M USIC N OTES
Today during communion, men from the choir will sing the motet “ Ave verum
corpus” by Lodovico Grossi da Viadana (c.1560 - 1627). Viadana was a leading
composer of his day. He was one of the firs t composers to make extensive us e of
figured bass, a musical sy stem in which the harmonies of a piece ar e derived from
the bass line. This system signified the end of the R enaissance period and would
dominate the Baroque period (lasting from roughly 1600 to 1750).
The choir will also sing the Kyrie and Agnus Dei “Pat er cuncta” from the
Graduale Romanum. T he Graduale Romanum is a volume containing music for the
Roman liturgy, a result of the renewed interest in chant during the late 19 t h
centur y. It was compiled by the monks of Solesmes Abbey in France.

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

And also with you.
Celebrant Let us pray.
Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, that we may
continually be given to good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
First Reading—Isaiah 25: 1-9
O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you, I will praise your name; for you have
done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure. For you have made
the city a heap, the fortified city a ruin; the palace of aliens is a city no more, it
will never be rebuilt. Therefore strong peoples will glorify you; cities of ruthless
nations will fear you. For you have been a refuge to the poor, a refuge to the
needy in their distress, a shelter from the rainstorm and a shade from the heat.
When the blast of the ruthless was like a winter rainstorm, the noise of aliens like
heat in a dry place, you subdued the heat with the shade of clouds; the song of
the ruthless was stilled. On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all
peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with
marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain
the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations;
he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears
from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth,
for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we
have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is th e LORD for whom we
have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

The Lord is my shep- herd;
I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me beside still waters. He
revives my soul and guides me along right pathways for his Name’s sake.
All repeat the refrain
Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; for
you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
All repeat the refrain
You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; y ou have
anointed my head with oil, and my cup is running over.
All repeat the refrain
Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will
dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
All repeat the refrain
Second Reading—Philippians 4: 4-13
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be
known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in
everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made
known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will
guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is
true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is
pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is
anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things
that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of
peace will be with you. I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at last you have
revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned for me, but had no
opportunity to show it. Not that I am referring to being in need; for I have
learned to be content with whatever I have. I know what it is to have litt le, and I
know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the
secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in
need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Once more Jesus spoke to the people in parables, saying: “The kingdom of
heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. He
sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but
they would not come. Again he sent other slaves, saying, 'Tell those who have
been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have
been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.' But
they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business,
while the rest seized his slaves, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was
enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
Then he said to his slaves, 'The wedding is ready, but those invited were not
worthy. Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the
wedding banquet.' Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom
they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was fille d with guests. But
when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not
wearing a wedding robe, and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here
without a wedding robe?' And he was speechless. Then the king said to the
attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness,
where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' For many are called, but few
are chosen.”

Prayers of the People—Form IV
Let us pray for the Church and for the world.
Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your
truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world.
Here and after each petition is sung
Vzz yvrvyvtzvRv/vvrvztvzz Yvzz /
 Lord, in your mer-cy,
 Hear our prayer.
Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and
peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good.
Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its
resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory.
Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve
Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us.
Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courag e
and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation.
We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be
fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal
kingdom.
The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect.
Confession of Sin
Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word,
and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not
loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in
your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Celebrant says
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord
Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit
keep you in eternal life. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
At the end of the Eucharistic prayer all people are welcome to the High Altar. If for any reason
one does not wish to receive Communion or is not baptized, he or she is most welcome to receive a
blessing (indicated by crossing both arms over one’s chest). The ministers will bring the Sacrament
to those who tell an usher that they cannot easily climb the steps.

It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God,
living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever.
Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with
your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance.
Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day, and
beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasin g praise. Joining with

The people remain standing. The Celebrant continues
We acclaim you holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your
wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into
our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your
creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to
the power of death. In your mercy you came to your help, so that in seeking you we
might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through
the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation.
Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your
only son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he
lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of
salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he
gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the
whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him
who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who
believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the
sanctification of all.
When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father,
having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper
10
with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and
gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and
when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This
is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the
forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death
and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to you
right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you
have give us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you.

We praise you,
we bless you,
we give thanks to you,
and we pray to you, Lord our God.
Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend
upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts
for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood
of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become
one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name.
Remember, Lord, your one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, redeemed by the
blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace.
Remember all who minister in your Church. Remember all your people, and those
who seek your truth. Remember all who have died in the peace of Christ, and those
whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light.
And grant that we may find our inheritance with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with
patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and all the saints who have found favor
with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through
your Son Jesus Christ Our Lord.
Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours,
Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever.
AMEN.
