We invite applications for the position of Employee Relations Manager in the Human Resource Department, for
appointment as soon as possible.
The main purpose of this position is to manage the employee relations climate within a complex environment through the
provision of a proactive, professional and integrated employee relations service. The incumbent of this position will be
responsible for leading a team of employee relations specialists in delivering this service. We seek to appoint an
individual with legal expertise, who thrives on complexity and challenge, is proactive and able to deliver successfully
under pressure. This person must have demonstrated competence in employee relations, relationship management &
people management.
Requirements

Bachelor’s Law Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree/B Tech degree and a Postgraduate Qualification in Employee Relations
or Labour Law

7 years’ complex employee relations experience, preferably in a multi-union environment, active participation in
collective bargaining and staff management, with at least three years management experience

Excellent pro-active client service and people orientation

Excellent process and data orientation;

Case/Project management experience and familiarity with case/project management approaches and tools.

Good working and theoretical knowledge of current legislation governing HR practice and its implementation through
policies

Excellent communication skills (oral and written)

Experience in the drafting of legal documentation

Coaching, advisory and mentoring experience

Proven experience in stakeholder engagement
Advantageous

Being an Admitted Attorney would be advantageous.
Responsibilities

Provide oversight and manage the employee relations service delivery to the client base in relation to all HR policies
and procedures in accordance with best practice, current and proposed legislation.

Manage and lead the employee relations team through professional knowledge and commitment to service excellence

Training, coaching and mentoring ER specialists and HR practitioners

Case management which includes representing the university on disputes internally or externally (e.g. CCMA) and
ensuring that Line managers and HR practitioners are well prepared for cases

Manage the relationship and the service level agreement with university appointed attorneys

Drafting of all legal documentation

Manage the relationships with all staffing bodies (e.g. trade unions)

Develop and build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders to encourage integration of HR best
practice into client planning and operation

Involvement with policy formulation and review

Provision of ER related management information

Participate in, service and advise on collective bargaining processes
The annual cost of employment for 2014, including benefits, is between R 578 934 and R 681 115.
