IMPORTANT NOTICE
All competitors under the age of 18 years, and vulnerable adults of any age, must be
supervised by a parent, guardian or carer. Where a parent, guardian or carer is not personally
attending with their child/vulnerable adult, the parent, guardian or carer must be satisfied that
the child/vulnerable adult will either be accompanied to the Festival and adequately
supervised by an adult acting on their behalf, or be satisfied that the child/vulnerable adult
may attend the Festival independently.
With reference to the preliminary statement, we advise that the Festival Committee and
Festival Helpers cannot take responsibility for those children/vulnerable adults who attend
unsupervised.

ADJUDICATOR – Joan Foster
The Committee of the Grantham Music Festival is delighted this year to welcome Joan Foster
to Grantham.
For 13 years, Joan was cello teacher and lecturer in String Teaching at Birmingham
Conservatoire.
She has been a seminar/workshop leader for several Local Education Authorities and for the
European String Teachers’ Association in UK and Denmark.
Joan is a former Director of the St Cecilia Chamber Music Trust and was the cellist in the
Lydian Trio.
She currently teaches strings and piano and is Director of the Alverton Singers. She is a
grade/diploma examiner and trainer for ABRSM, nationally and internationally.
ADJUDICATION OF PERFORMANCES
Marks will be awarded as follows:

for an exceptional performance, both technically and artistically
for an excellent performance technically and artistically

Certificates and Trophies will be awarded as follows:

Each entrant will receive a detailed written adjudication
Entrants placed 1st and 2nd in each class will receive a certificate
Merit certificates will also be awarded at the Adjudicator’s discretion
Trophies will be awarded as indicated
The Committee will award a small prize to winners in the beginner classes to encourage and support
promising young performers in their musical journey.

No professional performer (i.e. anyone who derives the main part of their income from that
branch of the art in which they intend to enter the Festival) may compete
Age limits apply to 31 August of the year of the Festival
The Committee reserves the right to accept or refuse any entry and its decision on any point
is final
The Committee reserves the right to change the adjudicator or appoint extra adjudicators as
it deems appropriate
Any comments regarding the running of the Festival should be made in writing and sent to
the General Secretary

Completed entry forms and declarations along with full payment (together with a large SAE)
must be received by the closing date
Late or incomplete entries will NOT be accepted due to the time constraints on the compiling
and printing of the Festival Programme
No soloist or group may enter the same piece for more than ONE class
No solo competitor may enter more than ONE instrumental or vocal grade class on the same
instrument
Accurate timing of performances must be specified on the form at the time of entry
Competitors requiring an Official Accompanist must state this on their entry form, enclose a
copy of the music for the accompanist and pay the relevant fees at the time of entry
Choice of piece(s) must meet the requirements for duration, genre and style specified in class
description
Any substitution made after the closing date may render the performance non-competitive

Copies of pieces must be brought to the Festival for the use of the Adjudicator and must be
handed in before the start of the session in which the class takes place. Failure to do so may, at
the discretion of the Adjudicator, render the performance non-competitive
Copies of pieces must be clearly marked with the competitor's name, class number and
competitor number
Unauthorised photocopying is illegal. To comply with the Code of Fair Practice, any
photocopies for the Adjudicator will be retained by the Committee and destroyed
Competitors in piano classes may ask to play a scale or arpeggio before the start of their class;
this is, however, at the Adjudicator’s discretion and if time permits
Performers running over their allotted time must be prepared to stop at the request of the
Adjudicator
Equipment to play CD backing tracks (as stated in the Syllabus under individual classes) will be
provided
The Adjudicator will only award 1st and 2nd place, certificates of merit and trophies where
sufficient merit is shown
Photographing and recording of Festival sessions is strictly forbidden
The Committee accepts no responsibility for damage to, or loss of instruments, music copies or
personal property of any kind during the Festival

Trophy Winners are required to receive their trophy at the Presentation of Trophies and should
be prepared to perform at the Trophy W inners Concert
Due to time constraints we regret that only a selection of trophy winners would be invited to
perform at the Trophy Winners Concert, but details of all trophy winners will be recorded in the
Grantham Music Festival Book of Honour

The following events or sessions will take place during the Festival:

Primary School Music Making – an opportunity for primary schools to present two or more
pieces of their choice in a non-competitive, fun context, and to meet with other schools in the area
Festival Service – A special service with readings and music from Festival performers, this takes
place in the afternoon of Sunday 8th March in Christchurch, Finkin Street
Presentation of Trophies and Trophy Winners Concert – All the Trophy W inners are invited to
receive their trophies at a special presentation on the evening of Saturday 14th March at 7.00.
The Committee will decide the final schedule of the classes once all the entries have been
received.

takes place as soon as the programme has been finalised.

All performances using music from shows in current production are subject to copyright law.
Songs from shows in current production may be sung as a concert item, i.e. with no costume or
movement without need for copyright permission.
Where movement and/or costume are included in a performance copyright permission is required
and the Festival Committee accepts these entries on the basis that the appropriate copyright
permission has been sought.

PRELIMINARY STATEMENT: The safety of children and members of other vulnerable groups is
paramount and all, without exception, have the right to protection from abuse. All suspicions and
allegations of abuse will be taken seriously and responded to swiftly and appropriately and all the
Festival’s trustees, organisers, staff and volunteers have a responsibility to report concerns.
1.
PURPOSE AND FUNCTION OF ORGANISATION:
The object of the Festival is to advance the education of the public in the Arts. It provides a platform for
amateur performance combined with an educational element from professional musicians.
2.
THE FESTIVAL ENVIRONMENT:
The Festival is a charity run entirely by dedicated volunteers who aim to provide, as far as is reasonably
practicable, a safe environment at each of the Festival venues, namely the church building of
Christchurch, Finkin Street, and for one evening session the school hall at The Priory Ruskin Academy,
Rushcliffe Road.
It is the policy of our Festival to inform and involve parents/guardians/carers and teachers in
partnership with you in order to ensure, as far as it is reasonably practicable, a safe environment at our
Festival. We do this by ensuring that you receive a copy of this policy at the time you are making
arrangements to attend our Festival.
3.
TO WHOM DOES THIS POLICY APPLY?
This policy relates to children under the age of 18 years and members of vulnerable groups of any age
whose needs are identified to the Festival organisers by parents/guardians/carers and/or teachers prior
to their arrival at the Festival. This should be done by contacting the address or telephone number at
the head of this document. Our Festival actively seeks, wherever possible, to meet these needs, but
must know beforehand in order to prepare support - or to let you know we are unable to help.
4.
FESTIVAL PERSONNEL:
All Festival helpers are volunteers and are recruited by personal recommendation, or are teachers in the
area. Festival roles are considered during recruitment. The Festival secretary holds contact details for all
personnel, and where they are working in contact with children and vulnerable adults, holds references
and declarations. Furthermore, all Festival helpers are aware of and support the Child Protection Policy.

All Festival personnel are informed how to direct children and vulnerable adults with a problem to the
designated person. Every concern raised will be taken seriously, documented and dated. Festival
personnel are easily identified by their official Festival badge.
5.
PREPARATION FOR ATTENDANCE AT THE FESTIVAL:
All competitors under the age of 18 years, and vulnerable adults of any age, must be supervised by a
parent, guardian or carer. Where a parent, guardian or carer is not personally attending with their
child/vulnerable adult, this Policy requires them to be satisfied that the child/vulnerable adult will be
accompanied to the Festival and adequately supervised by a responsible adult acting on their behalf.
Teachers of larger group entries or with multiple entries will be expected to distribute the information
to parents/carers of participating children/vulnerable adults and return a signed letter stating the
information has been passed on.
Where parents/guardians/carers are not personally attending with their children, this Policy requires
them to be satisfied that their children will be accompanied to the Festival and adequately supervised
by responsible adults acting on their behalf.
6.
PERFORMANCE AREAS AND CHANGING AREAS:
The Festival does not offer supervised changing facilities. The toilet facility is a public area and is not
supervised.
7.
PHOTOGRAPHS, VIDEOTAPES AND PRESS PHOTOGRAPHY:
Video recording and the taking of photographs by any means is prohibited at all times. The Grantham
Journal photographer is invited to attend the Festival during certain classes. Parents/guardians/carers,
who do not wish their child/vulnerable adult to be photographed, are invited to make their concerns
known, at the time, to any Festival helper. Festival personnel are easily identified by their official
Festival badge.
8.
THE LEGISLATION AND GUIDANCE THAT SUPPORTS THIS POLICY:
The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974; The Children Act 1989; The Police Act 1997;
The Data Protection Act 1998; The Human Rights Act 1998; The Protection of Children Act 1999;
The Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000; The Children Act 2004;
The Protection of Vulnerable Groups Act 2006.
9.
POLICY REVIEW:
The organisers will constantly review their policy, improving and enhancing it as necessary. In doing this
they will look to The British & International Federation of Festivals for support and that body, in turn,
will look to other agencies for good practice, most notably the NSPCC and Arts Council of policy
guidelines.
