After a 3 year
courageous battle with cancer, Clint decided not to continue with the
western tradition medicine and decided to go back to his grassroots and
seek the help of a Medicine Man. Through all the treatments and hospital
visits, Clint’s spirits remained vibrant. He always had a smile on his face
and loved to joke around. Clint was always a respectable man, as sick as
he was, he thought about others before himself, he would pray for family
and friends. Clint accepted the Lord into his heart and life. Family and
friends would come visit the family and read the good book to him and
pray with him. Clint is survived and will be missed dearly by his parents
Dwayne & Valerie Pelletier, his siblings Ashley Whitehawk (Robin) from
Regina, Dwayne Jr Whitehawk (Jackie), Darwin Whitehawk, Dustin Shin
goose (Robyn), Gregory Shingoose (Rochelle), Timothy Pelletier all from
Yorkton, SK. His baby girl Anna Rain Lee McKay-Pelletier. He will also
be missed by his aunties & uncles Rita, Myles, Lyle, Brenda, Karen,
Barry, Desi, Laura, Stanley, Sylvia, Jeffery, Sarena and Billy as well
as numerous cousins, nieces & nephews. Clinton was predeceased by his
grandparents Marceline Shingoose, William Shingoose, Elizabeth
Pelletier, Frank Pelletier, his sister Crystal Desjarlais. His Aunties & Uncles
Caroline Shingoose, Alfred Shingoose, Lillian Strongquill, Roberta
Shingoose, Alvina Shingoose, Anthony Pelletier, Marilyn Chartrand & twin

RUF - Leonard Irwin Ruf was born
in Yorkton, SK on December 8,
1930, to Henry and Leah Ruf (nee
Engel) and he was baptized and
confirmed as a member of the
Trinity Lutheran Church in Stornoway.
He married Beatrice Becker
on April 13, 1950 and they were
blessed with 6 loving children.
They
remained
members
of
Stornoway Lutheran Church and after
it closed they became members of
Zion Lutheran Church in Yorkton
where Leonard continued to sing
in the choir. He grew up on the
family farm near Stornoway,
attended Clyde school and worked
with his dad on the farm until
Leonard and Beatty started their own
farming operation in 1950. He
went to Edmonton for a mechanics
course, which served him well
during his many years of farming. In
1960, he and his brother Verner
started farming together which
continued for 30 years. In 1974,
Leonard’s son, Garry joined the
farming operation. He was a
member of the Rhein Lions Club and the Rhein Golden Agers. He enjoyed
curling, playing cards and socializing with many family and friends. He
especially enjoyed fishing and over the years lost count on just how many
boats were bought and sold. His latest purchase was a pontoon boat with
many happy memories cruising looking for elusive fish! Leonard was
predeceased by his parents Henry and Leah Ruf, his granddaughter Kristina
Rae Ruf, his step-grandson Alex Robichaud and his nephew Kirk
Niebrandt. He leaves to cherish his memories and celebrate his life, his wife
of 64 years Beatrice, his son Garry (Linda) of Rhein, their children Bradley
(Jodi) their son Reeve, Blair (Marissa) their children Gaby and Aiden,
Brett (Robin) their son Paxton; daughter Valerie (Dan) Robichaud of Yorkton,
her step-children Jessica (Jeff) Ronn and their children Matthew and
Danielle, Michael (Megan) Robichaud and Eliza Robichaud; son Earl
(Trena) Ruf of Melville, SK, their children, a daughter Megan (Devin) Shuba
and their daughters Brooklyn and Macy and son Michael (Kelsey) Ruf;
son Sheldon (Laurie) of Stockholm and their daughters Leah, her daughter
Braelyn (Derek, his children Liam, Makenzy), Jessalyn (Tyler), Kyla
(Kyle); daughter Lorna of Saskatoon; and son Jamie of Kamsack, and
daughters Teagan and Taylin; a brother Verner (Elaine) of Yorkton; a sister
Eleanor (Walt) Dickie of Coldwater, ON, plus many special nieces and
nephews. Mom and Dad worked hand in hand on their farm for over 50
years until their retirement. Farming was not always easy, but having 6
amazing children made it all worthwhile. There were many occasions with
the “happy gang” (you know who you are), “old lizzy” and many many
weekends spent with family and friends. Dad also had a tremendous
fascination for cars and the faster they went the happier he was! He has
happily passed this trait onto his sons! Dad dabbled in music his whole
life. We just read in his memoirs “another highlight in my life that I remember
was when my Dad brought home a Steward Warner Radio about
1934 or 35 and heard my first country song and have been hooked ever
since”. He lovingly tortured us many times by having us listen to his playing
on the accordion, harmonica, guitar, plus hundreds of LP’s, tapes and
CD’s of his favourite music. Lorna recalls being treated to polka music on
her visits home. On Friday, September 26, Mom wanted to take Dad into
the hospital, as he had not been feeling well, but being a true Rider fan
wanted to watch the game on TV that night against Edmonton and
because of the outcome regretted watching that game! We all know that a
cat has 9 lives and we are quite sure that Dad was on about his 11th
having had many accidents and illnesses throughout his life. But even the
energizer bunny eventually runs out of energy. Dad left us on the morning
of Sunday, September 28, 2014, to be with his Lord and Saviour Jesus
Christ, with family by his side. He was 83 years of age and he is and
always will be sorely missed. Love you Dad! A Prayer Service was held on
Wednesday, October 1, 2014 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home
in Yorkton, SK with Pastor Daniel Moeller officiating. The Funeral Service
was held on Thursday, October 2, 2014 from Zion Lutheran Church with
Pastor Daniel Moeller officiating. The organist, Verna Liebrecht led the
congregation in the singing of the hymns, “I Know That My Redeemer
Lives”, “Rock of Ages” and “When Peace Like a River”. The Choir Selection
was “Lift High the Cross”. Special music was provided by soloist, Jessalyn
Ruf who sang “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” and Lawrence Kitz who
sang, “Look for Me at Jesus’ Feet”. Following a reception in the Zion
Lutheran Church Hall, the Interment Service took place in the Stornoway
Cemetery with Garry Ruf, Val Robichaud, Dan Robichaud, Earl Ruf, Sheldon
Ruf, Lorna Ruf and James Ruf serving as the casket bearers. Friends
so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting
www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to
Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

Seven sad and lonely years have
passed
Since our great sorrow fell…
The shock that we received that
night
No one can ever tell.
God gave us strength to meet it
And courage to bear the blow
But what it meant to lose you dad
No one will ever know.
It’s lonely here without you
We miss you more each day
For life is not the same to us
Since you were called away.
You bode no one a last farewell
Nor even said goodbye
You were gone before we knew it
And only God knows why.
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you
The night God called you home.

My 50’s are wonderful.
I travel & no more
mortgage payments. The
kids are grown & I am
in excellent health. Just
this summer I went on a
Caribbean cruise & loved
it. I have a trip planned
for Yellowknife for me
& my sister who lives
in Florida, celebrating
her 40th wedding
anniversary in March. I
am a social person, &
being a professional in
my field, I am invited to
many functions & events.
It would be wonderful to
have a man who enjoys
that kind of thing, but I
do like to stay at home
too. I have always had
a thing for a man with a
motorbike. There are many
places in Canada I would
love see on a road trip.
So, life has changed for
me since my husband
passed away. At 49 I
would like to meet a nice
person. I come from a
large farming family with
many, many aunts &
uncles, cousins, sisters
& a brother. I am an
executive, so my work is
great. I am very lucky to
have such a wonderful
career and will retire early
thanks to some good
financial decisions that I
made.

PLAN NUMBER 3-3360
PLENTY OF SPACE
FOR EXPANSION
This attractive threebedroom,
split-level
home features plenty of
space for expansion in
an unfinished portion
of the ground floor, with
most of the living space
on the second floor to
take advantage of a view.
Several steps lead up
to a covered entry and
into a high-ceilinged
foyer with a coat closet
to the right. Directly
ahead is a double stairway, one leading to the
ground floor’s third bedroom and adjoining bath,
and the other leading up
to the great room on the
main (or second) floor.
The open-plan great
room and dining room
look out to the front garden. Natural light will
flood into both rooms,
thanks to large windows, and the dining
area enjoys access to an
L-shaped deck with a
covered portion that will
make year-round grilling a pleasure. The great
room includes an extrawide window sill and gas
fireplace.
The kitchen, separat-
ed from the dining area
by a prep island, features
plenty of counter space
in a U-shaped configuration, as well as a double
sink set at an angle with
windows on both sides. A
spacious pantry is located near the prep island.
The kitchen also enjoys
access to a covered patio
with steps down to the
back garden.
The master suite overlooks the back garden for
privacy, and includes a
generous walk-in closet.
The en-suite features
double sinks and a
shower stall, as well as
a soaker tub with a tiled
surround and its own
window.
The nearby linen
closet will serve both the
master bedroom and second bedroom, which has
its own three-piece bathroom. Across the corridor is the laundry room.
The tandem garage is
roomy enough for three
vehicles, or two plus a
workshop.
This home’s exterior
finishes include wooden
shingles and brick on the
upper and lower façade,
as well as painted trim
and decorative woodwork, for a charming
arts-and-crafts look.
The home measures
44 feet wide and 47 feet
deep, for a total of 1,973
square feet.
Plans for design 3-3360 are available for $695
(set of 5), $790(set of 8)
and $866 for a super set
of 10. Also add $30.00 for
Priority charges within
B.C. or $55.00 outside of
B.C.
Please add 12%
H.S.T., 13% H.S.T. Or 5%
G.S.T (where applicable)
to both the plan price
and Priority charges.

Be safe on
long weekend
The Thanksgiving long
weekend is fast approaching. CAA Saskatchewan
reminds all motorists to
plan ahead for their long

added, “That’s why it’s
important to plan ahead
and ensure your vehicle
is roadworthy. We know
that in Saskatchewan
the weather can change
quickly which can impact
driving conditions. Be
prepared: adjust your
driving behaviour to the
changing environments.”
